ACT - Active Cylinder Technology in VW SKODA 1.5 Turbo | 2 Cylinder Mode | Reliability Issues

- Active Cylinder Technology (ACT), also known as Cylinder Deactivation, is a feature in some modern cars that allows the engine to temporarily deactivate or "shut off" specific cylinders under certain driving conditions. The purpose of ACT is to improve fuel efficiency by reducing the amount of fuel consumed during light-load or cruising conditions when all engine cylinders are not necessary for power delivery.
Here's how Active Cylinder Technology typically works:
Cylinder Deactivation: When the vehicle is operating under light-load conditions, such as cruising on a highway or coasting, the engine control unit (ECU) can deactivate specific cylinders. For example, in a four-cylinder engine, it may deactivate two of the cylinders, effectively turning it into a two-cylinder engine.
Valve Operation: To deactivate the cylinders, the engine's intake and exhaust valves for those cylinders are kept closed, preventing fuel and air from entering or exiting them. This action effectively shuts down the deactivated cylinders and prevents any power generation from them.
Seamless Transition: The transition between cylinder activation and deactivation is designed to be seamless and imperceptible to the driver. The engine control unit continuously monitors various parameters such as throttle position, vehicle speed, load demand, and engine temperature to determine when cylinder deactivation is appropriate. The transition is usually accomplished by adjusting fuel injection, valve timing, and ignition timing to maintain smooth operation and minimize vibration.
Reactivation: When the driver demands more power, such as during acceleration or heavy load conditions, the deactivated cylinders are quickly reactivated, and all cylinders resume their normal operation to provide the required power output.
The benefits of Active Cylinder Technology include improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and lower operating costs. By deactivating cylinders when not needed, the engine consumes less fuel, resulting in better mileage. However, it's important to note that the effectiveness of ACT can vary depending on driving conditions and the specific implementation of the technology in different vehicle models.
Many automakers, including Volkswagen, General Motors, Honda, and others, have implemented Active Cylinder Technology in their vehicles to improve fuel economy without compromising performance.

We own a 1.5 manual and i love the car, but I thought you were a fan boy, but man this video made me respect both of you now just awesome
👍🙏
Wow brother awesome explanation of this topic you done really good job
Excellent video Sunder ji. :) As we discussed at Indore, this 1.5L engine is a gem. It can wear so many outfits - it can be so economical and then it can be so powerful. Thanks for the video. :)
Arnab Bhai, so so good to see your comment 👋❤️
@munish ji superb knowledge......👌👌👌
Extraordinary explanation 👍
Nice video sir I enjoyed when I drive my Kushaq in city 2 cylinder
Very informative thanks 🎉
Heartfelt Thanks for your great discussion! Have booked Taigun GT plus! Looking forward to enjoy the safety which is 5 star NCAP with an amazing engine 1.5 TSI EVO with DSG.
❤
12:10 I hope exhaust manifold is common so the exhaust gas from the working cylinder can enter into the idle cylinder chamber which can make carbon deposit in liner as well as valve seat.
Manish ji superb
Eagerly waiting for your video paaji
Thank you both of you
great explanation
Thanks to make a very useful video
Correction. There is really a significant note change in the engine sound. After all engine sound is not just from pistons moving, but from the combustion of fuel. The DSG turns off 2 cylinders at 1400rpm and turns all 4 cylinders back on at 2000rpm.
I have a question though. If the deactivated cylinders are always the same cylinders, wont there be uneven wear over say 5 years or 7 years?
There will be but not as much because cylinder deactivation doesn't even work 95% of the time under ideal driving conditions.
@@anowarsayeed5761 I have a virtus gt, and it works a lot.
There was this issue of uneven cylinder wear in v6 honda accord which had this tech in 2012 known VCM
@@Appppy does it even work for a minute continuously?
@@anowarsayeed5761 depends on your throttle input. If you manage to maintain throttle at less than 10-12%(I'm not 100% sure of this figure, I'll confirm if you want) and RPM between 1400-2000rpm in drive mode it works as long as you drive. Even in sports mode if you maintain rpm above 1400 and be very light on your throttle inputs it works well.
Great Content!! Tuning pe video kab ayegi?
Manish Sir ke explanation ko sunkar to VW group ke engineers bhi sochte honge ki bhai ye to hamara bhi guru hai
Nicely informative video
Thank u for answer
Thanks, guys, I have been searching for this for a long time and found this awesome video. The good insight he has given on this technology. Just one question about the engine firing order, how VW handle that in terms of handling pressure on the crankshaft because of the firing order?
Very informative video. I was going to go for a 1.0 but now definitely going for 1.5 DSG
1.5 manual is phenomenal
No doubt VW-Skoda makes engineered marvel Cars. But since 1.5 TSI Engines are imported & expensive, these Cars are for only those many Indians who can afford to spend atleast ₹2.5 - 3 lacs more against Competition.
Inspite of offering good Cars the sales nos. are declining. Its high time they offer Sub 4 Mts starting from ₹9-10 lacs Cars for big Sales nos. in India. Once a brand VW-Skoda customers, chances are 90% of them will retain the same brand for their bigger & better Cars in future.
Since Polo, Vento & Rapid are discontinued. More than 50% owners have sold their old Cars and bought new VW-Skoda Cars.
Fantastic
Nice information
Sunder deep Ji. Once again a wonderful video and much respect to you and Munish ji. I am looking to buy Virtus automatic. I have a doubt which no one is able to clarify properly. Between the 1.0 and the 1.5 L engine which will give better mileage in city traffic bumper to bumper. What’s the difference in numbers. Hope you can guide me. Thanks.
Sir, we are waiting for the turbo and remap explanation video. I hope you bring that video real soon.
One more thing is that, In German cars post year 1996 they started using fuel cutoff when you are slowing down but in gear. Even if you are braking, if you use the gear to downshift with manual or auto rev matching, the engine keeps rotating but the fuel does not comes in engine. This also helps in Engine braking. The oil pump still runs and all other belt driven mechanical component still run because the wheel is turning and through gear it is rotating camshaft.
Amazing Video and amazing channel. Too vast knowledge and very informative. I am a huge fan and always belive in quality cars. Need to buy Kushaq 1.5 Manual, but i guess Taigun GT Plus with 1.5 Manual is getting launched till November this year. I have time but confused which one to buy as both are sisters but which is better and cheaper in maintenance. Build quality as we say are the same brand, so nothing majorly to change in driving dynamic except Fit and finish and interiors looking more neater. Yet need your expert comments on cheaper and better after sales service. Kushaq 1.5 Manual or Taigun?? Many thanks in Advance Manish Ji and Sunderdeep Ji.
Sunderdeep ji kya Kushaq men code karwake features enable karwana sahi rahega ??? Please advise on this
I think the inlet outlet valves remain closed- two benefits of that- No pumping losses- as the engine does not waste energy in pumping in and out the air, second, the trapped air in the cylinder acts as a spring so there is minimal loss of energy.
I had the Honda Accord V6, which had this similar technology, de activating two or three cylinders when the power demand was less.
Kindly check and advise.
Many thanks.
I was confused between 1.0 or 1.5 ... But after watching this video my mind set is clear!!
Now I definitely will go with 1.5 ❤
Thank you paaji for making such an informative video।।
The comment about carbon deposit was in reference to the engine being a GDI and there's no spray of fuel on the intake valves, in the longer run can the intake valves develop carbon because of PCV and blow-by as they're not being washed by the fuel? My question is not related to ACT but to all the TSI engines. Please discuss this in a video, if possible.
Kindly share your link on DSG box repair and troubleshooting, DQ 200 and skoda slavia .
Paaji, is there any news of having this ACT technology in Kodiaq in near future….? It would be great feature as current mileage is bit low…
Middle class ke log Pia Peltos lete hain 18-19 lakh me 2* rating.. ya phir Karuti & Fundai ki Freeza ya Preta lete hain 16-17 lakh me..Sunroof wali becoz India me na garmi hoti hai na sardi always basant ka masum aur dust ya pollution to India me bilkul nahi hai...

Hi sir, Any idea when localised 1.5 engine will be launched?
This thing was in 1.4 tsi in polo too in Europe
Was this video shot in winters? May end mein ye attire 😅
Can you please talk about dry clutches how reliable they are and how driving style affects them.
Please make a video on imt with munish ji
Will all 4 cylinders have equal life span as there will be a difference in the combustion cycle like the one will remain on during the ACT will they have more varentier then the one which
remain of???
Boss need ur views on remap.. their pros and cons.. pls..
As DSg reliability is of concern, I had rapid diesel At, gear got stuck at 2 4 and 6, and was not shifting to 1 ,3,5 &7. Share your recommendation...pls if you can guide
aap intake and exhaust manifold bhoolgye, wo bhi alag alag hai ya combined hi rhte hai sabhi piston ke.
Was similar technology used by Honda for Accord 2.4L engine?

Sir 2 piston par jyada carbon deposite nhi hoga kya? uneven carbon deposite, uneven valve wear....bas 2 poston heat honge to uneven piston ring wear bhi ho sakta he.....
1 query, if inlet and outlet valves are opene and at same time piston come at the top, it can hit the valves?

We have vento 1.0 tsi 2022 model. It's both o2 sensor got hole within 10000km and we had to replace it. We had to pay Rs 22k as it was not covered in guarantee. We still got no reason why it happened and how to avoid it in future. Please advise.
Really appreciate your knowledge and effort. I watch almost all your videos full.
Premature failure is due to manufacturing defects…
Sir one doubt from layman's perspective..
Let suppose most of the life span, car runs on ACT ie two cylinder, then carbon deposits on running pistons will be more compared to other two pistons.
Does it have any impact on overall compression or on any other aspect
Does it work when the car is idle and aircon is on for long periods?
Act mein same set of pistons off hote h ya different sets??
Do piston jb dry chaleinge to unki life km hogi ya nhi???
Does 2L TSI engine has same technology or only 1.5L have?
Should I wait for Passat or Jetta or go for virtus gt manual???
Kindly help me I’m confused.
Only Volkswagen
Please share
Have you notice in virtus or salvia 1.0 AT while resting hands on gear lever while pressing & releasing brake peddle there’s a minute click feel or noise .. whats that any idea ??
Me too felt that click.. mine is kushaq 1.5 dsg.. I think that is clutch engaging sound..
Sir Ji video on TDI engine with Munish Ji please.
Brother can we get a remap for slavia 1.5 tsi manual in coming days ?
after ages…
Final the video is on deck.
SSA Sunderdeep Ji, You wrote the mileage as 26 kmpl. It's really strange to me that a petrol car can be so efficient. I want to know the RPM of the engine and at which speed, in which gear, you achieve this mileage.
Sunderdeep... I have 1 question for u... So tell me... Kya Skoda Octavia jo BS6 k phase 2 k karan discontinued hui h... Kya in future OCTAVIA fir se aayegi...? R agr ayegi to kb tk ayegi??
Superb ayegi Sir, Octavia globally discontinue bol rahe hain
Sir please make a video on Mahindra new age engines of xuv700 and Scorpio N
Sir make vedio 2.0tdi engine jetta,Passat,Octavia, superb
we have reviewed Passat in detail in the past
@@SunderdeepSingh sir I mean in depth talk on vag group 2.0 tdi engine with this sir about reliability of 2.0tdi engine, and 6speed dsg
Kya yeh course drive PE kaam karega
When will VW launch sub 4 m Hatchback or Mini SUV
Normally, the firing order for a 4 cylinder is 4132. These firing orders are all executed within one cycle of the piston (during any stroke of a cylinder, atleast one of the 4 cylinders is firing).
But in ACT, one cylinder fires while the other is taking the inlet (180 degree phase diff, while in the crankshaft, their movement is only 90 degree apart). And ACT can't change the phase difference.
So how does the engine still remain balanced?
About carbon deposition- These engines are I think direct and indirectly injected. This was introduced in the EA888 engines to get rid of the carbon deposition problems. I still think that the cylinder valves are closed so there in no question of excess carbon deposition.
Please let me know whether ACT is available in Manual versions also aur in automatic only???
It is available on all 1.5 lts engine options...whether MT or Auto transmission
So on highways, this 1.5L engine would be more efficient than the 1L 3 cylinder engine? In City conditions, 1L engine would be more efficient? Please clarify this.
1L will be more efficient
In Highway 1l.will be efficient. In city use 3 cylinder will not be economical. 1.5 l as they have 2 cylinder deactivation system it ll have an edge over 1l engine in city use bumper to bumper.
But both engines must be lightly Handled in city use..or else both ll drink more fuel
When four cylinders is giving power and when switching to two cylinders mode if fuel is not increased in active cylinder will not the power will get half?
Obviously. But the point of this technology is to deliver fuel economy. The sensors will not activate ACT if you are revving hard as ECU knows driver wants to have fun
What about power balance in engine if power is not balanced in engine it will induce stress on the crankshaft hence axial vibration will increase. How VW managed crankshaft vibration and stress.
Hii sunderdeep ji and munish ji
I had a query
Why hasnt vw group given act tech in their bigger displacement engine the 2.0 tsi if the sole reason for which its provided is to improve the fuel efficiency?
Those cars are above 1700 kgs and are AWD so perfect sync might not be possible.
2.0 tsi engines are for higher end costly cars e.g. Tiguan (37 +laks). These cars are not for fuel efficiency but for power and enthusiasm..
Paaji - It has bigger displacement advantage right , Any specific reason for not providing it in 2.0Tsi, As it's operates only when there is no load at all
@@kars_facts rather the tiguan kodiaq superb and octavia's 2.0 tsi is the gen 3b motor which is a higher compression motor tuned for decent efficiency and power
Volkswagen is not made for most of the Indian consumers. Daksh has well pointed out in various drawbacks of owning German products. They make good cars but not for everyone.
True, they ask for little extra care
It's not only about extra care, for eg vag 2.0 strategy is failure beyond tier 2 City, only showroom in entire North East in Guwahati stands closed. Five years back they left n re-opened n now closed again, what a farce marketing strategy.. how can people take them in confidence if showroom n service is non existent
All questions are fulfilled related reliability and technical but i have one more question is That.what if Two cylinder2-3 cut off does it put more pressure or extra load on 1-4 working cylinders ??
As far as I know, Volkswagen is not trying to take out the same amount of power from 2 cylinders as it is doing with 4 cylinders. When the ecu engages 2 cylinder mode it judges a variety of factors to ensure that only that amount of power is being demanded by the driver of the car. The cylinders would have had increased load if volkswagen would have been trying to get more power from the activated cylinders to compensate for the deactivated cylinders.
Hope this helps !!!
@@aryaman1906 This is last What about AC
Sir,2nd part plz battery wala issue with DSG
Sir,
If engine 1500 rpm pe kaam kar raha hai at speed of 100 tab samjho aapke 2 cylinders band kar diye toh rpm toh raise hona hi hai na kyunki 2 cylinders pe load jyada ayega.
Don't these 2 stopped pistons adding dead weight to overall engine peformance.
Sir, What about uneven carbon build up ?
Car built is too light compared to the previous built and service costs are high due to labour. Also people say that spare part support for older model is poor. So no practical person can really enjoy having a high quality car over 10-15 years from now onwards.
The number one priority always is cheap maintenance.
Build light? These cars are heavier than Rapid Vento, scored 5 in crash tests
@@SunderdeepSingh Sir, people here also complain about spare parts. Please make a video on that. How can I buy an old Passat as I had a horrible experience earlier with Skoda Octavia service.
New cars have higher plastic components.
What is the life of 1.5 MT Engine .. How many kilometers could it be run with very well maintenance
I'm also curious!😊
Sunder ji... Agar 4 me se 2 cylinder off ho sakte hai... To 3 me se 1 cylinder off ho sakta hai kay?
No Bhai
bhai ab to munishji ko video me dekhte hai na to pura video dekhne se pehle hi like kar dete hai....pata hai ki munishji aaye hai to koi baat tojarur leke aaye honge
Aabhaar 🙏
There will be timer to switch between 1st 2-cylinder cut-off to another set of 2-cylinder. So wear and tear will be maintained uniformly in all cylinders. This technology is purely for fuel economy and reduce exhaust emissions.
Sir 2 questions:
1.Agar ACT activate h aur instant power chahiye to kaise ACT deactivate hota h?
2.Aur 2 cylinders ko zyada power nhi lg rhi hogi un 2 deactivated cylinders ko bhi drive krne me?
It is very smart, when you push, it gets deactivated automatically and actually activates after observing the driving style. We cannot manually control it.
