Rose Morgan (Barbra Streisand), who still lives with her mother (Lauren Bacall), is a professor of Romantic Literature who desperately longs for passion in her life. Gregory Larkin (Jeff Bridges) a mathematics professor, has been burned by passionate relationships and longs for a sexless union based on friendship and respect. This movie was underrated. Says alot about expectation and the superficial exteriors we all can have.

This really was a very good movie with some very good messages yet for whatever reason was very underrated. You couldn't get any better actors of the day and from the day! Lauren Bacall? Such a beautiful legend and so dearly missed, RIP Ms Betty. So I just got done watching it I think for just my second time, the first being a Blockbuster video rental. The Gregory character really shows what oddballs men can be sometimes. I knew someone similar to Gregory but lived a solo loner existence he never was able to find the right real soulmate because of all his peculiarities. He ended up dieing a few years ago, cancer, too young, sad lonely. Just sayin just a story.

I remember watching this movie for the first time. I was 9 my mom and I were huge Barbra fans, the adult jokes past through my head, but omg this movie made an impression on a 9 year old little girl. It was one of my all time favorites it wasn’t appropriate but it was everything for me lol

Men Are Generally Expected To Be Strong, Aggressive, And Bold. Every Society, Ethnic Group, And Culture Has Gender Role Expectations, But They Can Be Different From Group To Group. You May Live As Long As You Love And You Love As Long As You Live And You Have A Beautiful Life Together.

Love this movie
After rewatching this movie after two decades and keeping the criticism in mind, I came away with this - how a movie lands will depend on interpretation. And, choosing to watch a self-directed Babs movie involves accepting that it is to some extent a star vehicle which explores themes important to the artist and delivered in a style that makes sense to her (which may include quirks and features that you may not think work). What Babs wanted to convey here is one thing. I think it can work if interpretated a certain way. That is, yes, we can find ourselves in relationships with others who wish us to be something we are not. Yes, we may wish to get out of those. Yes, there are events that can change our beliefs about ourselves which can lead to extreme changes in our behavior. That is how one can interpret Rose's transformation. Was Babs necessarily recommending such behavior? Not sure. The reality is that Rose was still in love with Gregory, but she had to deliver a message - enough with the theories. I am here, come get me... but I want to be more than you need me to be. I think it also correctly conveys how variables outside the relationship impact what happens in it. The question is, which interpretation was Babs hoping for? I suppose that her body language during the movie may have caused some to interpret things in an anti-Babs way, including some critics. However, the script was very strong in places, and funny. And there were things that made me think. When movie makers are making a movie, they clearly care about audience interpretation and how the movie will land because generally they want to maximize critical and financial reward. Perhaps that is something the makers of this movie could have thought more about. However, at the end of the day, interpretations change as people and society change. In the end, the movie is what it is... it is the audience that will interpret it as they will. If you do not like a movie, you need to question your interpretation as much as the choices of the movie makers.

Love the movie, but the makeover... sad... I loved Rose in the beginning, when she was naturally herself. After that, just copying other women... When you are an original beauty, you do not copy the average, prescribed ''beauty' .He is right. Her authenticity is gone. I would have preferred the ending without the makeover. @@coolbreeze8820 A friend of mine spent the evening at a dinner party with her. She said they "connected" and spent much of the evening chatting (both grew up in Brooklyn). She said she was soft-spoken, warm and funny. I don't know as I've never met her. How is she a hypocrite?
My friend didn't share that same experience. I also don't like how she preaches about how people should make concrete changes in their lifestyle and reduce their carbon footprint when she hasn't done the same. Using private jets, limos, SUVs, and yachts.
