It is the most hotly debated contest in the history of bodybuilding. Should Arnold have won? Should Mike Mentzer have won? Should somebody else have won?
It seems everybody has an opinion. Fans of Arnold Schwarzenegger, along with those in the bodybuilding industry who profited from his win, have argued over the decades that his victory was justified. But even with an entire industry advancing that narrative, the controversy has continued. Particularly telling is the fact that on Arnold’s recent Netflix documentary, no mention is made of this contest at all, despite the fact that Arnold purchased the footage to the documentary made of the contests by his friend, Paul Graham (who was also the promoter of the contest), and could’ve made it available.
Some of the critiques have been that the contest was over 40 years ago, and most of the people commenting on who should’ve won weren’t even born when the contest took place. Each side has its fanboys.
I decided to take a different approach. The great bodybuilding champion and podcast host, John Hansen, Interviewed most of the competitors from that contest, while Wayne Gallasch, the renowned videographer from Australia, filmed the competition on super 8 mm film (and also recorded a very telling seminar featuring Bill Pearl and Dennis Tinnerino, who gave their views on the contest). Certainly, The testimony of these men negates the criticism of not having been born when the contest occurred and also none of these bodybuilders were fanboys of the other competitors. Consequently, their opinions on the matter carry considerable weight.
Even more so, each of these competitors were great bodybuilding champions (unlike many who have publicly opined on the matter); they knew what was required, in terms of shape, symmetry, mass, definition, proportion and presentation in order to win a professional bodybuilding contest such as the Mr. Olympia. Indeed, three of the competitors in the contest were current or future Mr. Olympia winners themselves.
Based upon the names that they mentioned most frequently in terms of who they had in the running for the title, an alternative voting system and conclusion, can be obtained.
This video presents this for the first time.

Everyone knows it should NOT have been Arnold. As he much as he did for the sport, he didn't deserve it.
Very true.
Hollywood
Regardless of who SHOULD have won that contest, Mike Mentzer has always been my favorite. He was a thinking man's bodybuilder. I started using his Heavy Duty training system when he introduced it in the late 1970's & at 66 yrs. old I still use it today.
Mine too.
When i assume it was introduce at 1980. Then it is 43 years old. At that time you were 66 years old. So now you are at least 110 years old at the moment? If true, awesome achievement!
@David_Raab
He said he's 66 now and he still uses Mike's way of training. He didn't say he was 66 when he started using it.
@@mrman2415 If he would had said it so clearly, i wouldn't have asked. But i guess that this is what he meant.
@@David_Raab He could have been it expressed it more clearly, but I understood his intention of saying he still uses HD today and at 66 years of age.
Robinson said it!
They can't let Mike get anywhere near top 3 cause he was not a part of "Weider system" and they can't let "Heavy Duty" take over
O MISTER OLIMPYA É UM MONOPÓLIO,UMA FACÇÃO CONTROLADO PELA MÁFIA DA FAMÍLIA WEIDER,E EMPRESÁRIOS INESCRUPULOSOS,SO VENCEM ATLETAS QUEM ELES PERMITEM.
O MISTER OLIMPYA JÁ PERDEU O SEU GLAMOUR À MUITO TEMPO.
So true. Like you wrote it Robinson said it!
That's why instead of quitting, he should have started his own Federation, or at least an annual Pro show. Or joined the WABBA, or NABBA. I think he would have lived longer.
@@ASTRUM502much easier said than done
@@rahulk2633 Well, it's all the past now. But I think it would have been easy for him to join the NABBA, be the reigning Pro Mr. Universe, and write articles for Muscular Development magazine. I wish he'd done it.
My respect for Arnold went completely down the drain when i realised how much he genuinely hurt others just because he is an egomaniac that couldn’t handle a loss
We broke 100K!!!
Videos and Pictures dont lie it should have been Mike Mentzer! Arnolds legs were non existent, Mentzer blew arnold especially from the back!
Mike’s muscles looked more dense and defined than Arnold’s fluffier looking muscles.
Mentzer blew Arnold from the back?
Jesus.
Idk man frank Zane was shredded that year
@@kiryuchan860😭😭😭
Il a fini 5eme donc non il n'aurait pas pu gagné.
Mike Mentzer was my hero. Still followed by thousands even today.
Mike deserved that Win! He got Robbed. Great Video John !! ❤
Mike Mentzer was the true winner, he wouldn't have beaten 1974 Arnold but yeah 1980 Arnold had the judges in his back pocket.
Robinson ending commentary is pure gold. Thank you very much Mr. Little.
I mostly agree with Pearl: 1) Mike Mentzer 2) Boyer Coe 3) Frank Zane 4) Dennis Tinerino 5) Chris Dickerson
Mike Mentzer always and forever. We are still following his teachings.
The quality of the video is absolutely outstanding, very clear, easy to understand and letting the competitors do the talking and provide their perspective.
It’s actually quite an emotional one knowing what happened to Mike after this.
Once again absolutely fantastic video John and you should be proud of the legacy you’ve help establish for Mike.
Thanks for the kind words!
Thanks for this great video! No more speculation, Mike was the 1980 Mr Olimpia winner 🏅🏆
Whats with the hate on Arnold he was definitely the winner huge arms chest and legs
Let's be real, after all it's quite a lucrative business, so on that contest Mike did not have a chance against Arnold and the judges, not because of lack of condition, shape or physiquewise, but because Arnold was a representative, the salesperson, the icon of the Weider system, therefore Weider gigantic business. Thanks John for the that video material, it was an amazing feeling to get back there and see the competition through the competitors eyes.
Greg Doucette had the balls to claim that there are no politics in bodybuilding. 🤦
CONGRATULATIONS ON 100K!!! Now on to 500K, this channel is absolutely AMAZING!!!💯💯💯💯💯
Thanks 🙏
Wow Mike looked WAY better than Arnold that year. Not even close.
UNCROWNED KING
Mike Mentzer...Best of The Best, Only One with 300pts in history, RIP Mike You and Frank, Chris, Dennis, Boyer and others are The really Champs of 1980 Olympia, Arnold was 6
Yes the Weiders were corrupt. But it was money and business 1st, bodybuilding 2nd ..... Greed ruins everything
I really feel for Mike. To rise to the challenge of a competition like that, and be one of the best, only to get slapped into reality of it being a advertisement for a business. Like so many things in life, you expect people act with respect and honour, only to be given lame excuses for terrible behaviour. No wonder he walked away.
congrats on 100k subs
Thanks!
So proud of you John, been here since around 30k i believe!!
Thanks!
Evertbody ask youself a question.
Would Arnold come out of retirement and risk his PERFECT record of wins in every Olympia he competed in?
I doubt it.
But if Arnold could get the judges to rig the contest in his favor then he could easily come out of retirement without having to risk his perfect record of wins as the contest would already be rigged in his favor.
MENTZER should have won purely on overall muscle separation throughout the ENTIRE body.
Arnold lost to Sergo in 1969, may well have lost in 1971 of Weirder did not DQ every other competitor in the contest, and Sergio was robbed in 1972 much as Mentzer was in 1980 and arguably 1979 as well.
They could not have outsiders beating the Weider systems golden goose after all, even where warranted.
Others could be noted but 1972, 1980, and 1981's results were particularly disgraceful.
@@shawnm4189 Excellent point
Almost 45 years ago and people still talk about the 1980 show. No one cares about the current contests.
I don't agree about that, but what hurt current bodybuilding, I believe is all the newly added Divisions. The shows are way too much. I miss the days when we just had Men and Women.
Where can i find the full audio that played here of Mike talking
Mentzer and Zane!
more people need to see this video, great job
You gave us the foundation for the future. RIP MIKE
We would be in a different world now if the outcome of 1980 Mr Olympia matched the 6:47 timestamp
Ayeee best channel for bodybuilding holy shit good shit
To work so hard for that one competition, only to get it blatantly robbed must have broken Mentzer from the inside. Arnold was a really petty guy back then.
You just added one more. Subscribed!
Just now returning to all out high intensity low volume (one set) training. It is the real deal.
It's the mental aspect of doing less that beats you. It takes a mature critical thinking person to embrace this. Mike Mentzor nailed it - it really does work if you can stay the course and not start adding sets and reducing rest time between workouts.
Welcome aboard.
Mike Mentzer should have won.
Robinson's comments are 100% truth.
Mentzer should have won that!
This makes me a bit angry, and then 1981, even worse! There is nothing fair about this world.
There was no way Mike Mentzer was going to win this contest (or even place in the top 3) or even the following year (in 81), due to the promoters, judges, and subjectivity of the Weiders and their business empire of multi set-training procedures, supplementation, and bodybuilders loyalty to the company. Mike faced scrutiny, backlash, and he was punished because of it, even though he look superior to Arnold and the others
kudos john. this was a fantastic video
Thanks very much.
Mike Menzter. Should have won. Im not saying he was head and shoulders above anyone. But he had just enough to edge it. Certainly ahead of Chris Dickerson,Arnold,Zane,Coe.
My top 3 were
MIKE MENTZER
BOYER COE
FRANK ZANE
IMO Arnold should have been the one in 5th not Mike.
He was being shut out for being a rebel. And not going along with what the weiders wanted. Robby Robinson said it PERFECTLY. they were not going to ever allow Mike to win. MONEY MONEY MONEY..
Had Mike won Heavy Duty would have gone nuclear. And this would have damaged the Weiders bottom line. And that could not be allowed to happen. Mike was a threat to the status quo.
GREAT piece John!!!!
007
The rankings at the end of this video are far more palatable and realistic than the actual results. That being said Columbu's "win" the following year was even worse than Arnold's placing in 1980.
OMG, one day, it will be necessary to rejudge this contest, for the honour of those legendary bodybuilders, and wash the shame that Weider system created. And off course apologies to all post mortem....
Mike of course!
Mike.
Mentzer would have never won. Even if Arnold didn't compete. Because he was against the Weider System. Not representing it.
Arnold only won because the judges were in his pocket
I thought Boyer Coe should have won, and I would have had Mentzer second. The next year was just as bad with Franco winning.
No hate, no FAVORITISM and I have been bodybuilding since I was 14, but Chris Dickerson looked INCREDIBLE that particular day, far more than when he won 2 years later...
Mentzer. Next question?
I remember this Olympia well. In my opinion the winner was Mike Mentzer, second Boyer Coe and third Chris Dickerson.
I also remember the movie Pumping Iron very well too. Btw, Arnold claimed he had no weak points; in my opinion I challenge he did. I feel his pecs were too large in proportion to his arms and he lacked adequate abdominal's, and that's throughout his bodybuilding career.
Mentzer,Boyer,Zane. The following uear they Robbed Platz.76 they Robbed Zane
Mentzer
Mike Mentzer you have won our hearts !! 🥰
Boyer Coe?Cmon really lol it was Mentzer all the way
While I am a big Zane fan.... Mentzer did deserve it that year.
The bitter fact...
I have just started mike’s workout. Its been 2 weeks.I do the workout as described by mike but it continuesly going in my head that is that 30 min workout enough for muscle gwoth.what about the other exercises and how to each head of each muscle will be targeted.
Please guide me about that🙏
You have been brainwashed by the “weider system”
Do yourself a knowledge favour, get the book the wisdom of mike mentzer , the answers you seek are in there, after you have read that book then view some of the videos on the tube, then watch his trying of Markus videos , then get HD II, it will all sink in. Mike was unwavering in his concept from his early bulletins to his last book, his consistency is there and does not change . Your droughts will be answered given this sequence of data gathering. I know as I have been doing HD works outs since 1986 or so and have most of his rare bulletins and all of his books.
Bisognerebbe dare a Mike mentzer il mister 0lympia anche se ormai e tardi alla memoria e stato un furto scandaloso.
It's a toss up between Roy Calendar, Sammir Bannout, and Danny Padilla.
Arnold Schwarzenegger shouldn't have placed in the top five.
Mike and Boyer were the best that day hands down.
Mr Little, do you recomend body by science?
Mike is like the “ perfectly sculpted physique “ and Frank Zane golden genetics. Arnold looked a little intoxicated in my opinion. 😂
he was on coke
here no one said arnold should have won. no points for arnold. tom platz said there is no way that arnold can lose to mike but this is not a point about WHO SHOULD win. and someone else also did not give him a point but the author counted it anyway.
so mentzer had a problem and this is his training method. what a pathetic way to lose. shame on judges. mike is the winner even if he did not get the trophy
Zane is most shredded Arnold is biggest Mikes arms are almost the same size as Arnolds and he's nearly as shredded as zane,Mike if judged fairly and objectively would win the Olympia only seperated by a few points would be zane ,walker, and Coe.
MIKE Mentzer won hands down, RIP Mike you are missed.
I never commented been watching for like 5 months
Absolutely Mike
Arnold should have been between 3rd and 5th. I’ve never seen quads that small on any mr Olympia competitor in my life other then Joel Stubbs . Arnold’s quads literally looked 17-18 inches . Was watery and soft during prejudging . His chest was way down in size also . Mentzer , Boyer coe, Dickerson , platz , Roy callender all looked better
6:35 mike mentzer was the unofficial winner no debate.
Damn
Mike is my favorite and believe he should have won, but as his fan, I feel let down that he quit. I wish he'd just kept on and came back, or started a new rival federation, or joined another already in existence. A bodybuilding fan wants to see their man on stage, and Mike quitting, I think was the wrong move, for him too.
Thanks
Yes, that’s my interpretation of what Mike recommended.
Tom Platz
Mike won
Mentzer. That was easy.
Arnolds legs were pathetic.MENTZER easily won
Mike mentzer looked very full for sure.
ARNOLD still looked WAY BETTER!!!
Better than who?
Spectacles needed here.
Delusional
Better than you, maybe.
Rigged event. Arnold was not in Olympia shape, others were.
Congrats on 100K and Coongrats to Mentzer for winning the 1980 Mr Olympia
