Now Pig has to cover the rest of Tomm Moore’s Irish Folklore trilogy. The Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers are both incredible movies in their own rights.
As an Irish person, I really appreciate you bringing this film to a larger audience. Honeslty needs more recognition. Irish animation and art in general is on another level, I feel like alot of our culture appreciate art and it shows through our media.
I watched it when I was little and loved it. I forgot the name, and so I spent 10+ years trying to remember the name of the movie (I didn't think about asking anyone about it).
Cartoon Saloon is honestly such an amazing animation company that I wished had more recognition, they written and animated WolfWalkers, Song Of The Sea, and animated The BreadWinner all of these movies in my opinion are gut wrenching and just pure art
I’m American but Song of the Sea is one of my favorite childhood films of all time. I’ll subscribe in hopes that the creator decides to cover that magical movie
I'm glad to hear this! I saw the trailer and thought this would be good to watch with my kids, but the thumbnail for this video said "not for kids", so I wondered. Sounds like he just said that b/c of the dark/scary parts.
Im not Irish - Im Welsh - but any Celtic acknowledgement makes me so happy! I love Celtic myths and stories, glad you've brought this great film and source to so many peoples attention!
I was getting ready to watch this movie today!!! This is my twin sister and I's childhood movie. A lot of our relatives and ancestors are Irish, Scottish and Swedish. I wanted to dress like Aisling for Halloween when I was 9 yrs old. I'm 22 and now I might dress like her this upcoming Halloween. This movie is so good and makes me cry every time 😢😭❤
As a creative person with a massive art block that has lasted for over a year I found myself crying with your words at the end of the video. Thank you so much for this one! I hope you can review Wolfwalkers and Song of the Sea by the same creators.
Tomms a god damn national treasure, it's good to see his work get recognised. Shit, even here in Ireland he and his team don't get the notice they deserve so it's nice to see some appreciation for the best art to come out of here in recent memory. Love that you went in on the mythology too!
As an Irish person who's been a fan of yours for a few years now, I really wasn't expecting this appreciation towards our art, culture and mythology 😭 thank you
This movie is AMAZING. I watched it as a kid and never really got the message, but still, at that age, I was able to appreciate how visually impressive this movie is. It deserves all the success it has acheived.
I was born in russia and grew up in america and this was one of my favorite movies as a kid, I absolutely loved it and it made me love irish culture as well
I didn’t expect to cry so much at 20:10 I had lost my passion for art for a year now, and I feel like I’m drowning everyday. It’s such an isolating and disheartening place to be, especially since I’ve always used art to express myself even as a child. I’ve limited myself to rules and this idea of “perfection” that I had lost why I loved art. Thank you so much. I’ve been searching for the fire for a year and I finally found the spark I needed. ❤
I watched this as a kid, and it sat on the back of my head for years. I forgot the plot or how it looked like, but I couldn't forget that it scared me and made me sad, that I didn't wanna go back to it again. A month or so ago, I watched it with my friend then realized its fantastical aesthetic has affected a good chunk of my life. I'm so glad I went back and remembered that awe I felt back then
THIS VIDEO CAME OUT AT A PERFECT TIME FOR ME OH MY GOD! I have been looking more into my Irish heritage to feel more connected to my roots and for years This movie has always made me feel so connected to it even if it was only just now with this video had pointed out the more cultural parts that I never knew as a kid. Amazing video and I am so glad more people will know about this beautiful film.
Irish culture is so interesting and beautiful. I really love the message behind this film and I love what you said toward the end... "People won't remember you for what you say, for what you do. They will remember you for how you made them feel. The hope that you gave them, the inspiration you gave them, the happiness you gave them." So true. Great video pig.
This was on Netflix a really long time ago and as a kid I’ve always loved watching it every single day, wishing to go to that world and to escape this one. Thank you so much Pig for making this video it’s amazing to see this movie get the recognition it deserves.
if you're looking to watch this movie, I think having some context can be really helpful to fully understand the impact of whats happening. I'm by no means an expert on Celtic history, but what I have learned has helped me to understand this movie a lot deeper. This movie takes place as Christianity was being spread into Ireland, and to teach the Celts (who didn't have a written language and certainly couldn't have read English) they used the enlightened texts as almost a picture book version of the Bible to relate to Celtic culture and span the gap. This was during the Middle Ages as well, about 500 AD, so people were really really obsessed with leaving a legacy, having something of them left behind or to persevere after death, hence the obsession with the afterlife and religion. A book, a written history, was one method this was achieved. You basically just wanted someone to remember you existed. So books were really really important, especially an illuminated text like the Book of Kells which had been worked on by countless masters over years and years. There's a lot of really interesting mixing of culture that goes on between Christians and Celts, which eventually evolved into all we have left of Celtic culture. For example, snakes were often equated with dragons, and if you didn't have any antivenom, they were both equally deadly. Saint Patrick, the guy that gets celebrated on St. Patties day, was said to have killed or driven all the dragons (aka snakes) from the Isle, explaining why Ireland is one of the few places on Earth without any snakes. Sorry for rambling, its a bit of a fixation for me. I hope if you're reading this that it helped give you some cool info :3
As someone who's from and lives in kells it's really nice to see more people talk about this movie. A large portion of the walls are still up along with the round tower. The vikings actually got the book but we're only interested in the jewels on the cover, so after the took the jewels they threw it away into a bog. Thankfully the bog was able to preserve it until it was found hundreds of years later. Thanks again for covering this movie :). It's nice to see people cover irish folklore, mythology and history:)
Man I’m Irish and I’ve been waiting for someone to recognise Irish mythology since it doesn’t get much recognition. And the person ended up being one of my favourite UA-camrs
So glad you actually went in on this. I'm part Irish (couldn't tell by the look) and grew up with pagan and druidic beliefs founded from the roots of my Irish heritage. I actually hope to live there one day and loved the chance I got to visit it a few years back. Their mythos is so vast and often overshadowed by Greek, Christian and Norse mythology, so whenever I see someone actually looking into it and able to appreciate it, it warms my heart greatly. Also glad the director showed a black Irish person ( even if a little racist in representation) in the Abbey without him being a 'slave' or servant cause that's what I am descended from. Nice to have that representation finally 🥲 Huge Kudos! Great video my guy ❤
Was the black monk actually Irish though? My reading of him (and the other monks) is that they were from all over the world, like maybe he was an Ethiopian Christian who traveled to Kells to be with like minded people. There was also an Italian, an Englishman, a Chinese(?) monk, and several more, all with stereotypical but fitting designs, especially when you know that this movie's stylistic choices are directly inspired by illuminated manuscripts, what with the textures, flat perspective, and framing of certain shots.
I'm an American and i watched this movie as a kid. As a kid I saw it and knew something was special about it, that being said it also scared the sh*t outta me but even tho it scared me i still wanted to watch it because of my pure fascination. Same thing happened with coraline. Being the person i am today i now have a much deeper and more complex understanding of just how special and creative these movies are. An absolute masterpiece
I feel like you should go over Spirit stallion of the Cimarron. The original is such a gorgeous well made 2d animated movie, it deserves way more attention then it got. Its shows a lot of truer history as well as the strength to never give up on what truly matters! Definitely one of my favorite with wolf walkers and secret of the kels!
This was a beautiful take. I had never even thought of the idea of the illuminators being symbolic of artists and artistry. The Secret of Kells was and still is a huge comfort movie for me and it always gave me a sense of hope and magic that fueled my love of the arts and to distract from how distressing my early life was. As a creative myself and a huge fan of Tom Moore I really appreciate you taking the time to talk about this film, I always thought it deserved more hype. It is truly a masterpiece in every aspect.
I watched this movie back in 2013, I think. I forget how I found out about it, but I was still in high school at the time, and I remember falling in love with it. Not only its art style, which plays with perspective so interestingly, but also the soundtrack. I also found the dialogue to be very memorable because of its interesting cadence. "I've heard about...creatures like you." Was a sentence that played over and over and over in my mind, even years after I first saw it. I listened to the soundtrack almost on repeat. There are some tracks that I like more than others, but even as a whole, it's one of my favourites still. I was so happy when Song of the Sea became a more widespread movie - I had hoped it would spark interest in the other films also made by the studio.
This was probably my favorite BionicPig video yet. The conclusion was beautiful and I think you really did the story justice. I learned things I didn’t know before about this film, and now I’m.
working on a Pangur Bán inspired tattoo based on the image from the manuscript. Pig, thank you so much for your effort in creative endeavors. Man I hate UA-cam sometimes, it won’t let me edit or delete my comment to fix my screw-up
The Book of Kells is one of my favorite movies ever, I have been watching it since I was little and I have taken so much from the movie not only creatively but mentally. This movie is so underrated and I'm ecstatic to see that it finally got the love it deserved. This is an amazing video man, 10/10.
I am so lucky that this movie was such a big part of my childhood, i have such a huge love for it and i'm so glad that someone is finally giving it the credit it deserves
I had this memory of a movie with a girl that had white hair in a dark place and snake eating itself and when I saw these specific scenes in this video everything immediately clicked for me! I watched that movie as a child, around 10 years old when I somewhat understood English and I have been looking for this movie for the past 5 years now, I'm so glad that I found it again through a simple interest post and it's comments :D
As a child, i would watch this movie in amazement without know its true story. I do wish you would've talked about the music in the movie since thats what really brought them emotion onto me, like it was telling me how to feel for the people, so glad you covered one of my most favorite child-hood movies!
this is one of my absolute favorite animated films of all time, up there with the prince of egypt in terms of its animation, storytelling and mythological nature. it scared the HELL out of me as a kid but i've grown to appreciate it so much more over the years and now that i'm an adult i can safely classify it as a downright masterpiece.
Dear BionicPig, I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for your amazing videos. I've been a fan since the early days, and your video on this movie brought back some great memories. I loved the film so much that I named my cat Panger after it. It's not a movie many people in my circle have seen, so I was thrilled to find your beautiful video on it. I've been enjoying all of your videos so far, and I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your work. Keep doing what you do! Thanks again and much love
this movie along with "song of the sea" brings out so much emotion in me. I love them so much, thank you for covering this absolutely stunningly beautiful movie.
The Book of Kells, Song of the Sea, and Wolfwalkers are all such wonderful movies. And I think you should cover them all. But hearing the music you used from Spiritfarer, I think you should cover that as well. I haven’t seen anyone really do so before, and I think you’d do a great job.
I love this movie so much. It's one of those hidden treasures in animation, something so subversive and incredible that it feels like the very treasure it was based on.
This has been one of my favorite movies ever since I watched it as a kid. It’s so beautiful, vibrant and full of life, but so eerie, and sometimes lonely too. I regularly get the Pangur Ban song stuck in my head even though the only lyrics I can remember are Pangur Ban
Contents of the video aside, watch a joy to watch. Thank you, Pig. I know this is an old video so saying this here doesn't mean too much ig lol but everything down to the music choice, to the calm delivery, this already is such a pleasure to watch. I often come back to videos like this over and over when i need to relax. So thank you again. I understand the whole deletion of newish content and really hope you get back into and find joy in this again, because it helps so much.
I just hopped onto the video, but I just had to say. This movie was my childhood. I remember watching this with my sister over and over as young children and I could hardly find it again when I remembered it. Its so good to see it getting talked about!!!
I am not a creative person myself but these words you said in the end really resonated with me "people won't remember you for the things you say and do ,they will remember you for the things you made them feel" i feel as though i may have isolated myself from others while trying to reach my goals and achieve things. also this movie was very beautiful to watch ,the invasion scene is haunting..
I saw the Secret of Kells when I was really young, I think only 5 years old and remember being obsessed with it. Even as a child I could appreciate the beautiful art and incredible storytelling. I remember every time I watched it I felt so invested and amazed, this movie along with The Thief And The Cobbler which I was also obsessed with as a child is one of the main reasons I got into art so early in age. This movie is so special to me.
I'll always sing the praises of this studio. My personal favorite is Song of the Sea, but all the other films are so good that they don't fall far behind at all.
Remember watching it as a kid, losing it from my memory then watching song of the sea which helped me remember the name of this film, finally glad to see it in the spotlight where it should be.
this was one of my all-time favorite movies as a kid. rewatched it recently and caught a bunch of things i didn't get as a kid. btw i love the spiritfarer music
The best thing about Pangur Ban is that it was an informal poem. Eraly Medieval Ireland, as well as the rest of the British Isles, had a strong bardic tradition that obeyed certain rules and structured and was a very prestigious thing (Welsh fili had to study for a decade to master it), and then there was some guy in a small hut-like cell scribbling down a few verses about how his cat and him are kindred spirits "inspired by the old English poem" - THEM'S FIGHTING WORDS
Its blowing me away that you used FF13 music in this video! I've probably never had a bigger smile on my face, jumping up and down on my chair, when I realized what was playing in the background. You are THE coolest!
This movie means so much to me, it’s so nice to see it being talked about after all these years. I remember almost everyday begging my mom to turn on Netflix just so I could watch this movie over and over. It’s also inspired me to start drawing. I just love this movie so much, thanks for covering it you did an amazing job as always :)
I remember watching this as a really young kid, but not remembering what it’s called. I spent years with it in the back of my mind. Every time I asked my friends if they remembered a movie about a white haired girl in the Forrest with creepy, beautiful themes, they told me I probably imagined it. I just recently found this movie again and I feel like I’ve unlocked something deep in my childhood. Creepy.
Not for kids, yes, but I remember watching this when I was a kid. I loved, and still love, this movie. I always remember it at least once a year and it's always such a gem to me
I have a visceral memory of this movie of sitting in a art class in elementary school and seeing the cover of this movie and having a weird, déjà vu existential crisis, even though at the time, I don’t believe I watched it before hand. a couple years later I had almost the same exact feeling but at same time, extremely different when I finally got to watch it. It’s really weird like despite giving me an essential crisis, It’s very comforting.
In my honest opinion the films of cartoon saloon are breathtaking to behold. Every movie explains some type of folklore, mythology, or real life event. With beautiful visuals and great storytelling.
Fuck yeah..so underrated. My dad showed me this a decade ago and a few years later at an after school program, it was either this or some other movie nobody cared about, and me and this guy were the only 2 not only picking a movie to put on, but advocating for this in particular. The class didnt rly enjoy it but it was nice to have on in the back of the computer room
I love this movie. There really is something about the colors and composition of it all that make it absolutely gorgeous. Used to watch it a lot when I was younger because they was something so satisfying about it
Holy shit I’m actually crying, I’m so glad your covering these music I can’t hold i have to go cry. Please cover the rest of these movies, they are so special to me for no particular reason but it was just amazing
I watched this with my brothers when i was younger. I don't think we ever finished it due to the trauma of the crom cave scene, but i remember thoroughly enjoying it up to that point, even as a child.
I saw this incredible film when I was about 7ish and ever since, for the past 12 years, I have thought about it at least once a day, unfortunately at no point did I discover the title of this masterpiece, despite trying to search it up numerous times, at some point I just convinced myself I made the whole thing up, I’m so happy I saw your video!!

Unsure if you know, the creator of this also made Song of the sea, WolfWalkers, and The Breadwinner
All his films are so good
I had this memory of a movie with a girl that had white hair in a dark place and snake eating itself and when I saw these specific scenes in this video everything immediately clicked for me!
Cartoon Saloon is my favorite studio, so thank you so much
this is one of my absolute favorite animated films of all time, up there with the prince of egypt in terms of its animation, storytelling and mythological nature. it scared the HELL out of me as a kid but i've grown to appreciate it so much more over the years and now that i'm an adult i can safely classify it as a downright masterpiece.
Dear BionicPig,
I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for your amazing videos.
As somebody Irish, thus movie means a lot to me. Def my favourite of the Irish animated movies.
Spirit farer alongside outerwilds are some of my favourite games and thier soundtracks both are insane! Heard that shit off rip.
This is why i respect you so much.
This is beautiful
I saw the Secret of Kells when I was really young, I think only 5 years old and remember being obsessed with it. Even as a child I could appreciate the beautiful art and incredible storytelling. I remember every time I watched it I felt so invested and amazed, this movie along with The Thief And The Cobbler which I was also obsessed with as a child is one of the main reasons I got into art so early in age. This movie is so special to me.
I'll always sing the praises of this studio. My personal favorite is Song of the Sea, but all the other films are so good that they don't fall far behind at all.
i grew up on movies like secret of the kells, song of the sea, kubo, etc... and it makes me happy to see you talk about them.
Remember watching it as a kid, losing it from my memory then watching song of the sea which helped me remember the name of this film, finally glad to see it in the spotlight where it should be.
I REMEMBER THIS MOVIE EVERYDAY, i never found it again, but i know i watched it 4 times when i was younger, so thank you for sharing
FINALLY SOMEONE SHOWS OFF HOW AMAZING THIS MOVIE IS
this was one of my all-time favorite movies as a kid. rewatched it recently and caught a bunch of things i didn't get as a kid. btw i love the spiritfarer music
I used to watch this at my grandmas all the time. She’s Irish and was in love with this movie.
Ohhh I can’t wait for you to cover the rest of Cartoon Saloon’s films! They are Brilliantly written and visually stunning!
This studio deserves so much man, watched a lot of their movies and they’ve inspired me so much as an aspiring artist, thank you for reviewing this.
The best thing about Pangur Ban is that it was an informal poem. Eraly Medieval Ireland, as well as the rest of the British Isles, had a strong bardic tradition that obeyed certain rules and structured and was a very prestigious thing (Welsh fili had to study for a decade to master it), and then there was some guy in a small hut-like cell scribbling down a few verses about how his cat and him are kindred spirits
"inspired by the old English poem" - THEM'S FIGHTING WORDS
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Every frame looks beautiful and like a glass stained piece of art.
this film is so beautiful to me... i watched it when i was a kid and it just has this gorgeous, childlike whimsey ahout it. i love ainsling
Its blowing me away that you used FF13 music in this video! I've probably never had a bigger smile on my face, jumping up and down on my chair, when I realized what was playing in the background. You are THE coolest!
i'm loving these weird obscure incredibly creative movies thanks for showing them
I REMEMBER WATCHING THIS AND JUST BEING BEWILDERED AT THE ART AND IMAGRY…. I wish I could watch it again
I saw this movie by chance as a young child and I remember loving it!
I have a yearly watching of this masterpiece. It always seems like I find something new in each viewing.
Creepy.
Just woke up and got the notification for this I’m so glad
This was and still is my favorite childhood movie
A beautiful gem of a movie.
Not for kids, yes, but I remember watching this when I was a kid. I loved, and still love, this movie. I always remember it at least once a year and it's always such a gem to me
I'm so happy you're talking about this masterpiece. No one I mention it to is aware of it.
Literally my childhood movie I haven't seen this in so long, thanks for covering it and giving it the recognition it deserves!!
In my honest opinion the films of cartoon saloon are breathtaking to behold. Every movie explains some type of folklore, mythology, or real life event. With beautiful visuals and great storytelling.
Love the positivity here. It's genuine, not forced ❤!
It's nice to see that even after 14 years people still talk about this film
Fuck yeah..so underrated. My dad showed me this a decade ago and a few years later at an after school program, it was either this or some other movie nobody cared about, and me and this guy were the only 2 not only picking a movie to put on, but advocating for this in particular. The class didnt rly enjoy it but it was nice to have on in the back of the computer room
Stoked to see people talking about this movie and the studio behind it
I nearly forgot this movie existed and I'm so happy that you are covering this movie. Because now I really want to rewatch it.
I love this movie. There really is something about the colors and composition of it all that make it absolutely gorgeous. Used to watch it a lot when I was younger because they was something so satisfying about it
I always tear up at the ending. It really is an amazing movie that deserves all the praise.
Holy shit I’m actually crying, I’m so glad your covering these music I can’t hold i have to go cry. Please cover the rest of these movies, they are so special to me for no particular reason but it was just amazing
I use to watch this video almost every day on dvd when i was younger
The fact that he put Stella's Departure as a background music is honestly hartbreaking...
I watched this with my brothers when i was younger. I don't think we ever finished it due to the trauma of the crom cave scene, but i remember thoroughly enjoying it up to that point, even as a child.
I saw this incredible film when I was about 7ish and ever since, for the past 12 years, I have thought about it at least once a day, unfortunately at no point did I discover the title of this masterpiece, despite trying to search it up numerous times, at some point I just convinced myself I made the whole thing up, I’m so happy I saw your video!!
i looove cartoon salloons lineup of movies! genuinely such a great and underrated studio!
