I bought a set of wide hem presser feet like this through Amazon. They came with no instructions. I found a video which was some help, but after trying it about twelve times, I was ready to give up. Then my husband found this tutorial. I watched it several times and then tried it again. This Tutorial answered several questions and showed me what I was doing wrong. I just finished hemming three sides of a piece of material and had no problems at all.

Ahhh, thanks for this video tutorial. I just tried using my set of wide rolled hem feet and it was challenging. I certainly only got one roll and they weren't even. Sometimes it stitched on and sometimes off.
    Tips I got:
    1. Start stitching a little before you roll it in, do a double roll.
    2. Feed in the double roll, slowly
    3. Move your needle over. This will work well for couching wide ribbons and doing decorative stitching in the middle.

Thanks for showing the tricky bits - the seams, the end. Most tutorials only show getting it started.

Thank you. This is really helpful. I bought a rolled hem foot and six pieces turned up. I thought the little pieces were to be connected to the big pieces, making in total 3 presser foots. Then I saw your video and you explained it was 6 different sizes!

You make it look so easy. No matter how many times I tried and how long I practiced, I hated every second of it. I was spending more time trying to make this work than just double-pressing the old fashion way. I really wanted this to work :(

It definitely takes a bit of practice, but as with all things sewing, what works well for one person isn't always the best way for another. There's so many different approaches that there's no right way of sewing things and that's half the fun I think x 😀

Thank you so much for this- as I was searching, I could only find videos of the thin rolled hem for sheer fabrics. This is just what I was wanting, and quickly found a set of feet in 6 widths online, which came today! Hope they work with my 1970’s Singer Fashion mate 360! It will be so nice to not have to premeasure, iron, and then feed myself! Great video. I had been trying to practice using the narrow hem foot but I think my fabric may have been too heavy because I had issues getting the fabric to feed thru the little slot. After watching your video, I now know that I should have been using a wide hem foot for the weightier cotton fabric that I was trying to practice on. I'll keep the narrow hem foot for really lightweight or sheer fabrics.

Absolutely, it's always great to know what's out there even if it's not something you'll use on your current projects. If I'm only doing something little I don't bother to use it but if I've got metres to hem it soon works out much quicker when you get the hang of it.

Just bought a set of six containing three narrow feet plus three wide.
The narrow one I tried initially worked pretty well first time.
The wide foot I tried next would not keep the fabric running true for more than a few inches. It would skew, bunch, untwist and go completely off the rails.
After many attempts I was quite discouraged and disappointed, cursing the foot as another piece of disingenously produced Chinese tat that superficially resembles the real thing but isn't engineered to actually work properly.
Then I watched this video, saw that the foot here looks identical to mine, yet meters of fabric romp effortlessly through the machine with good results.
Hmmm... maybe I was too hasty blaming the Chinese on this occasion.
I picked up some points of technique from the video and tried some lighter, more flexible fabric closer in quality to the one shown. This produced a vast improvement, not quite good enough to be confident using the foot on a project but sufficient for me to un-give-up and push ahead with this.
Thanks very much for a helpful demonstration.

This looks like more work than quite a few do without an attachment. Also you double folded the hem before it went through the attachment the same as if you were not using an attachment. At the point when you removed the fabric from the attachment it looks like the hem may not have fed trough evenly.

More trouble than it's worth, based on this demo. It would be faster to fold over twice, press well, pin or clip, and sew close to the edge. The French seams make using the rolled edge foot awkward and untenable.

Have you tried finger pressing the first bit of the hem to help it stay in place easier/adding a couple of stitches before putting it in? Maybe something like a toothpick would help you push the fabric in place if it's difficulty getting it in the guides that's more the problem.

Thank you for this tutorial. I have been trying to use this foot on my machine but the top thread isn't picking up the bobbin thread when I use it. Do you have any idea what I may be doing wrong? Many thanks. Hila

    • @SewingbeefabricsCoUkUpdates
      @SewingbeefabricsCoUkUpdates  7 років тому

The foot shouldn't make any difference to what the top thread and bobbin thread are doing as it is simply a guide for the fabric before it reaches the needle. I would say it is far more likely that the needle is bent or either top or bottom thread just needs rethreading. Or possibly the bobbin you have in is a plastic one that has started to slightly distort in shape. Feel free to email me if you haven't managed to fix it and I'll help you troubleshoot it.

Thank you. I have plastic bobbins so I will check that as well as rethreading again and starting afresh and will let you know how I get on..

Are you holding down both loose ends as you start? Some machines are awkward (mine for one) and if I don't hold both ends firmly for the first few stitches, the bottom one gets sucked back under and disconnects from the top thread, sounds like maybe that is what is happening to you?

I'm extremely impatient with myself. I've tried everything and nothing is working
