“One of the toughest enemies I’ve faced so far.” Oh you sweet summer child. Soul Warrior may be tough now, but soon you’ll be wishing all fights are like his.
Try to heal when the boss is staggared (the moments where they just stand still and dont do anything) since you dont deal any extra dmg to them in that period
Some tips: 1 go where was gruz mother and move past her, theres going to be a wall with a hut, go there and buy Shaman stone and equip it, if making your vengful spirit (the big ball of white stuff (no I dont regret saying that)) a lot stronger (it already deals THRICE the damage your nail dealt at the start of the game and pretty sure currently is ~33% stronger without the shaman, I dont think you need an explanation as to why you would want to use it) 2 explore where you got the mantis claw for a very fun bossfight and explore after the bossfight the area for a decent charm for your nail (dont go further after the bossfight unless you're a masochist who loves walking through dark tight spaces full of "theres 1 that means theres 100" kind of enemies) 3 explore the areas you were in further, there are many goodies you've missed 4 you can hit spikes with your nail to do parkour in some areas, one even leads to a moderate difficulty bossfight 5 the ability you got from soul master gives you quite big invincibility window and also is boosted by the shaman stone
ancient basin ... there's a couple things that can be done there, but most of them require gear you don't have (or bizarre shade skips, unfortunately including the stag station, which is also the only one behind a breakable wall due to being introduced in a dlc update - i mention this because it's more of a convenience instead of a spoiler and it got explicitly mentioned in the update trailer for it iirc). i'd probably take a look around, and file things in memory to come back later. then again that's something to do for most of the game, so... shade skip: intentionally dying to then use the shade as something to pogo/down strike off of to reach heights you aren't meant to. in this case they're particularly bizarre due to the locations the shade will spawn at - one requires getting the shade's attention with vengeful spirit (shade hp must be over 15 in order for it to survive), and the other one requires baiting the shade to use its own fireball spell and then you pogo off of that. shade mechanics breakdown for shade skips: - it's attention can be triggered by proximity or damaging it - can only go a limited distance from its spawn point before returning back and losing attention in you - leaving the room and returning will reset everything about it, notably hp and spell casts in case you failed a shade skip but left the shade alive - HP: NailDMG * floor(HP/2) // Nail Damage is 5+4n where n is upgrade count - Spell Casts: n-2 where n is the spell count you can cast from full soul, ignoring charms. - The spells it has will mimic your own. seems to somewhat trigger based on your relative position when it decides to start going for a spell
shade skips are mainly speedrun/challenge run tech, though i thought they were a fun trivia nugget. more useful would be noting that they specifically placed non-shade things (like spikes, background objects, or enemies) to allow for the ability to pogo for a sequence break if you wanted to. also, most shade skips aren't that bizarre either, like the shade skip to a charm vendor without dash by just pogoing a shade with no other complexities, which is most commonly used to get shaman stone early (top tier charm for spell builds, boosts damage of all spells by ~33-50% (depends on the spell) as well as the boosting fireball spells' size -> double hit chance as it's more likely to still be colliding with an enemy after the i-frames wear off, particularly on enemies that are large, take knockback, or are moving away from you). as another point of trivia, if you're *really* trying shade skips can be used to softlock a file by getting specific places without claw, as there's a really bizarre shade skip (involving damage tanking the shade for knock back in the air (side note: i've heard you take more knockback at lower fps values for some reason), "parrying" the shade's melee attack for extra pogos without depleting the shades health, and iirc using vengeful spirit for stalling in the air to allow the shade time to float up) that allows you to get to ancient basin by a different route where sitting on the bench you ended the video at will just trap you down there for good. that being said, those shade skips are so far out of the way that they might as well not exist for the casual/new player, and i don't think your file can do a softlock any more anyways now that it has claw.

you should also return to soul sanctum to get the shade soul, you need an elegant key which you can get from sly in dirtmouth. You also need to fight the soul warrior which is a rather hard boss. shade soul is an upgraded version of the vengeful spirit which goes ballistic with shamans stone.
iirc they can't do that quite yet as i don't think they have picked up the prerequisite shopkeeper's key as a byproduct of not having been in the area it is in. that said shopkeeper's key -> elegant key -> shade soul is valuable when they get there. (worth noting: when going up the elevator in sanctum to where the elegant key gets used there's a breakable wall to the left for a shortcut back to the bench)

shade mechanics breakdown for shade skips:
- it's attention can be triggered by proximity or damaging it
- can only go a limited distance from its spawn point before returning back and losing attention in you
- leaving the room and returning will reset everything about it, notably hp and spell casts in case you failed a shade skip but left the shade alive

I highly doubt I have the skill to pull off a shade skip I’m ngl. This was really helpful though I didn’t even know the shade could use spells.

if you dont have it yet, you need to get the ability from crystal peaks to continue from where you left off
If your good you can downslash the spikes and then dash continually to reach the other side too
