The Parallax effect in music

- Time Consuming Ep #42 features the song 'Parallax' by the band 'Comb'. This band, led by guitarist Jonathan Hazan, has released their first EP 'The Violent Heart' in late 2020 and are working on EP #2!
The Parallax phenomenon is very interesting. It discusses the way depth effects your perception of movement. And in this song, we tried to get the same effect though music.
Special thanks to my AWESOME patrons:

My favorite music theory UA-camr right now

Damn this is exciting to hear you have no idea
Same! Made me get into playing different time signatures :)

Yes between him and Adam Neeley
I reckon the perfect band to talk about when discussing "parallax" would be Car Bomb! Keen to see a video about one of their songs
their song "Sets" blows my mind \m/
@@ethangueldenzopf3808 it would be kind of funny to see Dissect Yourself broken down.
The channel “Metal Music Theory” has a vid on rhythmic parallax and Car Bomb!
Car Bomb's set gave me a migraine at a festival I was at 2 years ago. Insane stuff.
You did it, you used humor somehow to make it not only funny but make the video more palatable and easier to understand. This is definitely a very helpful video for people to write more precise drum parts.
Happy you like it !
2:48 "shtok, shtok" is "shut up shut up" in hebrew
so cool to see comb here! Great video, as usual :)
he also says mah instead of what at 1:!7 :D
you have the best music theory channel on youtube, stay heavy! \m/
Wow, thanks!

This song is still high up in my Playlist!!
love it!
I appreciate y’all looking at these music concepts practically. I think we’re heading in a direction where music education doesn’t have to be stuffy and overly proper for people to feel like they’re learning.
Hell yeah. That's what this channel is all about. I think music theory can be taught in a way more approachable way !
And there I was, thinking that the parallax effect was that after listening to The Parallax by Between the Buried and Me you compare every song you hear to it and get disappointed... This one is super awesome as well.

Yes!! More features with your friends! This was fun. And very cute when you synchronised actions.
The best channel, so many details i could watch this videos over and over for years! Thank you for all your work!
This is one of the best videos you've ever made!
Ohhhhhhhhh I AGREEEEEE
The quality of the videos is increasing very fast! Good job! Keep it up!
Glad you think so!
Do Car Bomb next. Please

Love your videos! Hope you grow a lot to keep putting out this great content
this is the best content on UA-cam
i think i may have found my new favorite youtube channel... you are SO informative and entertaining !!!
Thanks a lot !!!!
This is why I paid attention in maths class
you're just having way too much fun with the format aren't you :)
hahahhahahahahha
evildrganymede - And why the hell shouldn't they? These guy's are masters with what
they do, no question about that!!
I think I would honestly enjoy this even if I knew nothing about music.
My brain tied itself into a knot listening to this.
I am an ok player but now learning so much from this channel. Thank you for this awesome content.
Love your art and science brother... keep up the great work!
Parallax is sick, love the drumming.
Again, excellent work !
I like that you implemented the perspective of an parallax, gives me another perspective of thinking about music, great work.
This is awesome!
Great video and demonstration!
Most fascinating thing I've watched for a long time.
Underrated UA-camr.
So cool to check it come together like that. Mad riff!
This video was awesome! Loved the song too.
you guys are so lovable!
Oh look, a St. Anger snare!
This channel is awesome.
What a wholesome video! :)
Nice song, by the way!
Good stuff. I don't know a lot of musicians that think about music as deeply as I do so it's nice to hear someone speaking the language of my thoughts.
Mannnnnnn loving this. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Keep it coming.
I did my dissertation on this concept in 2015. Such an amazing and underrated rhyming idea
I could watch your videos all day bro
That was a really cool concept man! Probably not what I as a drummer would have written for that part, but it sure was fitting to the concept of the song and a very cool exercise. Will definitely try it out during my next practice!
Love your videos btw, have given me a lot of help with particularly Meshuggah songs!
This is awesome :)
"it.. move"
-Fredrik Thordendal
Yeah, this kind of shifting is essentially Meshuggah's bread an butter. (at least since after "Nothing")
That was a lot of fun lol, alongside being informative as always
Glad to hear it!
Super clever-from an old fusion drummer!👍👍
Do Car Bomb!
Dude you're hilarious. Misha shared your The Walk breakdown and I'm hooked haha. Can't wait for more vids!!
Waiting for Ben's solo every time it ends lmao
Got your Shwesmo-Gnawhat ad going into this video! Nice, guess I'll spend a few more mins watching you than I expected...
LOVE
I don't know how I missed this video but I did...
That said it was a great video as usual, imma follow your buddy.
I also wanted to mention that I got an ad in the middle of the video... An ad from Meinl featuring you!
For an instant I wondered if it was my phone going crazy (which does regularly).
Anyways, I saved it to watch later.
Cheers from France! 🍻
Thanks for watching Kevin !
Nice !
Thanks!
As a non drummer I often struggle to come up with the right groove when writing songs. This is very interesting to see
Just as the video was finishing I found myself riffing on the guitar pattern and my imagined drum pattern switched and came out a nice slow swing. It mostly works but I really like the nested poly feel of the piece as you have it which would be sacrificed if you used a swing underneath it.
Yogev, I got the perfect song for Time Consuming: Dance of Eternity by Dream Theater
Ooooo, good one 👌
I've been really loving your videos! I'd love to hear you break down that bridge section in Haken's Puzzle Box. I can never quite understand it.
That misplaced snare at 2:20 hurt my feelings. And then, it got repeated on FOUR LINES. Please let me die.
(Nice video, seriously.)
Yeah threw me off for a bit
YEAH YEAH MY BAADDDDDDDD
@@YogevGabay hehe no worries
I thought I was going insane!
Huh? How?
I'm glad to see you not holding back with the editing on these videos, that was insane. And I've learned about so many great artists from them in so many different genres
Glad you like them!
best of the best !
Commenting for Car Bomb request.
יא גבר!
ממש אהבתי תסרטון כל הכבוד על ההשקעה
You just keep crushing it with every video. Keep it up Yogev!
(Also, despite the poll results, I would love to see a Stengah video someday 🙂🙃)
hahahahaha if you think I'm not gonna cover the songs who don't win the polls, you're in for a treat !
@@YogevGabay ❤️
Liked before even watching, haha :)
Could you do a video on either don cabellero or hella? Both bands have some amazing riffs
Great content Yogev!!! All of your videos are really interesting, and are helping me as a guitarist and composer. I wanted to ask if there is the possibility to explore some of these concepts about rhythm but in Latin (or Latin American) music. Cheers!
I'm looking into some latin stuff, I'm just not so familiar with the genre so it might take a while !
Since you featured Matt Garstka in a previous episode, I think it pertinent to mention the song "Arithmophobia" - That song might require a series on its own to explain.
Haha....I thought you were talking about my channel ;) when rap meets the parallax effect 😎👊 big up
Well I didn't but I'm sure gonna check it out !
7:10 **ST. ANGER INTENSIFIES**
hahahahahahahahahah YYEESSS
Funny, entertaining and deeply insightful.
And you're so good you should make a band..
: )
p.s. ok, yet another subscription...
First! Great content as always!
Legend!
Awesome work! I'd love you to take a look at Heilung's Svanrand... probably not the most complex polyrythm ever but a sick beat nonetheless
Nice
A parallax view that you can't unscrew and it all just gets so tight?
I counted along in 3 and also 6. It made sense if i just listed to the drums.
I was thinking more of a triplet feel in my head
🔥🔥🔥
Did you drum on the Comb EP? It’s great btw, thanks for introducing it here
Yogev has indeed blessed the E.P. with his amazing drumming! :)
Yes sir!
or you could play 31/16 as 7 quarter notes and a dotted eighth. or you could play it as 9 dotted eighths and one quarter note.
Could you show us How to count the timing on a Dillinger escape plan song?
Chaotic on several...I'm a fan btw
Are you going to be doing an analysis of Gojira - Into the storm?
Dude you're awesome, how do you have only 40k subs?
HI, it was 30K last month, so can't complain !
1:28 Was expecting him to play Wonderwall
damn, what a missed opportunity :(
Nice, How about a ride and bell pattern
Science!
Could someone tell what are those chord progressions with quartal flavour?
Yallah!
Yogev, what about collab with Ben Koller from Converge?
I couldn’t find this song on Spotify....
they say the Devil is in the detail , now what is the effect of making devil horn's sign ?
Ожидание медиаданных will always be a supreme form of VFX :Ъ
That riff feels so weird to listen to and I like it
That's like a description of my musical career
Haha, liked it.
Freaking amazing channel!!! I've been devouring stuff on here.
There's only one problem I see with the notation of this groove. The 2nd snare hit during the first bar of 8 beats should be on 6, not on 7 as notated. So, the 'accents' in that bar should be 1, 4, 6. Otherwise, very cool representation of a very cool groove.
You sir, are correct. I didn't notice at all while filming !
If you have to spend all your time counting that, when do you get to enjoy the playing?
Anyone else notice the "Sharon is cool" shirt? lol
reminds me of Intronaut :)
Well at least that wasn't weird.
The Hurt That Finds You First by Meshuggah and of the song , the same thing ,I guess
And that’s how you justify a Patreon sub.
You should do Pray by Gojira I think you will love it
Did you consider treating triplets as the primary subdivision and the duplets as the variations? Basically playing the 8s as 3-3-2 (a short 9) and the 6 and 9 as the primary triplet grooves? That might hide the asymmetry better and increase the flow and/or smoothness. Just a thought.
I did try it actually!
It does work, but the 4 worked better in my opinion which is why I kept it !
@@YogevGabay Cool! Would've loved to see that experiment. These "How Do I Create a Drum Part For This?" videos are my favorite!
