Great video. I've been using this same method for years. It's especially helpful if you also want to preserve the emblems (they can be expensive to replace or impossible to find). One difference: I use the eraser on a random orbital. It works great and doesn't leave as many swirl marks. It also takes decals off with almost no effort.

Great video and spot on. I have done this many times over the years and rather than using the power tool eraser on the residual glue… I apply a liberal amount of “ Glue Begone”…. let it sit for about 5 minutes and wipe the residue off. It does not harm the paint at all and after washing/drying the area, I apply a wax and good to go. My two cents.

There is another way to remove the glue residue that works for me. Warm up the glue with heat gun then use some real sticky tape like Gorilla tape and apply it over the glue then pull off the tape. The residue will separate into the tape and with a few reapplications works quite well.

This is a pretty good vehicle. I like the way this guy appears to genuinely care about his quality of work and taking care of the paint. My only problem with this video is that he could've mentioned how some Goo Gone would've probably been a less invasive approach that would've worked too.

googone generally isn’t good for this type of adhesive. It just makes it messy and spreads the adhesive to places you don’t want it to be and makes cleanup really difficult

Just wanted to say I removed my EcoBoost badge a couple days ago, and Goo gone was pretty much useless for this application. I tried it and since I didn't have any research wheel, I pretty much just use the thumb method. Which really sucks!

One important thing (other than not using knives) is to make sure when using the heat gun, don't hold it over the paint too long. I think when I was removing the small emblem the dealer put on my car, I only held the heat gun there for about 2 seconds, then pulled, and repeated a few times. And I think for most, you only need a heat gun that gets up to 300-400 degrees for removing emblems. Decals may need higher heat.
In my case I didn't even have to use dental floss but rather tweezers gripping the emblem from both sides was enough to wiggle it off (didn't even touch the paint). Of course larger emblems may benefit from dental floss if you can't grip them with something.

I bought a 2002 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab Sport, all black, new from the dealer in December 2001. First thing when I got it home I removed all of the vinyl badges from the sides and tailgate. With a hair dryer it took me less than 30 minutes. Likely this easy because they were on the truck only a few weeks. Once they get baked on by the sun it's quite a bit more work, and more likely to show as the surrounding finish would have faded some. By the way, I still have with only 62k on it. Turned out to have been a good buy.

STORY TIME: So, I was all set to go buy some fishing line, a heat gun, and an adhesive eraser wheel, but when I pulled up to Home Depot I realized I’d left my card at home. I was gonna go back but when I got home I decided to wash the car b/c we just had our last rain for a few days. When I was drying it I decided to try to just pull the letters off b/c it’s 75° and humid outside. The first letter came off fine, but I didn’t want to keep using my fingers, so I decided to give this thin paracord I used for making a bracelet. It worked like a charm on the “Altima” letters, “Nissan” decal, and the “SL” letters so easily. B/c I didn’t heat anything up I was able to peel most of the adhesive off with my fingers. For the left over I grabbed a microfiber towel and poured a quarter-size amount of extra virgin olive oil on it. Yes, olive oil 😂 I rubbed off all of the sticky part left over and most of the dirty and grime from being the letters and decal came off quite easily. I took another microfiber towel and dropped a quarter-size amount of Dawn dish detergent on it (b/c that duck commercial compelled me) and made little circles until it was completely clean. I rinsed it w/ some water, gave the trunk another wash and dry, and done! No heat, no tools, no harsh chemicals, no damage, and no dollars spent! BOOM!

I heated it up for 2 min like U described; used dental floss (which broke) so I grabbed a 4 inch long piece of weedeater string. I held the hair dryer w/ my chin while moving the weedeater string along; boom OFF! Remained: some BLACK./ TAR like sticky substance. To remove: I used spray wax, and microfiber towel; still some did not come off; so I used a tiny bead of rubbing compound. Boom off.. Then I waxed the small area w/ ceramic spray wax. PERFECT. that was only being on there for 4 days!!! I couldn't imagine a long term grip! esp with the Texas heat. Luckly I removed it w/ in a few days of ownership! ZERO damage... thanks for the tip. Here is Australia the use of the heat gun / hair dryer is optional if you do it in summer. Just leave the car out in the sun for about 20 mins and the bodywork will be hot enough to use the dental floss method. Once the metal bits have been removed, a bit of 100% Isopropyl alcohol on a rag will remove the adhesive residue. Alternatively, a dab of eucalyptus oil works a treat with stubborn residure but test it on a concealed area first. Then wash the remover away with water asap. And clean and polish area according to need after that.

I have a new C8 Corvette and want to remove the rear "CORVETTE" badging. The badging is attached to the paint in some places but attached over the center stripes in others. Do you think the stripes will withstand the eraser or any other type of adhesive removal technique? I am concerned I will damage the stripes that were factory applied.

From my days working at a dealership store, Badges are glued on these days. Use a "Hair dryer" to heat the glue and they peel off.

Believe it or not Peanut Butter is the best adhesive remover there is, and it will not damage your paint.

Can you do this on an old classic horn button? I want to get it rechromed but the plastic button wouldn’t hold up in process. I’d like to remove without destroying.

What about decals? Dealer decals? I forgot to remove before it got cold down in TX. Should I wait until February/March when it warms up again or try to have a local body shop handle it?

The safest way is to let it sit facing the hot sun, preferably in the summertime. To heat up the emblem and adhesive. A heat gun will burn the paint.

Another way to get rid of the adhesive is Tea Tree Oil or Eucalyptus Oil. Apply it to a clean microfibre cloth and wipe the adhesive off, it’s also effective for getting road tar off and excellent for cleaning headlights

Great explanation! I want to remove the badges, paint them black, and then reapply them to my 2008 Toyota 4Runner. What's the best double-sided tape or adhesive to use so the emblems don't fall off? Thanks!!!

Hi sinclair, I did not see my question down below. I am just painting my badges and putting a 2 part clear coat on them. Do I have to take the adhesive off if I am using new 3m tape and putting badges back? Nice video. Thanks in advance! 😀👍

I have the X5M competition and want to remove all model/name badges from both interior and exterior. How do you do about removing the X5M Competition badge from a carbon interior center console - without losing the finish on the carbon trim that lies underneath? I would like to remove the badge and keep the nice, consistent finish of that glossy carbon trim.
    Thanks,
    J.

What if it's on a fiberglass front bumper, and not on metal? I just got a used 2007 Pontiac G6 hard-top convertible that's in like new condition, and although the silver background part of the emblem on the front bumper/grille is still there, the red sort of "filling" in the center of the Pontiac emblem is missing. I have a new emblem ready to be placed, but I need to get what remains of the old emblem off and I'm afraid of melting the fiberglass (or plastic) whatever the material is for a non-metal front bumper if I heat it up. I also don't want to scratch or damage the paint. I really, really like this car, it's only got 28,000 miles on it and it's like new, except for this annoying missing center part of the Pontiac emblem on the front. Could I use the same technique as here on a fiberglass/plastic bumper, or would that potentially ruin the front bumper and/or the paint on the front bumper? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I put four strands of floss together and it worked perfectly for the Chevy tailgate logo.
