The real question is: for 60k, do we get the cracking engine block? It was a feature I really loved in the ford focus and the four cylinder mustang...one can only hope. Fans can petition ford to include that highly sought after feature in the new Explorer!
For what ever reason, Ford changes their trim levels between the SUV's and F-series trucks. Platinum trim level is way under the Limited trim in the trucks, and just the opposite in the SUV's
They are probably two entirely different departments, and never talk to each other. Not many trucks with a suv counterpart anymore, ie excursion and superduty, explorer, and f150, tahoe, silverado etc
@@BenKempa Never talking to each other is the most likely reason for the flip flop in trim levels. Still one would think that some one at Ford would realize that a Platinum on a F series is a lower trim level than the Limited and the Platinum on SUV is a higher trim level on then the Limited. One wonders why a potential customer whom may be confused with all of it has to point this out. I'm personally considering both platforms and trim levels.

In other Ford Explorer news, Ford recalled 1.2 million 2011-2017 Explorers for suspension issues in which the toe link can separate and cause a crash. Hopefully Ford fixed this issue with the upcoming Explorer.
In my opinion the current gen explorer is about the best looking suv ever made. Id have to see the 2019 in person but from the videos and pictures, i really dont like that front end amd i hate that giant portrait oriented screen. Otherwise the interior looks really nice.
True, but 5600 is a lot of weight for an assumed lighter weight unibody vehicle. Correct me if I’m wrong and it actually has a frame. Hook up a 5600 lb RV/wind sail behind this and it will be the tail wagging the dog.
@@grumpyengg5978 The Explorer is unibody, but Dodge and Jeep already proved with the Durango and Grand Cherokee that you can tow quite a lot more than 5600lbs with a unibody vehicle. Ford could have easily made the explorer tow north of 7000lbs if they really wanted to.
Michael Miller sure they could have. But truthfully I’d rather be towing with a heavier truck if I’m towing that much. Much more stable down the highway. You definitely don’t want to feel like your load is controlling you
Mid_South_RZR thats how I felt about it too, especially when realizing damn we’ll be seeing this look for a couple years too, but It’s been months since I’ve first seen it and feelings kinda change it’s a “it’s that bad” relationship now
I’ve actually towed 2 commercial zero turns with my wife’s when I sold my truck and needed something to tow with for a few days and it actually did very very well and was stable with the 6 1/2 x 16 trailer and both mowers
All I can say about the RWD biased layout is... About time! The offroad community will probably star reconsidering the explorer as an option. It's not going to be as good as the bronco since that will almost definitely have a true 4x4 system, but at least the explorer will compete with the grand Cherokee.
Was the Explorer ever an option? I can not stand Dodge but I think i would sooner buy a Jeep Wrangler, if I was going to do off roading to the point it influenced my purchasing decision. Anything lighter then that and my Fx4 packaged F-150 is good enough.
Back in the day when it had actual 4x4 it certainly was, but with the change to front wheel drive it really had no chance. At least now they could ostensibly come out with an offroad capable one that would compete with the grand Cherokee. The grand Cherokee also has not retained its offroad heritage.
Absolutely agree about the older Explorers being able to handle themselves off road. It's also sad about the Grand Cherokee, but that has turned into a status symbol vehicle. I think Ford is putting their chips on the Raptor and F150 for off pavement stuff, and potentially the Bronco if they do it right.
Ford is doing this right -- to fight the competitions, they have to compete on strength. Ford's strength is their more powerful engines. Now... only if they can get rid of that failure-prone built-in water pump.
Wow, is the internet still over-exaggerating the water pump myth? That whole thing stemmed from one video about the 3.5/3.7L Duratec engines with a "lifetime" water pump that usually lasts over 200k miles. By that time you're due for a timing chain replacement anyway so you might as well swap the water pump while you're in there. And the EcoBoost engines don't even use that type of water pump, it's externally mounted and anyone with 2 seconds to Google this can see for themselves.
This one has an EXTERNAL water pump....I have ZERO doubt why the whole redesign - going from FWD to RWD....so they could put BACK in a longitudinal engine (more room for external pump. P.S. The 2.7/3.7 F150 versions had external pumps.)
7:39 The “auto hold’s” primary purpose is prevent the vehicle from creeping forward when break is released while the drive selector is in “drive” or any other forward gear. It will also prevent the vehicle from moving backward if the drive selector is in “reverse”

That infotainment system is way out of place. Ford has some trouble integrating their infotainment screens into the dashboard. Even in Lincolns, it looks stupid. I hate screens that are just stuck on rather than designed as a part of the interior
The 2020 Ford Explorer XLT is the best bang for the buck. Incentives, 0% financing (right now) make it a no brainer option. This vehicle is great with the right XLT options. Enjoying mine as a recent purchase more than any other vehicle before. Good stuff going on with this vehicle.
It is kind of silly to complain about the vertical infotainment screen. This is an OPTION available on the Platinum and ST only. You don’t have to get it, and 90% of Explorers probably won’t have it.
I wish they would offer this same vehicle in a two row, five passenger configuration. With a five passenger version, there would be over 60 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. Actually, with the elimination of the third row arm rests / cup holders, and a lower load floor without the seats, it might be even more.
You can, I've the bench seat option on 2nd row, so if you fold down the 3rd row you still have a 5 passenger vehicule. I know you wrote this 3 years ago but thought I would say it's possible since that is the config I have for my 2022.

New Outback is the only one that has done it right so far that I can think of. Tesla started this weird trend, right?
Hate the screen as well. Totally unnecessary and I will never buy a car that has one like that.
They should have copied the infotainment system on the Traverse.
Yeah, the Infotainment Center looks like a Afterthought on the Interior .
I drove one last week. Pretty awesome. The power isn’t nuts, but it’s very fun. The switch to sport mode has one of the most aggressive increases in exhaust volume I’ve ever seen in a car.
I like that New Ford Explore ST in Blue👍👍👍👍
The real question is: for 60k, do we get the cracking engine block? It was a feature I really loved in the ford focus and the four cylinder mustang...one can only hope. Fans can petition ford to include that highly sought after feature in the new Explorer!
I keep hoping that the idea of a giant ipad stuck on the dash will die.
I mean if they didn't make it so tall it wouldn't stick out too much, but oh well.
I want one!! Always loved Explorers.
Andre probably should have mentioned the Lincoln Aviator during the comparo segment.
For roughly 2k-5k more you can get a New SRT Durango! Maybe even for the same price depending on the dealer. I’ll go Durango.
Brett McCoy yup. It’s a shame Ford doesn’t use the Coyote in their SUVs and cars.
@@agaad22 a fly on the wall told me they're on the chopping block. V8s for non-commercial use is on borrowed time.
Devin Bender 25 years old plz explain? Also if your saying the Mercedes platform they use us 25 years old you are incorrect. It’s definitely not lite but either is the explorer and it does in my opinion need a refresh but st the same time they still look better interior and exterior wise than the ST and it brand new. I feel the ST is a big improvement but at $60k I feel the missed the mark on pricing If it was $50-$52k then there’s a valid reason to get it but for that price there are better options is all I’m saying.
MoctezumasRevenge1 unfortunately I think that’s what’s going to happen to all V8’s. 😓
I wouldn't buy this Explorer, but I think the Durango is an even less chance of purchase for me even if it was cheaper.
I'm just here to read all the tablet comments, when you drive around and see pretty much everyone with their huge smart phones stuck on their windshields
I hated it at first, until I saw it in person. It really grew on me quickly. That being said, the only thing I (still) don't like about the car is how the grille pokes out between the headlamps and the bumper.
I really like your camera focus on details, demonstrating the practicality without talking on and on!
4:53 Those brake calipers don’t appear to be special at all. Just ordinary brake calipers painted red.
Jesse Cavada Indeed, just like any other American brand, they will just tweak the colors and...BOOM! 💥 a whole new model for $20k +
What the hell do you except for $60,000 Brembo?
I am very in-love with this new truck , I definitely have to get a ST!!
Nice review, Andre. Kudos to Ford for using a RR Drive platform! The new Explorer looks great! I'd put a towel over the tablet. :)
Every time i watch a new SUV review, I only appreciate my 2006 Pathfinder that I’ve taken through 3 ft+ deep wadis, up steep mountains, 6 story high desert dunes & much more for the past 6 years. Everything’s stock except for the Bilstein shocks AND I’m the THIRD owner!
This looks cool, but I still like the telluride better
In other Ford Explorer news, Ford recalled 1.2 million 2011-2017 Explorers for suspension issues in which the toe link can separate and cause a crash. Hopefully Ford fixed this issue with the upcoming Explorer.
In my opinion the current gen explorer is about the best looking suv ever made. Id have to see the 2019 in person but from the videos and pictures, i really dont like that front end amd i hate that giant portrait oriented screen. Otherwise the interior looks really nice.
Excellent!!!! Appreciate all the interior details on controls and buttons! Thank you.
I don’t know, I think the headlights look way too big, but the side and rear are an improvement from last gen
So basically, ford didn't go above 5600 lbs in towing because they didn't want to cannibalize expedition sales.
Yes :)
Yup
You definitely don’t want to feel like your load is controlling you
Companies need to stop putting touch screens in vehicles that just pop out of the dash. It’s so UGLY
I'm sure the gynocentric designers are behind these large tablets glued to the dash.
The front end is hideous, period. Can't take the Fiesta ST or Focus RS grille and put it on a full-size crossover. The front-end design does not work.
Mid_South_RZR what crack are you smoking
Mid_South_RZR thats how I felt about it too, especially when realizing damn we’ll be seeing this look for a couple years too, but It’s been months since I’ve first seen it and feelings kinda change it’s a “it’s that bad” relationship now
Mid_South_RZR it’s not aggressive enough. Too bubbly and curvy.
RWD FTW! Should be much easier on the tires !
I like everything Andre reported about. The new Explorer looks great and that engine seems even better.
I think ford is basing their SUV’s on the F-150, especially the raptor which is a big success in terms of efficiency and reliability.
towing ratings for these types of vehicles should not even be a consideration. 99 percent of these will tow bicycles on a rack, and that's about it.
I’ve actually towed 2 commercial zero turns with my wife’s when I sold my truck and needed something to tow with for a few days and it actually did very very well and was stable with the 6 1/2 x 16 trailer and both mowers
Don't forget the occasional trip with one of those trendy, over-priced "adventure" camp trailers.
Can’t believe they killed the focus and fiesta st for this
All I can say about the RWD biased layout is...
Explorer isn't made to be an off road vehicle any more.
I think Ford is putting their chips on the Raptor and F150 for off pavement stuff, and potentially the Bronco if they do it right.
i really like it. ford nailed it. Plus it will sell great.
400hp? These cops are gonna be on our asses 😂
Ford is doing this right -- to fight the competitions, they have to compete on strength. Ford's strength is their more powerful engines.
Now... only if they can get rid of that failure-prone built-in water pump.
That’s what I like about ford. You can get a high performance engine in almost anything they sell.
I'm fairly certain this engine setup doesn't have an internal pump!
Never in my life did I think they'll see a 60 grand explorer .
I think I'll be exploring other SUVs.
Nope not buying it, keeping my $60,000.00. I'll buy yours in a year at a discount.
Kia Telluride for the WIN!!! Preformance may be good but the new Telluride is better and waaaaay cheaper imo.
Exactly it's waaaaay cheaper as in cheap-er
sf sweet dude ford is trash to begin with what are u talking about. I wouldn’t waste 60k for a ford, especially if its this ugly. Sounds like u like getting it in the a** by ford, have fun with that.
Looked like someone already smacked the right rear corner of the bumper.
Love this horsepower battle amongst the manufacturers!
Well I already miss the last body style look
But over all the new one is much better
That infotainment system is way out of place. Ford has some trouble integrating their infotainment screens into the dashboard. Even in Lincolns, it looks stupid. I hate screens that are just stuck on rather than designed as a part of the interior
Did he just infer that anyone a "little less" than 6'02" is child-sized? LOL
Thanx for your review Don't forget the Lincoln aviator i get to make these trucks everyday at ford motor company😁😎
chikidd24 keep up the hard work! Thanks for building the great cars that wear the ford name
@@amban1352 thank you i appreciate that. im so lucky to assemble these beautiful suvs! 😊
It is kind of silly to complain about the vertical infotainment screen. This is an OPTION available on the Platinum and ST only. You don’t have to get it, and 90% of Explorers probably won’t have it.
Should have put a coyote motor in there with the ten speed.
How's the build quality this time around? Will there be another major recall 3 years down the road?
Looks like the cops just got faster.
I love the overall styling of the new Explorer. I think the shape of grille will grow on me with time.
LOOKS AMAZING BRUH!
The panels do not look sharp and fresh enough as a brand new car built in 2019.
I think it’s the best looking explore ever. And yes I also like the front end! I would love to have that with that engine in it. Thumbs up to Ford.
