One of the most beautiful films ever created. Each frame is a piece of art, every movement deliberate. When it gets dark, it gets really dark, and when it's light, it brings you true joy. The Secret of Kells, aswell as the two other movies by this studio, Song of the Sea and Wolf Walkers, are European Ghibli films to me.
It's a small detail but what I noticed was the ear cuffs. The Dark Age Irish never wore earrings but they did wear ear cuffs. They really did do their research!
Magnificent animation and the overall style has attracted me to watch this beautiful film, and your video perfectly describes the authenticity of the film.
Wonderful review! I love this film. I've seen some people complain of its simplicity, but that is deliberately done to symbolize stylization and flatness of Medieval art. 2D animation was the perfect way to bring this story to life. I love the many beautiful details that are similar to illuminated manuscripts, especially the moving ones that are designed to look just like the ones in the Book of Kells such as the 2 little critters who are eating a Eucharist wafer.
To think I had ancestry rooted from all Gaelic and Cymric cultures that almost got wiped from existence apart from living in my genetics since mass English speaking Celts mixed with British colonies is really sad and feels like some lost nostalgia I never had.
