YES!!! Thank you so much for finally breaking this beast song down for me!!!
this better get pinned lol
@@SaadiAWS102 im gonna be obset if it isnt
@@hellion6504 if you wrote obzet it would've been such a cool misspelling lol.
Here’s a visualized/geometric version of Spasm you might enjoy - this is from a rhythm game that sort of turns riffs into shapes, and Meshuggah being what they are, their songs turn into really cool shapes :) :
ua-cam.com/video/nHMEm7r17tQ/v-deo.html
But this song has Nothing to do with Obzen..
20 years old and Spasm still kills.

the fact that it's 20 now is insane

No way you missed this riff. This is one of my favorite parts about this song.
I always 'heard' it, I just never noticed it's SO consistent and also NOT in 4/4! I guess I just never paid attention to it for some reason. It's constructed so well !
That hidden riff is exactly why I love this song so much! It's like a steady anchor to ground the whole thing, but it's sooo subtle amidst the loud, heavy spasming, it gives a feeling of holding on to a thin thread trying not to be swept away by a violent storm. Absolutely magical!
You missed THAT riff/lick in Spasm!? I can name two of the riff you discussed that I missed, but that high dissonent riff together with the heavy chorus riff was the thing that got me hooked on this song when it came out.
Same, that atmospheric lead/lick/wtv is what makes Spasm stand out to me as a less typical sounding Meshuggah song, alongside the whispered vocals. Not sure how anyone could miss it but hey, that's the beauty of music, everyone hears different things!
Haha. Same, I havent noticed multiple riffs you showed but always notice the 6/8 riff. I guess everyone's ears are different. Loving Mayshuggah!

+++this.
This riff was kind of a hook for me that rubbed up against (what I thought) was just basically a song in 7/4.
Hell yes! I've recently rediscovered Spasm. The song is such a groovy, forgotten about gem
Who forgot this song?
This channel is the best thing to ever happen to a meshuggah fan! Keep it up!
Agreeeed!
Meshuggah's rhythms are a bit too wild for my taste, so I always listen for something to latch on and bang to. That said, this 'hidden riff' always stood out to me.
Shows how differently we listen to music, even as musicians.

That hidden riff is why Spasm is one of my favorites.
This song goes so stupid hard. It's unique even for Meshuggah.
I LOVE SPASM! That little solo is an all time favorite
This is brilliant. Thanks for this amazing explanation!
This is quality content. Thanks for doing this one
thanks for covering Spasm, its one of my favorite songs by Meshuggah
This is one of my favorites from them. Thanks for dissecting, Yogev. You're the man!
Love your content and the effort you always go through. You deserve 100x the subs, keep it up!
Going to see them live tomorrow, very excited. Excellent video as always!
Man im jealous, hope you have fun \m/
I'll see them for the first time in September 🤘🤘
See you in 013 then haha
@@camerontgore September here! You will love it
Yo I'm seeing them in Sept as well!
Underrated as FUCK.
I see them live tomorrow in the Netherlands, can't wait to headbang to those wicked djenty timings!
HOW WAS ITTTT
@@YogevGabay It was huge! There was so much power in the music and the many light effects matched the music perfectly, it really blew my mind
Great birthday gift!
Love this song!!! Mayshuggah is the besttttt
I'm a fan! 😅😁 keep it up Yogev, you made the world of music secure...
Yezzzzzzzzzzzzz love the breakdown as always. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Brilliant as always.... Mid-section of Nebulous, you know you wanna do it Yogev
This part of Spasm makes it quite unique among other Meshuggah songs, because I don't remember any other piece in their entire discography having such a clean, clear and stable melodic counterpoint that goes throughout the entire piece only with minor changes applied to it.
This song was one of the first from Meshuggah that truly struck me when I first started listening to them waaay back. In a sense, rediscovering it through your perspective made me realize that the song actually has the same sonic mindbending quality as "Catch 33", which has been my favorite Meshuggah record, and one of my all time faves for quite some time. Oh, and the whining worked. *SUBSCRIBED*

One of my favorite meshuggah songs... that part after the snare interlude SLAPS
One of my favorite meditation songs :) It's so trance inducing
Awesome!
thanks! my favorite Meshuggah song
Ahh thank you, this song is so fucking awesome but often slept on, good going
Was listening to this on the way home from school what a coincidence I get it in my feed
that snare part is really interesting and almost relatable. I can see how maybe whomever wrote that part was just plugging sequencer notes into their midi and came up with this wacky disorienting part. so cool. this channel is great, yogev. yalla!
I think Tomas actually wrote this one.
Meshuggah is a spiritual experience i swear. Brilliant
Really nice
This is my most played song by meshuggah and yet i see nothing about it anywhere so this is a refreshing sight to see.
damn, mate. you can't imagine how i love small chanells like yours because you have a feel of interaction with content creator. don't stop, my brother!
Not planning to ! thanks !!
Spasm is the most danceable track of meshuggah, and your videos are wonderful
awesome
Awww don’t stress about the stream bud, it’ll be great!
hahahah dude, everyone keeps quoting: 'No one knows how I goes!' I'm like... . . . . . .
I'M TRYING MY BESSTTTTTT
Yogev!!! Demiurge!! For crying out loud
Great video, I love that song.
I finally managed to record and post a cover of ligature marks.. my 3rd Meshuggah cover, not an easy task.. lol
I remember learning Spasm on drums back in the day and I remember using this ongoing riff as a timekeeper in my head.
The "hidden" riff is amazing, honestly makes the song, as you said it's always playing!! Mesmerizing as usual haha
RATIONAL GAZE!
Yogev, love your shit dude!! Really appreciate you for making these video. Oh and also, loved seeing you play the gig at the barbie with Ron Minis :) Hopefully more to come!
OHHHHH man that show was so fun !!!!
I love this song-- a gem along with Organic Shadows. But I also love the humility you show. Not at first consciously recognizing the six-beat nature of the phrase and telling us about it is rad, because it shows that even talented musicians like yourself don't always hear everything the first time.
You've had this angle a few times on your channel-- a teacher who still learns. And I really appreciate it!
Oh man, the moment you think you know everything is the moment you stop growing.
There's so much knowledge around that thinking you can cover even a significant portion of it is simply wrong.
Happy to always keep finding more and more !
my fav song
I think the same thing as "hidden riff" but melody is in Dancers' chorus with pattern of 5 descending quarter notes x 6 times + 2 remaining = 32 quarters.
Can't wait to see them in Manchester UK on Saturday 28th May!
one of my favourite Shuggah song of all times
This hidden riff makes this song so special!
oh my good i didnt expect this
I love that Nolly supports you on Patreon. So cool.
Nice
Man I'm still blown away by this you have NO idea
Never missed it, it's one of the reasons I love this song. Spasm and Closed eye visuals are my favorite songs, hands down
always there for me
I thought this video was going to be about the lead riff being played a half step down at the end. It took me YEARS to notice that. I'd been analysing the song for years and learning the pattern of each riff. I even learned the drum solo pattern. But I NEVER noticed the half step down. I only noticed it because I skipped to the end of the song by accident once. When I did that, it absolutely blew my mind
HAHAHAHA THAT HAPPENED TO ME AS WELL
this guy makes a huge labor for society
Dude you're awesome! Keep up the great work. You should be doing these for huge corporations too cause they're so well done. Very much looking forward to the "I" stream!
Oh that can be awesome !!1
Yogev I just wanted to say I’m a drummer and huuuuuuuge Meshuggah nerd and I’ve struggled to play that snare solo in spasm for years. I can play the rest of the song but always get lost at the snare solo, I just can’t count it consistently, as soon as the crash comes in I end up playing some hits too early or late. This visual representation FINALLY unlocked it for me. Thank you so much 👏🏻
You have no idea how happy this comment makes me feel.
These comments are worth all the hard work I put into these.
Super happy it helped !!
My favourite Meshuggah song, and one of the few I learned to play! I can only feel the first riff as 3 7s and a 4, if I feel it as 8 bars of 4 I get lost! I've always loved the fills out of each section.
Greaaaat
You sir , are fuckin amazing .
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man we Meshuggahnauts salute you!!! Love all your content!!! Can we maybe hear some of Freddy T’s solos broken down..?🤷Talk about some mind expanding/mind altering rhythm inside of rhythms. Keep it up Yogev!!!
just when i click on this video an ad called shwesmo appears with you yogeb and the indian guy that counts in konnakol
Also, Break Those Bones… has a 4/4 ambient riff that plays through almost the entire song, it kinda cuts out during the first verse but comes back halfway through
That whole album is really cool and unique. I first saw Meshuggah live between Chaosphere and Nothing when they were first playing stuff like Stengah and it was crazy to hear for the first time.
I think it's actually 6/4! I always loved that bit about the intro: how they have their usual "polyrhythm" playing against the normal 4/4, but this one throws a 6 on top of that whole mess! It's crazy
OH NOOO YOU'RE RIGHTTTTTTTT
So... pretty much every Meshuggah song is math puzzle in audio form LOL I love it!
Yalla!
Can you do concatenation?
Didn't know that the snare in the opening riff was counting away from the guitar like that, really awesome! Also, I think Closed Eye Visuals also has a high riff like you described, either in 6/8 or 3/4, I'm not sure
I enjoy this videos more than Meshuggah itself :v
Jens actually got the album credits for writing this gem...
Great videos Yogev! Maybe Future Breed Machine next time?
אני אף פעם לא באמת מבין משהו מכל התאוריה הזאת אבל עדיין רואה כל הסרטון שלך!
חחחחחחחח גדול. אם עדיין לא ויתרת, אני את שלי עשיתי
In dancers to the discordant system, lead playing like 5/4 thing in verse and after the solo. So its Triple polirythm
It’s hilarious because the riff you missed is the one riff I always latch onto when I listen, it’s one of my favorite Meshuggah songs. Btw, if you ever get the chance, the post solo breakdown in Monstrocity (where Jens just repeats “Monstroscity”) is one riff I just cannot for the life of me figure out
I follow you and we will be, always Yogev! This is GOLD!!! All the videos here where i learned all prog ingredients for my "soon musical journey".
Sorry to brought you this Yogev, Could you please analyze Plini's "Impulse Voices" track no.5 Impulse Voices, hahahaha, he is the one brought
me back to play again the guitar since i stop for 9 years...THANK YOU we will appreciate it!
Will listen !!

Haha, joke's on you, I was highly aware of that riff! I've always seen Spasm as an absolute underdog and analysed it really hard.
Can I have my medal now?
that lead riff thing was one of the first things i noticed about spasm when i first got into the nothing album so i would like my medal too please thanks yogev
Indeed sir, indeed.
Spasm - their best song, IMO
I was waiting for you to explain how the lead part is in 6/8 haha, now I'm here trying to figure it out. The high accent is on the 5th quaver assuming that's the subdivision, so I'm slightly confused. Otherwise though an awesome break down, this track is killer!
Another edit haha, the first time around it's on the 5th accent but every other time it's on the 6th you are correct
You're right yes, the high note is subbeat #5 !
The high guitar notes (like the hidden riff here) are a common layer in meshuggah songs in contrast with the heavy riffings; we just call them "panic"
Awesome video! I would like to see the dreamy part of song "Stifled" at 3:41 also by Meshuggah. Cheers!
somehow in my head I always put 2 extra notes in that riff so it would be 4/4, this was unexpected 😮
They should definitely release an acapella track of that guitar line would be so great.
I'll sing it for you !
Hey dude this is fuckin awesome! Bro can you do the bridge/solo of nostrum?
Probably my favorite Meshuggah song. Also comparatively little screaming so it's usually the one I show to non metal people.
I knew about the "hidden riff" AHAHA!!
Pls pls pls analyze Born In Dissonance
Amazing as always :) Have You every listen band Confessor ? ( apparently its called technical doom metal ) it's bit different than bands like Meshuggah because tempo it's much slower but in my opinion they do some crazy rhythmic stuff .
❤️
Great work! What about some song from Chaosphere? Corridor Of Chameleons, Sane or Elastic would be wonderful. Thank you.
you're right, I only did 1 song from that album !
marrow off of koloss would be a really cool song to hear broken down, despite all the slides and weird repetitions its still so damn groovy
Did you already do Glints Colide? One of my favs
dang.... but still waiting for Nostrum :D
Would be really glad and appreciate it, if you could ever make a breakdown of the beast in "Nostrum" from The Violent Sleep of Reason Album, what an underrated masterpiece, Fredrik's best guitar solo genius, in my opinion, thanks! 🤘🙏
That's such an underrated song! did you see our arrangement for it?
