@@bladekick6405 same with WolfWalkers i love it sm
Fu
Now Pig has to cover the rest of Tomm Moore’s Irish Folklore trilogy. The Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers are both incredible movies in their own rights.
And the breadwinners too
@@dulcemaria-cw5dmCartoon Saloon is an insanely talented studio
Indeed, they are all such Beautiful
Movies, I'm actually from Ireland
{Don't like the Country...}
But anyway, those are such
Great movies~ :)
I saw them all and each one it's just scapism heaven❤
YEEEEEESS!!!!! Wolfwalkers was absolutely amazing!
As an Irish person, I really appreciate you bringing this film to a larger audience. Honeslty needs more recognition. Irish animation and art in general is on another level, I feel like alot of our culture appreciate art and it shows through our media.
I watched it when I was little and loved it. I forgot the name, and so I spent 10+ years trying to remember the name of the movie (I didn't think about asking anyone about it).
Hey my friend! Good to know I'm not the only one from here. I'm very glad our ancestors and our stories are being recognized
I’m no Irish, but I watched it as a kid and it gave me a terrifying dream… I’m still scared of this movie to this day from the dream.
I feel like growing up in Ireland you can either be interested in this or gaa and that’s it
Agreed
Yes, as a child growing up in Ireland, this was one of my favourite childhood films! Please cover Song of the Sea if you haven't already.
YES SONG OF THE SEA!! I'm far from Irish but I saw both of these movies, I don't know where my dad got them from
Bruh this is like the 100th time I ran into you Trina q
And Wolf Walkers. Haven’t seen it because I can’t find it but the song Running with The Wolves 😙👌🏼 good song to listen to walking in the woods
I’m American but Song of the Sea is one of my favorite childhood films of all time. I’ll subscribe in hopes that the creator decides to cover that magical movie
Cartoon Saloon is honestly such an amazing animation company that I wished had more recognition, they written and animated WolfWalkers, Song Of The Sea, and animated The BreadWinner all of these movies in my opinion are gut wrenching and just pure art
Im not Irish - Im Welsh - but any Celtic acknowledgement makes me so happy! I love Celtic myths and stories, glad you've brought this great film and source to so many peoples attention!
I genuinely thought people outside of Ireland didn't know this movie existed. So happy to see you check it out!
I'm from Southeast Asia and I've been a fan of Cartoon Saloon ever since I saw this film in 2009 🥺 Their films really deserve more recognition
Here from Spain, we love Cartoon Saloon in my family at least. The Secret of Kells deserves ALL the praise it gets and more.
I live in America and it was one of my childhood movies, I’m so glad that he covered it it’s really nostalgic for me
I was born in russia and grew up in america and this was one of my favorite movies as a kid, I absolutely loved it and it made me love irish culture as well
I was getting ready to watch this movie today!!! This is my twin sister and I's childhood movie.
A lot of our relatives and ancestors are Irish, Scottish and Swedish. I wanted to dress like Aisling for Halloween when I was 9 yrs old.
I'm 22 and now I might dress like her this upcoming Halloween. This movie is so good and makes me cry every time 😢😭❤
As an Irish person who's been a fan of yours for a few years now, I really wasn't expecting this appreciation towards our art, culture and mythology 😭 thank you
As a creative person with a massive art block that has lasted for over a year I found myself crying with your words at the end of the video. Thank you so much for this one! I hope you can review Wolfwalkers and Song of the Sea by the same creators.
Tomms a god damn national treasure, it's good to see his work get recognised. Shit, even here in Ireland he and his team don't get the notice they deserve so it's nice to see some appreciation for the best art to come out of here in recent memory.
Love that you went in on the mythology too!
6:27 Bionic's "wow" reaction is gold, this movie is well done
Tom moore’s movies always hit so hard. I cry for all of them. Just so much meaningfulness and artistic joy.
I didn’t expect to cry so much at 20:10 I had lost my passion for art for a year now, and I feel like I’m drowning everyday. It’s such an isolating and disheartening place to be, especially since I’ve always used art to express myself even as a child. I’ve limited myself to rules and this idea of “perfection” that I had lost why I loved art. Thank you so much. I’ve been searching for the fire for a year and I finally found the spark I needed. ❤
If the scene with Brendan showing his uncle the book doesn't move you to tears I don't know what will.
I watched this as a kid, and it sat on the back of my head for years. I forgot the plot or how it looked like, but I couldn't forget that it scared me and made me sad, that I didn't wanna go back to it again. A month or so ago, I watched it with my friend then realized its fantastical aesthetic has affected a good chunk of my life. I'm so glad I went back and remembered that awe I felt back then
I absolutely love the creativity of these movies especially Wolfwalkers (hope you check that one out as well)
As someone who's from and lives in kells it's really nice to see more people talk about this movie. A large portion of the walls are still up along with the round tower. The vikings actually got the book but we're only interested in the jewels on the cover, so after the took the jewels they threw it away into a bog. Thankfully the bog was able to preserve it until it was found hundreds of years later. Thanks again for covering this movie :). It's nice to see people cover irish folklore, mythology and history:)
THIS VIDEO CAME OUT AT A PERFECT TIME FOR ME OH MY GOD!
I have been looking more into my Irish heritage to feel more connected to my roots and for years This movie has always made me feel so connected to it even if it was only just now with this video had pointed out the more cultural parts that I never knew as a kid.
Amazing video and I am so glad more people will know about this beautiful film.
So glad you actually went in on this. I'm part Irish (couldn't tell by the look) and grew up with pagan and druidic beliefs founded from the roots of my Irish heritage. I actually hope to live there one day and loved the chance I got to visit it a few years back. Their mythos is so vast and often overshadowed by Greek, Christian and Norse mythology, so whenever I see someone actually looking into it and able to appreciate it, it warms my heart greatly. Also glad the director showed a black Irish person ( even if a little racist in representation) in the Abbey without him being a 'slave' or servant cause that's what I am descended from. Nice to have that representation finally 🥲 Huge Kudos! Great video my guy ❤
Was the black monk actually Irish though? My reading of him (and the other monks) is that they were from all over the world, like maybe he was an Ethiopian Christian who traveled to Kells to be with like minded people. There was also an Italian, an Englishman, a Chinese(?) monk, and several more, all with stereotypical but fitting designs, especially when you know that this movie's stylistic choices are directly inspired by illuminated manuscripts, what with the textures, flat perspective, and framing of certain shots.
I feel like you should go over Spirit stallion of the Cimarron. The original is such a gorgeous well made 2d animated movie, it deserves way more attention then it got. Its shows a lot of truer history as well as the strength to never give up on what truly matters! Definitely one of my favorite with wolf walkers and secret of the kels!
I really like your recent post exploring little-known movies. Helps gives attention to them!
This was on Netflix a really long time ago and as a kid I’ve always loved watching it every single day, wishing to go to that world and to escape this one. Thank you so much Pig for making this video it’s amazing to see this movie get the recognition it deserves.
The best thing about Pangur Ban is that it was an informal poem. Eraly Medieval Ireland, as well as the rest of the British Isles, had a strong bardic tradition that obeyed certain rules and structured and was a very prestigious thing (Welsh fili had to study for a decade to master it), and then there was some guy in a small hut-like cell scribbling down a few verses about how his cat and him are kindred spirits
"inspired by the old English poem" - THEM'S FIGHTING WORDS
Irish culture is so interesting and beautiful. I really love the message behind this film and I love what you said toward the end... "People won't remember you for what you say, for what you do. They will remember you for how you made them feel. The hope that you gave them, the inspiration you gave them, the happiness you gave them." So true. Great video pig.
Man I’m Irish and I’ve been waiting for someone to recognise Irish mythology since it doesn’t get much recognition. And the person ended up being one of my favourite UA-camrs
My favorite line and response to the line. in the whole movie.
Line: "You are the Abbott of Kells. You must get up."
Response: Cellach's face is absolutely priceless. 😂
“Not for kids”
Man, my mom showed me this when I was 3 and I begged her to watch it sometimes
I once watched this When i was a kid, before this video the only thing i remembered from the movie was:
1 the illuminators wispering to eachover
2 aisling’s “death”
3 the god eating itself
I watched this with my brothers when i was younger. I don't think we ever finished it due to the trauma of the crom cave scene, but i remember thoroughly enjoying it up to that point, even as a child.
The Book of Kells, Song of the Sea, and Wolfwalkers are all such wonderful movies. And I think you should cover them all. But hearing the music you used from Spiritfarer, I think you should cover that as well. I haven’t seen anyone really do so before, and I think you’d do a great job.
I saw this when I was little, being terrified, and never being able to find it again. It really feels like it slapped me emotionally and just dipped
I’m so glad you covered this. Not enough people know about this movie.
if you're looking to watch this movie, I think having some context can be really helpful to fully understand the impact of whats happening. I'm by no means an expert on Celtic history, but what I have learned has helped me to understand this movie a lot deeper.
This movie takes place as Christianity was being spread into Ireland, and to teach the Celts (who didn't have a written language and certainly couldn't have read English) they used the enlightened texts as almost a picture book version of the Bible to relate to Celtic culture and span the gap. This was during the Middle Ages as well, about 500 AD, so people were really really obsessed with leaving a legacy, having something of them left behind or to persevere after death, hence the obsession with the afterlife and religion. A book, a written history, was one method this was achieved. You basically just wanted someone to remember you existed. So books were really really important, especially an illuminated text like the Book of Kells which had been worked on by countless masters over years and years.
There's a lot of really interesting mixing of culture that goes on between Christians and Celts, which eventually evolved into all we have left of Celtic culture. For example, snakes were often equated with dragons, and if you didn't have any antivenom, they were both equally deadly. Saint Patrick, the guy that gets celebrated on St. Patties day, was said to have killed or driven all the dragons (aka snakes) from the Isle, explaining why Ireland is one of the few places on Earth without any snakes.
Sorry for rambling, its a bit of a fixation for me. I hope if you're reading this that it helped give you some cool info :3
As somebody Irish, thus movie means a lot to me. Def my favourite of the Irish animated movies.
This was probably my favorite BionicPig video yet. The conclusion was beautiful and I think you really did the story justice. I learned things I didn’t know before about this film, and now I’m.
working on a Pangur Bán inspired tattoo based on the image from the manuscript. Pig, thank you so much for your effort in creative endeavors.
Man I hate UA-cam sometimes, it won’t let me edit or delete my comment to fix my screw-up
YES!! I'm so glad people are starting to recognize this super underrated film.
One of my favorite movies of all time
I'm an American and i watched this movie as a kid. As a kid I saw it and knew something was special about it, that being said it also scared the sh*t outta me but even tho it scared me i still wanted to watch it because of my pure fascination. Same thing happened with coraline. Being the person i am today i now have a much deeper and more complex understanding of just how special and creative these movies are. An absolute masterpiece
I REMEMBER THIS MOVIE EVERYDAY, i never found it again, but i know i watched it 4 times when i was younger, so thank you for sharing
I love this movie so much. It's one of those hidden treasures in animation, something so subversive and incredible that it feels like the very treasure it was based on.
Cartoon Saloon is my favorite studio, so thank you so much
I remember watching this as a really young kid, but not remembering what it’s called. I spent years with it in the back of my mind. Every time I asked my friends if they remembered a movie about a white haired girl in the Forrest with creepy, beautiful themes, they told me I probably imagined it. I just recently found this movie again and I feel like I’ve unlocked something deep in my childhood. Creepy.
One of the greatest animated movies of all time and it’s not overly voilent
Fuck yeah..so underrated. My dad showed me this a decade ago and a few years later at an after school program, it was either this or some other movie nobody cared about, and me and this guy were the only 2 not only picking a movie to put on, but advocating for this in particular. The class didnt rly enjoy it but it was nice to have on in the back of the computer room
this is one of my absolute favorite animated films of all time, up there with the prince of egypt in terms of its animation, storytelling and mythological nature. it scared the HELL out of me as a kid but i've grown to appreciate it so much more over the years and now that i'm an adult i can safely classify it as a downright masterpiece.
Had to hop on this before youtube does what UA-cam does💀
I am so lucky that this movie was such a big part of my childhood, i have such a huge love for it and i'm so glad that someone is finally giving it the credit it deserves
The Book of Kells is one of my favorite movies ever, I have been watching it since I was little and I have taken so much from the movie not only creatively but mentally. This movie is so underrated and I'm ecstatic to see that it finally got the love it deserved. This is an amazing video man, 10/10.
I had this memory of a movie with a girl that had white hair in a dark place and snake eating itself and when I saw these specific scenes in this video everything immediately clicked for me! I watched that movie as a child, around 10 years old when I somewhat understood English and I have been looking for this movie for the past 5 years now, I'm so glad that I found it again through a simple interest post and it's comments :D
I watched this when I was 3 I thought I dreamt this. I loved the style
This was and still is my favorite childhood movie
FINALLY SOMEONE SHOWS OFF HOW AMAZING THIS MOVIE IS
I REMEMBER WATCHING THIS AND JUST BEING BEWILDERED AT THE ART AND IMAGRY…. I wish I could watch it again
As a child, i would watch this movie in amazement without know its true story. I do wish you would've talked about the music in the movie since thats what really brought them emotion onto me, like it was telling me how to feel for the people, so glad you covered one of my most favorite child-hood movies!
I got to see the actual Book of Kells on display when I visited Dublin. It's a truly amazing piece of work.
Not for kids, yes, but I remember watching this when I was a kid. I loved, and still love, this movie. I always remember it at least once a year and it's always such a gem to me
Always love these nostalgic childhood films
Dear BionicPig,
I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for your amazing videos. I've been a fan since the early days, and your video on this movie brought back some great memories. I loved the film so much that I named my cat Panger after it. It's not a movie many people in my circle have seen, so I was thrilled to find your beautiful video on it.
I've been enjoying all of your videos so far, and I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your work. Keep doing what you do!
Thanks again and much love
I went through a journey to discover the art I never got to see as a child. This is high on the list.
I ADORE the metaphor about how being an illuminator (artist/writer) is how one turns darkness into light.
My favorite quote ever (which I actually want to get tattooed) is from the Tale of Desperaux and it is “Stories are light. Light it precious in a world so dark. So tell a story and make some light”. I would probably just shorten the quote to “stories are light” or “tell a story, make some light” for the tattoo.
But yeah, this is literally my entire philosophy about art and writing and really just creativity in general. It is our greatest source of light in the dark. I’m an agnostic personally, but I do also believe that if you really think about it, pretty much all of religion, mythology, folklore, and human culture in general is just based on art and stories passed down from generation to generation. They are what connect us, inspire us, fuel us forward in our pursuits, and give us hope in dark times. Even if you are just someone who used fantasy to escape from reality for a while, I don’t think that’s a bad thing and it can be the comfort someone truly needs to get through life. I know this has always been the case for myself. I literally need it and I can’t think of any period of my life in which I didn’t use my imagination as a coping mechanism, even in adulthood.
It’s a truly beautiful and powerful thing.
And also why I’m so avidly against AI art and writing. It defeats the entire purpose. Creativity is quintessentially human. It is the basis of our entire way of life. To take away the humanity from art and writing is to create something completely meaningless. You only add to the void.
this was one of my all-time favorite movies as a kid. rewatched it recently and caught a bunch of things i didn't get as a kid. btw i love the spiritfarer music
I'll always sing the praises of this studio. My personal favorite is Song of the Sea, but all the other films are so good that they don't fall far behind at all.
Ohhh I can’t wait for you to cover the rest of Cartoon Saloon’s films! They are Brilliantly written and visually stunning!
when i was younger i was obsessed with aisling’s design so i would draw her everyday lol
I remember when I went to visit my cousins in ireland for christmas, I was currently 8 and my cousin showed me this movie. I wish and really do I watched it properly. If I did it might of really struck down to the heart for me, I'm so upset I didn't take it in.
Ahh, this looks beautiful already
I saw this movie by chance as a young child and I remember loving it!
keep up the good work, bp. youre an absolute joy to see on the feed and your videos are so well crafted i cant help but love them
I saw the Secret of Kells when I was really young, I think only 5 years old and remember being obsessed with it. Even as a child I could appreciate the beautiful art and incredible storytelling. I remember every time I watched it I felt so invested and amazed, this movie along with The Thief And The Cobbler which I was also obsessed with as a child is one of the main reasons I got into art so early in age. This movie is so special to me.
The fact that he put Stella's Departure as a background music is honestly hartbreaking...
I watched this movie some years ago in one of our local children's channel. I remembered the plot (vaguely), but I had totally forgotten how beautiful it looks!! The animation, the colors, the shapes, everything is so pretty 🤩 glad you made a video of it, it's a fantastic movie and I'm sure it'll get more recognition thanks to this video 🙏
Finally!! Someone notices this masterpiece of a movie.
Oh my gosh I’ve have spent years trying to find this movie ever since I watched it with my mother when I was younger ❤❤❤❤ legit crying right now
I just hopped onto the video, but I just had to say. This movie was my childhood. I remember watching this with my sister over and over as young children and I could hardly find it again when I remembered it. Its so good to see it getting talked about!!!
As the video started I’m like, wow the music from this movie really sounds like it’s from spiritfarer, turns out it is
I loved this film growing up, the style was always so intriguing to me and learning about where the art style came from was super fun! Cartoon Saloon films always have such gorgeous looking style and animation and it was great to see you cover this one! Great vid as always, Pig!
YES! You finally saw it! ❤ I LOVE this studio so much. I can't wait for their next movie!
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO MAKE A VIDOE ON THIS MOVIE OMG ITS MY FAVORITE MOVUE OF ALL TIME
1:12 THEIF AND THE COBBLER IS AMAZING AND ALSO ALL THE MOVIE'S WOLF WALKERS AND SONG OF THE SEA and the book of kells 😭
I've never been able to see this unfortunately but I used to see adds for it when I was little. Very nostalgic for me.
This has been one of my favorite movies ever since I watched it as a kid. It’s so beautiful, vibrant and full of life, but so eerie, and sometimes lonely too. I regularly get the Pangur Ban song stuck in my head even though the only lyrics I can remember are Pangur Ban
What a sweet ending for this video, loved it! I hope you will review the next two film that they made. Both made me cry and I’m 100% sure that you will love them
Literally my childhood movie I haven't seen this in so long, thanks for covering it and giving it the recognition it deserves!!
I loved this movie growing up. The details and artistry were something that always fascinated me, and carried through with me to adulthood. Thank you for talking about it !
i grew up on movies like secret of the kells, song of the sea, kubo, etc... and it makes me happy to see you talk about them.
I nearly forgot this movie existed and I'm so happy that you are covering this movie. Because now I really want to rewatch it.
The art style is gorgeous
I used to watch this movie all the time with my family; to this day, it still holds a special place in my heart.
Just woke up and got the notification for this I’m so glad
Pig's reaction at 6:29 had me dying 🤣🤣
I'm so glad to see someone talking about this movie!! It's been one of my favorites for years. If someone says animation isn't art just show them this movie.
I always tear up at the ending. It really is an amazing movie that deserves all the praise.
This is why i respect you so much.
This is beautiful
As someone who isn't irish, its cool that your talking about folklore and this film. Really cool. Scotland next?
I love this film! I bought it on Amazon and just recently showed it to my boyfriend. I'm so happy to see you cover this! 😊
this film is so beautiful to me... i watched it when i was a kid and it just has this gorgeous, childlike whimsey ahout it. i love ainsling
This studio deserves so much man, watched a lot of their movies and they’ve inspired me so much as an aspiring artist, thank you for reviewing this.
This was absolutely amazing Pig, very emotional and inspiring video. Always love when you post!!
I have a yearly watching of this masterpiece. It always seems like I find something new in each viewing.
