just small correction, crom cruach is not depicted as a snake, as from a mythological point of view it wouldnt make sense as patrick drove them all out in addition to his overall design. its more likely crom is depicted as a péist(pay sh t) a large irish water dragon in the form of an eel,its said that only the greatest heros could defeat them, this is why Aisline was warning him that crom was tricking him
The Secret of Kells was such an odd movie for me to watch. Loved Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers. Did watch The Breadwinner but that's a very tonal shift. But I never understood SoK, watched it twice and understood bit more but watching this video, I never realised all that history into it. Really fascinating actually.
Thanks for the information. There are two things that I think are mistaken though. A fairy asking wasps not to sting someone cannot be taken in of itself to mean that they were considered fully sentient. Asking a tree or insect to do or not do something can just be considered a poetic way of her controlling elements of creation. After all, it would be boring to be literal in only using terms that describe the natural sciences. Also, with what you mentioned about the book being made of paper, to my understanding pages from books in Ireland at that time were more often made from cow hides are some kind of leather.
I also have a theory that maybe the snake form could be represented live of jormungandr, the Norse world serpent. The Vikings are the main antagonists of the film, so and by the time of the setting, that cult of Thor was big in Ireland, so why not connect the two myths together?
I was also thinking that the version of crom in the secret of kells is based on Jörmungandr cause of how when it’s eye it taken it starts to eat it’s own tail
I have a university project on this movie. Where I have to answer three questions, how is this movie a post-modern hagiography, what elements of history did this movie get right and what aspects are creatively recast. This video helped a lot thank you
Thank you for this video, I was looking to learn more about the book of Kells. I just watched the movie. I felt it was missing the aspect of religion, the explanation of the book's meaning. I really enjoyed still, the visuals were so esthetic and pleasing. I recommend it 😍
this video is enlightning the film is impressive artistically but does a less impressive job in the dialogue unfortunately until the end of the film there wasn't enough information about the book of kells to convince me of why was it so important ...after that i thought the book must be a symbol of the art and the spiritual part of human beings in contrast to the uncle's rigid and purely practical thinking. i personally prefer song of the sea that i watched before but both are mesmerizing films. next is wolfwalkers !!

As a Irish Pagan, This Makes Me Happy. I love this movie.

You’re probably right as it is an ouroboros
Most of mythologies include a snake eating it's tail, so it kind of makes sense
This was a movie of my childhood. Want to rewatch it now 😂
It’s free on youtube right now- the full length movie.
@@LostNFoundASMR The movie is on UA-cam
Good timing with this video. I'm studying The Secret of Kells this week. Thank you for this well made video.

I'm irish and I learned a lot from this. Thank you 😊
So real quick: those stinging wasps aren't gall wasps. gall wasps aren't aculeates and so they cannot sting
