Is AI going to destroy animation? Many people have expressed concerns about the use of AI programs such as Chat GPT and Midjourney. Many believe it will lead to the displacement of artists and the theft of original artworks. But, is AI technology really here to make traditional art obsolete? In this video, writer-director Tomm Moore, co-founder of Cartoon Saloon, shares his views on this topic. Join us as we discover how, despite the challenges, there may be a glimmer of hope for artisanal animation.

Tomm has a point whether we are going to see less commercial value if the technology improves. That's not a question that can be summarised on a Macro scale.
But I like to give a few stances:
    1. Art jobs has always been in the very beginning a niche status type job.
So artists should only focus on opportunities within these niche groups. The large market should be of no concern.
These opportunities won't go away because of the art culture that surrounds it. The Visuals aren't enough and there will always be those who care.
    2. Since these art generators depend on the millions and billions of quality of images that has been stolen from, making it more ethical by removing
these images while enforcing an opt in system will make AI technology seem less amazing. If you understand how it works, it becomes less scary.
    3. The question of the value of process and the value of aesthetics is not a new topic. It has been discussed when philosophy was early in it's age.
So don't worry to much about the existential question and just do what you believe in!
    4. AI will have it's own limits. It being able to perfectly replicate what you are thinking is pretty much impossible. Especially when you understand
how it works. It requires a sizeable training data.

He's also a vegan. you have no right to have anything to do with him, nor does he have any right to be an animator.

I think incorporating AI into workflows is what the future is going to be, but I definitely want legal regulations surrounding AI stuff. I want the ability to filter out AI stuff because I don't like work that was made without effort. Legally requiring social media sites to have filters that label AI work and allowing people to choose not to see it, as well as protections for artists who don't want their work scraped and remuneration to artists affected by stolen training data is a step in the right direction.

Is the rise of AI in animation a threat to authenticity, or a tool to democratize storytelling possibilities?
    🤔

I agree and disagree with your guest. I think there will always be a segment of the population that will avoid AI-created art like the plague -- BUT, that WON'T include the movie-going public. If the movie's look and story are amazing -- 99% of the public will go and see it. Animation, writing, etc., will be affected BIG time, sadly. But original paintings, artwork -- there will always be a market for hand-done/human-created work, and maybe that will even grow?

I like this take a lot! This is how I feel. I have a lot of stories Id make an animation of and I believe it will be a lot easier to do as someone that isnt rich and doesnt want to get locked into a professional (animation) industry where its almost impossible to make money on independent projects.
I use AI and ive tested a lot of them out, which is something I keep secret from a lot of ppl on my art account bc of how hated it is. I dont posts AI content on there, but I also avoid the topic altogether on that account because of my take.
I personally enjoy really overblown detailed 2d animation and I think Ai has the potential to correct frames, make inbetween frames, and change textures as the animation flows to make it feel more alive. Doing smaller more tedious things that the viewer doesnt really think about.
I also like the ability for Ai to give example ideas for composition and reference art, similar to how most people use pinterest anyways.
Technology always does this. Animations used to be made image rolls. Modern tech makes things easier. But even with easier animation methods, that didnt stop time consuming claymotion from existing.
Yall put this in a cohesive way and its undeniable how much this has the potential to help indie studios, especially video game developers who want to make npcs in the background feel unique.
Good video, and for once an outlook that isnt trying to fear monger artists away from their passions

Thank you for sharing about your experience. It's definitely a controversial topic, but there is no doubt that it's going to be integrated in film production, animated or not. Hopefully as artists, we can raise our voice and guide the adoption toward an ethical use.

i dont know. The canvas being replaced by a screen and the paintbrush by a stylus is advancement - as a tool that an artist uses. Ai does replace the artist - not the brush, paint or canvas. It is just different. And its rightly hated.

Are Airplanes an Outstanding way of Transportation or Dangerous weapons of Mass Destruction?
My whole point is that it ultimately depends how the AI is used. I think, if it is used for the Hard repetitive aspects Labor of Animation (Like drawing Shapes slightly different over and over again) I think AI would help with that,
But as for the Creativity aspect of the Story and Characters? Definitely Not.
AI will never have the following:
    1. Empathy
    2. Common Sense
    3. Morality
    4. Experience
    5. Imagination
    6. Emotions
    7. Consciousness
    8. Free Will

One thing is certain at this point: AI is here to stay, whether we like it or not. The main problem I see is copyright infringement, and the current law is not prepared for it.

yeah AI makes everthing dead. you can create any story, any genre, like any writer, no writer block, you dont even need an idea.
