It would be comical if Meshuggah were shown some of Yogevs hard efforts and they were blown away because they too, had no idea their music was so complex.
thats probably not far off from the truth lol theyve stated that they dont ever focus on math or time signatures when composing music, they just make shit that sounds cool. making it work as "proper" rhythms is literally an afterthought for them 😭
Or they would become quite surprised - at the fact that they use the exact same color-coded number system in their rehearsals ;)
Me going to learn this song: "its in 4/4 how hard can it be"
Tomas Haake: *laughs in 17/16*
4/4 in one hand
ok, I tried to laugh in that time signature...
🤣

Sort of a James Brown feel- Jens Hanneman
When the vocals start, I think it's over for the average musician.
@@fredriksvard2603 must be nice, I'm still on Mr. Sandman 😕

I think Meshuggah should be an academic discipline by now. I love these videos!
They were a central part of one course on Berklee and one conservatory in Sweden also analyzed them if I am not mistaken. Very fucking cool and I hope more jump on that train in the future and with other important bands as these madlads!
lol yeah!
That is so fucking seriously true. I'm going to harass my college's music theory teachers to teach me this shit to the max or I'll detune all their shit.
@@aplus1080 just chill xD
@@franlovelsimic8421 And people say this isn't music
Holy fuck this is insane - and your method of illustrating it is SO HELPFUL - this is how I'm going to draw out complex polyrhythms forever now - THANK YOU
How dare you let us choose between dancers and stengah I feel offended I want both .
Exactly my feeling, this ain’t easy
"Stengah"
Oh easy choice
"Dancers"
SHIT
when dancers is in any list there is no other option imho.
Exactly why I'm not choosing
I feel offended too. We need to shut him down. This makes UA-cam a hostile environment for me.
You're like a safari guide through the wilderness that is Meshuggah!
I must say your videos are incredibly intuitive and very eloquent yet not overly complicated, not much "fluff" per say.
Fluff?
@@RicoLee27 usally fluffs refers too uneeded additives, commonly you can say an essay with too many unneeded words as "fluff" or "bs"
@@RicoLee27 he defines fluff by being exactly the opposite of what he said previous to using "fluff" even in inverted commas
Per say 🤣
Dancers To A Discordant System HAS to win. Best song ever written and I would love to have it analyzed by you.
I really wonder, if Meshuggah sometimes watches your videos and thinks "Ooooh no, OOOOOH NO, WHAT HAVE WE DONE!"
What’s really wild is that they’ve all said in interviews they just write the song however they feel it, and don’t delve into the theory and deliberately plan time signatures.
They are creative geniuses. This video was made by an analytical genius. If you look at the comment section you will see that its composed mostly of people who notice small details or who have good humor. This channel attracts high IQ people
Honestly, what they say in interviews is often bullshit (this is typical of a lot of bands, actually). They absolutely do plan this shit out, they'll even admit this in some interviews and then downplay it in others.
@@masterchain3335 I know part of it is intuitive but yes you are right. Most of the time artists downplay their theory knowledge.
"Man, I'm happy I'm not the one choosing"Oh, It'll be Dancers to a Discordant System Yogev.

Shhht
She might need it
It's amazing how you instantly get a flowing groove when the hi-hat comes in, it's like the entire song changes, but it doesn't.
Agreed!
Ah yes, another underappreciated masterpiece from Koloss. This one is really fun to play to say the least.
I find this song extra cool because it really illustrates the relationship between polyrythm and polymeter (ie subdivisions) due to the relatively slow tempo; if you tap your foot on the '1' of the 4/4 and clap on the '1' of the riffs, you're playing a wholenote 16:17 polyrythm!
Not A Millions Subs Yet, But Closer And Closer! See You All There!
This is so crazy. The best part is that I don't primarily appreciate the concepts (albeit it is magical), but I love the music.
If it makes you feel any better, with Meshuggah even those of us nodding our heads like we know what's going on are barely keeping up 😅
Meshuggah's magic is that their music is somehow both incredibly complex when you break it down but you can still headbang and groove to it.
@@facemash Well let's see if I've watched enough of Yogev's vids to explain: the host is always 4/4 (of the vids I've watched). So no matter how crazy it all gets, you can always find the steady 1 2 3 4 somewhere in the drums, which is what we bang to :)
There's more.
You can think of the harmonic rhythm of the fourth riff - roughly, the rhythm with which the notes change - as being in triple time. The contour is: minor 3, sharp 4, perfect 5 (with root notes in between). You can hear it trace the accents of the 13/8 phrase, but it only lines up every third bar of 13/8 because there are only two accent notes in each bar. So the melody itself is kind of its own little polymeter.
_Then_ during the second half, they continue this as they start switching notes out. The melody still follows the triple-time contour, but with certain notes in the 3-4-5 cycle swapped for higher notes for a kind of melodic crescendo effect.
This is my favorite Meshuggah song.
holy shit, that's mind blowing
This is a technique called an isorhythm. Meshuggah uses this quite a lot. The prechorus riff of stengah, guitar solo riff of bleed, The entirety of the first 2 minutes of pineal gland optics, the riffs in dancers right after the modulation section, the descending riff before the guitar solo in I am Colossus, the intros and outros of swarm, the outro riff of demiurge, and the verse riff of Nostrum are all examples of this. It's like a cycle within a cycle.
There are probably more examples of it, but those ones stand out to me.
@@drumkidstu I had noticed it in other Meshuggah songs but I wasn't aware of the term! Thanks!
fuck this shit lol i quit
Something feels so "drunken" about this song. I tap my foot and sometimes I am suddenly tapping backwards (down on the upbeat). But then at times everything lines up and it just sounds amazing... probably because its been slowly aligning and I am subconsciously waiting for it. Tension and release. Fantastic stuff. I wonder if they graph it out.
The tapping down on the upbeat is very stronk in Monstrocity aswell tbh
for real! while playing it it grooves so hard, but is so meditative at the same time
Love the way the accents cycle around to different places in the host beat, makes this song such a bop! Great video as always
Edit: love the gf stealing the headphones again
yes the snare of this band can totaly be an obsession. I analyse each songs of them just in esperance to one day succesfully play one of their songs for like 4years... (I had to learn play drums first, cauz didn't know much on that in the past.)
A channel that analyses progressive metal?
HOW DID I NOT DISCOVER THIS CHANNEL SOONER!
The hardest part about playing these kinds of riffs on guitar is changing key/chords mid rhythmic pattern. It always feels so awkward. Incredible analysis as always!
Missed opportunity to do Jens face in the thumbnail.
Holy shit...I never realized that it stays in 17/16. I always interpreted the harmonic changes as turnarounds that resolve but you’re right...the key change is just happening in the middle of the riff. That’s insane!
I knew Meshuggah were geniuses this guy just confirms it. 🤘🤘
dude, these kinds of videos are so hard to find, thank you so much for making these. I love this kind of rhythmically mind-bending music and your videos are so great for finding new concepts, new musicians, new music, and new rhythmic puzzles to solve. thank you so much, please don't stop making these
One of my favourite things in this song is "a melodic polymeter" in the 4th riff. The riff consists of two "phrases" (as it was shown on the paper), but the melodic pattern - of three. So there is a constant shift between rhythm and melody. And even though they sometimes change accents, the melodic pattern stays the same. Exactly the same thing happens in "Dancers...", pretty much through the whole song.
Called an isorhythm. Simply put you have a rhythmic figure of let's say 8 notes, but a pitch cycle of 7 notes so it'll always save shifting. Prechorus of stengah, guitar solo riff of bleed, as you mentioned dancers, the first 2 and a half minutes of pineal gland Optics, the descending riff on I am colossus right before the guitar solo, the intro and outro of swarm, the outro of demiurge and there are probably some on TVSOR as well, but I can't think of any more off the top of my head.
spent half my life not understanding how this riff works. kept counting 17 and never figured out where it reset. now it makes total sense visually. and explains why the harmonic change mid-riff is so sick sounding.
The riff #4 explanation is a life saver. Thanks.
I know this doesn't count as a vote, but I'd love to see Stengah!
I’ve never seen visual presentations like this with drum ed content creators . This approach is really helpful when trying to grasp these rhythms that tend to mess with your brain as you attempt to break them down as time signatures. Excellent content!
I would like to know more about those carcasses of gaming controllers hanging. Also that you for everything dude. You're like a messiah spreading the word of the one great Meshuggah.
the freaking concept of this song and how they implemented it, holy cow
Wow. I graduated music school in 2006. This is easily the best music lesson in I've had nearly 20 years. I have not once had the ambition to break down a Meshuggah song. I don't even know where you get the gumption to start. Very well done. 5 stars. Subscribed.
Can't believe you did my favorite Meshuggah song!! Listening to riff#4 live on concert was a life-changing experience. Thanks for this!!
visualizing the song this way?! you just opened my eyes! thank you so much!
Been a fan since the early days but this is definitely the best Meshuggah song ever. Quite close to the best song ever in general.
It cant be coincidence im listening to this in my car in the drive through and I get notified about this
i'll watch this later but just gotta say the title speaks to me
The intro riff visual is great because you can get a better idea of what's happening structurally in the song.
Man, I appreciate you explaining Patreon and giving a glimpse behind the scenes. I have to admit I didn't realize it worked like that. I fully support what you're doing here and love your execution. I'll have to investigate Patreon
“Do Not Look Down” is one of my all time favs from Meshuggah. “Monstrocity” is probably my top..
11:27 The headphones that were "stolen" from you in Video "Meshuggahs' 'Clockwork' is all 2's and 3's" at 14:16 were put back!
These videos are phenomenal, thanks so much for putting all this effort in to show us this. I was hoping Nostrum was picked because it's a mind bender, but I didn't realize how intricate this song actually was.
"What are your pronouns?"
"Rhy/them"
I pretty much understand all of this and my mind is still blown that they can just use 9 beats from a riff and transition perfectly right back into the intro riff and make it all end seamlessly
Stengah next bro!!!! Such an interesting song. I understand every part except the guitar solo part! Do that one!!!!
These videos make the listening experience wayy fucking cooler man
This channel is so special, jeez. Such good educational tools you use.
4:46 "... I'm such a djentleman"
I teach music theory to classical musician kids, and they all freak out at anything odd meter, so we clapped "short, short, long, short, short, 1 2 3 4 5 6". and I drew the circles on the board. Once they had it tight I put the track on, should have seen their faces!! Love using meshuggah in those lessons and it's actually quite impressive how rhythmic people can be when you're not looking at standard notation and just move your body. Great video, and thank you for the inspiration!
Amazing!
And yes you're ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! I also believe rhythm is more approachable when you try non western ways.
Epic!
Much respect for taking the time to analyze and summarize such complex songs. Thank you!
This is beautiful! If you notice the main 17/16 riff is aligned again with the 4/4 beat every 16 (4/4)bars (it just changes color on your paper) ;-)
Just found your channel..... I never realized just how much I enjoy arts and crafts with music theory! Lol
;) As always clear, concise, focused, easy to understand for those looking to learn and most importantly respectful of the source material and the intentions of the writers.
i discovered this channel 2 days ago and oh man, you're great. Thx to you i now understand the greatness of meshuggah much better.
This channel deserves a few million subscribers 👏
This genuinely allowed me to learn the kick drum pattern so I can now play this on a single kick.
Amazing !
I really wonder if Meshuggah can even create non-complicated rhythmic pattern music.
Even your great visualization and explanation makes my brain go: WTF? REWATCH!
Anyways... here´s your Cattle Decapitation reminder ;)
just listen to The Last Vigil lmao
the amount of permanent markers this dude must go through. love this style of visual music representation
Dude if I can get a sponsorship from Sharpie, man that will be so coooool
Very creative , elegant and effective way to break this down, but to also illustrate what is going on. Love your breakdown and the vid!!!
Damn, this song is the only one from meshuggah that I can play. I do it all by ear, but damn when you explain it it sounds way more complicated !
The tone shift blew my mind. How the hell can you think outside the box that way
the illustration of the beats make understanding the song so much easier, thanks so much!
that determination to explain a meshuggah song.. subbed! cant wait for more!
Your content is simply amazing. I sincerly hope it'll pay off, you deserve it.
This was the song that actually got me in to the band. I've always been a metalhead but every time someone tried to get me in to these guys it was always one of those ultra complex polyrythmic songs and it just sounded like chaos to me, and not the good kind. It just sounded like they had no idea what they were doing even though I knew everything they did was on purpose.
Later on I listened to Catch 33 actively all the way through and heard how the rhythms would go different directions then meet up, then split off again, then meet up again and so on. That's when I finally "got" them.
Dancers! Its my favorite song from meshuggah hands down.
Dude, this is pure public service. Love it! Keep it up!
That sneaky hand at 11:20
Hell yeah! I’ve been wanting this song!
Keeps these kinds of breakdowns coming and I will definitely keep watching.
Love the videos, great work!
Another amazing analysis. Thank you!

Almost every song, from every album worth a deep analysis. And man, I will follow you forever.
Anyway, congratulations for you for the so didactic and visual method you have choose and do so well to make us benefit more from those masterpieces. I really admire not only your entire comprehension but also the way you explain it and make it all accessible to us.
PS: If you can show us how many things are happening in 0 : 47 to 1 : 09 into "Djebelaki Zomn" - or why not the entire song !! - I will be so glad. It's so fucking deep and complex.
On god amazing content. Keep it up man!
Nice work dude
Fascinating. Excellent breakdown!
