Some advice that I have found really help. If you let the HFCM drain completely through the water in fuel plug you don't get a bath when removing the filter cap. A nice long extension to get past the transmission skid plate helps too. And if you can avoid it don't use the 1/2 drive part of the upper cap, they will break very easily. 👍

Thinking about all the $$$ this is going to probably cost. As I was asking God Almighty what is happening, he told me to search the internet and there your video showed up and at the very end was my answer. Glory to God, brother. @@joel.ha. After installing the bottom filter, without starting the truck, I cycled the ignition 3 times to let the filter prime and it cranked right up.

Got some bad fuel in my truck. Water in fuel light came on. Drained the hfcm at the Allen plug. Had a spare set of filters handy but draining it fixed the light. Was able to run it till the next oil change. About another 3000km. Fuel filters from Ford in my area are 185$. So it's nice to save some money. Not a bad idea to drain it a time or two in-between oil changes just for piece of mind
Great video. Rags on rail.I use a large cat litter box to catch the fuel.Wear old work clothes. Get the right tool.I hate the plastic cap and the sound it makes going on and off.Easy job.Probally done this job 25 times. 332500on the old 03 6.0 350. Clean inside and out and running great. I don't listen to anyone who says the 6.0 is junk.Maintain it and it will love you.

I will up grade to a high output alternator, blue spring fuel pressure kit, coolant and oil filtration system first. Excellent run through. However I did notice that your clients truck had the dreaded aftermarket oil filter on it. Guessing a Dorman. That's the same style a shop put on mine and all I had were issues. Put the factory Ford filter and cap back on and zero issues. From what I've seen the fuel filters and caps are the same from Ford and Dorman etc. With the exception of the line up tab you mentioned.
I've been chasing a problem with a really whiney fuel filter and hfcm and I have not heard this info abouy the bleed valve in the filters. Very good info amd I'm gonna check on that asap. Thanks for the vid guys!
So I was gonna order that snap on socket, $46, which I can live with. But $22 for shipping on top of that. After tax the total would be $72. Just going to buy 2 separate sockets lol. Great video. This was super helpful.
I am doing maintenance on a newly purchased 6.0... having hard time cold starting. Once she starts for the day, she ran perfectly... till today. Started cutting out, like running out of fuel... for bout half hour. Now she running like a clock again.
Appreciate the time and efforts to put this tutorial together. I never knew about the Tab for the Weep Hole nor about the final location of the weep hole. I can honestly say I have never done the fuel filters on my F350 6.0, Yeah My bad! We have been dealing with some extreme cold up here (-45 C and colder) and my diesel has gelled so I need to remove the filters, and replace them as well as using some Winter Rescue to un-gel the fuel. I was just going to go and do it but thought I would see what UA-cam had to offer as a walk thru. Glad I did. A question though, how often should fuel filters be changed in the 6.0? Thanks again
THANKS - Finished! 03 6.0 Project time 2hr total - procured sockets and filters from store, drain, clean, refit, pressurize, inspect, start. Upon removal of top filter, found an extra "O" ring attached (2) two attached, rolled them both off and replaced with one. Used K&N filters, they did not have a tab near weep-hole fyi. Used a paint tray with an old liner that worked real well to capture evacuating fuel, as I have break lines and other lines that impede an even flow from the conditioning module nut and you may need to guide the pan with agility from its initial flow to when it just droplets every few seconds. I opted to let the conditioning module completely empty, removing the cap for the bottom filter had very little residual fuel that dropped so it seems to be the way to go. Did this on my back in the driveway just fine. Total project cost filter and sockets approx $100.000 not including my labor costs.
There was a missing screw on the lower right of the water separator housing cover. Also, the Oil Filter cap installed on your truck is not the correct one. The taller one on that truck will not allow the filter housing to retain oil when the truck is turned off. Just a few observation. Thanks for the video.
I thought the same thing about the oil filter cap with all the fuss over using oem parts and the problems with those caps why make the video before changing that cap out
@@davidcarlucci7296 100% good video. Last year I had to replace the water separator / fuel drain plus. Mine rusted out. I went to Ford where they have a brass one now. Also is knurled for finger usage, no longer needs a hex wrench.

I went to drain and relieve pressure and the drain plug would move with just my finger. It won't back out or tighten up. Someone must have broken the head off the bolt? Changed both filters and the drain plug is still loose but nothing leaks. Thank you for this very informative video and snap on, give him some money ☺
I just replaced mine. I did it like you did placing the filter in the housing and roatating the till the tab stopped. Then install cap. Later i was worried if its possible the tabs on the filter might not line up correctly with the recess in the cap. I had no trouble putting the cap on but i dont know why it bugs me what if it didnt line up? The filter does fit snug on the pump so it should line up and the old filter doesn't come out with the cap so it must be a loose fit. Thanks for the video. PS i have the official brass drain valve that drains the water seperator portion of the HFCM. Mine had no water. I was investigating why i had an injector tip crack last summer . I was hoping it was air in the fuel due to wrong filter but it had a OEM filter and was installed correctly and the filter was clean. My truck only had 50K kms 30K miles so a busted injector made me sad. 😢
Ive changed the fuel filters on my truck probably 10 times so far. But this last time I did it, the truck is now super sluggish and slow on acceleration. I’m thinking maybe one of the caps isn’t tightened all the way and letting air in so I’ll have to check it out.
I did this on my 04, because it started intermittently galloping at low idle. When i removed the filter, it looked like it had been collapsing and old. It seems to have cured it, I hope. Appreciate the heads up about the weep hole.

I didnt know about the wheep hole and have been doing wrong by just snapping it in the cap and srewing it all the way back in what issues would this cause
Great video thanks! How important is the little notch keeping the weep hole upright? I have been getting the same part number at Oreilly and it has a weep hole but no notch to hold it...I'm changing my every 5k which is way under recommended I know...Just started having real problems though. No power and cant climb hills at all. It was acting like the engine wasn't getting enough fuel...after 2 new pumps and dropping the tank and replacing broken boot, it's still not happy. 03 f250 6.0 stock.
Run seafoam through it 3/4 can in the top filter and 1 in the tank that help you i think clean the injectors when you put one it the top filter im no pro but I listen well .
As soon as I get that napa socket I'm running seafoam again I did it without doing the filter worked like a new 6.0 off the lot but truck is sputtering a bit again so I just got the new filters .
So on the conditioning module the screw to bleed the water, mine was a blot, loosened up but now it doesn’t get tight. Do you know maybe what would cause this? Respectfully, Thomas
Man, I wish I had found this video sooner, how important is the orientation of that weep hole? I bought a set of motorcraft filters and o-rings, but the instructions just said to reinstall the filter element into the cap and just put the cap back into the housing. I hope this doesn't cause an issue.
If you notice he turns the filter to the left (counterclockwise) with the locating nub up to start with, and then rotates it clockwise until it hits the stop that locates it. So if you put the filter in the cap and install it, it rotates clockwise with the cap until it gets far enough in to start hitting the stop, and that locates it. that is the standard way to install the new filter. So don't worry, your filter is oriented correctly. The risk is if you get one of the aftermarket filters that doesn't have the nub on it.
I noticed when you removed the original fuel filter on top of the engine, the fuel filter was black and looked like the filter had twisted because the fins didn’t look straight up and down on the filter is this normal?
No, not normal but it's not out of the ordinary either. We had just bought this truck and later found out that the previous owner like to run used motor oil through with his fuel (DO NOT DO THIS).
Just replaced my filters (not my first time on a 6.0) and for some strange reason it isn't priming as fast as it did before, I have to prime the fuel for 5-10 seconds now to get it to start. I've already replaced the upper cap as the previous one looked like it was slightly cracked by the previous owner using the drive hole to loosen and tighten it, still hasn't fixed the problem. I don't see any fuel leaking out the caps so not sure where to go next without throwing hundreds of dollars at it.
Had issue today on my 6.0l f350, it made and hour and a half drive from indiana into ohio, stopped a couple times once to eat and another at a flea market, went to leave flea market, engine went to basically a low rpm and throttle pedal didn't do anything no revving nothing it's limped a couple hundred feet then died. Now if I go to start it it's just cranks and the longer I crank the faster the engine spins but wont start. Seems like a fuel delivery issue to me but I'm new to the 6.0 life. Any help or suggestions on where to start is greatly appreciated

That’s a good question that I don’t know the answer to. I would assume that with todays OE fuel filter setups and the filter media that is needed to get the filtration up for common rail fuel systems is a added cost, then the different configuration than just a normal spin on filter is another consideration.
I have a 2003 Ford Powerstroke 6.0L truck. When I turned the water drain plug on the fuel conditioner it just turns does not back out or drain at all & does not tighten back down. I have not opened the filter cap yet do I need to replace the drain plug if so where can I get one?
Why do so many mechanics in dealerships charge about 250 to $300 just to change the fuel? It looks fairly easy it was only a hundred and fifty for my oil
Ford has an indestructible transmission, better body, better features. Dodge trucks with cummins are only good because of the motor, everything else is trash.
That really sucks, I hate to hear that. The first thing I thought of was trying to move it with a strap wrench. You can get strap wrenches that actually attach to a ratchet that are very handy. Good luck.

Thats a good looking truck for a shop truck...
If you have a truck with a 6.0 Jack it up and roll the tires under another truck. That's the best way to service it.
Good video, from a hack mech. I would suggest removing the oil dip stick. I broke mine while resling around on top of the motor.
it locates it's self. you do not need to worry how you put the filter in. just make sure you buy oem
How often do you recommend changing these filters?
Every other oil change. Which is overkill but filters are cheap insurance.

I haven’t seen a difference either way. I do the frame mounted first so that I can get that mess out of the way faster is the only reason.

I would think someone shoved that bolt in there and stripped out the conditioning module. It would need to be replaced if stripped.

How do you actuate the lift pump at the end? Are you just putting the key in the on position without turning the truck on?
Key needs to be in the run position to actuate the lift pump.

Good question, I don’t know of a reason that you couldn’t. With them amount of fuel that comes out of that hole it should be good to go.
I noticed when you removed the original fuel filter on top of the engine, the fuel filter was black and looked like the filter had twisted because the fins didn’t look straight up and down on the filter is this normal?
No, not normal but it's not out of the ordinary either. We had just bought this truck and later found out that the previous owner like to run used motor oil through with his fuel (DO NOT DO THIS).
What is your thoughts on filling the fuel bowl with SeaFoam to clean the injectors when you do this?

The weep hole, we talk about that here, the filter canister doesn’t fill properly.
How often should you change the fuel filters under normal conditions
Normal interval is every 15000 miles.

Just replaced my filters (not my first time on a 6.0) and for some strange reason it isn't priming as fast as it did before, I have to prime the fuel for 5-10 seconds now to get it to start. I've already replaced the upper cap as the previous one looked like it was slightly cracked by the previous owner using the drive hole to loosen and tighten it, still hasn't fixed the problem. I don't see any fuel leaking out the caps so not sure where to go next without throwing hundreds of dollars at it.

Had issue today on my 6.0l f350, it made and hour and a half drive from indiana into ohio, stopped a couple times once to eat and another at a flea market, went to leave flea market, engine went to basically a low rpm and throttle pedal didn't do anything no revving nothing it's limped a couple hundred feet then died. Now if I go to start it it's just cranks and the longer I crank the faster the engine spins but wont start. Seems like a fuel delivery issue to me but I'm new to the 6.0 life. Any help or suggestions on where to start is greatly appreciated

Just drain all the fluid from the plug and nothing will drain from the back

Why are fuel filters so much more costly than oil filters?
That’s a good question that I don’t know the answer to. I would assume that with todays OE fuel filter setups and the filter media that is needed to get the filtration up for common rail fuel systems is a added cost, then the different configuration than just a normal spin on filter is another consideration.
The FD 4604 is suppose to be a better filter than the 4616
Out of curiosity how big is the weep hole?
I never measured it, it is pretty small.

I have a 2003 Ford Powerstroke 6.0L truck. When I turned the water drain plug on the fuel conditioner it just turns does not back out or drain at all & does not tighten back down. I have not opened the filter cap yet do I need to replace the drain plug if so where can I get one?
Why do so many mechanics in dealerships charge about 250 to $300 just to change the fuel? It looks fairly easy it was only a hundred and fifty for my oil

Check glow plugs. If it will start well after being plugged in, suspect glow plugs.
I’m debating on getting either an 03 Ford F-250 or a 06 dodge 2500 5.9 anyone have some pros and cons for both trucks ?
Ford has an indestructible transmission, better body, better features. Dodge trucks with cummins are only good because of the motor, everything else is trash.

Truck started then stalled now it won’t start. Has full power, it cranks, but won’t turn over. Any ideas?
HEUI is hard to diagnose without a scanner. Need to know codes first, then oil pressure while cranking, fuel pressure, etc.

That really sucks, I hate to hear that. The first thing I thought of was trying to move it with a strap wrench. You can get strap wrenches that actually attach to a ratchet that are very handy. Good luck.
