  • Fascinating ballad, inspired to the prophetic Orwell. Dark and ghostly atmosphere, decadent, submerged into the "nothing/useless", dominated by omnipresent guardians. Again Bowie stands out for expressive power and his free way to do Rock. Taken from the self-titled album that was among the most controversial, but re-evaluated over time.

Having seen him over 35 times in concert, he never failed to amaze me. I remember seeing the Diamond Dogs tour back in 1974...fantastic

Wow 35 times! I regret being just an average fan while he was alive. He lives in my campervan with me now..

Thanks dearest, intelligent, important underscoring! Generally we're witnessing a show that is final result: to get it many elements may have interacted for optimization. Colour is frequency, as well as sound/wave: codes, communication languages, for conveying symbolically thought.
DB, Sound & Vision Master, has always taken care of every aspect of his shows, professionally and lovingly.
The bright colours could symbolize an alternative path. Beyond gloomy "rich dogs"...

The "hunger city", weak and resigned, would take a different life, but is unable to react; subjugated completely from the control of power, it tries to survive in the remaining time through some hallucinated attempts to escape.
The picture is dark, extreme and disturbing, an alarm on the indifference ... made more "slight and gentle", in rock-time. Great Bowie.
    Thank you, dear Susan.

Oh, mille grazie Nicole !

I totally agree and think that it's a special liking, unanimous. Bowie, elusive genius without prejudices, unpredictable, versatile and eclectic, at that time was for the umpteenth time in a turning point (for me, extraordinary) after the experience with NIN/Reznor: sonority drum'n'bass, breakbeat, industrial... repertoire mainly portraied by sense of "the unknown", so dear to David... magic touches, sometimes in baritone voice, but always warm.
    Thank you so much Petzi.

Best live version of this great song, but David did mix up the lyrics, " Year of the scavenger season of the bitch" is the ending verse , oh we still love this performance.
