    Masterpiece of a video man. Great job. And The final message of actually embracing criticism to get better instead of just shrugging it off or pushing back is like next level grit / growth mindset. I find that attitude lacking a lot these days, so it’s good to see!

    There is so much wisdom packed into this video, I love it!
    Top 3 takeaways for me:
    Making things hard in invigorates passion.
    Criticism helps us grow, don’t take it too personally.
    Subtle reminder that having kids doesn’t have to be the death of your surfing career and can help you connect in fun ways.
    This is not AI generated. I’m a real person heading to the Jersey Shore next week, crossing fingers for a party wave with you.

    I grew up surfing very small summer waves in York Beach Maine, and The Wall in New Hampshire. I used this same technique, not because the waves were fast, but they were very weak. In certain circumstances, the pop up can be used as a mini "pump" to accelerate into the noseride. Veedster does this really well. I needed to get to the nose fast because an 8" wave doesn't have a long ride anyway. It maximized my noseride time.
    Another really fun technique that uses your quick pop-up/ one step to the nose. Do a long fade turn, but instead of a sweeping bottom turn to set up for cross stepping, do a short pivot stall and then run to the nose like you did in this video. It creates a speed variation (fast on the fade, almost stopping on the pivot, very fast once you hit the nose) that I think looks and feels really fun. I also think this works really well on shifting sand beach breaks like New Jersey/ Long Island/ OB/ South Bay

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  Рік тому

      So true about the small waves.. faster you get there the more hang time you get!
      Wow I'll have to try that pivot fade thing. I believe I know exactly what you're talking about. Iv'e somewhat experienced that hard stall to a nearly 0 speed cross step, to insane acceleration on the nose. It's hard for me to get the timing down as I typically will just lose the wave because I didn't get to the nose fast enough.

      You for sure should take your time to get to the nose, especially in the beginning. I rushed it for so long and it held me back. Once I slowed things down I was able to speed them back up again.. if that makes any sense lol

    • @livingcoastalinventura
      @livingcoastalinventura Рік тому +1

      To really set up an excellent steep locked in nose ride or ten you need two things. 1 enter from deep and steep from behind the pocket. (The nose ride is a stall it’s self) so you want to enter with speed and once you step onto the nose in the five or ten position. You need to be going slightly faster then the wave, so when the “stall “takes place you end up in the curl. Now the second part. You need to be familiar enough with this feeling to surf from the nose, and 3 maneuvers work well from the nose to speed up or slow down. You can poke the nose down with your weight or press the nose into the pocket. You can do speed pump or wiggle the five position scraping under the lip. Or you can step back into the cheater five to turn under and around the section.

    I love how you handled this! I know the beach break struggle all too well surfing in the North East. I'm just happy when I can make my way to the end of the board with both feet, even if I'm an inch or so away from actually getting my toes off the nose. There's such a short window of opportunity to make it happen, but I appreciate your realistic approach. I will be trying this two steps to the nose approach, makes a lot of sense. As surfers we're always looking to improve our skills and look more stylish and graceful while doing so, but ultimately we're all surfing because it fricki'n FUN! Who cares if you don't get them toes off every time?! Not me! :)

    Fantastic video.
    Distilling criticism in to suggestions or advice can be difficult. Especially from rando internet "authorities".
    But you sure did it here.
    You rose to the challenge of getting toes over the nose.
    Toes on or near the nose is already difficult. And that extra couple inches can feel like a mile.
    There are plenty of people that reach a level of skill that seems to satisfy them. And they're content with that for life. And I'm glad they're out there having fun.
    But I'm like you.
    I'm always working on learning a new skill or relearning one I didn't get quite right the first time.
    Unless you're in a contest or showing off to your buddies you're only surfing for you and your enjoyment.

    Great video, love to see your son getting into it (and giving it to his Pops!) Seriously, though, are these trolls for real? “If a tree falls in the woods…” If I’m the only surfer out there, does anyone care that I’m a kook? Just got back from another session w/my new board. Conditions in MA are only fair this week, but the weather's too good not to try. The beach break is so expansive, I can use these 1-2' waves to focus on fundamentals and practice basics, such as my popup. (Nowhere near noseriding yet for me.) Also, I need to get my pre/post-surf routine down so as to be more efficient/enjoy more time in the water, esp. b/c Surfline says, “Next week… eh, mebbe not so good.”🤷‍♀️

    Noseriding is just a trick, but if it's fun, do it. Do what you enjoy. Surfing for 50 years this Summer, I could care less what other people think about my surfing. I'm not concerned with tricks, I only maneuver to get into the pocket. I'm not in a contest, no one can hurt my "score" when it's only in my head. I saw this one older lady who got up totally square like she was snow skiing, then she walked to the nose and did a soul arch: beautiful. "Some leashes are physical, some are ethereal." I think you over-think it, but you're getting there on your own path, so don't worry. My only criticism would be, considering your excellent progress, is to relax your arms and shoulders. You have some courage, my friend; surfers are notoriously condescending.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  Рік тому

      Thanks!!
      Actually , I didn't really slide out as much as the lip just hit me. The whole wave just closed out ahead of me for the most part. The fin is actually one of the most stable noseriders I have. It's got like 3 inches of horizontal rake which is where the stability comes from, even though the base is quite thin. It's a different fin that's for sure lol

  • @kronk5265
    @kronk5265 Рік тому +1

    Great Job! This video is great, and just because your toes arenʻt always over the nose, you are still nose riding once you get up to the front section whether people like it or not ;).

  • @MrNiceGuy442
    @MrNiceGuy442 Рік тому +1

    Thanks for another great video, sooner or later critics will come thats the price you pay when you become youtuber.
    My kook advice, you should sprint to the nose as soon as you finish your bottom turn and the nose is pointing to the shoulder, as you did when you got it right. otherwise theres no trimming to hold you on the nose, you should know that :) surely depends on the wave also, so I thnk the the speed of bottom turning and trimming is important to and not just the speed of the stepping.
    Keep pushing you.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  Рік тому

      yes! Yea every wave is different for sure, but i gotta keep working out this quick steps to the nose thing. It's really been helping latley

    We are all kooks ... That fin is crazy. Do you think changing it out will give you more stability for the nose ride?

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  Рік тому

      This fin is actually extremely stable on the nose. Even though the base is not so wide, the heavy rake brings the stability. It's a very cool fin.. review is coming haha
