It's because the broken steel DLC added in new stronger enemies and Bethesda forgot that they will kill NPCs. This was a problem in Oblivion as well when you reached higher levels. NPCs outside of cities would easily die to stronger enemies. Skyrim still had some issues but not as bad. If you took down dragons fast then you will be fine. They patched the vampire attacks out. Fallout 4 the merchants will just go down but not die. But they can be killed if you hit them, so be careful. Especially if you are using explosives. I found out because I used missiles and notice the doctor merchant died so I reloaded and used a gun and he survived. As the missile explosion had affected him and killed him. So I try not to hit the merchants now when I see them fighting enemies. Fallout 3 at later levels, you may lose all those traveling merchants to high level enemies, which sucks. Glad they changed it in Fallout 4 at least. It was just poor balancing by Bethesda. I didn't mention New Vegas since it wasn't made by them but NV mostly kept enemies in territories so it was never a problem in NV. Albino radscorpions, feral ghoul Reaver's and super mutant overlords all were damage sponges from broken steel so that we had tougher enemies to fight at higher levels. Bethesda just forgot the NPCs were vulnerable to them.
Karma at its finest. I oddly feel like the Outcasts were more xenophobic and dismissive than any other chapter and because of that, it crippled their chances the most. Lyons succeeded through kindness, Maxson succeeded through compromise, there's probably a reason the Outcasts weren't the main focal point of 3 or even why they didn't try to battle the Enclave, despite their goals literally lining up with the main Brotherhood Chapter in DC.
Its so funny to me that the outcasts are basically the brotherhood members that MAINTAINTED the original ideology and didn't empathies with the people of the Capital Wasteland

I always liked the Outcasts when I was a kid, even if they were pricks. Their armor paint and matching robots always fascinated me since I loved and still love Fallout 3's robots.
It would've been dope if one of the main missions was to recruit the outcasts for the assault on the Memorial, I can see how the interests of the two groups would even align for that fight.
if you kill sibley without being detected he doesnt start a mutiny when the vault opens. i do that nearly every playthrough cause the outcasts are badass
But in a sense, Lyons followed the Ideology of the Brotherhood, as Supermutants could be considered a result of technology which ran amok. Therefor finding and destroying the source of the supermutants is one of the duties of the brotherhood
Which is why the chapter did not split the moment the course change happened. It was after months and months of fruitless fighting and dying whilst ignoring every other objective they hold sacred. The Outcasts did not disagree with fighting mutants they disagree with Lyons 'going native' caring more about fighting the DC super mutant infestation than any anything else and getting good Brothers and Sisters killed for it even recruiting wastelanders into the faction just to make up the bodies he was throwing into the grinder. Honestly if you take a step back and look at the whole Lyons brotherhood they are a troubling case of an old mans obsession getting alot of people killed fighting for what sounds like a noble goal, when you know if they had stuck to their job of scouting sites around DC for valuable tech they would have found the source of the muties.
The split didn’t happen right away, but took a bit of time. After The Pitt they were all strained and on edge. The reprioritising of goals was the first step toward the split. The recruitment of the Pitt kids and other Wastelanders was another. But it was the focus on helping the civilians with Project Purity and other ventures that pushed Casdin over the edge.
@@RhulkFunnyMoments I can't say they're bad people, but they're definitely WAY dumber than they like to think the common Wastelander is. Especially if they actively ignored their duty and didn't help reclaim the memorial from the Enclave.
So they are literally Black Knights. Pretty cool concept. Though I find it a little hard to believe that NO ONE in an entire faction of former brotherhood of steel members had a single pip boy.
There's cut content where there was a holotape next to the dead Gary in the OA DLC location, where one outcast tried getting the pip-boy from him. I don't think it was ever explained what happened to the pip-boy. Maybe the video mentions it, I'm not sure.

@@TheMelancholicWriter I mean disregarding the Vault Tec side, imagine it as a pre-war military tool. You strap it on, it jabs your arm, it meshes with your biometric signature, then it keeps track of basically everything for you. It keeps track of important dates, notes, mission info and parameters, vital signs; it can administer stimpacks directly into your bloodstream as well as alert you to damaging ambient ionizing radiation. Losing one of these would be a massive security risk - imagine you're killed in action and the enemy gets their hands on it? All your potentially classified data is there, your biometric data which might include security clearances is there, your contacts, possible info on experimental tech, etc etc is all there. If it were a military tool, or a tool designed by Vault Tec based off existing military tech, then it makes total sense as to why it would become inoperable unless voluntarily removed by the wearer; forcible removal would destroy it and everything on it which protects against theft/falling into enemy hands, it prevents misplacing of this highly sophisticated piece of equipment, it prevents mix-ups because until reset by the current owner it cannot be used even by different users who also own a pipboy. I imagine in a structured setting where it was originally implemented there would be harsh punishments for anyone caught removing their pipboy or worse losing one.
@kryuzaki9862 all of that makes sense...till you see how in fallout 4 he just picks it up and it auto syncs with him, but you still have a really good point
Timely! I was playing F3 last night fast-traveled with Charon the outcast base so I could cut through the building full of Super Mutants to get to another location. I had already gone through the whole 'Alaska' simulation, and knew the Super Mutant would be respawning in the building in front of the base entrance elevator ramp. What I didn't expect was three minigun toting Outcasts to be all agro and start blasting at me and Charon, as well as the Super Mutants. Charon died three times before I could get a handle on how to beat the situation. I just don't remember those Outcast guys being agro there before. Fun anyway.
I still remember being a low level in fallout, when I just started. And I was getting my arsse handed too me by some creature in the wasteland, then then these guys walked by, and saved me. Then left with no explanation
What is kind of ironic is that if they had kept to their original objective, and looked for lost tech and data-bases. They likely would have found information on the local vaults sooner than they did. While the Super Mutants were a large force and a considerable threat, the Elder could have appeased both sides by creating a Task Force that would handle the search for technology. While the bulk of their forces would act in support should there be a large mutant presence in the area.
Considering that there is a old vault-tec building in D.C., where you can find in the quest from old Lady Agnes Informations about the whereabouts of other vaults, it could be
If you compare the Brotherhood from Tactics with the Brotherhood under Lyons, they seem to be on similar wavelengths. Makes me wonder if, despite their words to the contrary, the East Coast Brotherhood did in fact make contact with their Midwest cousins and were inspired by them.
In fallout 4 your learn that Elder Maxson re-integrated the outcasts back into the brotherhood and that they established contact with the midwestern bos !
@@whateverbro6818 Maxon sent expeditions all over the eastern US as to learn what was going in in these regions. That's how they ended up learning about the institute and the mutant problem in the Boston area.
Makes me sad that Bethesda considers fallout tactics not Canon. Undoubtedly the Midwestern chapter was the strongest chapter. Simply because of their open mindedness and versatility. Willing to recruit any one who was disciplined enough to obey orders. From tribals to ghouls, even smart super mutants. Not only giving them numerical strength, but also unique soldiers. Imagine a Midwestern paladin alongside a minigun toting super mutant annihilating everything in their path. That is a sight to behold.
Honestly, it felt like these guys were thrown in as an afterthought. There could have been an entire game built around this concept, instead it was a throwaway plotline.
Cut content, the main quest was supposed to feature a section requiring interaction between Lyons brotherhood and the Outcasts. Which was to have multiple drastic possible outcomes that were evidently far too much effort to do for Beth.
@@MoonlitMike Most likely what happened. The Skyrim civil war had to be massively toned down because consoles of the time simply couldnt handle it as well. Ulfric would constantly be on the ground fighting with his troops, giants would fight with stormcloaks, trebuchets assualting towns, and a unique city conquest where opposing forces could overthrow occupied cities if the dragonborn didnt arrive fast enough. Instead we have small skirmishes in each town while the whole plotline ignores massive plot points such as the Emperor's assassination or being able to show Ulfric the thalmor dossier on him.
I really wish the outcasts had a bigger role in the wastes. It'd be neat to perhaps have a questline where you could completely bring together the Brotherhood and Outcasts, or perhaps further intensify relations. Would disregard what would be future events [lore] in F4, but it'd make Fallout 3 that much more enjoyable.

Small point, but I’m sure the brotherhood was aware the mutants in DC were not from California due to the visible differences alone. Which IMO makes the situation that much more concerning and could actually give some credence to Elder Lyons change of goals.
I believe Lyons and The LW plus the Lyon's Pride etc deserved more mention In FO4... A wonderful work as always I love seeing people making such amazing detailed and explanational Lore Videos because the game needs that
if the theories where true then the FO4 BOS are purposely not giving Lyon's history any attention since according to some theories, the Outcasts assassinated Lyons and used Maxon to retake Lyon's BOS.
Lyons brotherhood had more technology, firepower, manpower, training, skills, influence and stability than the outcast ever have. And that’s when stopping super mutants was top priority and technology second. It really shows how time has changed and the brotherhood have to adapt just like new vegas tells us. I believe the west would have agreed with Lyons to some degree if they saw the numbers ( properly ) and how there’s a super mutant factory. We know that lot of the elders felt like that in the west. Interplay wanted to change Brotherhood elements as seen in fallout tactics ( which is reference a lot in fallout 4 ) and fallout brotherhood of steel ( which also reference a lot ). Another thing fallout bible isn’t entirely non cannon though.
This is a weird request but I’d love to hear lore about fallout’s soda companies, Nuka cola is everywhere and has so many offshoots, and Sunset sarsaparilla’s star caps were an intriguing collectible
With the Fort Independence mod that expands the sub-faction of the Outcasts I roleplayed that my lone wanderer agreed with them, worked for them, was made a initiate, and became as mission objective oriented as them. My character was to the Outcasts what Sarah Lyons was to the Brotherhood. Since my character met the Outcasts before the Brotherhood, I roleplayed into that further by acting aloof towards many of the Brotherhood members for their foolish savior complexes. Pretty fun roleplay I must say. You go from wanting to save the wasteland to a technology obsessed isolationist that will gun down scavengers and raiders for scraps of energy weapons or power armor. You also start buying and trading for every piece of advanced tech you find. It makes scavving and trading far more interesting than you'd think.
Man the shoulders of outcasts always make me think how much it would fuck you up of the charged at you and shoulder checked you in the face/jaw with those heavy, scratched, metal pauldrans 🤪🥲
I understand the outcasts reason for wanting to follow the intended course but the supermutants would directly effect their ability to hunt for more tech. If you have the mutants out there in such heavy numbers you risk being ambushed anywhere you go in the DC ruins
Always was fond of the Brotherhood Outcasts and their attitudes is actually pretty rational in the context of what is going on in the wasteland at that time.
I like how elder Maxon tried to bring back the old bos but instead of his troops getting the institutes technology they opted for nukes with liberty prime
The institute technology is technology the BOS doesn't want people using. It's creating synths and FEV. BOS ddoes destroy tech to keep it out of people's hands, so it makes sense to destroy the base so that nobody else can use it. This falls in line with BOS goals.
What would’ve been cool is if BGS had designed a metro system under the Citadel. The Pentagon has its own metro system, and having a Brotherhood of Steel mission to clear the tunnels would’ve been neat.
The lore from Fallout all the way thru to Fallout 4, is absolutely huge. There is SO much stuff that just gets overlooked if you don’t pay close attention. I need to reply them all... especially 3 tho, I hardly remember the story.
I played fallout 3 when i was like 15ish and I remember having such a black and white understanding of the outcasts, I knew it was deeper as i got older and played 4 and new vegas but it was nice to hear the full story.
See, the Outcasts complain that the BoS had stopped gathering tech. Except they didn't. Even under Lyons, they were still gathering tech they found. They just ALSO focused on helping people and stopping the Supermutant threat. Which seems like a lot more critical task. If the mutants aren't stopped, then it doesn't matter if they're gathering tech, there will be no humanity left to save.
The outcasts were an interesting group because they were essentially considered one of the bad guys in Fallout 3 since they fought against the BoS, but they are literally following the ways of the brotherhood from Fallout 1 and 2 where they could be considered one of the good guys depending on how you play.
Honestly a fallout game with rad spiders instead of rad scorpions would be pretty cool. Their both of the arachnid family, quite possible spiders get benefits similar to scorpions when the bombs fell and FEV altered their DNA. What’d be crazy is not only the venom you could harvest from their fangs in possibly some spears or crossbows, but also their webs. Think about it: the webbing from spiders mutated on the scale of rad scorpions could quite possibly have webs as strong as steel. They’d have to be to hold up spiders that big and honestly could play into the game as a resource for weapons and armor crafting.
honestly the number of times I've heard "the best explanation is in the non-canon fallout bible" is so insane that im generally baffled that they made that book non cannon
Of interesting note, has anybody else noticed that after the integration of the Outcasts into the newly reformed BoS that the Brotherhood took on their black and red color scheme? I just realized that, maybe as a tribute to their loyalty to the cause, as Lyons was technically a radical. As a kid I thought the Outcasts were dickhead traitors, but now as an adult it actually all makes perfect sense.
No, because i noticed that my choices didnt mean sh*t. I destroyed the Citadel and the Outcasts in Fallout 3. Fallout 4 comes along, OH YEA THE BOS IN THEIR MASSIVE AIRSHIP. Straight tells me my decisions were ignored by ****s like Emil.
Let's start a debate The "normal" brotherhood of steel should've been the outcasts. The Current Outcast brotherhood stands for everything that the BoS from Fallout 1/2 stood. The BoS in 3 accept and willingly protect wastelanders. The original didn't. They only accepted the Vault Dweller because of desparation. I see why being a Vault dweller will maybe increase your chance of joining the BoS but hey, 1% is still a 100th.
That is what's happening with the game anyway. Lyons adapted his goals to help the people in Washington D.C and these soldiers stuck in the past abandoned to start their own chapter of what the BoS should've been.
I love the concept of the Outcasts, and even more so love their armor paint jobs! Thanks to the FO4 Creation Club content, I now always have my companions in Outcast Power Armor in both 3 and 4
I wish the Entirety of BOS would start acting like Lyons. Maxon is kinda going there a little. They go after the institute which are causing harm to people by kidnapping people or letting super mutant loose. And they are pretty nice to the people of the commonwealth compared to the outcasts who are very rude and condescending towards people. Maxon even let’s our character join something the outcasts and most other BoS don’t seems to do. They just need to find a good balance between being protectors and doing their own thing.
With the mod Fallout Wanderer's Edition, which is a very good overhaul for F3, many raider bands had "Fallen Brothers" with them which were basically outcasts who deserted and wen't mercenary for the Raiders. What was cool is that the mod tweaked with the armor statistics and if you fought with an enemy in Power Armor with anything less than 5.56 full auto ammo and/or your weapon skill was below circa 60, the fight with a "Fallen Brother" was always won (if at all) by the skin of your teeth. This made encounters with raiders very interesting, especially in the first half of the game because every group of raiders could have at least one "Fallen Brother" in it. I remember that when I faced one of them in Wheaton's Armory , I had to use all of my mines and grenades to get the dude to a near death state and even then it took a considerable amount of .44 and 5.56 ammo to bring him down. I had a ton of fun with these fights, they were really exciting.
So outcasts left because they didn`t want to secure the area (Washington and outskirts) with technology in it? Super mutants seem like big enough threat to attempts to find tech anywhere. I understand that they REALLY want that old tech, but super mutants already managed to kill some amount of BOS. Going out of relatively well defended area with smaller group just so they can say "I am actually doing what BOS people supposed to do" seems short-sighted. Yes, they have that fort and patrol some other areas, but they don`t have people to secure them. So that tech can fall into anyone`s hands. So they splintered basically because they wanted to stroke their own ego. And no recruiting is just plain stupid. All of them are going to die at some point, so there just going to be some pointless robots left. Very helpful in a mission to secure tech and show those people in the citadel that removing relatively big threat to your operations is not necessary for your continued survival and success of said mission. I think some outcast says elder "gone native" or something similar. No, he isn`t (at least not at the start). He tries to find source of and remove actual threat, while outcasts walk around and stare at tech that they can`t get. And act like assholes to natives they need to get to tech. Then plot happens, threats and okay-ish leaders are removed, so BOS and outcasts reunite to build that dumb blimp and go to somewhat annoy people in the commonwealth. Guess someone at BGS remembered that outcasts were a thing and gave them a conclusion. Undeserved, but they are gone anyway. I played FO3 a long time ago and my memory isn`t good, so I don`t remember much about outcasts and using my understanding of this video as a base.
Man it was funny when me my brother and dad played falliut 3 the first time. I was enclave all the way. Dad was brotherhood and brother was the outcasts. Our rivalry carried into warhammer sessions.
If I was in a life or death situation, it's people like the outcasts I'd want on my side. They turned their backs on all the comfort and safety that came with the group to hold onto what they believed was right all else be damned. Those guys have some dedication.
The BoS isn’t any different. The Outcasts just like the Original BoS, a dying breed. They can’t adapt which is why they’re almost gone. At least Lyons BoS tried to adapt while earning a good reputation with the CW populace.
I actually ran into them immediately upon leaving vault 101 my first playthrough of FO3 (or any fallout game for that matter). I tried attacking them because i thought they were the typical characters in the world
Isn't it ironic that the outcasts refer to Knights and Paladins as "Defender" and "Protector" when they left to avoid defending and protecting those they deemed unworthy?
The Outcasts initially formed to branch off from the direction Elder Lyons was taking the Brotherhood in, but now that the Brotherhood more closely resembles the Outcast's opinion on the wasteland, I wonder if the Outcasts can be reformed again one day under the leadership of someone wanting to break away from the more antagonistic direction of current-day Brotherhood. Perhaps this new group of Outcasts would then more resemble Lyons's vision of the Brotherhood. If anyone would start this approach to the Outcasts, I would think I would want it to be Maximus from the Fallout show.
@@SorceressWitch my man above is trying to say he wants Maximus to create an "Outcast" like group completely opposite from what the Outcasts was in Lyons time. The man is not stating that the Outcast still exist but he's trying to say he wants Maximus to create his own small Splinter Group.

Incredible time of this video, I have recently started a new run on my ps3 fallout 3, and was heading for fort independent just after running into the Outcasts and was like, damn, forgot about them. So as I said great timing.
When I first started playing the game I wasn't familiar with all the systems, glitches, and what not nor was I stickler about finishing the story then the DLC. I did the Anchorage dlc first at some point and got all the Outcast gear I could repaired it, stashed it, and used it except my fatal mistake was wearing around Fort Independence and got my armor confiscated. I was so pissed I restarted my last save that was so long ago because I only used auto save at the time. It's funny now looking back on it one my first interactions with the Outcasts.
You would think that the ones breaking from the goals of the BoS, would have been the ones with the changed paintjob. Never got to interact with them in Fo3. Failed to follow into the base when asked to, and the door got labeld in red.
Oh look, a new video. Sweet! Hey Syn, would you consider doing a challenge run for any of the FO-games? Game and challenge is up to you, as far as I'm concerned. Anything you'd do a voiceover and playthrough for would be (and has been) absolutely golden. Edit: and before anyone says that everything has been done already .. why yes, everything has been done; but not by this smooth-voiced son of a gun. Take care fellow wastelanders
They could do the challenge run where you get 1 strength and have to carry a wood chipper the entire playthrough with a mod that instantly kills you when you become over cumbered
It saddens me that the divide between the Outcasts and East Coast Brotherhood wasn't explored more, and that it was mended offscreen. I think it could have been really interesting in 4 if the Outcasts had lost in the Capital Wastelands and had fled to Boston to reorganise and that's why the rest of the Brotherhood comes chasing after both them and the Institute. But that kind of conflict would have needed imaginative and creative writers.
for some reason when i beat the dlc and opened the vault door, they all decided to kill eachother and tried to kill me lol idk if it was a bug or whatnot but i took what i could get and got the fuck outta there

What is kind of ironic is that if they had kept to their original objective, and looked for lost tech and data-bases.

Love the channel so much synonymous thank you for making these
I understand the outcasts reason for wanting to follow the intended course but the supermutants would directly effect their ability to hunt for more tech.

Not many people speak on the outcast this was nice to see im glad someone remembers them
The outcasts were an interesting group because they were essentially considered one of the bad guys in Fallout 3 since they fought against the BoS, but they are literally following the ways of the brotherhood from Fallout 1 and 2 where they could be considered one of the good guys depending on how you play.

They’d have to be to hold up spiders that big and honestly could play into the game as a resource for weapons and armor crafting.

i love how fallout 3 and nv is still realvent and people are still making content about it
Easily one of the coolest breakaway factions in any piece of media, if only there were books surrounding fallout 3 deepening the lore
Let's start a debate
The "normal" brotherhood of steel should've been the outcasts.
There's also the Midwest Brotherhood in Fallout Tactics
I love the concept of the Outcasts, and even more so love their armor paint jobs! Thanks to the FO4 Creation Club content, I now always have my companions in Outcast Power Armor in both 3 and 4
You get it for free with mods 😂 Also oldschool Power Armors like in the old games.
I always liked the Outcasts simply because their armor looked cool
I been playing Fallout 3 again on my Xbox one and you posted a video on a faction I liked.
Oh shit I remember watching orcadeas video on the gauss rifle back then, the outcasts being part of op anchorage was pretty badass

I like how the Ad Victoriam mod for Fallout 4 puts the Brotherhood's armor black and red as they brought the Outcasts back.

I tried attacking them because i thought they were the typical characters in the world
The Outcasts were always the faithful and right ones. Elder and Sarah Lyons were too blinded by doing the moral thing instead of the right thing.
Isn't it ironic that the outcasts refer to Knights and Paladins as "Defender" and "Protector" when they left to avoid defending and protecting those they deemed unworthy?
I think it refers to defending and protecting technology, rather than people
I also love the outcasts assholish remarks towards you, pretty funny.
Excellent as always...Thanks for the upload!
I like you're idea
Outcasts rejoined the BOS under Maxson. They are no more.
@@SorceressWitch my man above is trying to say he wants Maximus to create an "Outcast" like group completely opposite from what the Outcasts was in Lyons time.
