    I interviewed Steve Cardellini a few years back. From my notes, he said the main functional difference is that the main body of Cardellini is made using the sand casting process, making them somewhat stronger.

    When I started in films, I only knew the Manfrotto Superclamp. I used it for everything.
    But like with every new tool you get, you get used to its advantages and suddenly, you can`t live without it.
    Today, I have a big variation of Matthellini and Cardellelini Clamps and use them on every set excessively.
    I rarely use Superclamps anymore. 95% of what a Superclamp can do, a Cardellini can do better.

    There's another reason: If something gets genericised it can lose it's trademark.
    IE: Escalator WAS a name brand. But as all moving stairs were referred to as escalators, eventually the name was genericised and lost it's trademark.

    Wow I had no idea that Matthews paid Cardellini residuals. Makes me even happier to buy Matthews products.

    The difference between the two is just Chrome vs stainless steel - Cardellini's cost more than Matthellini's because they are more durable and last longer. They agreed to segment the market, allowing Steve Cardellini to keep his business relatively small and contained, sort of an upscale boutique thing, while Matthews does the mass production.

    The Cardellini has a tighter bezel so it doesn't get int the way when tightening. I prefer it. The Hurst Shifter design of the Mathellini is better for butter-armed Grips cuz more torque to tighten. I find them to bind more, though. Side note: Linda Cardellini is the niece of Steve and signed a bunch of our Cardellinis but WOULD NOT sign any Mathellinis. Cardellinis, in my market anyway, virtually replaced the Maffer because Cardellinis go on straight. The Maffer always goes on angle, because of the nature of the clamp. It's very similar to a closing fist. Like any piece of Grip gear, the Maffer is obsolete....until it's suddenly the only thing that will do the job.

    This clamp is my Swiss Army knife of most small rigging situations.

    Just to add to the mafer point: mafers have an insert that allows for clamping on flat surfaces (and it works pretty well), it’s just easy to knock off the mafer and lose it.

    Maffer had a small pieces that goes in the grove of the clamp
    that make it works on flat to use on flat surfaces

      You beat me to the punch. Yes the insert is very helpful and changes the mafer drastically when clamping to to tables and anything flat on both sides.

    • @olivermuff3375
      @olivermuff3375 3 роки тому

      @@outbackatl still, you loose this bit all the time, and even when you use it, you clamp it with a very small section of the jaw, which leaves marks and does not hold as well as a cardellini. Also, I can use the cardellini on a surface as thin as a sheet of paper, but also on a foot thick wall... try to do this with a mafer clamp.
