sarah calling brittany so smart & brittany saying “tysm for saying that” just warmed my heart 🥹♥︎ also brittany’s bloodcurdling scream at the dancing baby just sent me
fr their interactions always come off as so genuine, i love them
I’m stealing that compliment “you’re so smart your bloodline should continue” 😂
fr when they compliment each other it melts my heart a lil
exactly i love how they affirm and allow each other to be themselves its a big reason i watch
PLEASE do an episode on mobile ads. Those Garden Scapes ads kill me 🤣🤣🤣
omg yes!!! I cant help but watch through the whole ad
And the POV games. Some of them are so wild
those are WILD
Yes! Project Makeover… looks dumb af, which is hilarious
i downloaded home scapes cuz of the ads and its not even the actual game lol its like some candy crush shit almost
"Life imitates fart."
"And I fart. Hot. Hot and up the front." BRITTANY
😂😂😂😂
Been so used to Brittany being on the left and Sarah on the right 😂
Literally came to comment this! I knew something was off but didn’t realize till I was like 15 minutes in lmaoooo
this feels like two miss frizzles taking us on the magic school bus to meme town. great episode
Carlooooooos!
Patiently foaming at the mouth for stan twitter episode
manifesting this
i want it but oh god LMFAO
so brittany knows the history of memes but couldn't tell me how the solar system works
Isn’t that the norm now
You'd be surprised how many of us were patiently waiting for the meme episode 😁
fr, I was refreshing my UA-cam because I wanted to watch, not listen on Spotify 😂 we love you two
I feel like it’s their episode cuz they literally both Brit and Sarah have been memes in some form or another 😂😂
@@bellalulu02 LOL I do exactly the same!!!
all in favor say aye
i’m 19 but i personally relate to what Brittany said, i grew up playing outside but i did end up on the internet at a young age still and got addicted
i’m 15 but i also grew up that way, i think i just got lucky with older parents
Dude I'm 16 and feel the same
I feel like the transition from "playing outside" (idk how else to word that) to having the internet at your immediate disposal for Gen Zers is like from 4-11 years old. I didn't really get access to the internet until I was like 7 or 8(?) and even then I didnt have my own device until I was a few years older (im 18 now).
I see the change in Gen alpha. my younger sister who is a Gen Z/alpha cusp had the internet since she was 3. if I look at kids 4-11 now, theyve had it in their hands since 1 at the youngest (hopefully).
Medical professional here 🙋♀️ all STDs are now referred to as STIs because it reduces the stigma around them and because we have many ways of curing/managing most STIs now whereas the word "disease" is often associated with a fatal, life-long condition, which is not typical of most STIs nowadays.
that’s cool thank you
Question: for the ones that are not curable yet, like AIDS or Herpes, are they still called STDs?
@Lincoln B good question! So we still refer to those as infections as well. Reason being, people are more likely to seek medical care if they think there's a treatment for what they have, instead of feeling like it's a hopeless disease that nothing can be done about. For example, in patients with HIV, seeking care early can prevent progression to AIDS, prevent spread to others, and profoundlyimprove quality of life. So while there aren't cures for these conditions yet, there are treatments that can slow progression and stop spread of the infection
@@amandaa1105 That makes a lot of sense! Thanks!

My favorite meme to ever come from the Internet was the Shaggy from Scooby Doo is a god, only using 1% of his power IT WAS SO RANDOM BUT SO FUNNY
THAT SHIT MADE ME PISS MY PANTS
Wow I haven’t thought about that in so long, good times
"is venereal disease an sti or an std?"
"i would have to go back to the foundation that... i don't know what venereal means"
brittany’s art history knowledge is so refreshing tbh bc that’s a huge interest of mine and seeing others get so stoked abt it brings me so much joy
I studied it in my snr yr in high school & I've never utilised that info much at all b4 brittany
Anyone else listen to the Spotify version and then watch it a few hours later cus ur memory is so bad so it’s like watching a new episode all over again? Lmao same
honestly! this podcast is the most rewatchable I have ever seen lmao
i very often rewatch and re-listen to earlier podcast episodes and i’m laughing and crying every time like i’ve never seen it before😂😭 that’s how you know this podcast is too good🤣
Its like a close reading i catch so many more jokes the second time around
I did this for a couple months straight and ended up being in the 0.1% of the listeners in Spotify 😭😭😭 My minutes listening to this is insane
Brittany I love you but as an art history minor I HIGHLY recommend looking up mark Rothko’s paintings and his back story. He had survivals guilt for living in the US as a Jewish man and escaped being imprisoned during WW2 and so he paints about that but through color and emotions. High highly recommend looking him up with peace and love
☮️💙 this a serious message
I like the way this podcast is set up!! Sitting closer feels more conversational and cozy if that makes sense. I liked the flow of this ep and the calm background compared to the usual background
For every hour Brittany’s meme folder isn’t released I will shed one tear. Brittany, please don’t make me suffer
I screamed at Brittany’s nana discovering the word “fly” 💀
I came for the laughs and left with surprisingly insightful comments about memes and art history. Brittany kills it with her passion for fART.
Brittany being so open about fanfiction, being a fan girl, and just all of the things that came up with growing up in the early 2000s in the pod has made me feel so much less alone after being bullied while growing up. She makes me feel less shame about the things I love and I love her and Sarah so much you two are my people.
I actually love this setup, so much more visually intimate and I love how you guys are centered in frame. I would love a setup like this again!
SAME except I can’t read anything on the TV screen
Since it’s Halloween I was low key hoping for an episode about how the scream mask has become a hottie symbol on tiktok and how horror has morphed with thirst traps and such, but this is good too! I’ll take what I can get
yes let’s talk ab white peoples obsession with serial killers
Their momentary uncontrollable laughter at “Dr Dick Dockins” is impeccable
Brittany repeatedly saying "HEY GOOGLE!!" made my Google home mini go off in my bedroom AND made the one in my living room downstairs go off through a CLOSED door and several walls 😂
loving the very direct and intimate eye contact
Ikr I looked over and Sarah was staring straight into my soul
We can’t forget about the period of the internet where people would just comment a bunch of fairy emojis
How fast Sarah goes from laughing to a straight face is killing me. Lmao. Who hurt you? But also same. 🤣🤣
Yes Art History - Brittany can you bring back fart history on your channel?
she has a new ep up now
48:00 In regards to what Brittany said about Gen Z and Gen Alpha girls feeling to grow up fast; Absolutely true, even as an older member of Gen Z. My teenhood was spent with vine and instagram (pre tiktok) which so deeply effect the self worth and self esteem of the myself and the girls around me. It created such a self loathing and sad environment to grow up in. The immense pressure we felt to be beautiful and womanly and fit in rather than discover ourselves and what we want breaks my heart to look back on.
Sarah @8:40 holding the mic and staring into the camera like a child sent me
As someone who is 36 and a former practicing physician I have always been online since I put my first computer together at 7. I love memes and internet culture. Only issue is I have no kids (by choice) to know what's popular, a very busy work schedule (I just retired due to cancer, yes waah wah) and all my irl friends having lives w kids having 0 idea what I'm referencing. It's not exactly easy to stay in the zeitgeist of popular perpetually online humor and hanging out w 20 somethings makes me feel like "hello fellows kids". (I don't think I'm cringe necessarily just it can't feel that way as an older adult hanging out w 20 yr Olds.)
Tiktok shortens the gap but as a Millennial who grew up being admonished for my generation (I used to love telling older patients I'm a Millennial and watching them be scared as if I didn't do 8 years of uni) to being a Boomer. Now I'm called a 40 something loser trying to fit in with Gen Z despite the fact that unless they knew my age they wouldn't notice anything and I'm just looking to laugh at some memes.
It's the same catch 22 as if I joke (I no longer work at the moment but IF I did I wouldn't talk like this at work bte) and talk with slang and online humor most people look at me and say "You really have a doctorate? You don't sound like a doctor." As if I'm supposed to be a caricature of an old time 1950s doctor only speaking in Jargon even outside of work.
You’re here so you’re onto it. You’re also still young
You’re still young! I’m 28 and also intentionally childfree; while it may not sound completely natural for me to speak like I’m chronically online in most social and professional settings, I think people who can appreciate the evolution of language or culture (in a way that surpasses generational borders) display a keen sense of adaptability and intelligence. Being “cool” is cringe, there’s so much freedom in enjoying what makes you happy/entertains you! I hope you’re kicking cancers ass and can be yourself regardless of narrow minded people. ❤
@@Lemon.Girl14 Oh yeah I'd never talk like that at work haha. Outside of work yes, online yes but people expected me to still speak like I'm giving dissertations outside of work, It's this weird Grey area.
Oh also thank you for the kind words! I really appreciate people like you. 💛
Hey I’m an oldbie, too. In my 40s and started as a VERY early adopter on MOO and irc chat. I know what it’s like to be chronically online but also feel old as shit and a bit bullied for it when realistically bro… we own this place

Brittany was on fire this episode! 27:40 really made me think
Accidentally the first person to watch this week's episode. I have been WAITING for the meme history episode.
My first ever experience with a meme was on MySpace when I was 9 years old. It was a dancing cat singing “I’m a cat I’m a kitty cat and I meow meow meow, and I meow meow meow” ❤😂
Omg memory unlocked
same😂
"who up postulating" is INCREDIBLE and we need merch of it
So fun little thing- “bad luck Brian” comes into my restaurant all the time with his family and I wait on him frequently 😂 he was there last night!
Tumblr will to this day be king of “reaction memes”. It does not get more niche, esoteric, and dada than there.
The braided pigtails are soooo cute!
I reallyyyyyy want to explain medieval memes to ya’ll because theyre hilarious, memes have been around since the dawn of humanity and once u learn to recognize them you notice them everywhere
I have a degree in medieval history, Brittany if you see this I would LOVE to talk about historical memes with you if you are interested.
I guarentee you, the reason "Johnny Johnny, Yes Papa" and "Baby Shark" are the top viewed videos on UA-cam is purely from my 2-year-old niece's obsession with both songs.
y’all sitting on different sides makes me feel the same way i would if rhett and link sat on different sides. it shouldn’t matter in my brain but it does 😭
i just turned 18 and now am buying children’s toys and reliving what i missed out on bc of the internet and i found it’s really helpful
Brittany was so insanely insightful in this episode, not only with the art history, but with deconstructing the underlying emotive motivations.
But y’all 👏🏻 BROKE👏🏻MY 👏🏻HEART for referencing Charlie the unicorn but not referencing the YT video *End of Ze World* 🤌🏻 Truly life altering content.
Also, on Advice Animals: That was Business Cat and the dinosaur was Philosoraptor.
Two of my favorite memes for no reason are the “We irritating 😂😂😂” meme and the “Gossip girl” meme where they rearrange the letters. Those two really stuck with me for no reason.
Go piss girl is like my favorite meme of all time for absolutely no reason
I SAY GO PISS GIRL SO MUCH
@@alyssaes21 YESSSSS
we irrigating 😂
the both of them not knowing that markipliers face is on the E meme... that should've been a home run
5:45 “ venereal disease” is the same as STI & STD. they all mean the same thing, but the stigma behind venereal diseases caused doctors to change it to STD. and then the stigma behind STDs caused doctors to change it to STI. it’s all the same!!! just change of wording to lessen the stigma behind :)
I disagree. Rothko still slaps, he made the paints himself. He composed those canvases and color combos and they communicate so much
Ikr! Very solid concept, still holds up
what does it communicate now to a modern person? this is a fr question i dont get art beyond thinking things are pretty 😭
I freaking love art history and internet memes totally qualify. This delicious nonsense is my jammmm
new set up feels like im on a school field trip w brittany and sarah as my teachers
Let’s go brothers sisters and siblings
Edit: I swear to got Stanley puts the word “titular” in the research just so Sarah will giggle at it
Edit edit: Love you guys, and while some of the famous “Dress” photos were edited to look a certain way, that and the Yanny and Laurel situation is genuinely just spooky neuroscience and differences in perception between individuals
i think they meant difference in lighting when people look at it. i saw it as both at different times!!
i mean this as an absolute compliment I swear but I cannot believe sarah got through saying 'potters puppet pals' so many times in a row, go sarah!!
56:00 Fun fact about the term “Rickroll”: It’s name is derived from “duckroll”. A few years before the rickroll meme, there was an April Fool’s Day prank done by some online forum mods (can’t remember which site, sorry) where the word “egg” in a post would change to the word “duck.” Somebody mentioned an eggroll, and it was changed to “duckroll,” which was such a silly mental image to users that someone even photoshopped a picture of a duck w/ wheels. That was the “duckroll” image, which was then often used as a bait-and-switch by trolls, only it was an image instead of a video.
Omg I wish I could go back to when rage comics and me Gusta were the peak of internet comedy. Memebase wasn’t blocked on my highschool computers and laughing at those dumb memes was the best.
I would absolutely love for y'all to do an episode on dark videos on youtube/internet! like the videos of dark videos iceberg or something like that. Videos like charlie the unicorn and don't hug me i'm scared or even videos like I feel fantastic. you could also do a video on weirdcore or dreamcore!
Stan twitter is ONLY reaction memes/ videos/ pictures and it’s genuinely so funny. I don’t think it’s just a millennial thing bc most of stan twt is gen z, but the whole community is based upon finding the appropriate reactions to their favs. What Brittany said is sooo relatable bc I also have a folder full of reaction memes just from being on stan twt LOL
This was pretty good coverage of the concept of memes. I'm so happy you guys included happy bunny and Kilroy.
I know it’s not normally funny, so I only do this in texts with friends, but I adore finding the perfect gif for a “me when” statement about whatever’s happening in my life
37:00 have to completely disagree on the principle that things don’t go viral anymore. The first thing that comes to my mind are the viral tweets that go beyond Twitter to the point where people see screenshots of tweets no matter what app or platform they’re on. The idea that the kombucha girl meme was the last thing to go viral is beyond me 💀💀
It's fun to see how memes went from haha jokes and humiliation to bringing humour to feelings like anger and sadness or lonliness
Glad to listen while I spiral and have Arby’s for breakfast 😂
Can you do an astrology episode?
every monday i wait patiently for this podcast to be posted and every monday yall deliver, thank you for your service
Love you both my babes!!! ...this upload + Trixie's upload are what I literally live for on Mondays. Muahaha jk not that serious, but FRFR I love love love looooooooove this podcast!!!
“surrealism started with salvador dali” is one of the most PAINFUL things to hear that dude was so late to the surrealism game 😭 the others didn’t even like him
y’all should make a tanacon episode 😭😭😭
“Post 9/11 meme boom” 😂 that made me spit laughing oh my fucking god I love it
its crazy bc its also true. just like there was undoubtedly a pandemic meme boom
Mark rothko wasn’t a great guy, plus his paintings are really boring to look at far away, but if you get the chance to see one in person i highly recommend getting up close to it until the edges aren’t in your periphery any longer. it’s an otherworldly experience
also! these paintings are so famous because his work is pretty much seamless. for the time and medium, this was insanely time consuming and difficult to achieve! sorry to info dump on your video! but i heard “mark rothko” and stopped rotting in my room to tell u this. im gonna go do laundry now
Omg I catch ur videos in under 20 mins of uploading. I'm not obsessed--u are! 😅 Happy Halloween everyone!!🎃🦇
You guys should do an episode all about virality in general and how it started and changed over the years. I know you touched on it a little here but I definitely think it would be interesting especially from the perspective of two people who’ve gone viral multiple times before.
i wrote an entire essay in my biology course totally refuting dawkins creating the concept of memes because the sociological theory of “cultural transmission” already existed and dawkins basically co-opted much of the theories from there and found a word to rhyme with genetics so that it seems like he created the concept… but he just made the word itself, which could be a meme in itself but by no means did dawkins first think of the social and cultural event
Why did I think Stanley was an old man until THIS episode 😭
to be fair stanley is a very old man kind of name
FilmCow made so many iconic UA-cam videos like Charlie the Unicorn and Llamas with Hats!!! Such a specific time in UA-cam!!
Being chronically online from a young age as I have means that I’m not only aware of the “E” meme but I recognized that it was Markiplier’s face on Lord Farquads body lmaoo

It’s an acceptable pronunciation tho. Either neesh or neech
@@plutonium2 maybe only in the USA but not elsewhere
@@xoALSox well I’m Irish living in Australia so at least two other places. Also, I teach at a university. I’m pretty sure 🤗
@@plutonium2 accepting a potentially common mistake doesn’t make it correct. The word, through originally Latin, is French.
Anyway it wasn’t that deep. I find it endearing how she says it; doesn’t mean it’s right though
@@xoALSox right has nothing to do with accepted pronunciations. There are frequently regional adoptions that over time become their own version of the word. Americans don’t say foyer properly either but that doesn’t make them wrong. It means they are using an accepted regional dialect you arrogant dope. Lol
I was in public and there was a mom with 2 kids. They were waiting for the elevator so there's that little *ding* and the older kid (around 3 years old) just full on starts crying.
Just imagine your life you've been inside your house then this metal box starts screamin at you?
At 28:18 they mention wanting to make a Tumblr episode and I am pretty sure this comment will get buried under the others, but I genuinely wish they could be the first big content creators to properly address the "Death of Tumblr" and its actual reasons for happening. Everyone loves to hyper-focus on the NSFW ban but they never bother looking into why exactly it happened and how it got to that point. Anyway, long-story-short, Tumblr was being used as a CP sharing hub alongside kik, telegram and dropbox. If you go and search for 'Tumblr' on News sites from 2014 until today you will see that the site continuously pops up in testimonies from pedophiles after being brought to justice. Access to CP was unbelievably "easy" because it was hidden almost in plain sight via a strange pipeline that connected porn blogs, art blogs and photography blogs, which is why the algorithm and "nudity tracker" created to wipe NSFW content from the site is so relentless. Due to the Tumblr App being hosted by the Apple App Store, the warnings and potential legal consequences brought onto Tumblr by the US Department of Justice were going to damage Apple itself, hence the final version of the app straight up hiding blogs it deems 18+, nudity, some lgbtq content as well as female-presenting nipples.
I think it will be interesting if this information is somehow able to be brought up; it sure isn't as fun as talking about fandoms and SuperWhoLock, but I think it's necessary for people to learn about it properly as well as to realize that the issue is far from over and that sadly, the brand new go-to hub for such content and methods of sharing happens to be Twitter, despite getting much less press.
I LOVE this episode, Brittany is 1000% on point with the art history and i appreciate their exploration of memes through this lens. yall are both gorgeous and intelligent and Stanley’s research and writing are fuckin incredible
