    I've got my CPDs in a tank with ember tetras, chili rasboras, two female bettas and two otocinclus. The CPDs school with the tetras a lot, sometimes with the rasboras. They are really good fish, and I wouldn't call them boisterous, but definitely will say they are bold. Great for keeping the amphipod (scud) population down. I haven't had an issue with them jumping out, and I've got the water line at nearly two inches below the rim.
    I think they are fine with the chili rasboras, there's been no aggression or issues, but the rasboras don't really seek out the CPDs socially, and vice versa. The rasboras are more territorial now, like they've always ran the show in the community tank but since adding the CPDs they've been guarding their favorite cave more often. I added a couple caves to offset that behavior, along with more plants. I would say to anyone here, CPDs are great with tetras who will match their boldness and keep them in check, or will be great with larger rasbora species, but they aren't the most ideal tankmates for chili rasboras.
    The last thing I'll say about CPDs is that they are hyper-observant. If you sit perfectly still in front of their tank, they'll ignore you, but if you move so much as an inch, they'll all turn and stare at you. This is completely natural behavior for them, but it is jarring the first few times you witness it.
    As for stopping them jumping out, I think the best solution is to have a tank with numerous bits of interest: Botanicals, large bushy stem plants, lower the water line a bit more, being in a community tank, and things for them to hunt, such as amphipods, microworms or daphnia. CPDs are a highly intelligent fish (hyper-observant), and they enjoy exploring, investigating and interacting with objects and other fish. CPDs need access to a few different caves, too. Some fish species don't care about caves, some even like open water, but CPDs really need caves. For some reason when fish don't have enough cognitive enrichment, they start doing weird stuff like squeezing into spaces that ends up killing them, or jumping out of the tank. I noticed that my male betta fish became a lot more active and appears healthier after I started teaching him tricks by using hand-signals/ASL to "talk" to him.

    That's a seriously gorgeous tank! I've not tried keeping mine with shrimp, but know they love to eat their own fry if I can't get them out before an adult spots one. Definitely agree with you on the starting number of at least 8-10, they do much better. 🙂👍

      Cheer! This is quite a long time ago now the tank has changed so much since then. I'm going to tear it down and rescape it soon though. Not sure what I will do with it yet but.
      I've got these CPDs in a 10 gallon now trying to breed them. So far I've only managed to get one fry to adulthood because they really do love to eat their babies! I'm just going to collect the eggs and separate them moving forward, they spawn every day so it's basically an unlimited supply! Heres to a colony of 50!

I just colony breed mine with tons of plant cover and a separate fry tank at this time, so I don't have huge yields. I've just been checking the tank with a flashlight to catch the little sheen off the eyelash sized newly free swimming fry. Fantastic little fish, here's to your colony of 50! 🙂

    Great community there. Lovely tank. I've found my cpds way more active than I expected, having heard comments about them hiding away or people just not seeing them. At feeding time they go nuts shoving around the endlers who are usually the most boisterous. Colours have stayed real nice too so I'm pleased I went for them.

      They are my top favourite fish because they are so random in behaviour. It all comes down to the tank. They are very adaptable. Before this scape got really overgrown they used to be super fun to watch darting between the two islands. I've moved them to a new tank now to breed them and this tank is way more dense which has given them the the tradition characteristics but they do go mad for food like you say and early in the morning around spawning time. It's always chaos. I'd like to try a few more scape styles with them in the future so hopefully breeding goes well.

    I bought 8 CPDs about a week ago, sadly one passed away two days after purchasing them. They are young at the moment, but I want to breed them to get more, since they do better in large numbers.
    I got them because I have this massive fish tank for my axolotl, and the tank looks very empty, so I researched and found a couple different species that can live with axolotls. I am going to get some cardinal tetras as well to out with them.
    I know my axolotl may eat a few, so that’s why I am going to raise them up to adult age and breed them before I put them in the axolotl tank. I’m going to make sure I always have atleast 8 CPDs in a different tank (I’m doing the same with the cardinal tetras).
    I know putting them with the axolotl is a risk, but who knows, it might work out well. Never know until you try and don’t be afraid to take risks.

    Glad you shared this. I was boing to set up a tank for the first time in many years, and I wanted to include CPD's, but I also wanted to have two species of shrimp as clean up crew. That seems like it might not be a really good idea based on what you're saying. Now I must decide whether it will be the CPD's which I don't get, or the shrimp. I am not at all interested in breeding the CPD's, but I was hoping to get a few young off of the shrimp so that I would not have to buy more quite so frequently.

I was happily surprised to see how good shrimplets are at evading predators. They dart away in a blink of an eye. So far the only thing that really impacted my shrimp population was Planaria. Two years keeping them and I have never had a jumper. They do swim all levels.but most of the the time it's the middle or lower. I wouldn't bother with a lid. You were just unlucky. They are extremely easy to breed, easy to feed and easy to care for. More of them the better. I keep them in all four of my tanks with apistos, shrimp and LDA25.
    They are quite expensive to buy which I find strange as they are prolific breeders.

      You've been pretty luck with no jumpers I've heard a few people having problems. Usually when males are sparing they get fired up. The price is weird in some places here where I am they are fairly cheap but in Australia they want 30 bucks a fish in some places....

  • @MyVantasticLifeVoyage
    @MyVantasticLifeVoyage 8 місяців тому +1

    I’ve got 6 CPD’s, sadly they are 5 males and one female. I got them when they were young and they all had little color and it was hard to tell the sex. But they run the poor female ragged, when the males aren’t sparing with each other. I’ve tried to find more females but it seems in my area, the females don’t show up for sale often and the breeders tend to keep them. In fact, they are kind of hard to come by period in my area. Though if you keep checking the stores, they usually do show up. Their actions are entertaining for sure, and I love that they look like little brook trout to me. Lots of videos I watched before buying them said they were very shy, mine certainly are not. I have to shew them away from me constantly when I’m trying to siphon water from the tank for water changes, they’ll come right up to the tube and I’ve twice sucked one up the tube and into the bucket. Fortunately no injuries and I’ve since added at filter basket to my water changing tube and since then haven’t had any more bucket travelers. I keep mine with 6 Cherry shrimp, adults and the CPD’s don’t bother them at all in my experience. I have one Amano shrimp, same story. Your situation seems to be unique as I’ve seen them being kept with shrimp in other videos and not heard of problems before. My shrimp have not bred, yet but I’m sure the CPD’s will eat the babies if they can find them. The only other inhabitants are rams horn snails and even the tiniest of babies have been fine. Last thing I’ll say is all six of my CPD’s are finicky eaters. When I first got them, I had a hard time even getting them to eat live baby brine shrimp. I was like how the fuck did you little bastards make this long. I bought, blood worms, daphnia, flake and two kinds of micro pellets. With all foods they would go for the foods putting it in their mouths and spit right back out. Thankfully they finally did start eating regularly, but even still to this day they will play finicky with any new foods introduced to them. Some times after a few attempts they start eating it, but I’ve got one brand of a micro pellet they still won’t eat still to this day. It’s a well known quantity brand too, they just won’t eat it.

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  8 місяців тому

      A lot of people keep them with shrimp and they are adult shrimp safe, for the most part. But they absolutely destroy baby shrimp populations. I managed to breed my population of cpds up to about 25 (they are easy to breed) and once the numbers got higher my shrimp population stop growing entirely.
      I've heard a lot of stories now of males going crazy and killing every in a tank as well. It only seems to happen when they are solo though. Or without any females to annoy.
      They probably go mad with lust but they'll basically just kill everything else even things quite a lot bigger than them out of spite.
      They are stilly favourite fish though and I've notice their shy nature is entirely dependent on light or cover from above. Cover from above and dimish lights and they go everywhere. Bright lights and open waters they are more skittish.
      Hopefully you can get some more females and get some breeding going they are a great little project fish

    I think you'd have better luck with CPDs and shrimp with denser vegetation and more hiding spots in hardscape. • @IndoorEcosystem

      I do agree with you on that. Though my tank has some really dense areas the issue is it goes from dense to open areas and after a while the shrimp and fry venture out to the edges and the CPDs a waiting to pick them off.
      I think another factor is the population density of the CPDs in the tank i probably need a lot more to keep them all occupied with each other. For now some will venture off on solo trips and just hunt for critters.

      @@elzonn I would have suggested lemons as well that was my first thought but i haven't seen them really bright either. The only other really interesting one ive seen are green rasboras but they aren't big bodied. They are more like ember tetra size.
      It's tough finding stuff outside the usual colours.

      It sits around the 23c to 25c mark most of the time but can go down to 21c at times. During the massive heatwave last year it got up to 28-29c which they could handle for a couple of days but after about 3 days you could see them getting quite lethargic. So I had to get a fan onto the water to get temps down. I'd try to keep them under 25c if possible.

      These guys would be perfectly fine. They breed really easily as well if have the time to collect the eggs. Worth doing to get a nice big school without paying a lot of money. I'd start with 10 then breed them up to about 30. They are great in bigger groups.

      You'll see them munch on the very tiny new born shrimps. Ones they get a little bigger it's less of an issue. As for the betta that's going to be 50/50 he may absolutely hate them and want to kill them or hell just ignore them. Bettas are odd like that.
