    I don't think the newer Gen16 uses the mics under the bell anymore. It's more of a frequency piezo. The older silver ones uses the mics but zildjian changed how it picks up the sound because when they had zildjian endorsers play a live show with the mics, the sound tech would get interference with the mics. So they changed it to being a piezo where it can pick up all the frequencies of the cymbals.

      It's a cool concept but not fully developed. Knowing that it's Zildjian, give it a couple more years for them to find the perfect combination of sound quality and build quality.

      If they changed it to a piezo on the new bronze ones does that mean you can now plug them into a drum module for triggering?

    I use the L80's with my practice setup, which just consists of Aquarian Super Pads on all the drums. The L80's have been awesome (especially when teaching lessons for hours - me and my students don't have to go deaf). I really like the super pads, but I've been toying with the idea of trying to convert to an electronic setup. Like you mentioned, I've seen a lot of guys miking up the cymbals, then triggering Remo Silent Strokes. I can definitely second that the Zildjian low volumes are incredible. They're super quiet for practicing in an apartment, and mine have held up well for the 9 months I've had them so far. Very high quality.

      I know what you mean. When I go from electric to acoustic the acoustic sounds so freaking loud! And they feel huge despite being only a 14 12 14 20 set-up compared to my td10 which has lsrge toms for electric.

      Did you ever get around to triggering or mic'ing your L80s? I was considering triggering them, but mic'ing them seems like an easier solution as I can't seem to find a very cost effective solution for triggering them.

    You and I emailed each other recently regarding Laurin drums, and how interesting that you're covering this topic so soon after! I bought a set about two months ago. I'm also an over the road truckdriver, and yes when the engine shuts down the seats fold forward and out pops the e-kit! These cymbals pair well I believe, especially when triggered. I like that acoustic feel, and a major benefit is when I'm unplugged and simply target practicing they do well to break up the monotone thuds of electronic pads. Very much a fan of these!

    Hey Justin! Does the Simmons Piezo work well with cymbals? I would def try this... i was extremely skeptical but saw a lot of good reviews so I bought the set... then was impressed enough to add the ride and the splash they make. From an acoustic drumming perspective, and from somebody who grew up in apartments, my only complaint about the L80 set is that it wasn’t invented 25 years ago. I would note that the ride and hihats do emit a weird high frequency, particularly when you close the hats. But I bought them for volume control, not sound quality.

    65Drums,
    My experience with the Gen16-
    I use these with my yamaha. there are things I like about them and things I don't. I bought the AE kit (silver cymbals), a basic package consisting of 13" HH, 16" crash, 18" crash/ride, module unit, cables, and three mics. a note on the mics... I got the late model piezos, which connect directly into the module, where as the earlier mics did not. this is a much better setup as long as you can get over the outrageous price for one of these mics (around 80 bucks). I don't much care for the electronic sounds especially the ones for the hi-hats. evidently Zildjian has software that you can download to get more, better, and upgraded sounds, but I haven't tried it. The AE cymbols aren't bad but they do have a chinsie metallic sound to them. I eventually upgraded to a 14" HH set in bronze and they sound a little better acoustically. the electronic sounds are the same. I also got an L80 crash cymbol which as you said, doesn't look as good, but sounds decent and is pretty quiet. you can also hook up the zildjian mics and run it through the module the same as the gen16 cymbols. sounds a bit different.
    Honestly, I prefer the Gen16 cymbols, both bronze and L80 series to be better when played acoustically. I like to play along with drum song backing tracks and it just feels finer and sounds better when they are played without being plugged in... (the rest of my set is plugged in however) and these are actually fairly quiet and lots of fun to play and practice with. the great thing is you can play it like a real one... perfect for a beginner that wants to play inside the house on non-pad cymbols, sounding acoustically, but without being real loud. Personally, what I want to do is upgrade to all bronze or L80 cymbals and use the aftermarket piezo mics to hook up to the drum module, so I can have better crash/HH sounds, while being able to play with real cymbols. all in all I think its a pretty good set, however waaaay over priced. just a cymbol on its own is 250 bucks. for the price that they charge, I think Zildjian could have done a much better job and had more features and a better sound. another thing they could've done is on the module... it only has 5 banks for 5 cymbals. thats all you get. so if one wants to get all the zildjian Gen16 cymbals for their set, they won't be able to hook all of those in at one time. They could have provided more banks for more cymbals. Nonetheless, I am keeping mine and am going to do small upgrades here and there. My advice to anyone who wants to get these is this: don't pay the outrageous prices. get it used or buy the pieces seperately. and if you just want the silent acoustic sounds, don't waste your money on the module and mics and cables. Hope this helps some folks.

    I play with the bronze set up and I really like the sound. It takes a minute and you have to put some effort into learning how to tweak it but once you figure it out it sounds really good. I would recommend the 18in crashes, my problem with the ride is that it has a tendency to sound pingy and the bell is a little funky

    I used the whole gen16, l80, and silentstroke setup for a couple years before switching to a full volume setup, but the problem for me is they won't stop cracking. I've had to send each of these cymbals back to zildjian to be replaced. That being said, they certainly feel nicer than rubber pads, and I might have to look into getting the triggers for them.

    Have used Gen 16’s for awhile now with and without gen 16 sound module. And definitely prefer to just use the cymbals with overhead mics as the mics pick up the natural sound which is a lot better in my opinion.
    Have just used the set up for a couple of gigs and the cymbals sound good going through a decent P.A system.
    The only negatives would be that because of all the holes the cymbals are pretty easy to break/crack.
    Have been recommended Agean Cymbals as they seem to be thicker, better quality metal and sound better.

    Do you have to use the zildjian drum module or can I connect straight into my drum module? I’m thinking of getting a Roland td-30 and thought the drum sounds in that would be better than the zildjian module? Or would you steer clear totally!? They’re a lot of money, but look great

    I have a set of the L80s added a L80 china and bigger ride. I am most impressed at the ride and hi hats. I sometimes use one of the hi hats as a bottom with my A custom on top. Im torn on weather to sell them or keep them around. It is the mesh heads i can't get use to. I wanted a quiet practice set but though i have other homes around me I live in the country and I own not rent so why not practice what i play. It's not like anyone is going to evict me or can do anything about it as long as im respectful of the time of day.

    Hey Justin, I hope you can advise. I am trying to run a Roland TD 11 into a Zildjian Gen 16 DCP I have these communicating fine through my computer listening through head phones. What I want to do is use Superior Drummer 2.0 and record the drums into my DAW. I'm using Reaper ver. 6.49. Can't get anything to sound in the DAW. My question is how do I need to connect all this together? I've searched UA-cam, read all manuals but I can't make heads or tales of what they are talking about. So, if you could simplify and direct me I would so appreciate it! Thanks for your time! Rob

    I just bought the L80 set about 2 months ago. I paired them with a Gretsch Catalina kit with the Pearl mesh heads. I don't have any drum triggers/module though, I just have them for a quiet practice setup. The L80's have a really nice sound and work perfectly for just quiet practicing that only I can hear while giving me the feel of playing behind a real kit. I could definitely see them being used for electronic kits though, but like you said, it would be hard to get 2 or 3 zones on them.

    The L80 also has a coating applied to it in order to offer extra dampening. The first line of Gen16 were nickel silver, instead of bronze. Also, the Gen16 is less of a electronic cymbal and more a "modelling" cymbal instead. Zildjian also said they'd be selling those as units based on a UA-cam review of the L80.

    Hey man I was curious if you know anything about the digital vault they have for these things? They have tons of samples that sound great using the gen16's on the zildjian site. I think it runs on a program called "BFD", which I'm pretty sure runs mostly off of a new pick up/piezo that actua in one of the holes on the cymbal. I haven't made sense of myself, but none the less it seems like the answer to the cheesy sounds of the gen16's. I'd love to see a review/ any info in reguards to this add on... I'm thinking/ hoping that just like anything expensive, it's never REALLY good until you get the add ons. (An Xbox for example, sucks by itself. Generally it comes with horrible games and isn't actually any fun until you buy the games you want for it, a subscription to Xbox live, better internet service because lagging sucks etc...) anyways, I think it would be worth looking into checking this out and maybe doing a video on it. Check out those samples, I'll think it'll suprise you!

    I bought a pair of 14" L80 hats and while I like the feel compared to the VH-11 they lack the volume I am looking for. You said you played the bronze Gen 16 cymbals so I have a question to ask, but first a side note. I am not really looking to by the triggers to hook up to my module or anything. I have been using my full acoustic cymbal setup with my TD-30 kit. I use 2 condenser microphones overhead to blend them with the mix of the kit in the PA system. The small problem I am running into is that the other musicians in the group are being blasted with all that natural and piercing cymbal volume on stage. Now for the question. In your opinion do the Gen 16 line of cymbals have a better quality and volume of sound that I could still use my condenser microphones for out front and get what I need for volume on stage. This question is also assuming that you have heard them without their factory pickups being used.

    I have a full set of Bronze Gen 16's paired with my TD-15. It took a lot of tweaking to get the cymbals to sound like I want them to. I have read a lot of negative comments about the preset sounds and I have to agree that a lot of them are pretty bad, but you can attain some pretty decent sounds with some trial and error. The feel great, far better than rubber pads although I use a mix of the Gen 16's and some Roland cymbals to get different sounds for different kit set-ups. The TD-15 ability to expand is pretty limited so
    by freeing up some triggers I was able to get more toms. and truly customize my kit.

    Silly me bought the original alloy Gen16s. You are right on the money. They were awful sounding cymbals. Truly dreadful high pitched rubbish.. But that was not the worst of it.
    Having those little microphones on each reeked havoc in my fold back. The feedback was so bad there we NO volume I could have them in my fold back without them feeding back.
    I noticed that later they did the 'direct source' (or whatever it was called) microphones that only activated when the cymbal it was attached to was being played. That would have helped but I would have been stuck with those cymbals. You can't polish the proverbial.

    Question:
    I am possession of Alesis Surge cymbal set (hihat/ride/crash) and have 2 times low80 the Zildjian cymbal-set, now comes the big question to you: what happens if I have this set to the zildjian cymbal-DCP digital cymbal Processor there on connecting,
    How does it work well?
    or how does it work 100% well?
    I seem to be crazy, to the Zildjian cymbals-with all my property, the entire complete Gene 16 to buy, for 1239,-euro.
    Snap you get what I mean?.........
    Or maybe I can only, the DCP-buy module, and that connecting with the Zildjian pick up source on existing Zildjian low 80 mn.
    And how does it work with the Hi-Hat-cymbals? (open/half/closed) 100% ....

      I've never heard this question before. I don't think it would be worth it honestly. The Gen 16 Mic set just amplifies the sound of the the cymbal its placed under. The Gen 16s were designed to pair with them. The alesis Surge cymbals just have a dull click sound when you hit them. So the Gen16 mic wouldn't make it sound very good. But if you end up buying them, let me know how they work together :)

      Hi Justin,
      I mean actually something else:
      summarized for possible connections ... ... and that ' without using mic ' on the Zildjian's-DCP module;
      example:
      version-1;
      the Alesis Surge cymbals > connect > jack-plug/cable > connection on the DigiCymProcessor module; (Zildjian's DCP)
      or example,
      version-2;
      The Zildjian cymbals low80 > connect > Zildjian-pickup (direct source)jack-plug >on the Zildjian-DCP.
      question:
      It works 100%? These connect, and that without the use of DCP-Zildjian-mic
      And what happened on this connection? with the sound from the DCP?
      reaction please.......thnx Justin

    Have you heard of anyone dampening and triggering their real acoustic cymbals? Mainly to cut costs, im in a position where I have everything but the triggers so if i can save money in not buying L80's or Gen16's that would be awesome. Thanks.

    gear4music is selling a very similiar product slightly cheaper. Might even be the exact same product. (For European shoppers)

      Hektor Savage have you tried the gears4music copies? If so how are they and can you compare them to Zildjian?

    Hey Justin, you forgot the WHD cymbals. I put my own triggers on them and they work great.

      They aren't sold in america. And I'm pretty sure they are copies of Zildjians design.

    I played on Magnatrack Drum triggers at NAMM. They were awesome. Dual Zone triggers. They are magnetic and you attach them directly to your actual drum head and cymbal. Picked up ghost notes great and had amazing dynamics. You could make a drum kit out of cans if you wanted. Check them out! Www.magnatrack.com

      I've been talking to the founder Steve for the past year or so. An incredible amount of work went into those things. I'm thinking about picking some up.

      First, you stated no other cymbal manufacturer is making anything like this but that is wrong, at least one other manufacturer has a similar cymbal product (Sabian quiet tone). Hundreds of holes? Try thousands!
