    I love that you've immersed yourself into the culture of surfing, yes Etiquette !!! Boils down to Respect! Unwritten rules, (Manners) in the water. on Oahu like (pipeline) popular world surf spots are constantly crowded easy 50-80 surfers out from around the world, especially when it's pumping, That line up takes years to get permission to take off on the sweet spot. However, enter the ocean 🌊 with Aloha like you did, being open & asking questions will get you far in a local lineup. Where they will give you waves and watch out for you. 😅 Surfing is a hard core community with a big heart 💝 lol
    So many lessons of life in one session. Enjoy

      Yes, very well said. Even if someone doesn't agree with the whole local mentality, it doesn't help anyone to get mad and just do whatever you want. Show respect and you'll go far in surfing.

    Your "talk to surfers" advice is gold! At every level of surfing. My lady started surfing 3 years ago, and was VERY intimated by the all male line-up. I always made sure everyone knew she was learning, and everyone always helped her get into waves and made sure she knew where they were when she enevitably made a drop in mistake. -- For me, I am pretty aggressive in my wave count. Thus, I will always backout of a few waves for spacific guys that aren't getting enough (let waves through and make friends!). Last bit of advice, use the words "so sorry, my mistake" (always!)

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  Рік тому +1

      Yea its huge.. and nothing to be afraid about. I totally meant to say to apologize when you make a mistake.. meant to get it in this video lol

    • @billytuchscher
      @billytuchscher Рік тому

      @Longboard Sessions ...I hate to admit that when I drop in on someone, it's often to assert myself in a crowded line-up 🤫. But, I always apologize and make sure to give that particular guy plenty of space for the rest of the session. .... I guess there is nuance to the etiquette. 🤷

    Some really handy pearls of wisdom. I'm so conscious of not getting in the way of the locals (I have visions of the Point Break scene where Keanu gets his leg rope cut in half).
    When heading to a new beach I might like to surf at regularly, I'll book a surf lesson at the local surf shop so I have a 'buddy' with me for the first time. It helps a lot.
    Love your videos too Brian, they are so entertaining and well made. Please do lots more of these!

    Always good, honest, nuanced commentary...Thanks as always Brian...Santa Cruz is an intimidating place. I once saw 2 guys punch each other in the face out in the water, and the another tow guys 30 minutes later go to fight each other in the parking lot over beef they had in the water an hour prior. Enjoy California sounds like an amazing vacation. Funny story - I had a local approach me after I had to bale out of nice right when I saw someone heading left. I thought I did something wrong. One of the locals had watched it happen. He approached me with words of advice. "Watch out for that guy he is goofy foot that only goes left regardless of the direction of the wave." Good to know and I thanked him. Like you said communication is key.

    here's a spot called godzilla, if you go in they throw stones and puncture your wheels. the other spots in the area are free, but that one is not. I don't know if it's right or wrong, but on the wave days there it is a jungle. perhaps they are not entirely wrong.

    I skimboarded on a fiberglass board for 2 years and I currently skim waves on a carbon fiber board. Do I need to get a foam board to start or is my skimboarding balance sufficient enough to go straight to the fiberglass surfboards?

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  11 місяців тому +1

      That's an excellent question. I suppose it depends on your level of skimboarding. If you can full turn around and ride a wave in, i'd say go straight to fiberglass. But if you struggle with skimboarding, i'd start with foam.
      The only thing a good skimboarder will have to learn is wave selection / positioning and catching waves / popping up. The rest will come naturally I imagine

    If you're on a longboard surf where ever you want. Sit outside shortboards and take turns. Tip 3, if you mess up go to the back of the queue. Tip 4, don't drop in.
    Waves are free doesn't mean they all should be yours.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  Рік тому +1

      That 'mess up' tip is important. It might seem annoying to beginners, but it's kinda a way to weed out beginners from the heavier more local lineups. I've been surfing a crowded point break and someone screwing up the takeoff and a set wave can really upset certain people. Better to sit farther inside if you're still learning and work your way up as you improve.

      @@LongboardSessions I surf at a location where logs are hated. They are not hated for any good reason just some people want any reason to blame for their own poor skills or ego.
      I'm only longboarding when it's small but that doesn't seem to be their point.
      Just a couple of weeks ago I had a fellow cutback straight into me intentionally, because he thought I wasn't supposed to be there. Everyone has a right to surf what ever they want , where they want, within reason.
      I would agree that beginners can be a danger and a nuisance in a crowded spot. Plus, it's not good to learn in large hollow conditions, even if it looks inviting.
