- Hey drummers, let's take a look at two great low-volume solutions for your drum kit: Zildjian's L80 low-volume cymbals, and Remo's Silentstroke drumheads. Between these cymbals and drumheads, you can drastically reduce the volume of your drum set for practice or intimate performance spaces.
Zildjian L80 low-volume cymbals sound like Zildjian cymbals, just much quieter. The key is the perforation pattern, which reduces volume while maintaining the tone and feel of real cymbals.
Remo's Silentstroke drumheads serve a similar purpose for your drums. These mesh heads maintain much of the feel of normal drumheads, so you can practice rudiments at a much lower volume while maintaining the response you're accustomed to.
These are great practice solutions, and the cymbals in particular are suitable for performance if you find yourself playing in a small, intimate setting that would normally become overwhelmed with full-volume cymbals. I bought a pearl roadshow jr for my son and I figure I could learn on it since I already play guitar and bass. It took me like 5 seconds to realize I needed low volume cymbals and heads. Excited to get my silent strokes and L 80’s!

These are the best drums I am looking for.
I tried to increase the volume on my computer 3 times throughout the video whenever the drums were being played, only to find out they were at 100% already. I'm buying a set of these!
These are much louder in person. Id recommend checking out 'Kevin Nazario's video before purchasing them. That video has a more realistic sound level

A tip for people who want their drums to be a little louder.
Stick a piece of duck tape or painters tape on the mesh head. You will get more tone out of it and it will get a little louder.
I think the way it works is, the mesh heads allow allot of air trough the mesh. So if you allow less air to go trough it will get louder.
I played some of these and they are great.

I could not play for years because playing drums in my apartment was just too loud now I have a chance at playing again nothing worst than having the desire to play but never being able to play ..... until now.

Probably the advent of these cheaply made (crappy!) Alesis and Simmons electronic drum kits that are selling like mad made the head honchos at Zildjian and Sabian realize that they better invent a way for acoustic drum set players to practice at home or they might ditch their acoustic drums and cymbals and go electric. I nearly made that mistake too. But, hell, no! Now I can even buy these low-volume cymbals used from Craigslist and Guitar Center and play my drum set in my apartment. A friend just gave me some old Zildjian cymbals for live playing...
I was getting ready to order a set of V Drums because I'm moving from a single family basement drum room to a townhome. I didn't even know that Silent Stroke drum heads existed. Has me totally rethinking what I will play in my townhome!
I was in exactly the same position. I was about to drop a couple of grand on a Ekit until I learned about these. Can’t wait for my drum kit and mesh heads to arrive.

Additionally, the Gen 16s or the L80s work well as stackers, if you're into that sort of thing.

this is a great practice idea. some yamaha thr guitar amps and you can practice for hours without ringing ears and all the head fatigue
These are good if you don't like or don't already have an electronic kit and you need to practice. But if you do have a decent electronic kit you might get bored of the low volume set up very quickly. Many electronic kits already have 2 (new Roland even has 3) ply mesh heads for a more realistic feel. My electronic kit set up mirrors my acoustic kit set up and I don't have any issues with the transition between the two. I've used the Gen Cymbals and they have the edge over 'electronic' cymbals in terms of natural feel (but not sound). The low volume set up is very practical but IMHO a good electronic kit meets that practicality with so much more options.
Someone should be speaking while the drummer is playing for a better comparison. It's hard to tell the change of volume in a video like this.

I'm thinking between getting meinl cymbals and mutes or l80 and remo silentstrokes. I'm more on the l80 side now but I don't think I'll be able to afford it. Guess time will tell.
duuuudddeee - i wish i hadnt seen your video about gen16 a few months ago - you sold me and i bought the hi hat 13" and it's too loud, and also the same price as the whole pack of these :( are the gen16 louder?

So this setup would be good for a small jam room? We try not to kill each other with volume in the small bedroom but you have to be able to play over my drums, which ends up being super loud for everyone. This seems like a perfect setup for me.
Would this setup work well for someone that has severe hearing loss, and wants to jam along with music (CD boombox or isolating headphones)? Looking to protect what little hearing i have left but still jam along with music! Thanks.

It is pretty quiet, but if in an apartment, you will bother your downstairs neighbors. I have an electric kit and it bothers them. My suggestion is communicating with your neighbors about the times you can practice, I don't play drums past 8

This is such an amazing solution. Can't wait to try it out. I do have my doubts with the volume displayed in this video though. There's not a single yardstick to measure the sound by. The drummer even waits for the drums to ring out and chokes the cymbals before proceeding to talk. Shouldn't be necessary, right?
I noticed when he said you can bring your volume down from this- and was beating the hell out of them to try and make them as loud as possible. Then played the others normally.🤣

Why the hell didn't they make these cymbals shiny like regular cymbals are? The dull finish of them doesn't look so good and is somewhat of a disappointment. Also, what was that lower hat you were using? I will likely use a Sabian B8 as my lower if it is not too loud. How does the bottom L80 hat sound as a 14" crash cymbal up on a stand? Are the L80 upper and lower hats identical, thus interchangable, or are they marked bottom and top?
+David James I think the main reason is because these are made exclusively to practice... The Gen16 are Shiny and made of bronze... so they are a little bit louder... but you can still practice with those. L80 have a different alloy, and they seem not to have lathing... I'm sure this help the cymbals to be quiter. I actually play Paiste Cymbals, but since I live in an apartment, I use these L80 Cymbals to practice... even at midnight, and no neighboor had complained yet.
The cymbals are not marked with sizes or "top/bottom" but you can tell by the sizes what type of cymbal it is.

I wanted to buy the roland TD-17KVX because I can only pratice at night. But then I found out this bundle. Which one is quieter?
If I buy this bundle, with the money left I'd buy the benny greb cymbal pack.
So it is like:
ROLAND TD-17KVX vs Zildjian L80/ Remo silentstoke and Benny Greb cymbal pack
What would you choose?
I would go with the Roland TD-17KVX for playing at night time
The difference is you can play loud in your headphones with the electric kit.... this one can’t be plugged into over ears... if go with the electric kit if it’s just for you to play, these if you want to practice on and feel a real acoustic kit
I dunno these seem almost too quiet. You say it's about 80% less. It might work better to be about 50% volume. Maybe I need to try it out in person.
I know this comment is 2 years old, but maybe it will help others out.
You can stick a big piece of painters or ducktape on the mesh heads and it will make it louder and give you more tone. if you don't want to see the tape you can stick it on the inside of the head.
Does anybody think that using silentstroke heads as resonant heads would give better tone than using them as batter heads?

+Bossness Productions Yes nice idea ! I tried only batter heads (no reso at all) some times ago, I remember it was still pretty loud, but it worth a try :)
+Bossness Productions Another thing you can do is put a little bit of duct tape on the impact point of the mesh head (like we would do with a batter patch for kick), it produces lot more attack and a bit more volume : we gain in sound quality and can still play low volume
+Philippe Phil I just got some and I took your advice with the duct tape. The toms and even the snare sound a lot better. Also, using the silentstrokes as resonant heads made no noticable difference from playing normal drums.
Soooo, what's the difference between the L80's and the Gen16's?
Scarlet Hysteria Gen16's are electric cymbals (ie. They come with a module and work like electric drums) and quiet cymbals. L80's are just quiet cymbals.
umm.. why did the volume of the kick and snare drop as well?? click between 2:27 and 2:51
3:34 also sounds like the gain gets pulled down just before you hit the cymbal and go back up after

+Kyle Heslin i am doing it at the Moment on my tama kit and it does not Sound that terrible it is different in a way but in my opinion it is not that bad but way quiter the bass frequency is almost gone

remo silent stroke heads DO NOT feel like your kit with regular heads! you might as well play on a roland mesh head electronic kit. keep it real.
Want low-volume cymbals? Just play a gig at any local venue, and the house sound guy will mic the kick and the snare and nothing else. Trust me..... you'll never hear the cymbals at all.
They are ok I like my drums to be loud but its ok for people to blare pop and this new age garbage in cars but it's a shame for my drums if my drums are not welcome I'm not either

Fake. Notice he mutes the cymbals before resuming talking. That is so the mic level can be adjusted up for when he talks and down when he plays the quiet cymbals. I can tell easily this is fake. Downvoted.

Fake. I have them and I know they are about the same volume as when someone talks normally. Notice how he never talks while he is playing and he makes sure the cymbals are muted fully before he resumes talking. This guy is being deceptive and I busted him!
In every video mutes his cymbals before talking. I feel like what you hearing is that they mute his chest mic when he plays so you don't hear rustling. You hear the room mic when he plays and the chest mic when he talks.
I own L80s and know that they are about as loud as someone talking so his video is misleading/deceptive as to the true volume of the cymbals. To be more accurate, he should just have 1 overhead mic and just talk and play thru that and also talk and play at the same time so we can get a better feel for the volume ratio of the 2.
That's why it is deceptive, but also the room mic sounds way turned down. Again, those cymbals and heads are about the same volume as a person talking normally. In fact, a rim shot on the snare with a silent stroke head is actually louder than a person talking. Possibly crashing a pair of L80 18 inchers at the same time might be louder that a person talking too.
