Thank you for the great solution. The spring mechanism stem snapped off at the bottom. I had already pulled most of it apart before finding your video. Stuck at trying to remove the drain plug outer as I did not want to damage the basin. I knew the waste plug outer was held in with silicone as I watched the plumber install the new basin about 5 years ago. Unscrewed the centre stem and took bits to local plumbing supplies. Replacement was $6.95 - Great Relief!

This video helped me also. The spring mechanism snapped off also at the base, which made it difficult to get purchase on the remaining stem to unscrew it. After seeing this video I went bought some new pliers and a new spring mechanism and after applying the technique, out it came and from there it was straight forward. Thank you for this posting.

Hi, The spring-loaded waste plug in our bathroom wasn't responding to WD40 anymore, so I said to my wife, "We need a plumber" and she said to me "I'll google it." And rather like Howard, who left the previous message, I find myself listening to a guy in Hawthorn, South Australia! Great video, fixed the waste and it's been working fine ever since. Thank you - couldn't be clearer - no-one ever told me about regular maintenance of this thing! My one's springloaded core doesn't seem to unscrew but has an inaccessible grub screw in the side. Nonetheless I managed to free it with a bit of gentle tapping with pliers (which you probably wouldn't recommend), and I'll now try and oil it.

It's safe to unscrew the PVC P-trap, to clear a blockage, but not to unscrew the tailpipe from the bottom of the sink, which is where the damage would occur.
Thanks! If anyone else's plug is stuck - just remove the mechanism like he does in the video, spray it with WD40, then put it in a vice and pull up with a pair of pliers. Worked perfectly for me
Thanks for this solution. Was able to unscrew the cap and clean my clogged sink my kids messed with. A simple anticlockwise movement did the trick and saved me the hassle of nearly getting a plumber that would've charge a bomb for this. Mine wasn't so much of a problem with the spring action. The rest was easy to clean.

Pretty sure mine will be from Screwfix here in the UK as the contractor who did it for the previous tenant bought items from there as cheap as possible, it seems. Will have a look. Thanks
I went to using these thinking they would be less of a problem then the older style with the push pull open close. Boy was i wrong. I have taken these spring mechanisms completety apart and and greased them with faucet/valve grease to no avail. They still get stuck closed after about 10 days. I will likely move back to what i once had...
Hello William, Yes depending on water quality etc these mechanism’s can very challenging! They have since come up with a newer design which allows for easier servicing and also a much more simpler replacement process. Good luck and have a nice weekend 👌🏻👍🏻😉

Far easier to get that out when it wont open...i have a suction cup that i apply and just lift it out to work on it. Disassempling these is easy, getting them back together after cleaning and greasing is very frustrating.

Thanks for your video, but unfortunately by POS clicker waste is stuck in the downward FULL position, no return to level with the waste base, think the issue is that my kid washed her hands in the sink after playing in a sandpit that has really fine sand and its locked the spring mech, the "plug" part that stops the water from escaping will not turn, soon as this lockdown is over i'll finally have viewings on this hose and escape the clicker nightmare. and yes they installed clicker in the bathtub. I'll never have a clicker waste again and I USED to supply them
wow it's so easy to take out in your video, but i cant get it to twist out even with pliers.. any ideas what to do next if pliers cannot twist that dam thing out?
On mine, the plug ceased shut, and obviously as I was shaving, the basin had water in it... not happy with the situation. I had to dismantle the waste trap and stick a screwdriver from the bottom up and force it open. You need to have a container the catch the water in case you have water in the basin like I did. Or if you have a wet and dry vac handy, even better.

The manufacturers of these pop up valves should be made to incorporate a hexagonal flange around the body so that all you should have to do is drop a tube spinner onto the body and it then comes out with the minimum of fuss and not having the potential of putting strain on the unit and risk cracking the ceramic bowl in the process. Just a thought.
Yes this is a good point. They're actually are some pop up wastes on the market today that just drop into the bowl so the whole thing can easily just be removed. Cheers for the comments and have a good day!
All that is easy enough, but what if after replacing the pop up assembly, the water still leaks past the stopper? Is it possible to adjust the extension of the piston, to secure a greater seal? For example, while shaving and I want to have water in the basin to rinse my razor?

Hi, I’ve got a Mizu DN40 from Reece plumbing in a bath in a new home and the plug continually gets stuck down with a full bath and won’t release. I’ve had two new ones supplied under warranty both with the same issue. From what I can tell the weight and pressure of water in the bath is causing too much pressure on the spring not allowing it to release and drain the bath. Is this something you’ve encountered? Unable to get any help with it from anyone unfortunately.
Hmmm this seems unusual! I wonder if the mechanism needs lubricating? Or does the circle rubber seal need some silicone grease on it to allow it to freely move???

Suction cup isn't working either. Your video is a waste of time for people looking for a solution short of calling the plumber.

I kid you not, I decided to take a flyer and knocked on the drain cap HARD until the bolt jammed in the fully recessed position. A that point I was able to unscrew the cap and use vice grips on the bolt. Don't know if a plumber would have done that, but it worked.

You can also buy a new spring mechanism from EBay for around £4 rather than cleaning the old one.

I used a pair of "Mole grips" gently to unscrew the top and then used a free wooden chopstick to clear the gunge .

If they are that much trouble I would just discard the mechanism and get an old fashioned tried and tested manual plug.
The trick is trying to find a plug to fit the hole it can be a challange 😬😬😬
I tried twisting the screwed click clack I have the top half and the spring do I keep turning the brass tube bit still in the sink it’s stuck
Maybe you will need to replace the whole plug and waste assembly if it is all seized up!!! Yikes

Yes it might need the s trap disconnected and then access might be better from there? Might a plumber for this one 👌🏻
