This is the first time I've ever seen someone actually demonstrate how to successfully use rolled hem feet and how to get the roll started consistently and how to hold the fabric to keep the roll going. I'm going to experiment on my Viking machine since I have the rolled hem feet and they've been ignored for 20 years.
I've had this foot for as long as I can remember and have failed on so many occasions trying to use it. I always did rolled hems by hand. After this video, I hemmed a chiffon full circle skirt PERFECTLY! I've watched numerous videos and this one is the absolute best! Thank you from this 70 year old seamstress!
What a difference when you watch a pro do this. I've learned more with her examples than any videos prior to this one. Simple to the point!!!!! That is the secret to a teacher that knows her skills and can relay it to her students without the confusion. Love this!
I watched another video on using the rolled hem foot just prior to watching this one. The difference between watching an expert and an amateur is startling. Your expertise and clear instruction is so evident, so much so I learnt more in the first few moments here than in the whole of the first video watched. Many thanks 👏👏😊😊
That’s why they are experts but singer had a video for using a rolled hem foot and they said to iron the hem first. If I did that I wouldn’t need a roll hem foot
Oh you are awesome, this is exactly the kind of tutorial us UA-cam learners need! No dinky music or annoyingly perky voices, just a pro clearly explaining the process. Cant wait to check out your other videos, I have a feeling you are going to help me take my sewing to the next level. Thank you very much for the video!
This is the BEST video and explanation I have ever seen on a rolled hem. You did a fantastic job. Your directions were clear and I can hardly wait to see how well I can do it now. I have been struggling for a whole week now and been frustrated as can be. Thank you!.
Thank you for this superb tutorial, the best I have seen, you actually show how to sew a skirt hem and join the ends and deal with the seams, thank you very very much, I will now give it a go :)
I always watch your tutorials. They are direct and well explained. Thank you for not having annoying music when trying to learn something new or a huge introduction to their channel. I just subscribed
I’ve been sewing for 40+ years, (theatrical costumes for the last 15 of those years), but your technique for rolled hems is the BEST! Plus, your teaching style is so relaxed yet professional. You are a joy to watch. You make me feel like I can do the things! I love learning new techniques and you are my new “go to”! Thanks for all you do!
I’ve been struggling all morning with my new presser foot until I watched your video. So much better than the official explanation and video from my machine company. Thank you,
Thank you so very much for explaining and showing how to feed the cloth in the beginning to get started. This is the first time i will use Round Hemmer Foot.
I am thanking you for the zigzag tip beforehand. I just know it will work for me. I practiced on the same fabric of my garment and it worked but I think it could be smoother, so UA-cam to the rescue. I have limited extra fabric for practice and I knew I was in need of help. I can go to bed now, knowing everything is gonna be alright and I will finish my hem tomorrow thanks to you.
I have needed to do a rolled hem for several projects - and never could figure out how. I watched about 6 videos before I ran across yours. The way you showed getting the (full circle item) stitch started - going back and forth - was truly mind blowing. The stitch starting at the very end was amazing. No more trying to iron that tiny area, nor having an inch or so unstitched. I'm so glad I kept searching. I am now subscribed!
Thank you for this. I couldn't figure out why you'd need a special foot if you still had to do that nasty, finger-burning pressing anyway. This makes so much more sense.
you're never too old to learn new tricks - haha. I agree that your tutorial is well presented and very helpful. Until a few years ago, I didn't have any extra feet for my sewing machine (had it since 1981). Now that I do have the rolled hem foot (as well as many others), I appreciate your time and knowledge to assist in learning the best way to use them. Thank you!
I’m new to sewing: This tutorial is a HUGE!! I’ve been struggling with my rolled hem stitch foot for so long... THANK YOU! With you little trick I got it on the first try!!
I have been having such a time trying to use one of these "hallelujah, no ironing gems." Thank you for such a great demonstration! I got sooooo frustrated I decided to sew another day. Now, I'm excited to try again tomorrow. Thank you again!
Thanks so much. All the other tutorials are pretty much the same- this one gives some tips that really help get you going. It seems that no matter what it'll take a fair amount of practice, but your tips prove that I *can* get a rolled hem out of this foot without pre-pressing the fabric. Cheers!
Excellent! Just excellent! I’ve had all these feet for ages and could not get the hang of it. I’m off to try again. So excited 😆. Thank you for sharing ❤
A comment here made me watch this tutorial-I didn't want to at first cos I felt it was too long for a simple foot. I totally agree, Amazing tutorial! It filled in all the gaps other tutorials left out Thank you very much for this.
I purchased the rolled hem feet and viewed several videos on how to use them. It seemed like more work measuring and ironing to get to the actual sewing. Thank you for teaching me a better way to use these feet!❤
THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH for your expert instruction on using a rolled hem... I can hardly wait to try it because I'm REALLY tired of pinning the entire edge under!! 🙂
Thanks so much for this video. Few instructors show how to start right at the beginning and fewer show how to wrangle the fabric for the NEXT side. I may actually make Christmas napkins this year!
I have been using the Kenneth D King shirt making method (pressing a starter hem and straight stitching with the rolled hem foot on top before the wiggle), and thought this gave the ultimate results. It's worked well on 2mm hems, so I've been feeling like a sewing genius til now. Trimming the crossing seam allowances looks so much simpler than untucking the hem and sewing flat under the foot and restarting. I can't wait to pull out my chiffon and georgette stash and try these tips out. And Everyone is getting placemats and napkins this Christmas. Thank you so much.
Excellent video instruction. Your technique, demo and explanation makes me want to go try it. I watched another video prior to this on sewing the rolled hem and the view was from the side, her fingers were in the way and she had no technique. Her video was over 500k views! I am surprised this video isn't at least as much.
This video is incredibly helpful. I’ve got a Singer sewing machine that I do a lot of basic stuff on but I was recently gifted a box of sewing machine feet and I’m trying to figure out what each one is and more importantly, how to use them. I think the 6mm rolled hem with a zig zag stitch might be the perfect way to finish off the armholes and neckline of a simple lightweight knit nightgown I’ve been wanting to make. I’ll run some tests to see if it keeps it’s stretch but this would be the exact level of subtle I want if it works. I’ve also got a ruffle foot that’s absolutely crazy looking. No idea what I’ll use it for but the moving parts are alarming.
Thanks for the two tutorials here with the use of these wonderful ideas to use these foots/feet...lol.......I just now need to find them at local fabric stores and get to use them in my sewing plans.
I was wondering how to start a rolled hem at the beginning . Now, I see how you have to start it on the opposite side. I was also wondering how to get the rolled hem to come out even. It seems so easy to do. TYSM for showing these tricks. It's also nice to know how you can also use the zig zag stitch with this foot.
Omg! thank you, thank you, thank you for this video!! I have been so nervous to hem my daughters chiffon layered dress. I feel so much for confident now!! You make it so clear and easy! Great video!
Wow! So helpful! I was wondering about that myself! And have experienced so much frustration sewing over seams on my garments when there's multiple layers of fabric. It seemed like the machine would jam and give me an error message. I bet this was the problem! 😅
Wow Thank you so much I always wondered how to start with a thread tail it's logical start on the wrong side 1 inch away then turning it back and grab the tail, I had it all wrong.
Great tutorial, excellent tips. Found you just on time and subscribed immediately . I wonder what should be the length of the stitch since my machine is not a “ Smart machine “ no apps. ? Thank you.
Thank you, the explanation is really clear. I tried using this method (zigzag stitching and then turning the handkerchief inside out) to sew a silk handkerchief, but I'm not satisfied with the result. The zigzag stitch doesn't work well on silk, and once I insert the thread into the presser foot, I can't get the fabric to turn properly. Do you have any suggestions?
What machine and foot do you have? Some feet work better than others. It also takes a little practice but I have done silk using this method successfully.

Very good instructions
I've been trying to get someone to teach me how to use the rolled hem foot for years! You make it simple. Thanks.
Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
WOW. After decades of sewing, I finally understand how to use the rolled hem foot. Your use of the thread loop to start the seam is epic genius.
Glad it was helpful! Any chance you are Jodie married to my cousin Steve?

I completely agree, I ws ready to give up in this.
Thank you. I sew for people hemming prom gowns and the such. This is going to be a game changer for me. Thank you
I used to work for a bridal shop and also hemmed LOTS of prom gowns. I hope my video helped.
agreed with everyone else, looked at so many videos prior to this and yours is the best. Thank you! ❣

Great tutorial, excellent tips. Found you just on time and subscribed immediately . I wonder what should be the length of the stitch since my machine is not a “ Smart machine “ no apps. ? Thank you.
Thanks for the sub! If your machine has a dial with stitches/inch I suggest 10-12. If your stitch length is in mm, I suggest 2.5-3.0. Hope that helps.
Love the zigzag trick!
