The mainstream bodybuilding industry swept the controversy of both the 1980 Mr. Olympia and the 1981 Mr. Olympia competitions under the rug in order to minimize the damage done to the sport and to keep the money rolling in to benefit the corporations that controlled bodybuilding. The truth is that after decades of slow but steady growth, the results of these two contests knocked bodybuilding back on its heels, causing Mr. Olympia competitor Dennis Tinerino to lament that, "the Mr. Olympia doesn't mean anything anymore." This is the story of the aftermath of the 1980 Mr. Olympia, which resulted in Mike Mentzer leaving the sport forever.

Mike Mentzer was an intelligent body builder with amazing physique and had matchingly impressive integrity. Mike is a great person to look up to for anyone aspiring to improve themselves, and thanks to the work of John Little and Mike’s own positive reputation his legacy has grown evermore popular. I wish he was still around, but in his limited time he has made a lasting impact.

We all know he should have been Mr Olympia in both 1979 and 1980.
If you could have a man be Mr Olypmia in the state of Arnold 80, Franco 81 and Chris Dickerson 82. He easily should have been a two time Mr Olympia. The only man in history to get a perfect score of 300 TWICE.

Its very easy to beat Mentzer and the rest when you have the promoter and almost all the judges in your pocket, hence why Bill Pearl stepped down as head judge for that contest as he was heard saying "I don't want anything do with this fiasco" If you just do some journalistic digging you'll eventually find out the real reason why Arnold in 8 weeks decided to suddenly train and enter that show. Here's a great article to read
      starkcenter.org/igh/igh-v11/igh-v11-n1/igh1101p04.pdf

The 1980 Arnold was no where close to the Arnold who was Olympia in 1975 ... Arnold had a 2 month window training for the 1980 .. that is nowhere close to how he develops compared to a 5 to 6 months preparation. So no way should have he even been in the top 3 but no way should he had won 1980 Mr.Olympia.At best Arnold was 80% of his former self..even he admitted it.

Pro Bodybuilding had been growing in popularity in the mainstream for years prior to the 1980/1981 Olympias. Bodybuilders were appearing on popular TV shows (Hulk) and films (Arnold), bodybuilding mag circulations were rising, bodybuilders were competing in mainstream TV show competitions (World's Strongest Man, etc). Bodybuilding was going mainstream, and it was great. After the 1980/81 Olympias, Pro Bodybuilding lost all credibility, TV dropped their competitions like a hot potato, and the sport has never been more than a fringe sport in terms of broadcasting since. Damn shame....and Arnold (and the Weiders and his cronies) were at the center of it, and the cause of it.

I vaguely remember seeing Arnold on a talk show as a kid after the 1980 Mr. Olympia and it was clear that he knew he was not top dog. He said it was because he wasn’t up to speed on the posing and the use of music in presentations. And it was also clear that Arnold only went in the contest because he was using the Olympia as a promotional vehicle because he was in Conan the Barbarian and he was tying the contest to the film.

I make sure to bring up that Arnold bought the 80/81 Olympias whenever I can ... even to the point of it not being relevant to the conversation (ha).
    .
Evidence of toxic narcissism exists - and, it sure as hell exists with 'Ah-nald'.. here is an example:
[1] After the 80' Olympia Tom Platz went and swore his allegiance to Arnold - Tom's own words from his audiobook.
[2] In 81 Tom was in fantastic shape - what was he going to 'do' (about Franco 'winning') after he'd backed Arnold?
[3] In 82 Tom was once again in fantastic shape - but, he'd torn his bicep.
The only person he told about his injury was Arnold. Arnold then proceeded to tell the judges.
So, the judges demanded Tom do poses that accentuated his injury.

@@darrenburke9630 Joe weider had his self proclaimed "weider principles" that he himself had designed so he stated to help bodybuilders with their training in order to make better progress in the gym and become better. In his magazines during the 80's when bodybuilders were interviewed a common question asked was what weider principles do you use in the gym. The fact is joe weider had stole all these principles from Vince Gironda a retired competing bodybuilder but was still training many clients at his gym in Hollywood. Vince was very well known for his knowledge of how to train and to take a physique and see what needed to be done. The hollywood movie industry would send Vince actors all the time that needed to get in shape for a movie or a television role ie sylvester stallone, clint eastwood, cher and many others, also many top bodybuilders trained at Vinces Gym as it was called, Larry Scott the first mr olympia, Mohamed Makkawy.(type at youtube mohamed makkawy posing routine 1984 mr olympia)
Anyway Vince had stated that when he put his clients on certain programs joe weider would scoff at his routines but soon joe realized these programs were actually working and working rather well. So joe stole them and proclaimed them as his own. Vince some years later had said "it's funny joe weider has enough money to buy and sell me a thousands times over and yet he's terrified of me and avoids me at all cost, he stole my training principles and ideas and yet he still gets them wrong".
Vince was very well known for not taking any shit from anyone infact in the original rocky movies Sylvestor Stallone based his boxing coach opon Vince.

Those years were totally Arnold. His encyclopedia of bodybuilding is coming out, and you have Mike Mentzer obviously dominant preaching the opposite philosophy of training for success. Tom Platz as well changing, the game. In true nazi form, Arnold had to crush his opposition (Mentzer particularly) in order to maintain his dictatorship....Plain and simple. It seems obvious in hindsight. The actions after the crimes shed light on the motivation.

As a "sport" bodybuilding has always suffered from its subjective scoring. While clear miscarriages of justice like these examples are difficult to argue, without a numerical metric for performance there will always be controversy. In a way it's what makes it so popular. Everyone roots for their favourite and argues the toss over their wins and losses. Certainly UA-cam love us lot arguing apples and oranges with each-other. Now at the age of 50 I can't help but think who cares? It's grown men trying to out-man one-another in a non-contact way. Bodybuilding has taken on a whole new macabre look to me now, and I can't help but think the whole thing is a bit daft. And before the hate comes rolling in, I still lift weights and have done for over 35 years. I will only stop the day I can't get out of bed anymore. The health-benefits are unquestionable, the beauty pageant has long since lost it's allure. Sorry if that sounds negative. I guess I'm wondering if anyone else thinks the same.

I would classify arnold schwarzenegger as a typical sociopath, these people are all around us. Some are like him high achieving and some are low achievers, they dont all stab people in showers. You can usualy spot one in the workplace grovelling to the boss or in a bar grovelling to the landlord ect. Its pathetic that people dont pick up on these people. Mike mentzer was an intelligent man and what he should have done was to call schwarzenegger a sociopath, which is true to everyone in the public eye that he could and in every interview he did.

John do you have the actual footage when everyone was booing at Arnold - 1980 Olympia? Someone must have the original footage!
More importantly have you ever heard or come across in your research, that the weider brothers photo shopped Arnolds physique (1980) for the magazines?

    • @HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE
      @HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE  4 місяці тому +8

You can hear some of the booing in the GMV video of the competition. The booing was edited out in the documentary, entitled “The Comeback.” In fact, they cut Arnold’s victory speech short in the documentary because of the booing. I don’t know that the photos were altered in Joe Weider’s publications, but I do know from the late Peter McGough, who was the editor in chief for the magazine, that all of the comparison photos of Arnold with the other bodybuilders disappeared from the Weider archives.

Well, if you are going to get away with one crime why not another? I met Mike in February 1979 after he'd just won the 1978 Mr. Universe. Before the 1980 Olympia - Mike had known defeat by losing to the less complete Kal Szkalak (1977 Mr. Universe) tremendous upper body weak legs. But losing to no-legs Ahhnold in 1980 that was both a crime and a travesty for Mike and the other competitors. And Franco - what a joke in 1981 (Padilla #1 Platz #2 Franco #8).
