  • When most people hear the word "vigilante," they think about heroes like Batman or Robin Hood. You wouldn't normally think of a vigilante as someone spending their free nights at their computer opening a cold case from 1957. Brittany and Sarah spend this week deep diving into the phenomenon of strangers on the internet banding together to solve crime.

    I've actually "cancelled" someone, although I didn't publish his information. This asshole had posted a video of a rat on fire (It's clearly a pet I'm literally on the verge of a crying panic attack just remembering it), to a Twitter account that posted photos of pet rats every couple of hours. I pm'ed him and told him to take it down, and when he refused I went to report his Twitter account. I saw that he very publicaly posted their name, that he was going to medical school, and even saying which school it was. I took a screen shot of the post and the messages he sent me, along with the very public information he posted, and then emailed the info to the college. Someone who tortures small animals would obviously not be the best doctor, and thankfully the school agreed. I saw him super angry about being kicked out of college a few days later, thank goodness.

    The only example of a person who’s actions were condemned but the individual was forgiven that i can think of is Jenna Marbles. Some of her old videos were brought to attention as harmful, yet many of those who were in the position to forgive her (people targeted by the videos) did in fact forgive her. people believed that the videos were not a true reflection of Jenna’s current beliefs and were ready to forgive her and continue supporting her if she continued making videos.

    I didn’t solve a crime, she wasn’t reported missing YET. But my moms friend is from Arkansas & his niece (or something) wasn’t answering her parents/friends. It had been 3 days & they were all worried. She had moved in with her boyfriend & stopped talking to everyone.
    I knew the city she was from (not in) & her first name & last name (spelled wrong lol). I searched all social media, found every profile of hers. Searched tagged photos, following/followers, previous photos, etc. Found a guy that appeared a lot on IG. He didn’t have IG so I search her FB friends for someone that looks like him & I FIND HIM.
    I find his whole family, their mechanic business & find out he works there & his dad owns it & he (which means she also) lives WITH THE DAD.
    Next morning 8am sharp, he calls the mechanic place & ask if the guy knows the girl they were looking for. He said, “yeah, she’s dating my son, there at our house right now”.
    MIC DROP.
    He told the dad to have her contact one of her parents because they were about to report her missing. I def felt like Batman or something. 😂

Jenna made those jokes in a time that was much different and that kind of humor was completely acceptable. As times changed, so did she. In a circumstance like hers, I think it’s ridiculous that people even bitched about her knowing that Jenna is truly a good person. We need to focus on real problems

    • @cez_is_typing
      @cez_is_typing 2 роки тому +12

      @@bish_puddin Not at all, of course times have changed, no ones saying they haven't otherwise she should have been cancelled back then. And I think most people know Jenna is a good person but I also think minorities deserve the comfort of an apology. Imagine watching a creator you have loved for years and then finding an old video of them doing something targettting your community and no one saying anything about it. Everyone in Jenna's fandom deserves to feel safe so the apology was much appreciated. I think if she had apologised through twitter people would have accepted it just as much because she was so genuine. Both the choice of making an apology video and leaving indefinitely were Jenna's and I personally believe that she did it out of the kindness of her own heart and she chose to leave because she just needed a break and this was the perfect time to do it. There will always be bigger issues in the world, but that doesn't mean the smaller ones arent still important :)

I thought it was insane to watch this trial, to have that much exposed, but it WAS necessary in this case. Amber's attorney went on tv and literally lied, if we hadn't seen the trial ourselves, we would probably have believed her lies. Johnny Depp is the one who wanted it live streamed for the public, for everyone to see the truth. He wasn't there to win the case, he was there to show the truth and all the evidence that was never brought up in the UK trial, which was a completely different kind of trial. And don't take this as I'm purely on his side, it was very clear they were in a very toxic relationship and both were toxic and abusive towards each other. But in the end, Johnny won the case big time and anyone can watch the trial themselves to see that, without speculating what actually happened in court.

      The UK case had nothing to do with proving abuse… it was another defamation case against the Sun, not Amber, and was not intended to investigate abuse. It also did not include much of Johnny’s evidence and intentionally omitted evidence that made Amber look bad (including her not fulfilling her contractual donation to the ACLU and Children’s Hospital and lying about it). Further, the UK case was heard by a singular judge, no jury. And while I’m not saying UK vs US courts are better, there is a big difference in a case being heard by many people that were specifically selected to be unbiased towards the case vs one man who does not have to pass through such a rigorous vetting process.

    I do agree sometimes people can go too far. But sometimes these cases need to be talked about. These people had terrible things happen to them and these stories could save a life. I think once you take the theatre out of it, if we don't talk and make commotion sometimes cases go cold

    • @lucywing8490
      @lucywing8490 2 роки тому +3

      yes some cases do need to be talked about especially if they have gone cold or police don’t seem to be investigating further for any reason. they just have to be very careful because a lot of people seem to forget that these are people crimes with real people and loved ones are left behind who can see them making a crime out as some sort of reality show. i think if a case is ongoing it should be left alone but talking about cold or solved cases can reveal patterns to help other cases be identified and/or avoided.

      This makes me think of Kendall Rae. She actually does things to help victims of crime, like working with the families and giving them her platform. She has even spoken out against true-crime being used as entertainment. There's no shock factor or dramatization, just explaining the facts.
      Which makes me think, a lot of what I've learned from her channel hasn''t necessarily been life-saving, but still incredibly insightful. Like so many of these cases being mishandled by law enforcement, or prejudice leading to certain clues or factors being ignored. Even getting to see the ways a case can be solved.

    for the true crime episode: there is definitely a difference between being interested in true crime and being obsessed with it. there is never an excuse for saying you have a “favorite” case or find serial killers attractive. however, a lot of violent trauma survivors find comfort in knowing at the end of the video, the perpetrator will be convicted. (unsolved cases are anxiety inducing and dreadful so for the sake of my point i’m omitting unsolved/active crimes) personally i’m against speculating on active cases or not giving accurate respect to the deceased and their families, but keep in mind the calm storytelling of a horrific event can extend normalcy to someone living in active trauma response.

But I still am confused when they put on makeup for example while talking about how a family got slaughtered... It's off putting, for me atleast. Maybe because I find it disrespectful? Idk death in my book doesn't get talked about easily and especially not dead people. I wonder how it is for other people.

    Humans have been obsessed with true crime for AGES, this is in no way a new trendy wave of interest. Jack the Ripper was probably the first major modern serial murderer to completely capture the world's attention and obsession in 1888, newspapers literally asked people who their favorite criminals were in the 1930s, and In Cold Blood written by Truman Capote in 1965 is one of the most influential true crime novels ever written. Love yall!!

      I’m mean public executions were a huge things for centuries before that even. People would literally take the whole family to go watch the local “criminal” be killed. A lot of true crime podcasts and ESPECIALLY live-streamed court cases are just an extension of that. Entertainment before truth and justice.

      @@sweetembrace6706 I'm 1,000% saying that, just because we have the access to see and know what everyone is interested in BECAUSE of social media doesn't mean that true crime obsession is happening in a vacuum, and it's actually pretty ignorant to disregard the entirety of human history just because you live right now. We all used to sit around the TV every night watching 60 Minites, 20/20, Unsolved Mysteries, Forensic Files, etc. after dinner, and I bet you can name at least 3 other true crime novels that have continued to be best-sellers over the decades since they were written. In regards to the Unite the Right march in Charlottesville: someone did die. Some a55hole deliberately drove their truck through counter protestors, killing a woman and injuring 35 others. I went to UVA, and graduated a year prior, so know the area well (and was personally *incredibly* concerned about my friends that still lived in the area that were there to counter protest). This guy drove through counter-protestors in a super confined space on the Corner right near UVA grounds - there was essentially no escaping him. I hate that someone uninvolved in the Unite the Right rally was dragged for being there, but I'm also super pro calling out people who were identified to be involved. What happened in Charlottesville was despicable, and I'm ashamed that the city ever let a rally like that be held in the first place.

He was convicted for something he didn't do and the evidence was there and pointed to someone else completely but the crooked cops and lawyers wouldn't let that evidence come to light. If it were for a couple true crime UA-camrs that helped my family we would've never gotten the right guy, the evidence or the attorney we needed to get my uncle out. They honestly do more good then harm and are actually doing something positive to help unlike other UA-camrs who only care about themselves. Just wanted you guys to hear this coming from an actual family who has been impacted by those people, not just that but when my best friend was killed in a hit and run it was the internet who helped us find the driver, there's always going to be bad people that do things for the wrong reason but it shouldn't outshine the good ones.
