My mom has a 2013 Explorer Sport that she got brand new. Growing up I LOVED driving it. At the time it was the fastest car I had ever driven until I got my 05 WRX. It could keep up with my WRX (which was far from stock). She still has the Explorer to this day. 145,000 miles and not a single problem with it. 💪🏼
I had the same experience, ‘13 XLT with the 3.5 NA, learned how to drive in that car and drove it all through high school. When I moved away my mom and I swapped cars for the past 2 years, and when I asked my dad if he could keep a look out for some cheap cars back where he lived (car I was driving was registered and insured by my mom) my dad just offered me the title to the explorer. Very glad to have it back, it’s about to hit 210k miles
I have installed a Ford tune, a Steeda intercooler, and a Steeda rear sway bar on my ST. This protects my warranty for the time being. Had a fun day at Charlotte Motor Speedway on the Roval with the Ford Racing School Mustangs and it occurred to me how much fun a Mustang would be with an ST drivetrain. AWD would create a Mustang that one could drive most of the winter, here in Michigan, rather than a fair weather friend. I don’t expect a $60,000 ST to be faster than a smaller $90,000 Trackhawk. I actually take trips in mine with the wife, dogs, and gear, with reasonable gas mileage. Cheers, Tony
Love my 2021 Explorer ST. Never would have thought I would have owned one, until I drove it...then later tuned it. It is truly a beast. My concern, after two years of ownership, are the electronic gremlins (rear camera, side sensors, intelli-cruise faults, blue-tooth disconnects, power window auto up/down) that are randomly popping up. Additionally, I've had to replace one front half-shaft and already broke the rear bolt holding the rear diff to the subframe (mine has one bolt). While Ford replaced it under warranty (with a one bolt unit), I'm not sure it will hold up as this is my experience at 42k miles.
This is EXACTLY why after numerous F150s, 31 Mustangs through the years, and even a Powerstroke diesel; I now have a Toyota truck for work use and a Lexus daily driver. Piles of miles with NO failures. Still have a Foxbody for knuckledragger fun, but I’ll never buy a new Ford again…

That in itself was a hell no for me on any of these newer engines

Ford really should make an Explorer RS (or ST-R?) with the 3.5 TT and the factory 440hp/510ft-lb. The same tweaks on the 3.5 yield huge gains from an already stronger engine.

Found a Durango Hellcat in-stock at price with options I wanted. Cancelled ST order and bought Durango Hellcat. Not looking back. The DRT with a naturally aspirated V8 will be the better SUV to own long term, no doubt..... That EB will not get significant better mpgs vs the 5.7 with real world driving (turbos are thirsty and you've now got the addl AWD weight / drag garbage over the RT)... Keep in mind also you're looking at premium vs regular in the RT V8, that will affect you more negatively in fuel costs vs the stated mpg of the ST... Just my 2 cents... I briefly looked at the ST as I had hoped they stuffed a 5.0 in them. Once I saw that EB, nope went straight for the DRT RT.
The durango SRT also costs like 20k more when all is said and done. The ST is in a league of its own being a fast but cheaper SUV. Comparing the ST to durango hellcats or jeep trackhawks just doesn't make sense with the massive price difference.

Ecoboost engines are actually quite beefy in the reliability department. You're always going to hear about those horror stories with any vehicle/engine. Considering the fact that ford's prob made 5 million plus Ecoboost engines, and the overwhelming majority of them have been rock solid reliable, that's pretty impressive.
For most daily drivers like myself. These tires work fine on my AWD ST. Like all vehicles you can go after market with wider rubber like 305/35. I want traction in snow and rain for winter months when my tuned Chrysler 300C Hemi and 2018 Mustang GT PP2 gets parked.
@Catholic Firefighter I’m not comfortable with 255 ‘narrow’ tires on the Explorer ST. A Kia Sorento has stock 255 wide tires, as does a Ford Mustang GT. 275 wide tires or better on a Ford Explorer ST makes a better choice for improvement in performance. And looks better too.
@Catholic Firefighter well, ‘looks’ is a personal category, and looks have some part in the performance of automobiles. The narrative is about the performance of the ST in a somewhat comparison of a standard Explorer. I’m comfortable with wider high performance tires on a near 6000 pound high performance SUV. A Kia with 255 tires has a coefficient cornering g ratio greater than a 255 shod ST Explorer. Biden+Forget about Ukraine+Reparations

I did get the tic at 120K miles but I wasn't really keeping up on oil changes so it's hard to blame it all on the Hemi.
@Catholic Firefighter if I had a daily commute to work mpg would be a bigger factor, but 80% of my work is from home. Plus my wife drives a Ford Fusion Hybrid so it’s a good balance.
@Catholic Firefighter I completely agree with you. It comes down to what your personal needs and budget are. If you need the extra towing capacity like me then get R/T if you want to save a few bucks at the pump and be quicker off the line then ST. If you want freakishly fast then SRT or Hellcat. If you're a gearhead and want to build a monster HP machine R/T.
If they put that 3.0TT motor in anything else other than a $100k truck or a police car, Ford may have a tuner following with the 3.0TT.
This should’ve been the ecoboost mustang
@Adios YT Yes but then that car would have smoked the gt just like the buick gnx did back in 80's killing the corvette.
Bro, this is a 50k SUV, even the bronco raptor fully loaded only gets up to like 85k. I don't know where you're getting that figure from.
@@themidnighttavern6784
-Bronco Raptors new are going for $125k
-$50k for a grocery getter/police car that will soon be at police auctions everywhere for $10k??
@@tooshmart6669 Mk5 supras are going for 150 grand. The new Hellcat 180s are 300 grand. Dealerships are greedy, if we're going off the maximum price some scumbag dealerships are charging, I can do this all day. But there are plenty of decent, respectable dealerships. You just need to take the time to find them.
Our local Ford dealer isn't charging markups on any customer ordered vehicles.
I have a twin turbo 5.0 convertible, that looks stock and this soccer dads in Explorer ST's always trying to race me. 😂. I am way to loud and fast for regular city streets, so sometimes i let them go and they think i don't want the smoke.
Owned a 18 Trackhawk and sold it to build a monster Ram 1500 with forged 426 and 2650 blower. Love it but wasn't reliable and easy as a daily driver. Cross shopped ST and Durango Hellcat finally deciding on ST with intent to do bolt-on mods unlike complete engine build of hemi (learned my lesson for daily driver). ST order kept being delayed. Found a Durango Hellcat in-stock at price with options I wanted. Cancelled ST order and bought Durango Hellcat. Not looking back. The hellcat motor is just raw and with some bolt-on mods the ST will never come close (if you mod the ST then mod the hellcat to be fair). Just don't track fuel consumption because it sucks. Better than Ram with 426 but still a pig. Then again we don't buy these for the fuel mileage.
Amen on the gas mileage 😂 6mpg averages in town and in eco on a road trip the best I’ve seen is 15.5mpg. It’s all about those smiles per gallon.
I love the Confidence Boost these vids give ST Owners 😁👍
LOL, right! Yes, the STs are sweet but let's not kid ourselves. The Hellcst Durango slays Lamborghini Urus, so this isn't quite gonna do it.
@hellkitty1014 yeah, the ST's are quick with some mods... Just not quick enough 🤣
Hahaha.. seriously... also it's a great indirect marketing program for Ford repair shops.
I see they make a Explorer ST but i think they should have made a Explorer GT with a 5.0
I will admit that is a bad title but damn this is a actual decent SUV, 3 row seating Good gas mileage & it looks fun to drive I was thinking about a durango srt because ofc I want that V8 power but this seems to be a more wallet economical choice 18-24mpg is alot better than 12-18mpg
Don't believe the shell game.... If you drive that ST regularly it will get same if not worse mpg than the Durango... Any turbo owner will tell you real mpgs are much worse then suggested... Skip the EB mess and and get the Durango for a reliable buildable platform.
@@highwayman1218 even If I don’t mod it, I mean I was just gonna maybe do an exhaust upgrade no tune you think it’ll still have the same mpg as the durango
@@jcosby51
Honestly IMHO you buy a TT for a tuner ride.... If you're not going tuner route, why buy the ST over the DRT?
WOW--WELL DONE REVIEW ON THE EXPLORER ST TUNES-WICKED--THANKS ROADS UNTRAVELED
Hahaha wicked man np
To be fair Hellcats are made to be destroyed by anything not called Hellcat..they are just high horsepower RWD traction less monsters, all bark with little nibbles. But a fast Explorer is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.
This was before the Braptor. They had this engine in Lincolns before the ST. It was wild in an MKZ AWD
Have been eyeing the ST for the past 6 months. Was anticipating the market to cool, but the drop in prices really have not changed much.
Main reason I'm not buying atm, as much as I want to, ain't no way I'm spending 1k a month
@Disposable Dad 2023 - 24 guy not used cars
@Disposable Dad
Looks like a few have popped around me for similar year, price and mileage.
@Disposable Dad i also got a 2017 with 40,000 miles but keeping it as a toy.....been eyeballing a blue st for 53k 0%APR for 60 but fors dropped the ball on those sales on memorial day due to a recall smh
The Expl ST needed the 3.5 to be competitive with the Track Hawk and Durango Hellcat.
Definitely can't compare to a Hellcat!😂
The most badass family garage would be to have one of these and a CT5 Blackwing.
F90 M5 competition and X5M competition.
Coolness, delivered with every mile
The jeep was too thirsty so we went with the Ecoboost and added a bigger fuel pump and injectors. Nice!
First time I subscribed because of the intro. GGs
Best performance SUV on the market
I'm a Ford man and I promise 500 horses aren't going to beat a hell cat. Ford needs to make one with a V8 😊
Nobody said it would. It’s a 6,000 lb SUV! Just tuned mine and I love it.
@@silverfox1546Well many of these STs already have beat many Hellcats. It's time to accept those cars aren't as "fast" as they advertise. I smoked a Hellcat Challenger in the 1/8 NA with my RAM AIR Fusion Sport. It's the AWD......
@@duke45jp agree with you plus they have tons of problems.
@@duke45jp did a street tune on my 23 ST a few weeks ago. Still letting the transmission adjust BUT gave it about 50% in normal mode and broke the tires when 5th gear hit. Nervous about using the Sport mode!
@@silverfox1546 Does the Sport mode widen gear ratios a bit? Are the shifts more aggressive?
The raptor has never had a 3.0, it’s always been the 3.5 eco since the 6.2L was replaced. And now 5.2 R v8 option
He actually said Braaptor (Bronco Raptor).
Bronco and ranger
I wonder if you can STUFF the 5.2R in it😲😲
Braptor (Bronco Raptor) as I mentioned has the 3.0L.
What exhaust ? Sounds awesome , about to trade my 2013 700 whp f-350 lariat for a 2020 explorer st with a bad front diff .
To leave the Hellcat in the dust, you'd have to somehow prevent the 10sp auto from puking its gears. Good luck!
For me it’s about the driving experience. Anything with an automatic trans. feels like a Winnebago to me. Even an underpowered rig with good tires and a 5 speed manual is fun. Especially on a windy 2 lane.
Rip my gmc envoy Denali 376 ls stroker kicked a lot of hellcats and mustangs and a Polaris slingshot. Big cam 500 plus wheel HP.
Stroker GM small blocks - best way to make power in a budget. Glad you did it! Love the sound of a lopey cam too. Such potential in that motor. 👍
I have one and put on a Borla exhaust and HPTune and it's 450 HP and is crazy to drive if you put your foot down. this is basically a police interceptor.
So what are the list of the complete mods of this build down to the brand of parts used?
I recently sold my 2020 Explorer ST. I'd buy another one when Ford works on their transmission reliability issues (problems at less than 10000 miles) and gets rid of Sync 3.
Wow,id like to have one.I do own a 2010 Crown Victoria, that explorer would look nice along side Crown Vic.
A long way to go to get to Hellcat land... my hellcat durango drove off the lot, doing 3.4 0-60 consistently.
Yep.... Worse of all you're still stuck with the EB under the hood also with the ST.... Hard pass on that.
@Catholic Firefighter I own a Durango Hellcat and that still made me laugh out loud. 🤣 so true
@catholicfirefighter Moving the goalposts?🤣🤣🤣
@catholicfirefighter sadly no security fixes for the 2021 😞 but yeah the 2023 appears to have gotten the RF Hub lockdown at least.
Awesome ride. You have to change the exhaust and get that drone out. It's horrendous. Unless you have multiple rides. Even in the video it's a nightmare. Because that's. She's a beauty❤
Nice review keep up the good work
Trying to figure out if I need to change the intercooler in my 2015 police interceptor utility 3.7 ??? Its already have been tuned too.
Nice content. Wife is in the same boat. This is her next car. Remember, Performance and fuel savings don’t go together!
Hey, 26mpg on the hwy at 60mph ain't bad... Atleast that's what I get in mine. But that's the prairies.
@@pandaeyes465 nice, i meant one of the reasons he bought the ST over the Durango was the fuel economy, then he added a tune, larger fuel injectors, etc. I’m sure he still gets better MPG but they got to be close. How you liking the ST? Everyone I talk to say they love it.any issues?
@@pandaeyes465 I’ll take 20 mpg combined in the jacked up ST any day. My supercharged truck gets like 14 and that’s good! Love the power.
@@georgiafan6618 boom.
Wouldn't the raptor have the 3.0 plucked put of the explorer st?
Yes. I should've said "shared with" to drive my point home. It was passed around a bit.. Continental, Explorer, Raptor, and a couple others.
Welcome to Warranty Heaven. I believe there is 20 ish recalls on these
suuurree
You’re laughing the whole time with a grin from ear to ear!
“Built to destroy “itself”” 😂
Ecoboost engines are actually quite beefy in the reliability department. You're always going to hear about those horror stories with any vehicle/engine.
Considering the fact that ford's prob made 5 million plus Ecoboost engines, and the overwhelming majority of them have been rock solid reliable, that's pretty impressive.
You mean the 3.0 from the Explorer ST went in to the Ford Bronco Raptor as the Explorer ST and 2 other Explorer trims with the 3.0 were first.
Awesome SUV 🏁Ford also makes the edge ST it has the 2.7 v6 Eco boost pretty cool SUV also with alot of potential!
I have an Edge ST, and yes it does. It a fantastic two roll SUV
Is the 3.5TT ecoboost worth buying?
That thing is an absolute monster
Nice to see someone cover this video.
Always loved the st explorer just wish they made a trim with the 5.0 in it. Shit would be sick
Wish they sold these in Australia. I've always loved the explorers
If the engine is behind the front axles wouldn't that make it front-mid mount?
I think it has to be fully behind thr axles and this isn't.
It’s about time Ford or somebody made this a real ST. Hope it has much wider tires than stock 255
@@DWH300 great idea.
The new ford tune on the 3.0 will make this a monster.
Guy in my town said he was going to embarrass my ram r/t. He was singing a different tune when he could not pass. Guess he thought it was a big 4 door.
The edge st has the 2.7 which the 3.0 is based off of...only difference is that it's based on front drive system
Thank god theres a full exhaust on this thing.
I'd hate to do a tune up on it, if it's pushed so far back, no thank you 😭

Dang, yeah. I forgot this is a V6
How much is it lowered and what brand of springs did you use? Also what size wheels and tires…? Thanks!!!
Great video and love the ST. Where did he get those nice black wheels?? Want to get them for my Red ST. Thanks
it sounds so good!
Wish they had this in a FWD Mini-Van!!
What type of transmission work did ge have have done to beef it up?
What I wanna know, there’s a 10r60 built trans some people get idk if he has that
some cops down here in Panama City Florida have explorer ST's. i feel sorry for anyone who think they could getaway, counting they are faster than regular ST's lol
I want to see for build one of these with a supercharged 5.0 or throw a gt500 engine in it with a 10 speed
Always loved ford explorers. Even though the 2011-2019 generation was always a let down in my opinion. These look great though. Not really sleepers anymore, I’m pretty sure everyone thinks twice before they roll with an st.
Anyone know the make and model of the rims? I love the look.
Do the FORD SUV'S still have the on going exhaust manifold leak that routes through your A/C on hard acceleration ?
I'm a little confused, as you said in the beginning of the video you said you listed them in order of lowest to highest trim level with platinum being the highest but the ST is more expensive so why would that not be the highest trim? 🤔 just curious as I'm in the process of doing my research for my next car.
What kind of wheels are on that ST? Looks great
I traded a 20 Jeep SRT for an ST and loved how quick the ST was but so many issues with tge truck. Ranging from transmission issues, blue screen, and randomly shutting off. I wanted the ST to win so bad but the reliability was so terrible. Lemon lawed it and got a hellcat. I would buy a 25 ST or possibly a 26 if Ford fixed all the issues.
Hey Ford, stop playing around and bring back the SHO. I am A SHO lover. Best sleeper car ever..
This really should be That Dude in Blue giving this review
Great car!
Nice but I’ve got 2021 bone stock all black ST and it’s amazingly fast and it gets 24.7 mpg on just regular and the clincher is the massage seats and adaptive cruise control with “drive itself” features. So why spend thousands more for shaving a second to 60? I don’t get it
I wish they'd bring back the Flex on this new chassis
4.25 sec on the street aint bad, but I don't think it's "Destroy Hellcats" fast. Sweet Explorer though!!!
In the past, increased HP has destroyed the stock transmission. How do you mitigate that risk?
Factory 10 speed or get a built transmission.
