“If you are feeling like you need this for a dress you’re supposed to wear to a wedding tomorrow…” So, I looked up this tutorial to help me hem my bridesmaid’s dress. For my friend’s wedding…tomorrow. I can’t tell you how hard I laughed. Thank you for posting this video! It was very insightful and thorough, and it added a lot of levity to my evening. 😂
Oh my GOD literally just that "line up the edge to the bar" thing absolutely changed the game for me!! Haven't seen that on any other tutorial and got a perfect hem first try (after many failed attempts before this tutorial obviously). Thank you!!
Those are my exact thoughts Ané! I sewed a much better hem after watching Stephanie's video! I am so much more confident with using the rolled hem foot! Thanks Stephanie! You ROCK!! 🤓
I just sewed that on the first try. I’ve sewn plenty of hems, with the standard foot (fold, iron, press, sew, repeat), but all the tutorials I’ve seen on these were so complicated that I didn’t really see the point… by the time I’d get it set up I could’ve gone through the whole routine I was used to. The tip about the fabric matching the bar and pre folding the fabric made the difference. Thanks!
Holy cow, your tips and tricks are fabulous!!!! I love my rolled hem foot (for over 50 years) but often struggle getting it started. The tools and how you demonstrate them are brilliant. I'm so glad you posted this. Thank you!!!
Huge help with the awl. I have watched 10 different videos about this foot, and had a mess every time. Thanks to you showing how to poke the fabric all the way in, I tried again, and Voila! Rolled hem!
I've watched several videos on the rolled hem foot and this one finally had the golden egg. Using my serger tweezers was a game changer. I was hemming a bridesmaid dress and it turned out beautifully. Thanks for much!
HOLY COW!!! I love your laugh and your get to the point directions! Thank you so much I've had these for almost a year and have been too afraid to stop and figure it out and again... just wow especially making doll clothes thank you thank you thank you
Oh my god, I was making a Selkie dress, and I hand folded and hemmed it when I realised it was provided with my machine, I just screamed at myself like where was my brain. 😭 The tips given were amazing
When you said that the first few stitches would be hidden, allowed me to get a rolled hem. I kept trying to start way back where the funnel is. Thanks for a clear explanation
I just got a box of rolled hem feet with a sort of an idea of how to use them. Which, obviously wasn’t the right way. Thank you so much for your clear instructions!!!
Another option to starting is to sew 3-4 stitches on your fabric without folding it over, just flat on the sewing machine bed. Then lift your pressure foot and needle, pull the fabric back, and use both of your thread tails to manipulate the fabric into the scroll. Once it’s in the scroll correctly, just position the fabric under the foot at the beginning of the seam. The fabric, in my experience, needs to cover the left toe of the foot as you sew forward. These feet are amazing and provide wonderful results. The foot does the heavy lifting, but the preparation is key to success. Generally speaking, the bigger the scroll, the heavier the fabric that they can handle. I use the 6 mm one for flannel, but I’d never use a 3 mm one for flannel. It does take a bit of practice to get used to working with these types of feet, so test out on some 12-18 inch strips to learn. You can also sometimes start on a scrap or leader before moving onto your hem. I find that works as it gives me a little feeding space before the real hem starts. Almost any type of zig zag stitch will give a scalloped edge, especially if you adjust your tension and stitch length. I find the scallops more pronounced on knit fabrics than cotton. The wide opening in your foot gives you some needle position options. Play with those in combination with various stitch designs or patterns for some attractive finishes. One word of caution though, stitches that are stitched by moving forward and backward may not work because the hem behind the foot is already stitched down. Stitches that are executed from back to front will likely work best. Have fun. Thanks for posting this video.
Great video! Really good to follow along. I had to laugh when you said dont try using it for a dress you've made for a wedding the next day 😅 Exactly what i was doing, i did a couple of test runs and then hemmed successfully thanks to your instructions!
This tutorial is AMAZING!!!! First time using a rolled hem foot and it was so easy to catch on with the tips and tricks from this video. Thank you so so much!!
I have first used rolled hems in very fine almost sheer crepe fabric. And I actually used sewing pins to gather the fabric around the cone and the guide and I use a pin to keep the start of the stitch in place, since it tends to unroll itself even if you press it. An awl is much easier for fabrics with more weight in them! Great video.
So helpful!!! Knowing about the bar is truly a game changer for me. I'm hemming some sheer 7 yd length curtains and always fight getting started. Using 2 or 3 stitches at the beginning and then bringing those thru the scroll is how I've been doing this for years but it was still a 2 or 3 try process to get started. Knowing about the bar has made all the difference in the world. Thanks! 😊
this is so helpful omg. i struggle with clean hems so badly, i always end up just leaving the bottom unfinished at the end of a project so this is a life saver!! thanks for the wonderful video
This was a fantastic tutorial! Thank you for showing and explaining how the foot works. 15 min later I'm pretty happy with what my rolled hem is looking like. Thank you.
I never could figure out my rolled hem foot, so I’m glad I found this video! Thanks for the easy-to-follow tutorial and for making my projects go much quicker!

thank you, thank you, thank you! rolled hem foot newbie here and on sheer iridescent nylon special occasion fabric (it's own special kind of hell) to boot. the bernina instructions that came with my new yet vintage rolled hem foot didn't help nor did a tutorial i found from bernina online. your tutorial, however, a lifesaver! for me, your way of pre-folding the seam to start it, stitch, then backstitching before starting that original pre-folded seam on the foot tunnel was a game changer! (especially compared to the original foot instructions.) also, your tip of helping "pre-fold" the upcoming fabric feeding into the foot made all the difference in the world, too. xo - dd

I wish I read your comment, especially since it's the first one lol. Just bought a rolled hem foot, so going to try this tip and hopefully I get better luck.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been struggling for years to decipher the directions included in my vintage Kenmore Sew-By-Color kit. I just happened to have these feet on accident, i didn’t mean to buy them and they’ve been sitting in my sewing box for a while because i never understood how to use them. Wooooooo 🙌🙌🙌
Thank you so much for explaining the rolled hem foot in a easy to understand way. I purchased a presser foot set from an online company, and they offered such minimal support and assistance, I was very upset. Plus the rolled hem foot I got was a 3mm, I guess, with the tiniest bar to feed the fabric under, that it simply is not catching the fabric and therefore not working for me. I am going to look at your suggested feet and use your affiliate link. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Weeeell the dress I'm making is actually more of a cape anyway and the wedding I'm making it for is in 4 days, so there is obviously nothing to worry about. Nope. It's all gonna be okay 😂😂😂 Thank you for the video, short and informative, just what I need!
Well! This is going to be my first experience with a rolled hem. I have 4 dresses to hem for a upcoming wedding in May. Glad I have time to practice! Thank you :-)
Yes'm! That was EXTREMELY helpful! I don't even want to tell you what I've been doing with this foot. 🙄 I will, however, tell you what I've been doing only works a couple inches and then it all goes to poop! 🤭 ...I'm off to practice now!

Great explanation. Thank you. I am trying to hem a rectangular tablecloth and napkins. The straight hems are lovely, but I am struggling with the corners...they get very thick when folded over and i find it frustrating to get them over the hump, feed into the foot and forward and reverse stich at every corner. Please help! a short video perhaps? Thanks so much
Thank you so much!!! I inherited a machine from my mom with this foot and because of you I figured out how to use it! It looks so much nicer than when I press and pin by hand!! Thank you!!
I have watched countless videos for using a hemmer foot and still cannot do it. I will try prefolding and the tools you used and let you know if it worked. No other video showed me that you need to prefold the material. Thank you. You can quess where I am headed now...
Great tip to finger press first. I was working with the scrap while watching and it turned out great. Working on the fashion fabric next. Fingers crossed.
@@StephanieRubletz Thanks, it worked -- until I got to the corner of the square. It resisted going over the rolled turn, so I just took the roll out and completed to side. Then I started the new side. I did that for all for corners. Could you make a video showing what to do when you reach the end of the corner? It's probably obvious, but I'm overlooking it.
I always just do the first side then dinner press the next side including the roll. Then I put in my first few stitches with the finger pressed roll just sitting under the foot. Then after I've stitched down 4-5 stitches I get that side into the roll foot. I do need to do a part two to this video but I hope that helps until I can get to it. 😀
I have had theses guys for over a year and the first time I tried it, I was like hell no! The fabric was refusing to get into the groove, but thanks to you I just might try it again.
Thank you so much for this, I bought the feet but didn’t have a clue how to use them, you made it so clear and I think luck was on my side as the first time I tried it worked!!
Thanks a lot, Stephanie! Your tutorial is a gem. I know again how to do it, because I did it once upon a time together with my mom and meanwhile I completely forgot the tricks.
Thanks for watching! If you are going around the outside of a curve it will be totally fine, that's why these are so popular for hemming skirts. But doing a wavy line or an inside curve does take practice.
This was so helpful, but I need a video showing the rolled hem going over a seam. I tried to do this and it worked until I hit my first seam and the fabric immediately jammed in the foot. Any suggestions?
@@StephanieRubletz yes, I believe it! I’ve tried before but could never figure it out, so thanks for your tutorial. I just found your site today. I’ve always wanted to make my own clothes.

I have watched countless videos for using a hemmer foot and still cannot do it. I will try prefolding and the tools you used and let you know if it worked. No other video showed me that you need to prefold the material. Thank you. You can quess where I am headed now...
I hope you were able to get it working for you♥️
Great video, thank you!! Rolled hemmer feet make me nervous, after seeing your tutorial I feel like I can probably make it work...
Thanks so much for watching! Good luck!
Great tip to finger press first. I was working with the scrap while watching and it turned out great. Working on the fashion fabric next. Fingers crossed.
Good luck Dee!
I am (hehe) making a dress for a wedding - a couple of weeks away. This was FABULOUS!
Thanks so much! Have fun at the wedding!
I have had theses guys for over a year and the first time I tried it, I was like hell no! The fabric was refusing to get into the groove, but thanks to you I just might try it again.
Awesome! Good luck!
Thank you so much for this, I bought the feet but didn’t have a clue how to use them, you made it so clear and I think luck was on my side as the first time I tried it worked!!
That's amazing Ann! Good for you for trying something new!
WOW!!! Thank you🔥You really explained it the best way out of all the videos I’ve watched🤗
Awesome! Happy to help❤️
Oh my goodness! I needed this tutorial 2 days ago lol. I gave up on the rolled hem foot!! I’ll go back now and practice 😁
Oh don't give up! You'll get it❤️
Life changing! Thank you so much!!!
Thank you!!
Never used one before but this helped me "get it".
I love your personality. Thank you for the help😄
Thanks for watching!!
I don't typically comment but dang! I had to comment because I finally found a video that explains this soooo well! Thanks ❤️
Well I'm glad you stopped by! Thanks for watching and commenting. Happy sewing❤️
Thanks a lot, Stephanie! Your tutorial is a gem. I know again how to do it, because I did it once upon a time together with my mom and meanwhile I completely forgot the tricks.
Sometimes I need a refresher of things I did way back. Happy sewing ❤️
That close up was very helpful thanks. What, I'm looking for now is, help with using it on a CURVE!
Thanks for watching! If you are going around the outside of a curve it will be totally fine, that's why these are so popular for hemming skirts. But doing a wavy line or an inside curve does take practice.
Amazing tutorial. Am about to purchase a rolled hem foot. Can't wait. ;-)
Awesome! Good luck Sharon❤️
Any tips for crossing seams with the rolled hem foot? I always struggle to get across seams cleanly
This was so helpful, but I need a video showing the rolled hem going over a seam. I tried to do this and it worked until I hit my first seam and the fabric immediately jammed in the foot. Any suggestions?
This really helped me out, it worked out on the first try 👏🏾🎉
That's great! Thanks for watching.
You sure make that look easy!
Lol don't worry, I had my turn of almost ripping my hair out.
@@StephanieRubletz yes, I believe it! I’ve tried before but could never figure it out, so thanks for your tutorial. I just found your site today. I’ve always wanted to make my own clothes.
Thank you! I was struggling and gave up. I’ll get it out again and give it a go.
Good luck Rochelle!
Thank you for this tutorial! I was gifted a sewing machine by my mother and one of the accessories included was a rolled hem foot. Still getting the hang of it, but I do enjoy the learning process!
That's the great thing about sewing, you'll never run out of things to learn!
Super helpful, thank you. I bought a rolling hem foot set from Amazon that came with no instructions 😅
Lol, same. They just expect everyone to know how I think.
This is fantastic. I avoid doing rolled hems and you have inspired me to take up the challenge. Thank you. Stay safe and well Lynne
Fantastic! Good luck Lynne and keep well ♥️
