Thank you guys for checking this tutorial out 😄One note to clarify about the Line Art Collection modifier; the line art will always follow the angle and view of the camera in your scene. So if you want to see the line art on an object from a different angle, just move to that angle in your viewport and press "shift + alt + number pad 0" to snap your camera to view for the line art to change to that camera angle 👍

I love the grease pencil method best. =D Have been using that for a couple months and as I only render still images from my scenes to use in a comic, I add a Scene lineart, fiddle around with the settings in the modifier tab, then apply and then add another modifier for line thickness to use the curves to give the lines a little bit of line weight change here and there. Sure, that means I have to redo this every time I move the camera, but it looks good. =)
@SoenKaiArt I'm really intrigued by your method, it sounds like a really cool trick to get another level of stylization. Redoing the curves modifier when you move the camera every once in a while is a small price to pay for a better render in my opinion. Thank you for sharing your technique 😄
I've been recently learning blender in the hopes that I could start making 3D models to use for webcomic backgrounds, and the method using the grease pencil is genuinely so freaking helpful!!! My main 2D program does have some features allowing for line art extraction from 3D assets but I usually don't like that I can't adjust texture or stylization of it. Genuinely I've been binging all your tutorials, thank you so much for making these!!!

@dillykomm6939 That is so amazing to hear, I'm very excited for your project!! Oh, very interesting; I've heard of the freestyle setting before but never really knew what it was. Blender is so amazing with how many options it gives us artists to find the result we like most. Keep up the great work on your projects, my friend 😄
Yeah, I like to try these with my Splatoon models. I been using the 3rd option for a while, but I did it too basic that during this way should make my stuff look better
@fyemaj Thank you so much, I'm really glad to see you here! And I'm so excited the demon slayer look came through in this model, as I actually tried to remake a fence from the main village of the first season 😆
Was hoping to have a finished model for a personal project by now, but kinda got waylaid. Lots of alligators getting in the way of draining the proverbial swamp, let's say. But what is there right now only needs outlines, and after trying inverted hull I've decided that it just does not work for the type of characters I'm aiming for. So I'll be trying the Grease Pencil approach soon, seen a few videos on it, but yours takes a different angle to it than what I've seen so far. Or it's the same, just with different buttons. Either way, the overview of techniques and their recommended application is appreciated.
Can you make a series in which you make a project from zero and teach all about how to shade and proceed with it. BTW love the way you explain its really easy to understand.
@Hermes-0731Thank you so much for enjoying the channel, I'm so glad you like my content 😄 I've been wanting to make a series like the one you're describing for such a long time, and I believe I am very very close to starting that series!
@tarekeras4573 Absolutely!! It's a really simple one to make, and I'll be making a tutorial for it in an anime scenery series I'll be making soon here. Can't wait to share 😆
im personally using the 3rd method (thanks a lot btw) for the anime characters and OC I make, they look so much better than with the inverted hull method!
@NekoDucc I'm so excited for you! The line art mod method is my favorite, and I'm sure you can use it for any and every line art need you end up having 😄 Keep up the great work!
@cinemelies734 Oh yes! Hopefully soon I'll make a tutorial for making a whole anime environment in 3D, and I'll be using the wooden fence you're referring to in it and show the shader setup 😆
Thank you so much Christian, for this tutorial. Thr problem I have faced with line arts in my scene is, when I have an object like rocks and I place then on grass, the line art comes on top of the grass. I want the lineart to be below the grass, for the part of thr rock that is actually below the grass. But I cant figure out how.
@ojas339 Thank you for your support, it means so much to me 😄 You raise a really good point; I'm assuming you're using a hair particle system to generate your grass, which would make sense if you are since the line art modifier only registers objects unfortunately (as far as I'm aware), and not particle systems. I'd suggest using the second method I shared (the inverted hull method) for your rocks or any other specific objects that will be amongst the grass, and just make it blend well with the overall line art in your scene. You may need to separate the objects amongst the grass by placing them in a different collection so that the line art doesn't continue to effect those objects. But, if that doesn't work, my second recommendation would be to make a couple quick grass blades a models, and use geometry nodes to do the same thing a particle system would. But this way, your grass will be registered as objects. You may need to tweak the settings of your line art modifier to make it work well with this method, mainly by turning off intersections in the line art modifier, but it should get you a much better result. I hope this helps, and thank you again for supporting me and my channel 😋
Hello! I had a question! With the GP Line Art Technique, is there a way to hide the line art on certain parts of an object? I have a model that uses a blush object over the face, and when the GP Line Art is used, that transparent blush object has an outline over the face.
@MysticalCyan This is a great question! And the answer is pretty simple. All you'll need to do to make it so that the blush object isn't affected by the GP Line Art is to make a new collection for your character inside the already existing one, place all the objects you want the line art to affect inside that collection, and all the objects (like the blush object) that you don't want to be affected outside of that new collection. Then just assign the GP Line Art Modifier to the correct collection and you should only have that collection's objects affected 😄 It should look something like this: Character Collection > Sub Collection for GP (inside Character Collection) I hope this helps!
I was wondering if there’s a technique to outline only parts that are overlapping and the same colour? So for example my characters sleeves have no definition/can’t be seen when they are not facing the camera because there’s no colour difference between it and the chest area of the shirt. So, after I’ve rendered it, I’ve been going in and drawing thin shadows in the crossover point between the shirt and sleeve. Can I automate that in some way?
@cc.creationz That is a great idea! A lot of people have been asking me to do these kinds of tutorials for cycles. So, I'll probably make a whole anime tutorial series in cycles when I have the opportunity 😄
@ToroAnimation Thank you, your support and encouragement means a lot! I would love to make this into a full time gig, God willing. What about you? I've seen some of your content and it's really good, man! Love your little cat character.

Great video! Could you make one on getting anime shadows? The worst part of 3D anime is when the shadows look like they're on a 3D character. There's now methods using Geometry nodes to get custom normals that are calculated by the geometry nodes so the shadows have a 2D feel and can be customized so things like the neck gets more shadows and the face gets less shadows
@XINN1X Thank you so much! I think your suggestion is a brilliant one 😆 I've run into the same exact problem you're describing with my own anime character models, and have found some really good solutions to this shadow problem. I'll hopefully be able to make this tutorial soon when I start making tutorials on how to make your own anime character model in 3D. So definitely keep an eye out for that when it comes!
any idea how to get the 3rd option to work with volumetric objects in the scene? i want my entire scene to have lines and a fog over it but whenever i cover my scene with fog, the outlines dissapear on everything else
And so the prophecy was fulfilled; @nkanyisoinnocentkhwane3752 would strengthen his resolve and continue to choose the inverted hull method for all of his blender projects. And all who saw him shed and single tear of admiration as they saluted his fine work and determination 🥲🫡
@@ComfeeMug bro I spent a bit of time commenting across socials until I got him to add a tutorial for a scene he made a year ago 🤣 he put it on Patreon a few hours ago
Hi, great tutorial - however, when I try your last method of line art from collection, even in a very simple scene blender freezes. Surely it can't be my PC as I thought the specs are quite high (64gb ram + rtx 2070 super) Just wondering if anyone else is having the same problem? Thanks :)
@danyunlwilson Thank you for checking this tutorial out. Though I'm not fully aware of how big of projects you are working with, but my computer freezes as well some times when using the third method if there are a lot of objects the line art has to cover. Think of it like an artist drawing lines on a piece of paper. The less detailed the final result is, the faster it is for the artist to draw. But if the art needs to have more detail, it can take a while for the artist to finish drawing it. So when your computer freezes, it's just waiting for all of the lines to be drawn out (calculated). This may not help speed up your computer, but I hope it helps you understand why it's freezing.
@@ComfeeMug haha good analogy. Yes I eventually deduced that, it only does it when the camera moves and not viewport so it must be that each frame is re-calculating the line art for the perspective. I opted for a solidify modifier with a black diffuse bsdf material slot in the solidify modifier. All the best thanks for your reply :)
@marine5775 Yes, each method absolutely works for character models. It is all up to your personal preference on which outline style will work best for your needs 😁
@ComfeeMug Nah, I'm not that skilled, I wish if there was an easy tutorial but this is great to show my friends who is struggling to make something similar from Initial D anime 😅
@yonewbuddyme4099 I hope soon, really soon! I have a lot of designs and ideas for characters and feature animations, so I hope I can start working on them and teaching you all how to do the same in a couple months' time 😆
There's also a fourth option for line art: geometry nodes. I've used the fresnel method in my own artwork, but (for me, at least) inverted hull fails for organic shapes, and my particular use-case has made grease pencil a pain to use. I found this tutorial on creating line-art using geometry nodes and I've found that it works almost perfectly for my own art: ua-cam.com/video/_HO4HK1uBJc/v-deo.html
@ardathksheyna Wow, really??! The more I learn about geometry nodes, the more I am just blown away by everything they can do 😱 Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial with me, I can't wait to learn more!!
@@ComfeeMug Not a problem! I've been digging into geonodes for the last few months and yeah, they're incredibly powerful. One little change to that tutorial makes it even more flexible-using the Active Camera node instead of an Object Info node to specify the camera. I think that was added in 4.1, which may have been shortly after that tutorial was published. But basically, it means you won't have to specify a camera for the line art to be aligned to. However, in a viewport that's not using a camera, it'll still look like the grease pencil line-art-basically scribbley lines all over the geometry😆
@ojas339 Sure, haha. I have the anime sky/hdri background tutorial scheduled to be the third tutorial after my newest one that is coming out tomorrow. So I believe the anime sky tutorial should be out in about a month 😁

@@ComfeeMug thats great! you should look into the method the Dillon Goo Studio uses, its amazing! It's a geometry nodes custom normals solution
@XINN1X Absolutely will look into his process! I've learned so much from @dillongoo and am always excited when he releases a new tutorial.
When there is a lot of building material
Shading npr is too difficult. Is there any way to reduce the time?
any idea how to get the 3rd option to work with volumetric objects in the scene? i want my entire scene to have lines and a fog over it but whenever i cover my scene with fog, the outlines dissapear on everything else
I was born to use the Inverted Hull method, it's all I've ever known
I also follow Levi Magony, so that's why I'm an outline fiend 😅
And so the prophecy was fulfilled; @nkanyisoinnocentkhwane3752 would strengthen his resolve and continue to choose the inverted hull method for all of his blender projects. And all who saw him shed and single tear of admiration as they saluted his fine work and determination 🥲🫡
@filmvagabond7032 Oh, I haven't heard of him, but I'm very interested in seeing his channel! Thank you for sharing him with me!
@@ComfeeMug bro I spent a bit of time commenting across socials until I got him to add a tutorial for a scene he made a year ago 🤣 he put it on Patreon a few hours ago
@nkanyisoinnocentkhwane3752 Haha, that is so awesome!! And apparently effective also 😂
at 1:29 the Mix nodes connection on the right is out of frame/not mentioned
@SicklyStars Oh, did I forget to mention it. My apologies, thank you for pointing that out 😊
Hi, great tutorial - however, when I try your last method of line art from collection, even in a very simple scene blender freezes.
Hello does this work with character models too
@marine5775 Yes, each method absolutely works for character models. It is all up to your personal preference on which outline style will work best for your needs 😁
How to make stylish Anime bricks?
@ajoychakraborty3400 Ooo, yes, this is an excellent idea! Thank you for the suggestion 😁
I'm in desperate need of this thing. I'm making a character but the lineart modifier is just not working. Hope any of these works
@whatTheblue Oh man, I hope my GP Line Art modifier section can help you out then! It's by far my favorite technique 😆
Is it a technical issue or taste?
@kenonerboy Oh, what was it you were asking about? I'd love to help answer your question if I can!
@@ComfeeMug actually i was trying to help him aswell lol
Initial D Time yeah
Ooo, you making anime car models??
@ComfeeMug Nah, I'm not that skilled, I wish if there was an easy tutorial but this is great to show my friends who is struggling to make something similar from Initial D anime 😅
This is so good!! Love your style of teaching and communicating. You have my abo 🔥🤌🏼😄
Somebody know how to export it to unreal?
Anime characters when?
@ardathksheyna Wait, there's an active camera node now?? I have to start using it, it sounds like it could be really helpful!
How to mack anime hdri
@user-zl3pd1sj1v Funnily enough, one of my next tutorials is all about making anime HDRIs and sky backgrounds for your projects 😄
@@ComfeeMug could you give me a time frame of the release date ( tentatively) of this magnificent Video of yours :))
@ojas339 Sure, haha. I have the anime sky/hdri background tutorial scheduled to be the third tutorial after my newest one that is coming out tomorrow. So I believe the anime sky tutorial should be out in about a month 😁
Discord link plz
@rajnagar3686 It's in the description of this and any of my previous videos 😄 Sorry, I would link it in this comment too, but I'm away from my device that has proper discord access, and none of my discord links from this device have worked in the past 😅 Excited to talk with you more over there, though!

If you make a comprehensive tutorial on how you manipulate noise textures imma donate. I wont use patreon, i dont like the company, so get a kofi or something
@kenonerboy I really appreciate your willingness to support my channel, but please don't feel like you need to donate your hard earned money to me. Use it as you see best, my friend. Your view and comments here are already supporting me a lot, so thank you for that 😊
@@ComfeeMug id rather donate than use patreon. I have bad experiences with patreon

@dreadwinter You made some really great points, I really appreciate your feedback. Me and my editor are constantly trying to figure out the best way and timing to showcase things, so your feedback is super helpful for us.
