Just happened across this video and thought I'd share for your viewers that I did the exact same thing with my Savage Mark II. It only takes up to 5 light even drags across the file. Feel how the extractor feels beforehand against the rim of a 22 case and after a few light file drags, feel it again. It's a very obvious difference and that's all it takes to fix the extraction issue.
Are we sure we're not just removing some caked on dirt instead of metal? I ask this because I hear some people say they have the issue and it goes away after a cleaning.
@@azr2d1 I can promise you my example had no carbon buildup on the extractor. That's not to say some folks may improve the performance of theirs if dirty.
In most cases re-angling the "hook" of the exractor is not needed ( although it's a good idea)......another fix that is easier to do is to increase the pressure of the extractor spring ( by removing it / giving it a "squeeze" / and re-installing it)....or doubling-up on the extractor spring, one placed over the other. Done.
I bought a used 22 LR Savage two years ago and was having extraction problems. I was looking at the bolt face, extractor and ejector closely for quite a while before it dawned on me that the previous owner had done two things. They apparently had taken the extractor/ejector assembly apart when trying to troubleshoot it and put it back together with the extractor and ejector reversed. Also the spring clip was a bit distorted outward. I ordered a new clip from Savage (They sent two, bless them). I also honed both sides of the extractor and ejector to remove any burrs. And I thoroughly cleaned the slots the extractor and ejector are mounted in. Put it all back together and it works fine.
Your video really helped. I had a bad extraction problem. Got to looking and saw that whoever worked on this before I got it put the clip on backwards. The notches were facing forward. Turned that over and now it works like a champ! Thanks again.
I had the same issue with my (used) B22 precision and CCI standard ammo. Savage sent me a new extractor, ejector and spring at no charge. The extractor was allot sharper than the original and the spring seems beefier. . After install of those parts, the gun still doesn't care for CCI std but will run just about anything else. Shoots great. Smooooth action! (No bullet scraping.)
I just picked up that same rifle. Oddly, CCI standard Velocity is the only ammo that the gun extracts 100%. Several other brands give me up to 30% failure to extract/eject. Guess it's time to sharpen the extractor and polish the ejector. Beyond this, I LOVE the rifle. Very Smooth, Very Accurate. Great trigger. Thanks for shareing.
Yeah the extraction is really the only downside to Savage rimfire rifles. To date I've only had one MKII that I've not had to do this mod to. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for you video, I have extraction issues (0% of casing extracted), and while removing the spring, I notice it was monted in the wrong direction. So the space between claws was too small. Now it extract perfectly. Regards from France
I had this happen on the first day at the range. Very frustrating. I thought it was a temperature issue (28 degrees, snow expected that day). Took it to the indoor range the next day and no issue. I’m going to check this out though to avoid any future issues. Glad I’m not the only one who experienced this and THANK YOU for posting this suggestion/video.
I had the extraction problem with my Savage and especially with Aguila ammo. Watching these videos (yours and others) something struck me. If the hook is not engaging the cartridge rim, any material removed from the hook only makes the problem worse. With that in mind, when I removed the extractor I filed down the edge of the extractor where it sits in the bolt body groove. My reasoning was if you bring the extractor closer to the rim of the cartridge, the extractor problem should be corrected. In an interesting discovery, there was a tiny piece of clear plastic that came out with the extractor when I eased the retaining spring away from it. That may have been part of the problem.
My friend doubled up on springs, never had an issue since. some light filing to get the second spring to fit. Waiting on savage to get back to me about my issue
Thank you for posting had this issue last time at the range with my Mark II - rifle has 5,300 rounds through it - gonna take a look at my extractor and do the fix - 👍 as always
Very good video, however this didn’t solve my problem. What I did was order another spring clip from Savage and doubled them up. The second one is a bear to get on but it WILL go. Once done I’ve not had any more problems !
yes but temporary, the problem isn't the extractor per se. The problem isn't that the extractor isn't grabbing the rim. The problem is that instead of pulling the rim and extracting, the spring clip isn't providing the correct amount of force on the extractor, so instead of pulling the case out, the extractor is spreading out and slipping off the rim because of not having enough force exerted on it by the spring.
I’ve recently got my mk2 I’ve heard of this problem but I have yet to have any issues, granit I’m running federal holipoints not cci so that may help. About 400 rounds through, flawless and accurate.
Tengo uno igual y no e tenido problemas con la extracción. Si con la alimentación, pero fue fácil de solucionar...hay que ajustar la rampa contra la recamara y apretar el tornillo que también es el que ajusta la plataforma
Thanks! Have the same problem on my Mark II Fv-sr. Will try this. Worked great when I first got it, then all of sudden quit extracting. My pinky is pretty cut up. LOL
I did everything to fix extraction problems, then I considered the ammo. Factory ammo that has a lot of wax on it causes this problem. CCI ammo does not extract well in these guns. If you take a rag and wipe off the excess wax, it 100% fixes extraction problems.
Thought that I would share. I had this issue, all I did was remove the spring that holds the extractor/ejector and lightly squeeze it to make it tighter and reinstalled, went from having to self extract every other round to extracting and ejecting like normal!
That on the right is not an ejector. The ejector is like a little fin that is attached to the receiver, not the bolt. Both of those are extractors on the bolt face. The ejector rides through a cutout on the bottom right hand side of the bolt, and kicks the casing out.
Yeah I totally spaced on taking a before and after pic... But it was very minimal filing. I basically only removed the bluing on it and just put a slight point to the extractor. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the post, put 1500-2000 rounds through mine without issue until just recently….. I’m going to go ahead and do the same thing and see if it fixes the issue
Look at you...all elite with your UNLIMITED .22LR ammo...lol. JP, Man. Excellent fix on your own, Brother. Makes me want to go out and do some .22LR plinking as well. Take care.
Good video. I think I am going to contact savage and see if they will send another extractor and still do your mod. As soon as mine would stop extracting I would clean the chamber and it would be ok. I thought the suppressor was causing the chamber to get dirty. Thanks and have a good one from west Tennessee
Thank you so much for posting! Bought a Savage Mark II Cal.22 L.R. about 15 years ago. Magnificently accurate! But, I get the [lack of] extraction issue every time I go out to the range. Starts after 20 rounds or so and just gets worse. The inside of my chamber is all scratched up from me digging brass out with my pocket knife. Will try this fix and report back.
@@TheHide I reviewed several videos, the comments on those videos, and a number of blogs with suggestions on how to improve the functioning of the Savage Arms Mark II .22 LR extractor (and B22). There does not seem to be one overriding issue. Rather a number of factors accumulate to reduce the grip the extractor gets on the rim of the spent shell. All the following suggestions simply improve the extractor's ability to catch and hold the rim and pull the brass from the chamber. All can be implemented. None are mutually exclusive. I did all but item V. I have since fired 51 rounds of Federal ammunition without issue. Previously, the issue occurred long before this. I) SHARPEN EXTRACTOR: METHOD 1, UNDERNEATH. (DESCRIBED IN "The Hide's" VIDEO) -File (black) extractor sharper by filing the underneath side of the "hook" on the extractor. Just a few strokes with a triangular file. II) SHARPEN EXTRACTOR: METHOD 2, TOP. 1) Place extractor in vice to stabilize it. This makes your filing strokes consistent. 2) Run a file over the sloped top of the extractor hook, making certain not to change the angle of the surface. 3) Only 3 to 5 strokes necessary. 4) Primary intent is only to re-establish the surface to be a straight line. 5) This causes the extractor to move more correctly over the cone. 6) The cone guides the extractor to the brass so that its hook properly catches shell rim as the bolt is retracted. III) DISASEMBLE BOLT AND CLEAN INDIVIDUAL PARTS (deep cleaning). 1) Extractor, Ejector, Firing Pin: -Remove extractor(black), ejector(silver), and firing pin. -Clean all 3 as well as bolt with cleaning solution and tooth brush. 2) CLEANING EXTRACTOR / EJECTOR SLOTS IN BOLT: -Spray the slots with an aerosol automotive throttle body cleaner. -Blow any remaining residue out with compressed air. -Oil only very lightly or lubricate with graphite. IV) GRIND SIDES OF EXTRACTOR / EJECTOR 1) The extractor and ejector should move as freely as possible within the grooves of the bolt. 2) Toward this end, the flat sides of the extractor and ejector should be ground smooth with a sharpening stone such as you might use on a pocket knife. 3) Oil your sharpening stone then rub each flat side of the ejector and extractor back and forth rapidly on the stone until it is smooth. It is not necessary to do this for long or to remove much material. Some paint may be removed. But not all. V) IMPROVE SPRING TENSION - METHOD 1: 1) Purchase a second spring clip to place over the existing one that holds the ejector, extractor, and firing pin in their grooves on the bolt. 2) The notches in the second spring will likely not align properly with the extractor and ejector. This is okay. It will stay in place. And it will place additional pressure on the extractor against the casing as it is pulling it out by the rim. VI) IMPROVE SPRING TENSION - METHOD 2: 1) Scrunch the spring (C shaped clip that holds in the firing pin, extractor, and ejector) to bend it to a smaller, tighter "C" shape, increasing the tension it applies to the extractor and ejector. 2) Use proper reassembly method to retains the spring's tension. 3) Improper reassembly procedure can bend the spring back and reduce the tension it applies to the extractor and ejector. Less tension against the extractor reduces its purchase on the rim of the spent shell. I am having this exact same issue even down to the ammo. Gonna try this fix for sure. What bolt knob do you have? I can't find anything for b22 bolt knobs. They all come up as savage 110
I had to do a similar thing to an Anschutz MPR. The 64 series rifles had extraction issues. I wonder what changed with the bolt as I had a Savage that was bought new in 2012 that never had extraction issues.I never shot CCI SV in my Savage so I wonder if the ammo was the issue.
Awesome video and it fixed my issue so thank you very much! Was wondering what you torque your action screws to and if you pillar bedded or anything to achieve those sweet groups.
I torqued them to 30 In lbs and there is no pillar bedding as this is an aluminum chassis rifle. Rifle is bone stock only thing I did special was weigh out the ammo into groups other than that its how it came from the factory. Thanks for watching!
Thanks guy. I will try it as the MK II I have will eject all .22 casings BUT the Aguilas. Now, do you have an easy way to polish the sear (or such) and reduce the lbs of pull on the non adjustable trigger model. Mine is pretty heavy for this 70 yr old man. Thanks for any help. .......... the mike
My extractor has a chip out of it so I need a new one upon closer examination. I was shooting different kinds of ammo with no problem then loaded and shot an aguila round and it hung up in the chamber. Picked out the casing and tried another and it hung up also. Went back to the other ammo and they all hung up. Pulling the bolt and looking at it (extractor), it has a tiny chip on the tip missing so where do you suggest I look for a new one. Thanks. ............ the mike@@TheHide
good info. after you file the extractor just line the groove up with the notch in spring pisc and slide the extractor in the groove till it clicks into place, that way you dont over stretch the sping out.
So after several cleanings and doing the tricks here my Savage Mark 2 just kept having extraction problems so I sold it and bought a beautiful and reasonably priced CZ 527 in .223 REM. OMG what a nice rifle, glad I dumped that particular Savage.
extraction issue is fixable, thx for that! the “bullet scraping” has me very concerned… i so want to pick one of these up but, sofar the scraping issue doesn’t seem to have a “fix”? anyone have a newer model? fixed? i’ve seen posts about the mag sitting cockeyed… causing the issue. fix is to fix drill, tap, install a screw in the magwell… definitely don’t want to do that!!! i would hope by now Savage has sorted this out…
Hello I have a new model, Made on Feb 2023, no extraction problem at all, and no bullet scraping issues, for the moment ;) ( RWS and ELEY ammunitions )
I've got an old Mk11, and over time the bullet scraping got worse and worse. Eventually I pulled the gun apart, and re-bent the mag retainer spring. Took a few tries to get it right, but now it holds the mag a bit higher, and tighter, which angles the bullets more upwards. Feeds much better, IMO, if you can feel any play in the mag when its snapped in, tweaking that spring is likely worthwhile.
I have this issue on my mkII. What is savage's response when you tell them this ? My rifle is maybe a year old and probably has less than 200 rounds thru it. First the stock cracked and they send me a new stock. now this.
Im not really sure of their response. I just took care of it myself as I didnt want to deal with sending the rifle back and waiting. Im sure they would take care of it, their customer service is pretty good. But at this point Im not sure why its still an issue for them.. Thanks for watching!
Ill be honest I haven't bought a MKII in a while so Im not sure if they've addressed this or not. But I'm really hoping they have. Its gone on way longer than it should have...
@@TheHide That’s the only reason that prevents me with going with the Savage. I like the MDT chassis but The Ruger is only $100 less and I can always upgrade the chassis. 🤷♂️
I have had this problem on my mkII. It seems that 22 case is sticking hard in the chamber. When the extractor slips, I have to use a different approach. Using a pocket knife, it takes effort to pry the case out of the chamber. Not sure why the case is so tight in the chamber.
Mine was hard to get out too, it's because with a pocket knife, you are only pulling one side of the casing instead of both like the extractor is supposed to do, so it puts pressure on one side, making it seem tighter.
No doubt a good rifle BUT, after reading so many reviews regarding the same issue i went with the Ruger version. Im not a competative shooter so the miniscule difference in accuracy doesnt matter. Couldnt justify a more expensive rifle that requires additional fixes just to function reliably. Savage fixes these issues then id buy one. Just my way of thinking.
@@TheHide I have a mark ii and it extracts just fine, but it doesn't eject. I can't even find detailed information on exactly how the ejection is supposed to work. The parts diagram doesn't even list an ejector. I have an idea that it's a combination of the extractor + cartridge guide pulling the round backwards until the rim of the cartridge comes into contact with the bolt guide, but I'm not 100% sure if that is the design, because the rim doesn't contact the bolt guide - at least in my mark ii - it's just barely going over the top of it.
Shame on Savage, it be the first and last rifle I own from that company. The feeding issues are also a constant irritant, so far they have failed to respond to their customers.

1) Extractor, Ejector, Firing Pin:
-Remove extractor(black), ejector(silver), and firing pin.
-Clean all 3 as well as bolt with cleaning solution and tooth brush.
2) CLEANING EXTRACTOR / EJECTOR SLOTS IN BOLT:
-Spray the slots with an aerosol automotive throttle body cleaner.
-Blow any remaining residue out with compressed air.
-Oil only very lightly or lubricate with graphite.
IV) GRIND SIDES OF EXTRACTOR / EJECTOR
1) The extractor and ejector should move as freely as possible within the grooves of the bolt.
V) IMPROVE SPRING TENSION - METHOD 1:

2) The notches in the second spring will likely not align properly with the extractor and ejector. This is okay. It will stay in place. And it will place additional pressure on the extractor against the casing as it is pulling it out by the rim.
VI) IMPROVE SPRING TENSION - METHOD 2:
1) Scrunch the spring (C shaped clip that holds in the firing pin, extractor, and ejector) to bend it to a smaller, tighter "C" shape, increasing the tension it applies to the extractor and ejector.
2) Use proper reassembly method to retains the spring's tension.
3) Improper reassembly procedure can bend the spring back and reduce the tension it applies to the extractor and ejector. Less tension against the extractor reduces its purchase on the rim of the spent shell.

A few years late, but will the extractor pull out an unfired/misfire rounds?
Ive not had any issues. Thanks for watching
Have you considered sending it back?
My brand new Savage, less than 300 rounds, will not extract unfired rounds. It will extract spent casings tho. Any ideals, will this fix that also ?
Do you have a suppressor on that rifle? Thx for the vid.
Yes I do and AAC Prodigy. Thanks for watching..
good info. after you file the extractor just line the groove up with the notch in spring pisc and slide the extractor in the groove till it clicks into place, that way you dont over stretch the sping out.
This fix hold up even years later? My new Mark two is doing the same thing with CCI.
The guy that bought this rifle from me still shoots it regularly so id say so far so good.. Thanks for watching
@@TheHidegood to know. Thanks. Did you upgrade to a cz 457 pro varmint?
So after several cleanings and doing the tricks here my Savage Mark 2 just kept having extraction problems so I sold it and bought a beautiful and reasonably priced CZ 527 in .223 REM.
OMG what a nice rifle, glad I dumped that particular Savage.
What stock is that? Looks great
Looks like the stock mdt chassis that it comes with. Looks just like mine.
My b17 started this after 70round finna try this
Hope it helps.. Thanks for watching.
I’ve had to do minor repairs like that on several of my guns. Even a custom I bought had issues.
You sharpen the extractor like he says. THEN you add a 2nd retaining spring. Dremel the notch slightly...All ammo Problems solved.
extraction issue is fixable, thx for that! the “bullet scraping” has me very concerned… i so want to pick one of these up but, sofar the scraping issue doesn’t seem to have a “fix”? anyone have a newer model? fixed? i’ve seen posts about the mag sitting cockeyed… causing the issue. fix is to fix drill, tap, install a screw in the magwell… definitely don’t want to do that!!! i would hope by now Savage has sorted this out…
Hello I have a new model, Made on Feb 2023, no extraction problem at all, and no bullet scraping issues, for the moment ;) ( RWS and ELEY ammunitions )
Awsome thank you!
No problem!
@@TheHide Agree, the service is outstanding. I've had to replace a cracked stock and they only needed the serial number to send me a new one.
Has Savage fixed the issue with current builds?
Ill be honest I haven't bought a MKII in a while so Im not sure if they've addressed this or not. But I'm really hoping they have. Its gone on way longer than it should have...
@@TheHide That’s the only reason that prevents me with going with the Savage. I like the MDT chassis but The Ruger is only $100 less and I can always upgrade the chassis. 🤷♂️
@@caliveteranOIF Dont blame ya there...
@@TheHide Sir thank you for your time and video was fantastic.
@@caliveteranOIF Appreciate ya watching!!
I have had this problem on my mkII. It seems that 22 case is sticking hard in the chamber. When the extractor slips, I have to use a different approach. Using a pocket knife, it takes effort to pry the case out of the chamber. Not sure why the case is so tight in the chamber.
Might need to clean your chamber out. Might have some lead fouling causing the case to stick.
Definitely got to go with what fits your needs best. Thanks for watching!!
Any updates on how this held up long term?
Still working perfectly, Had it out this morning shooting it. Thanks for watching!
Is it still OK?
Yup, hasnt missed a beat since.. Thanks for watching!
Would love to know how it holds up cause if it fails to eject in mine again
ill probably be doing the same thing to mine 😁 hahaha
Subbed....
Well I got about 200rds through it now.. So far so good, I will do an update video once I get closer to the 1k round mark. Thanks for the sub!!!!
I fixed the problem with my extractor on my savage
I sold the gun bought a ruger American
Problem solved
Gotta do what's best for you. Thanks for watching
Returned mine to Savage twice. Apparently, no one at the factory watches your channel.
As much as I like Savage rifles it kills me this is even still an issue with their guns.. I dont get it.. Thanks for watching!
