the survivalist was created by john gonzalez, the lead writer who also created most of the FONV base campaign and among many, mr. house. he deserves wider recognition.
I always love seeing those who put their hard work in getting credit for their achievement. This entire story is fantastic, extremely melancholy but you can picture how he would’ve felt all the way through.
@@younghefner8343 Not a GI, the Survivalist was an army GI, but the armor was from a Marine. He still could have carved that in himself. Also unclear where he got it. Sent back by a friend, looted in his "shopping trip" to Salt Lake City to try to find the remains of his family?
@@DIEGhostfish It could have been from Spanish Fork, there was a National Guard Armory there, and may have had the Armor in it's Inventory. However that was the place the White Legs got there weapons from. I think he also mentions finding an Overturned National Guard Truck as well, maybe came from that, but the one detail that is out of place is the fact that it's Marine Armor.
reminds me of Theodore Roosevelt's journal. His mother and wife died on the same day, he only wrote one sentence that day. " X The light has gone out of my life."
When I do the final battle of Zion I always like to use his armor and weapon. I like to think of it as the Father’s spirit coming back one last time to protect his children.
Going from the journal entry of “shes pregnant” to “I buried them” was so completely brutal. I put my hands on my head in distress over something that happened 100+ years previous
I was so involved in listening that I couldn't physically move....but when I heard him say that she too died due to complications.....I mentally facepalmed
The fact that a game can make us feel such strong emotions just shows how good of a game and how immersive of a story this truly is. The devs created an absolute masterpiece and they’ve done such a great job of actually telling a story that makes us reflect and feel things.
Best thing was realising the terminals were of one person and connecting the events then realising he was talking about the sorrows and the last letter was how they named their tribe. Amazing writing 😭

This guy's story made _All_ of Honest Hearts worth it for me. Sure, the New Canaanites and White Legs are cool and all, but there's something so melancholic about a mysterious guardian figure protecting people who will never meet him.
Not only that, but he terrified the cannibal vault survivors so badly that they thought he was a vengeful spirit. This normal guy, terrified vault dwellers so badly that they were convinced that he was a freaking ghost out to kill them!

See, THIS is writing at it's peak. A character who you never even meet but read his stories, learn of his impact on the people he helped, yes. This man's words are why I chose to side with Joshua Graham, to strike back with righteous anger is exactly what I did.
Too bad it also destroys what clark loved most about his "children", their innocence. Unless you convince Joshua to show mercy to salt upon wounds that is.@@chardaskie
I feel he’s earned the right to be mythologized by the Sorrows. His entire story is a noble one, and it is almost remarkable how he was never discovered or seen by anyone.
IMO he’s of similar calibre to the Fallout protagonists, no normal human can survive the Great War and decades in the instantly fresh wasteland along with the emotional pain he endured. He 100% deserves to be mythologised, the Sole Survivor in Fallout 4 would almost definitely live on in the mind of the Commonwealth, especially if they chose the minutemen.
Randall Clarke is hands down of the best characters of Fallout. Without being a mutant or a ghoul or an extremist human, just being a real survivor. His gear and loot are amazingly useful but the lore behind it is much better. And the place where he died is one of the best areas to watch the sky and the landscape of Zion Valley. It's...almost biblical
honest hearts is my favorite dlc of the all of fallout and this npc is why I do this as soon as I can so I can walk the wastes with the rifle and armor of my favorite dude in the game ( also it is really good gear )
i remember i found all of his notes before finishing honest hearts, but i only found his body after, when the canyon was quiet and peaceful. reading his last note from that beautiful vista, learning how he ties in with the story of zion, was a perfect footnote to the story, and the best way to finish it, in my opinion.
I just started honest hearts a few days ago and learning about the Survivalist made me wish we had more pseudo legendary figures like him in the universe. He feels like someone who fits perfectly along others like the Chosen one, vault dweller, lone wanderer, or courier.
@Duke Cola Good point. New Vegas has a lot of these 'Legendary figures' come to think of it. The Courier. The Burning Man. Caeser. The Legate. All of them carry a certain myth to them.
Father Elijah, Ulysses, Caesar, Christine and other well written characters all make the world feel alive. there's written and spoken proof of them interacting with the world that you're exploring, even years before you get shot in the head and start your journey
@@calebmapp7096 yeah, the other games had their own figures (both good and bad) as well, with the lesser known Eddie Winters, Pickman, others from fallout 4. It's all I can think of, did fallout 3 have those types of folk?
It really is one of the most bittersweet and affecting stories in Fallout. I remember the first time I played Honest Hearts, I found his body after finishing the main questline. I read the last entry, and couldn't help but imagine the Courier saying, "They made it, Randall. The kids made it. You did right."
God damn it, man, the feels I just finished honest hearts again. Imagine if the midwife of the tribe. The companion following you around would have dialogue as you find the logs slowly realizing what their religion actually was and seeing his corpse in Red Gate.
Characters like The Survivalist really show how Obsidian can flesh out one of the most interesting stories in the series that you never experience yourself
The stories told through tapes and terminals are on a whole nother level. Like how you can follow the paths of Ulysses and Elijah throughout the base game and dlcs.
Randall Dean Clark is one of the single best characters ever written in Fallout history. From a soldier, to a survivor, a father, and now a god to the tribal descendants of those he saved. A legend.
"I wish them well. It's been a gift to me, at the end of it all, to behold innocence." Rest well, Clark. Your journals were a gift to me, to behold righteousness.
There is an argument to be made that Randall Dean Clark is the only reason Zion still stands. Him dealing with the Vault 22 Refugees helped to prevent them from settling down, had they stayed, their spores may have spread through all of Zion. Destroying it and creating yet another dead and dangerous part of the Wasteland. Instead Zion stands as a paradise, a Tribe grew as a compassionate force instead of a violent one and the world was made ever so slightly brighter. I love The Survivalist, his story is so well written and so well executed. Edit: Finished the video, made me cry like his story always does. You did amazing on this dude. It was a retelling worthy of such an amazing character.
@@moodyowlproductions4287 there are yes. However those are localized around where Vault Dwellers fell. Theres only a few very small places. Had the Dwellers been allowed to settle and really take over the canyon, the whole place could have been tainted.
@@TheValkyre0 yep...still why are there spore carriers In Zion if the vault 22 people all left the place all together in the Frist place....it boggles the mind..just saying?
@@moodyowlproductions4287 So the ones who died had spores too. Those spores would have been able to set down small roots in little pockets. Likely the Spore Carriers we fight are those original dwellers who were already too far gone when they took a bullet and the Spore plants are from the few spores that had time to root. Which is horrifying. If Vault 22 left a mark on Zion even though most of the dwellers died or left. Imagine if they hadnt? Imagine if they could have stuck around.
I just remembered a fact from I think either 1 or 2, there's a ghoul named Charlotte who says she's from Salt lake, so maybe his wife survived the blasts
His story is why I never listen to Daniel in running from the White Legs, Randall would want them to stand their ground and fight. His death and all his contributions would be in vain if they didn't defend Zion.
Exactly, more importantly, Daniel's a blind idealist. While he has good intentions, they are ultimately meaningless. Yes, they protect the Sorrows innocence, but at what price? And given time as the world heals, people will find them and he won't be around to save them. Everyone ultimately suffers by running away and last but not least, no matter what you choose, he ends up miserable. If he was more realistic in his ideals, he would find peace in the idea of standing their ground and fighting back. Of course, you should have Joshua show mercy in the end so that a good lesson can be learned.

I have over 1000 hours on record in New Vegas but never experienced this story. Of course I found several entries to Survivalist diary but they were out of order and I never bothered to find all. It's probably the most emotional story from Fallout universe I have ever experienced. Thank you so much!
@@Idle1996 Mods bruh. Seriously though - just 'Tale of Two Wastelands' (mod combining FNV and F3) with 'A World of Pain' (mod adding huge amount of dungeons) provides around 500 hours of fun. Imagine beating both Fallouts and their DLC's in any order you want, with gear from both games.
I think about Randall Dean Clark a lot. The first time I read through his complete entries I had to try hard not to cry. His role was one of the most minor in Fallout yet easily had some of the most depth and realism to it. Lines like _"black rain is falling - geiger jumping."_ always stick in my mind for some reason.
It's because it's written like actual thoughts. Observations. he's talking to himself through the text, nnever expecting to be found, so he doesn't embelish or over-describe. He says what he will need to remember. Which makes the text pop as 'human' and exists inside of his characterization
It was absolutely brilliant writing, and moved me more than any other story in the Fallout universe. There is a much less fleshed out story in Fallout 4 of a couple who had to bury their kids in their bunker and couldn't live with the pain, opting to commit suicide together, which was quite powerful. But the story of Randall Clark is masterful and so vivid. Whoever is responsible for writing it deserves more recognition for it. The fact that I don't know his name makes this more evident.
When I hear “oh they should make fallout movie/series” I immediately think of this story. No vaults, no dwellers, no saving the world. Just a man trying to survive and doing the best he can to help others. Failing sometimes. Falling sometimes. Filled with regrets. But doing his best. P.S. loving the sound effects you added, your vids are amazing, thank you very very much.
An attempt at a Fallout movie was made after the release of F1, and you'd be glad it never even happend, the story was a clusterfuck according to the leaked script.
Only way to do fallout justice is to write an anthology series that focuses on the legendary characters as well as the people like the survivalist. No grand narratives, just snapshots of wasteland legends.
@@mcbamm5683 I agree, in general most games can't be made into conventional movie franchises, it is better the way you say it, anthologies, small pieces of the whole story or even parts that are not seen but talked off in-game, say like the rise of the legion or the destruction of Canaan
Whenever I visit Zion, I always make time to visit Randal. I made a promise that my character will forever will not only wander the desert wasteland of the Mojave. But his home of Zion too. I saw my character taking the armor as a passing of the torch.
I always make a point of visiting his caves, reading his notes, and taking a trip to his final resting place. He's the reason Honest Hearts is second only to Old World Blues for me.
Everytime I've played honest hearts, I read the journals, and when I found the man, I left him a bottle of whiskey and sat down to enjoy one myself with an honorable man, one who I, in some ways, still look up to, Even though he's fictional
Before reading the notes I thought Randal Clark was just a random dead skeleton that just happend to be carrying a unique gun,but after reading all his notes and watching this his gun has became my main weapon of choice and I honor the gun
Jesus Christ, I was actually crying by the end. It's such a bittersweet conclusion to an emotional roller coaster of a story. This story is the artistic potential of a video game made manifest, and yet it's a series of god damn _terminal entries._ I love and hate how genuinely heart wrenching this video is.
I immediately took care of the white-legs and then returned to Zion to finish the lore of Randall. Randall, Joshua, Follows-chalk and Daniel got me very invested in Zion. Rip Randall.
I absolutely adored how the Sorrows mythologized him and how they are effortlessly blending that mythology into New Canaanite religion. The whole tribal part of fallout enthralls me to no end and I just love the way humans take something we know and have an understanding of and apply it to something new and some bastardized creation comes about and eventually becomes its own stand alone thing. Also Randal Clarks armor is hands down my favorite Ranger armor set in the whole game, sure the lonesome road ones are neat, but the story that armor tells alone is just *chef's kiss*
The way Daniel mixed the sorrows religion with Christianity was the best outcome of their conversion just a chefs kiss on honest hearts also the dude that played Daniel was the same guy that voiced Vito scaletta from mafia 2 and 3
THIS is the movie fallout needs to make, THIS is a movie I would proudly watch over and over again. The amount of details, the emotional rollercoaster from what was. What could be, and what is just gives me goosebumps! I would 100% back it if they did a fundraiser to make this a movie. Hell, most of the movie could be an inner monolog of Clark's thoughts as he's writing in the computer or making the notes. Best part is even if the movie ended up be about 3 hours long people WILL watch it because this story is just that good. This "little" side story is more detailed and more emotionally immersive than any of the mainline quests from any fallout game. I'm not very interested in finding my father and then being forced to repair a purifier, I'm not interested in finding my son only for him to be part of an essentially evil shadow organization. I'm not interested in the events of fallout 1 and 2 either. I AM however interested in the mainline new vegas story and this one right here. I'm also interested in the story of "the burned man" as it also is great movie material. I'm not the only one thinking this right?
@Skeleton Family I know the general storyline of one and two. I have watched a few playthroughs but never have played it myself. Games are interesting, characters are definitely cool and I love the behind the scenes on how they made things work. But story wise they do not entertain me as much as this story right here does.
Its kind of sad to realize that Randall Clark has a somewhat similar outlook when it comes to having a child with Kellogg in FO4 and that is fear, the fear of being a father in such a harsh and dangerous time.
That story hit extremely hard for me at the end. After my ex passed away I thought about taking my own life. I chose to keep going on to honor her memory and try to make the most of what she left behind. I failed her, but I simply can’t let her memory die. Can’t believe a story in fallout got to my heart strings. Never give up.
literally same… same bro. Stay strong. I always remember that if you love someone and they love you. To make sure that they KNOW that their love is accepted and that they KNOW THEY are loved. Because tomorrow is never guaranteed. If they ever end up in the hospital. Never leave their side and never hold anything outside of their control against them. Love you Persephone you didn’t deserve this baby. Cystic fibrosis is a bitch but you can breath easier now babe. Much love to all my brothers and sisters out there. Don’t let your blinders keep you from recognizing the Angel infront of you before she is recalled back to heaven. I didn’t realize an Angel was sitting infront of me the entire relationship until she was called back to heaven and now I’m kicking myself. Treat your Angel here on earth like they should be treated and how you’d want to be treated or longed for.
This is such a beautiful and touching story. To think that it was just from some terminal entries is nuts. Fallout New Vegas has the best writing of any game ever
@@foxxy46213 yea, but so does the last of us, and mother 3, and even CoD sometimes. Where I feel like fallout shines is in it's attention to worldbuilding . how they can make a world seem so real with these small details. That's why I think NV has the best writing in all of gaming tbh
One of the few people in the fallout universe you can really say only did his best to help others. No ulterior motives, or self gain, man just wanted good people to survive and lead the best life they could in what was left of the world. And yet, no matter how much he did to this end, he was one of the most haunted over the people he couldn't save. A shame, but I suppose it shows his compassion for others was the most genuine thing about him.
Randall Clark, a true legend, the tragic hero of Honest Hearts, and one of Fallout's best characters, despite having been long dead. A man who saw things no one should've, living through countless tragedies, a guardian to those who would call Zion home, and the boogeyman to those who would dare harm others. May this man rest in peace.
_This_ type of storytelling is where the world of Fallout really shines. It just fits so well with the setting. They do a lot of similar environmental storytelling, but rarely is it given this level of detail and care. I want more items/locations/stories like this!

After a few years, I replayed Honest Hearts, because I genuinely enjoy it. When I stumbled across the first Survivalist's terminal and I read the journal, his story came flooding back from some suppressed memory. So I made it my goal to find every journal entry, and when I found his body, I actually started sobbing. This is the power of great story-telling and lore.
I finished Honest Hearts today, and boy, did I ruin it. I ousted the White Legs, but at what cost? I felt regret as I stepped back into the Mojave, Daniel’s words echoing in my head about the Sorrow’s loss of innocence. What have I done? Forgive me, Mama. Forgive me for what I am about to do, Father in the Cave. But I am going to slay every last Legionnaire in the Mojave for what they did to your children in the Sorrows tribe

I'm not the type to cry during much, but after I read through the terminal, I did exactly what you did. The more I looked at his body, the more the melancholy of his story settled in and I started crying. Imagine only ever protecting people but always ending up alone in the end. If there was ever a fallout movie it should follow Clark's life. Done in the same style as the road, it would definitely be one of the best ways to do some of the best writing in the fallout series justice.
@@aaronbozigian4310 I couldnt finish it. I tried a few times and couldnt even get most of the way through. Reason being, it was too heartbreaking for me.
This story actually had a profound effect on me growing up, I remember playing Fallout: NV back in 2013 on my Xbox 360... I would have been 15. Unraveling this story was an actual expedition in archeology. Connecting dots out of sequence, checking dates, and taking notes in my little IRL notebook. I have never been so caught off guard and compelled by a hidden narrative and haven't been since, I had hoped we'd see stuff like this in "The Outer Worlds" but unfortunately that game went for more of a light-hearted tone. This is what fallout should strive for... we as players will make the silly moments stand out, give us the world that breaks people and show the exceptionalism in the people who refuse to break.
The Survivalist, New Caananites, White Legs and Joshua Graham-- Honest Hearts is probably one of the most well-written DLCs in the history of gaming in terms of story writing and character dialogue.
This man was severely tormented from his time in the army to his surviving the Great War. It’s amazing that he managed to keep sane despite not having another person to socialize with for over a decade. It’s as if he lived in open air solitary confinement.
"A man’s character is most evident by how he treats those who are not in a position either to retaliate or reciprocate." ― Paul Eldridge "Love is not affectionate feeling, but a steady wish for the loved person's ultimate good as far as it can be obtained." ― C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
Both of those quotes are nice, but in my experience demonstrably false. Every kind act comes with the expectation of some kind of reciprocation (even if it is just an expectation of gratitude and affection). And, considering how I've rarely seen anyone sacrifice themselves for their ex partners (or for that matter, work towards another person's 'ultimate good') I can't say much for the other quote either. All things considered, I think those are quotes designed to make people feel better about themselves and our species, which is nice I suppose. Ultimately though, it's a special kind of delusional egotism on our part
@@AeneasGemini I'm very sorry for you for being really unfortunate to see/experience it. but I genuinely received this kind of love and I wished to give it to other people too. If you don't believe me nor you believe yourself that you will never give and receive true love, then there's no point of living anymore isn't it? as you are already in despair and only suffering and hatred awaits you in the future.
He is a lot better at reconnaissance than the other protagonists, keeping his distance (sometimes he did get too close as Synonymous said). He is excellent at stealth as a result, if he is slipping random stuff into camps in varying scenarios, he has become experienced at that. He does have good infiltration experience as well, most of that camp of "coughers" was guarded, but he found that one spot that wasn't. The man is also great at guerilla warfare, ambushing patrols of soldiers from time to time, the rigging of traps on their firearms and corpses for any other unsuspecting patrol that finds them, and he traps his own place due to the paranoia. Compared to the protagonists who normally runs into a lot of situations blind, guns blazing, now they of course win these engagements due to plot armor or shoddy ai, but the main character seem to lack actual military experience, all except the sole survivor but he's so fish out of water, that he wouldn't have survived if not for the minutemen and clueless settlers existing. If time wasn't an issue, I think the real trouble he'd have would have been the Lone Wanderer and Courier, they are both great at adapting to the nearby areas and one of them survived two shots to the head, recovered, and ran all the way to Vegas on foot to track down the guy who shot him. The other was able to take serious radiation damage before completely dying and swiftly changed with the new world that he stepped into. With the proper distance and understanding of how they go about their lives, he can exploit that and seeing as he would have the element of surprise, he'd probably take them out before they even realized anybody was there.
@@supergenius6256 While your points are good, I have a feeling that if the Survivalist saw the Courier flying at Mach 2 with a .357 Magnum he would just have a heart attack
endgame protagonists would absolutely annihilate the Survivalist but beginning to mid-game they would get slaughtered themselves, the LW is a literal TEENAGER out of a vault, the Sole Survivior may have military training but he sure as hell isn't as experienced as the Survivalist, the Courier is more nomadic and technically better at surviving than LW and SS but he won't be able to beat the Survivalist in a 1v1
This story made me cover my mouth in horror, cheer for Clark's vengance, and cry (literally) at his losses. It's so charged with emotions that it almost feels real. Like Clark was a real person. It boggles my mind how this set of terminal entries are just a blip on the radar for most. Honest Hearts changed who I was when I played it the first time. And just like Clark, I can never go back.
And this is why I always support Joshua at the end of the DLC -- it makes no sense to support Daniel's plan to flee the canyon when both Randall's entries and Graham's philosophy make it clear that you should take a stand and fight for what you have, even if it's outside your comfort zone.
Yeah I disliked that it was considered a negative ending. Helping them learn how to defend themselves in the context of the world is the best thing you can do for them. If you get them to run, they are only doomed to run until they have nowhere to run. Plus of all the places we've seen, DC, Pittsburg, Mojave, Pointe Lookout. I'd say the only place really worth fighting for is zion because of how lush it is.
God this is such a great story. The fact that it was not even a quest is just beautiful. Joshua Graham is my favorite character in the game but my favorite person in fallout lore is the father in the caves.
Most likely a precursor of the Bloatfly, since Cazadores were genetically engineered in Big MT and only started spreading fairly recent in the Fallout timeline.
I absolutely loved your narration of this, as a South African Scout and outdoorsman I love these stories so much, I also thoroughly enjoy the Fallout series and other survival games as it's such an interesting genre for me! I was doing a playthrough with fallout 4 as a cannibal with strong as my companion (The only one who agree's with those type of ways) and when we were in a cave system, he said: ''These caves helped someone do plenty of killing, he didn't know how lucky he was to find them'' That always stuck with me, and now watching this story I believe that they are connected, as at a similar time I remember doing a quest near a survivalists old shelter. Either way, even if not, brilliant story, I enjoyed this so much! :D
Holy crap you weren't lying when you said you were making something special lol I'm only 2 mins in and can tell it's a banger also good job picking topics people don't usually do
I've played this dlc and read the note probably 5 times and know the story by heart yet this just hit me like a ton of bricks. It's a devastating story...
I cried to this. That man deserved nothing bad happening to him, and it pains me to hear his story. He didn't revel in killing, he was troubled, and he had those he had loved taken away from him. Only when he had something, his body failed him and it was too late to enjoy it. But at least he's with his loved ones. Rest in Peace, Randall.
As you explained the beginning i was able to imagine the bombing and the fear in the eyes of those elderly couple. And then a small piece of hope in there body posture as he said help is coming, as he slowly raise his gun to put them out of their doomed life
After using all his strength and willpower to survive through half a century of hardship and loss, living for others and defending them to the best of his ability, his greatest feat of strength was allowing himself to die.
The most compelling thing about Randall’s story is that he found himself in a situation where I be myself , and I think many would agree, would 100% resort to suicide. But he just resolved to keep going regardless, and ended up living a fulfilling life because of it. Very inspiring
God this is just incredible Synonymous, its so comprehensive & you deliver the story so well! Its a goddamn tragedy that every fallout fan on earth *isn't* subscribed to you
This was an absolute masterpiece and I love it. Also, "The father" watching over "The children of Zion", feels like it's just too exact to not be based on jeudao-christian stuff (Which also makes the comments about "the mexicans" thanking God a bit more on the nose after, all be it 30 years later, Clark ended up being like "god" to the children).

In the game, Daniel (the missionary) talks about the parallels between the Sorrow's religion of the Father in the Caves and what he tries to teach them from the Bible, saying that it's a blessing that they are better able to learn.
It definitely is a connection. The ironic moment of Clark scoffing at God emphasizes how just how much Clark would assume that god-like role. Especially because the death of the Mexicans is a parallel to the great war and how he, Clark had done what he scoffed at God for doing...allowing the deaths of the innocents he loved.
I think it speaks volumes of the type of writing that was put into FNV when this side-character in a DLC, who only exists through journals and environmental storytelling, has a very compelling and emotional story all on his own, despite never actually appearing, save for a skeleton. I don't know who wrote the story of the Survivalist, but I hope you continue to write short stories such as these
I just recently played this DLC again and cried my eyes out at Clark's story. The way you tell it is so beautiful and peaceful, bringing tears to my eyes once more.
This story brings me to tears every time I hear it. It is, hand-down, my single favorite tale in the Fallout universe. I hope I can one day be as kind and righteous and as strong as Randall Dean Clark.
Thank you for telling this man’s story fictional or not, he shall be remembered. After hearing the section about his second family i couldn’t help but get emotional. The sheer will this man had to continue going after all he’s been through is insane. Not only that, he didn’t become bitter & continued to give what he had to complete strangers.
I was really looking forward to this. The writing of those journals are out of this world. That is why we need another Fallout from Obsidian. No questions asked.
Really, we need another Fallout from Obsidian because their Devs are more competent. However, I would like to add that Obsidian disappointed me with NV; simply because they botched the ending. I wanted to play right on after beating the main quest, and the first time I was hit with the “nope you can’t” it soured me to Obsidian. I haven’t played Outerworlds, so idk if it has that problem; but if Obsidian fixed it, then I’d be cool with having them remake NV, or put out a new Fallout game. Just without multiplayer or co-op.
@@Dank-gb6jn Oh boy. Where to even start with this. You are not suppose to keep playing after the ending. Bethesda messed this up with Fallout 3. I remember I was just wondering around Zion back in 2011, and found a skeleton with a duffel. Looted it and didn't give it a second thought. Saw the rifle iron sights were busted and put the gun in the penthouse to be forgotten until I made a new character. 2016, I popped FNV back into my 360, and booted up a new run. Only this time I read as much lore and heard every NPC I could. I went into a deep dive on Joshua Graham, and Randall Clark when I entered Zion. I always wondered why there were so many traps in certain caves in Zion. Reading the terminals I found the story and when I wondered into that skeleton again, I actually pay some respects (I leave a couple broc flowers, and a bottle of whiskey in the duffel.)
The one story of Fallout that always makes me choke up, tragic in nearly every way but the Father seems to always bring a little smile whenever I hear the reverence he gains from the ones he cared for
This dude's whole life is just misery and pain, but he stayed resolute enough to not only stay a good person but stay alive as well. Honestly, he's one of the coolest characters in Fallout for me.
I always imagined that “The school” The children referred to was that one vault underneath a school in fallout 4, where children were tested to the death to extract their genes or something. It’s mentioned that eventually a group of kids managed to fight their way out. Yes I know fallout 4 was released after vegas, I’m saying that it could be a nod to it.

This is a movie, I watched it slowly, over the course of it few hours in between doing other things and it was a lovely experience, thank you for illustrating Clark's story in such a perfect fashion.
Clark's story is one of the best in Fallout lore. A man who wishes with every fiber of his being to be dead but yet his training and instincts keep him alive decades after the end of the world. It's closer to a Greek tragedy of old then any video game. A man who fought across the expense of Canada to be sent home to survive a nuclear exchange, the fallout and what amounts to a war inside Zion Canyon. He wouldn't go down in a hail of gunfire or in hand-to-hand combat with some enemy but would die on a rock as an old man. sounds like novel material to me.
Finding him in Honest Hearts just made me pause for a moment and look around, I had found all the cave logs so it was wondering if I'd see an end to the story, it was so painful, but the ending was so peaceful, and beautful.
From an interconnecting emotional standpoint, in our timeline the viewers of this video could feasibly be that elderly couple he helped. Really adds unintentional depth and investment.

They accidentally wrote the story of the protagonist that the player isn't.
I just started honest hearts a few days ago and learning about the Survivalist made me wish we had more pseudo legendary figures like him in the universe. He feels like someone who fits perfectly along others like the Chosen one, vault dweller, lone wanderer, or courier.

It's been a gift to me, at the end of it all, to behold innocence."
Rest well, Clark.

One of the biggest gut punches I’ve had playing fallout came from those journal entries, and it was just three words. “They ate them.”

Hell, most of the movie could be an inner monolog of Clark's thoughts as he's writing in the computer or making the notes. Best part is even if the movie ended up be about 3 hours long people WILL watch it because this story is just that good.
I like how even when he killed himself, where he died bloomed with flowers symbolizing the giving life idea of his story. I know it's probably because he got infected by one of the vault 22 dwellers but was still a real nice touch.

@@Mate_Antal_Zoltantbf he lived for 30 more years after Sylvia's death, so I don't think the spores had anything to do with the "blooming" around his skull
@@Synonymous101 well, we don't know what the tiniest amounts of the spores would do to someone, so it could be plausible that they simply just weren't strong enough in their numbers to give Clark symptoms

The Survivalist is one of those characters that you learn about and you wish that you could be that character for someone
I love his set of armor and his story, truly a unique character that fills an interesting little spot in the amazing story of New Vegas.
The Outer Worlds went for more of a “worst rpg I have ever played in my life” tone.
But Im not surprised by that. TOW was made by different people
The Survivalist, New Caananites, White Legs and Joshua Graham-- Honest Hearts is probably one of the most well-written DLCs in the history of gaming in terms of story writing and character dialogue.
Such a gem of a background story that’s so easy to miss in Honest Hearts.
This man was severely tormented from his time in the army to his surviving the Great War. It’s amazing that he managed to keep sane despite not having another person to socialize with for over a decade. It’s as if he lived in open air solitary confinement.
Come for the burning man, stay for the survivalist
Clark is one of the best written characters in the Fallout Universe.
And yet he's a character I never got to spoke to.
"A man’s character is most evident by how he treats those who are not in a position either to retaliate or reciprocate."
― Paul Eldridge
"Love is not affectionate feeling, but a steady wish for the loved person's ultimate good as far as it can be obtained."
― C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
"Love. It's not an emotion. Love is a promise." - The Doctor

This is such a sad story yet an uplifting one. Father lost *everything* twice. Yet he was able to find purpose and finaly a good ending.
For some reason, I always got this feeling that the survivalist would have absolutely destroyed all the fallout protagonists

Im not crying you are.. no seriously this video was AMAZINGLY put together and Randalls story is a true masterpiece.
And this is why I always support Joshua at the end of the DLC -- it makes no sense to support Daniel's plan to flee the canyon when both Randall's entries and Graham's philosophy make it clear that you should take a stand and fight for what you have, even if it's outside your comfort zone.
Anything worth having is worth fighting for
Yeah I disliked that it was considered a negative ending.

That’s what I thought, also they’ve probably lost any of idea of religion in this wasteland so he wants to give them hope

I've heard this story so many times, still it gets better
Revelation has been unfolding since Jesus died. The Popes have claimed to be equal to God and set themselves in Jesus' place (antichrist(s)). Vatican City (Which is its own nation BTW) have risen up to fulfill the role of the false prophet
Regarding the man of lawlessness or antichrist, 2 Thessalonians 2:4 says “Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” The restrainer that the Apostle Paul was referring to in 2 Thessalonians was the Western Roman Emperor, who held back the Popes from taking power. Once the last Western Roman Emperor was removed from power in 476 AD, the Pope was given civil and ecclesiastic authority over Rome; healing the deadly head wound of the beast in Revelation 13, as they took the Emperors title of Pontifex Maximus, leader of the church and state.
“We may according to the fullness of our power, dispose of the law and dispense above the law. Those whom the Pope of Rome doth separate, it is not a man that separates them but God. For the Pope holdeth place on earth, not simply of a man but of the true God.” (Source: “Decretals of Gregory IX,” Book 1, chapter 3.)
Pope Pius V blasphemed, “The Pope and God are the same, so he has all power in Heaven and earth.” (Source: Pope Pius V, quoted in Barclay, Cities Petrus Bertanous Chapter XXVII: 218.)
Pope Leo XIII declared, “We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty.” (Source: Pope Leo XIII Encyclical Letter, June 20, 1894)
The antichrist sea beast of Revelation points to the office of the papacy, the Popes of Rome, who controlled the Roman beast for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 AD.
Daniel 7:25 says “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” The Popes of Rome spoke against Elohim and proclaimed to be God. They reigned for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 AD. during which they caused tens of millions of saints to be killed.

How was someone able to write something so touching for a videogame, this should be a book
This is the one DLC I turned over every Rick with to get the story.
It's amazing writing and such a good story of strife, anguish, and acceptance of one's own life
This is a movie, I watched it slowly, over the course of it few hours in between doing other things and it was a lovely experience, thank you for illustrating Clark's story in such a perfect fashion.
@Mann Dude
No question about it, this made the Honest Hearts dlc stick with me for years after I played it.
From an interconnecting emotional standpoint, in our timeline the viewers of this video could feasibly be that elderly couple he helped. Really adds unintentional depth and investment.
