The very thing it needs to survive and Tumblr keeps pushing it away, lol. I don't know if I would rather see Tumblr change into another insta/snapchat/tiktok slash blog frankenstein, or stay the same and die one day.

its so funny/interesting to see brittany talk about tumblr as if its not still going. the current tumblr landscape is so different from what it was in the hipster v fandom era. Now the only people left on it are those of us who have refused to leave, even after the various exodus to twitter and tiktok. We're like that old man from up, knowing this piece of shit house is gonna go down eventually, but we're gonna be here when it does.

It was really interesting realizing that Tumblr is truly a website where YOU used to get to curate your space. NOT an algorithm. And it was highly personalized for each and every person.
I think it's interesting how that's also what leads to it being like a vaccuum style environment that might not encourage discourse, but that was my favorite part. It was safe because I made it whatever I wanted

my husband and i met on tumblr because we ran 2 of the biggest pale grunge band blogs in 2015 (top blogs on search lmao) hes from uk im from miami and we hav been married 6 years lol. crazy times i actually went to a tumblr event at art basel and some of the tumblr staff recognized my blog and said "i could tell you're from tumblr." that was the biggest accomplishment of my teens
but also i have ptsd and it literally gave my husband n i depression lol

The classic rock fandom was/is the epitome of baby-ing old men. Most of the subjects of our desires weren't even dilfs, they were Gilfs, some long gone. But tumblr was the only way we could live our 70s groupie fantasies and has given us very iff-y and f-ed up views and thought about relationships with big age gaps (podcast worthy topic in of itself)

I think there was/is immense value in people who are not straight white men having a community to discuss this era of music, because often their opinions are not valued at all. Rob Sheffield can write cringy articles waxing poetic about The Beatles, but women + poc + queer people don't have their voices put on that kind of Rolling Stone platform even when they have immensely valuable things to say (The Beatles were /made/ by gay men, and women from all different backgrounds. The band members themselves acknowledged it).

I’ve been on Tumblr since 2013 and it’s had irreversible effects on my personality and mental health, and I’ve been looking forward to this episode for so long!
I remember The misha black out (where everyone changed their profile picture to misha Collins from supernatural, Remember tumblr con? Or tumblr prom but mostly I learned so much about social justice (racism, transphobia) and even about gender and politics it really thought me what school wouldn’t and I love 💕 it TO THIS DAY

i love that this is coming out today bc if youve been on tumblr over the past couple days youll know that everyones been bringing back the cringy fandom stuff in an effort to scare off the people trying to flee twitter. its so funny bc youll see the old fandom posts followed immediately by screencaps of people tweeting about how they tried to rejoin tumblr and were met w the cringeposting and think that everyone on tumblr is still posting like that when the site has evolved so much past that era
I agree! I'm kind of conflicted, because for me, my experience on tumblr has been great recently. Lots of art, fanart, memes and original fantasy fiction and fanfic-- I think more traffic could be good for tumblr, but there's also the whole "Let's monetize this dead horse site into the ground" thing that a lot of people are afraid of, and that fear is valid. Tumblr is great when it's not seen as a possible money-making machine-- it has the early internet spirit of creativity and freedom that's gone now, excepting Neocities. I'm tentatively waiting for the day that every CEO collectively agrees that Tumblr is a hopeless money pit, and when no one buys it, it will die.
I cannot overstate the immense impact that Homestuck had on tumblr, especially fandom tumblr. The Homestuck fandom set the stage for basically every fandom drama of the 2010s and fundamentally changed the way webcomics were made and consumed. Not to mention how the cosplayers impacted conventions and the insane Kickstarter… worth an episode on its own, but you’d probably need to call in reinforcements like Strange Aeons or Sarah Z to get the full picture
omg a homestuck episode would be... something else.... the sharpie incident, the quadrant system, msparp, hussie, hiatuses, all the spinoffs and AUs (broadwaystuck, keshastuck, heinoustuck, bloodswap), the cultural impact it had on buckets, faygo, con air, ICP, betty crocker, the words "nook" and "bulge" (iykyk, im so sorry)

Homestuck cosplay was my introduction to it! I ended up selling horns on Tumblr and at conventions for a bit. Do you remember the sea of daves at every convention for like 5 years straight? Daves as far as the eye could see... I also fondly remember when it was updating, and you would get a notification at a convention and see every homestuck cosplayer immediately flock to whomever had data to read it

You guys should look up the “just girly things” blog backstory cuz it’s actually so interesting. To sum it up (poorly), it was started by a lesbian who wanted to show her love and appreciation towards girls. And I think she was still closeted at the time. She ended up getting like a bunch of co-owners on the account, cuz she couldn’t keep up with the demand, but then they ended up not posting and being inactive, so she kept the account running ALL BY HERSELF (keep in mind she had MILLIONS of followers, and she was handling all this alone) and she didn’t even want the account to keep going but because it got so popular & out of control, she just kept doing it for her followers. She also got bullied hardcore for it which is just so heartbreaking to know. And if I remember correctly, I think she didn’t even identify with a lot of the things that she was posting, but she just wanted to post something and hopefully someone else could relate to it.
This is just my very poor brief summary of it but pleaseeee go watch the video on it, someone posted the full backstory here on UA-cam and it’s actually really interesting and not at all what people would expect.

I’m like 5 years older than Brittany, so it’s really fascinating to listen to this. I can pick out elements of Tumblr fan culture in my experience on MySpace, Xanga, and Live Journal. Those three really paved the way for Tumblr in my opinion. MCR/FOB/P!ATD Live journal fandom was the unhinged uncle to SuperWhoLock Tumblr Fandom 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂💅🏼

If you want to hear more about the subcultures of tumblr, Strange Aeons has done a few different videos about it and Sarah Z did a PHENOMENAL deep dive on Dashcon (I've been on the hellsite since October 2011)
KPOP was actually huge on tumblr, I just think you had to be apart of it. It was very comparable to 1D fandom even back then. You weren’t even allowed to Stan more than one group without people actually hating you. It was insane. 1000s of new edits every day. Opening an international world for all these groups. I’m pretty sure it’s the reason why it got so big today. I was going to Kpop concerts in LA because of it. And this was in 2012-2015
This also included a handful of Korean variety shows that became very popular. Example: Running Man

This!!! I had a different blog dedicated to every group I stanned bc multifandom blogs weren’t cool back then. Also, the “comeback” culture of kpop music lead to infinitely new content which stood out to me since every other fandom recycled their content.
I 100% would be a different person today if it weren’t for tumblr (for better or worse lol). I learned a lot about LGBT people and life in general outside my small town, but I also came dangerously close to becoming irreparably “chronically online”. Like there has to be a balance somewhere.

The intertwine between fandom and tumblr is so intense, it shaped my little brain in bad ways but also my god I loved it so much. My love of fandom culture was born there and has stayed strong.

Tumblr was indeed a home for us, introverts traumatized by our parents in our childhood.
I know they talked about the longevity of tumblr but its really apparent in the meme culture. tik tok has a meme cycle that's constantly moving, what's funny last week is now old and overdone. But on tumblr you can reference a decade old meme and people don't find it cringe.

God I was on tumblr at its prime in like 2010 as a sophomore in high school. Also I was friends with Barbie Ferreira who's Kat on Euphoria so when I saw her I was like !!! She had a dieting side blog we'd talk to each other on (lord that ED fitness stuff) wild times lol. So when I found out the showrunners wanted to give her an ED plotline and she got mad I was like yeah makes sense don't blame her (also not saying she had one, it truly was the tumblr era).

I have such deep nostalgia for tumblr. Particularly what I loved was the chronological dashboard and the tag system. I would often go back through certain tags for various reasons--fashion or art inspiration especially. I often think about going back to it just for that but I don't know if it would be worth it, and I definitely don't have the free time I did back in those days.

I think right now is such an important part in Tumblr history because Twitter refugees are transferring over to Tumblr. There are so many posts that welcome Twitter users and show them the ropes.

I was 24 and married when I got on tumblr in 2009 I remember being in the goth/rockabilly community I’m still friends with a lot of the girls I met on there 🤝

I’m a tumblr veteran, joined in 2010 and an avid user from 2010-2014. I’m glad I left before it became the toxic hell hole it’s remembered as. I loved my time on tumblr but it’s SO different now than when I used it. Not sure if I would go back.

My tumblr experience basically consisted of:
-life affirming trans-masculine content
-a constant stream of fan art/headcanons from the horniest Hobbit trilogy fans in the world
-and by extension a rabbit hole for my celebrity hyperfixations, in which shaped my entire personality
-exactly 1 viral Star Wars fan art post
I remember writing a post DEFENDING Black Widow's depiction in Age of Ultron 🙃And I was apart of the Despicable Me fandom for a bit--Rule 43 for suuure. There's a reason I deleted my entire account lmao. Despite the cringe, I'm glad I had it when I did. Fandom and celebrity hyperfixations took over my life for a minute, sure, but I was inspired to make a lot of art, and I genuinely benefitted from the visibility of other trans masc folks.
Edit: wow the obsessing over older men thing, I'm glad it wasn't just me 😅😅 That culture somehow engulfed me, and I'm asexual! Like??? I'm still baffled by it

You guys inspired me to look at my Tumblr. I’m cackling at my handle being “hoodrathannah” & most of my reblogs are Gossip Girl gifs with the occasional aesthetic scenery 😂😂. What an era.

i think the people that don't get/don't like why tumblr is being 'purposely cringey' in order to drive away twitter is because they dont understand that people don't want tumblr to be an amalgamation of corporate accounts, celerities and influencers anymore. like be fr do we really think that the people who post viral tweets and reply ads for products under it because they got sponsored/paid can be pulled off on tumblr?

I'm the same age as Brittany and was on tumblr at the same time but I was in a totally different sector (mostly weeb/otaku stuff). But even so, she nailed it on the core experiences that we all survived no matter what our dashboard looked like. Strong war flashbacks LOL
