      @@manworksgarage . . . If you have never been screwed over by a mechanic shop you may just not realize it. My 1st diesel was a 1983 6.2 cross over. I had a problem of it only being able to run about 35 mph. Everyone I talked to said it was an injector pump . About a $1500 fix at the time. I knew a lot of people that had been through the same thing and still didn't fix their truck so I went to about 10 different shops until the last one. The guy said people were just ripping people off , He put a new pvc valve in mine , didn't charge me anything . He said come see me when we have a real problem . . . . I got Lucky ! A lot of my friends didn't . I can tell you lots of other stories of friends getting screwed over by mostly dealerships ! Has a new Turbo. New Glow plugs. New fuel pump and filters. New IPR Valve. The mechanic said it was the HPOP which I payed to have fixed and now the truck still won't start. The mech said it started but won't run because he put the wrong HPOP in it. He's nowhere to be found and the truck is in my driveway. Thank you again for your advice. It will not run very well as no power for the first 15 minutes. Fuel is leaking back into the tank. Fuel bowl is empty every morning. And after it sits for an hour the fuel bowl is empty it runs like crap the first 15 minutes. Nothing but problems. Any suggestions? Pretty positive this video is one problem I have. But I still have fuel leaking back in the tank. And the truck has to cool down completely before it will start back up again

It will crank and run fine but most times it takes a 3 or four cycle with the heaters cutting the ignition on and off. It seems to want you to turn cranking and most times it is when you stop the winding it cranks and runs fine. Hope you have the magic.

    6.0: biggest pile of shit I’ve ever owned. I put 300k with no problems on my 96 Cummins. Under 40k miles put on a 2004 6.0 and replaced cam position sensor; icp sensor; ipr; harnesses; 3 glow plugs and both harnesses; a hose I had to take half the engine apart to get to; pulley backed off power steering pump and threw three s belts before mechanic figured it out.

    • @GearHeadsGarageChannel
      @GearHeadsGarageChannel  3 роки тому +2

      Damn you sound late to the party! and comparing a 96 12v Cummins with ANY modern diesel is not a fair comparison lol. As far as reliability goes it will stomp all of them but good luck finding a truck that hasnt fallen apart or doesnt cost way too much for what it is. The more modern diesels will destroy it in comparison though on tunability with power and fuel economy.
      As for your issues though...that sounds like either bad luck or poor workmanship, those arent the typical problems I see on them at all. Either way that is almost 20 years old now, give it a break!

    • @rodgraff1782
      @rodgraff1782 Рік тому

      It’s not the engines fault. Sounds like your mechanic is a parts changer, and not a good troubleshooter. The dealerships are the worst. There are very few mechanics that know this engine. Most just create more problems and just keep throwing parts at them. With proper high pressure oil, good fuel pressure and good FICM, it should start. It has to have cam sync too and crank sync too. Could just be a bad sensor. I’ve heard of the main wiring harness going bad on older trucks also.

    • @jeffreylonigro1382

      @@rodgraff1782 Disagree. It’s one of the worst designed motors...ever. There’s so much to go wrong. Using oil under several thousand psi is idiocy. The oil runs so hot. I could go on for pages.

      @@jeffreylonigro1382 I’ll agree, oil being used as a hydraulic fluid is not healthy. I change mine every 3000 miles and use Schaefer’s, and an two 4 ounce shots of revex. I know this truck is going to leave me on the side of the road at some point. Just hope it doesn’t happen on vacation pulling a 35’ trailer. You are right. There are tons of stuff to go wrong. I don’t know if I would go diesel again. Seems like they all have their problems, especially since they had to go with the particulate filter system.

      Until I shut it off then need starting fluid to fire it back up. I’m at a loss of what to do. I’ve been a mechanic for 40 years but not diesel. I brought it to a diesel shop and he ripped me off like you wouldn’t believe!!!! I broke my back and hip, so I can’t really lay over the core support for very long. ANY info you could recommend would be greatly appreciated. I will also pay you for a walk though onlinePhone etc.. to get this problem resolved! I need my truck running perfectly cause Im heading South wit a loaded trailer pretty soon. Im from NH

    • @GearHeadsGarageChannel
      @GearHeadsGarageChannel  Рік тому +1

      Part of the issue here is assuming you are getting ripped off. I have no idea if the shop you went to is a good shop or not, but no matter what diesel repairs are expensive. The fact that you have been a mechanic for 40 years and cant figure it out should tell you that whoever DOES figure it out is probably going to be worth a pretty penny. Also if you actually are a mechanic then why the hell do you not own a decent scanner? These days there are so many options for affordable powerful scan tools, hell Forscan is free and will do almost anything you need. As for what you are describing, it sounds like a HPOP pressure issue still, but its possible you have an electrical concern with a crank sensor or similar that doesnt work until the engine is at a high enough speed. Either way you have something that is preventing the truck from starting until the engine sees a high enough RPM, most likely still high pressure oil, but you need a scan tool to help find out what is happening. When it comes to repairs at my shop I do not provide diagnostics for people without me performing the repair in most cases, but ESPECIALLY with diesels. The diagnostic process on these often requires disassmbly and if I am not the one that is going to be fixing it, it makes no sense for me to tear it apart. 6.0 No start diags generally run several hundred dollars because of the labor involved, it is still often mostly included/combined with repairs if this is the case but either way that takes the right knowledge, the right tools etc. For what its worth, I work on a lot of diesel trucks and own a shop, I dont even own one because I dont have the need at this time and know how expensive they are. If you tow on occasion and not every day, get a V10 and spend the extra gas money because it is still cheaper.

      @@GearHeadsGarageChannel yeah I had to close my shop a couple years ago.And sold all my heavy equipment, then sold my scanner last year. I got bumped off a roof down in S.C.(I live in N.H.). Couldn’t work so I sold out.
      Last time it did this, I had a bad nipple cup o-ring,right side. Is there a program I can buy for my laptop and a pigtail? And what would be the best one for the buck? I figured it’s such a common problem, I trying to narrow it down, cause it’s extremely hard (and painful) to lay across the core support.
      I appreciate that you got back to me. But like I said iT runs perfectly with a small shot of starting fluid! But I have to do it every time I start it?

      dont know off the top of my head what .24 volts is but .24 doesnt sound like 950. If you can verify you have 950 then you have a problem elsewhere. I mentioned watching for FICM Sync etc as well. Also if it is the 04.5+ or so then try unplugging your icp sensor. An HPOP no start issue will present with less than 500psi, so first make sure your data is correct and if it is then look elsewhere.

    The oil pressure gauge says the pressure is half way at idle, it has no check engine codes, fuel was flowing into the fuel filter bowl. But it starts and runs for 10 seconds to a minutes and shut off. Do you have a educated guess on what the problem could be???????????????

    • @GearHeadsGarageChannel
      @GearHeadsGarageChannel  2 роки тому

      Does it start back up right after shutting off? If not then it shouldnt be difficult to diagnose but you need the right tools. If it is spontaneously stalling and starts back up immediately it may be more difficult to narrow down. If you plan to work on one of these trucks invest in a good scan tool solution and get proper testing equipment. Diagnosing things properly is important and just guessing at things is a very ametuer and foolhardy way to go about things, I cant tell you how many times I have seen that process make things worse and create new problems and cost much more when all is said and done.

Other than that if it is cranking strong then follow what I showed in the video for at least a few clues and possibilities

      By the way...if the check engine light isnt on with the key on there is probably an electrical or communication problem...no CEL while driving is good but get into any car with a key after 1996 or so and turn the key to the "On" position and you will have a light on for the check engine and a few others. If you dont in many cases it might mean your cluster is not seeing the engine computer either turn on or communicate.

      You just gave a list of things you replaced, you didnt give any list at all on what you can confirm the truck is or isnt getting to start. That is the backwards wrong way to think about diagnosing a problem, any problem. Cant tell you how many bad parts I have gotten out of the box, how many wrong repairs I made before I learned and how many times I have to fix things now that other people threw the parts cannon at. Slow down and relax, go back to the basics and figure out what you do and dont have that the engine needs to start. You could have simply even forgotten to plug in the crank sensor, or maybe its somethng else or a bad part you got but no one will know until someone actually goes in and diagnoses it properly, which this video was intended to at least give some help on although it doesnt and never could cover everything.

    Since April, we have spent $6000 on our 2004 super duty 250. High-pressure oil pump they took the cab off to fix that when they brought it back we had to have the park brake brake redone because it wouldn’t shut up it rang all the time then the air conditioner wouldn’t work the four-wheel-drive wouldn’t work then my husbands driving it, And it just quit on a hill. When the guy looked at it he said well your air conditioner compressor is no good and it’s locked the thing up and that’s why it won’t run. My husband believe them so that was the last thing on the $6000. We got it back yesterday and now my husband tells me that it won’t start again that you have to use the wire under the hood to get it to start again. First quit because my husband was pulling a dump trailer full of dirt in April one of the worst months of the year. I told him that that was what he did he shouldn’t have been pulling such a heavy load. Because he got my sons new one to use after that and it quit too. So the guy told him it was his high-pressure oil pump was his problem the reason the truck wouldn’t start after that so the high-pressure oil pump fixed his sons newer one but it didn’t fix ours. What else could it be. Thank you Suzanne Perkins. Ps great video. I’ll have my husband Watch it so he can try to do what you said to do on the top there. But do you have any other suggestions.

      I am sorry this has been such an ordeal for you but it is very hard to diagnose things remotely and I do not have the time sadly. To be honest it sounds like you need a better mechanic, I would hope that they did a LOT more when pulling the cab besides just changing the HPOP because a cab pull is not at all required for that. As for issues after the cab pull like E-brake if they made mistakes that should have been covered and fixed for free

      This video can help point you in the right direction of things to check, if its pumping out black smoke it sounds like the injectors are probably firing. These need to be on a battery jumper usually when opening the HPOP system but it doesn't sound like you guys had to do that with the repairs you listed.

  • @stephenhiggins8744

    i paid one mechanic to do a diagnostic test and he said that needed to change out the HPOP. so I did that, and itbstill wouldn't start. I got a second guy to run another diagnostic test and he said my FICM was the problem. so I changed out the bad board and it was pre programed for my 05 F-350. well, that didn't work either. I'm going to go back to check fluid levels, even though I know I checked them, and even gave the truck all new filters and an oil change. The first thing I did do without testing anything was to change the sensor. now I believe that it will be either the low pressure oil pump, or a possible leak. since I don't have a mechanics scope, I'm going to try a clear fuel line I have been holding on to for my golf cart. if I put one end in an ear and scan around for a leak. my one problem is I think I'll need someone to crank the truck, because I still have the no start problem. without starting, how else would I be able to find a leak?

    • @GearHeadsGarageChannel
      @GearHeadsGarageChannel  2 роки тому +1

      I am sorry the other mechanics diagnosed it wrong but this sounds like a headache with too many hands involved and going scatterbrained in too many different directions. You need to confirm you have good ICP Pressure, confirm the injectors actually are firing, confirm the fuel bowl is full with no bubbles and you have good fuel pressure, confirm crank sensor is working, knock out one thing at a time yourself and go down the list or hand it off to someone that will figure it out without you doing the work. If someone came to my shop and I told them what I found and then they took it and did the repair there is so much potential for things to get missed that I may know to check for and you dont or mistakes may get made etc. Good luck and hope you solve your issue

    • @GearHeadsGarageChannel
      @GearHeadsGarageChannel  2 роки тому +2

      You are going about this wrong, between your key and the starter there are other components involved that need to send that signal. With a test light or multimeter you can test everything necessary. First off, when you turn the key to the crank position is the ignition switch actually sending that signal? if so it still has a couple safeties to go through first, one thing would be your neutral safety switch. Does it crank if you pop it in neutral but not park? Can you watch it happen with the multimeter or test light? Past this it could be computer issues but with the right knowledge and testing even this can be diagnosed with basic tools.
      Long story short, your starter has two powers going to it, the constant 12v from the battery to the motor(the thicker gauge wire) and the starter solenoid control wire. If you are not getting 12 volts or so to the solenoid wire then the problem is upstream from there. Whether it is worth your time to figure out or pay someone else is up to you.
      Btw 6.0's have a wire near the passenger battery that can be jumped to crank the engine and if they key is in the on position it will start.

    • @mikegagnon4007

      I will see if I can find that wire. At least if I can get it started that way I can get it to a mechanic
