Just got back from a little trip where we drove a Limited as our rental car. I’ve been researching a purchase since we got back. LOVED IT! So roomy, comfortable, great “get-up-and-go”. Got to have one.
I want to love this Explorer. Been extremely happy since 2002 with 5 consecutive Ford cars and trucks, no issues on any of them ( 2002 escape, 2006 explorer, 2010 f150, 2011 mustang gt and 2013 edge) The exterior styling is a hit, but the interior feels and looks underwhelming compared to the Telluride and Palissade I test drove on the same day. Also, I felt the steering had a weird feel to it at low speeds. But the biggest draw back is the 2.3 turbo. The nice salesman that took me on a test drive told me at one point to set it on sport mode and do a hard launch to show me the power; there is so much lag at take off that it feels like the truck is about to stall. Once that lag is gone, the truck does launch like a bat out of hell. It’s just a weird feeling. Call me old fashion, but I enjoy the linear feeling of non turbo v6 . Did not make my decision , still pondering and going to give the Honda passport a try before making my final decision ( I don’t really need the 3rd row, but do appreciate the overall size of available storage when in 2 row seating configuration)
If you drive a turbo car, putting premium is definitely worth it. Coming from a guy that used regular for almost 5 years, I immediately noticed a satisfying boost of power with premium after the second tank.
Dennis Xu @ uh yeah, right. Satisfying boost of power? I call bullshit! Suckers like you keep gasoline companies rolling in the dough! Read up a bit on ecoboost engines and then come back! (hint, ecoboost engines adapt to any fuel 87 octane and above)
I had a 2018 Limited as a rental for three weeks. I thought I’d hate it, but after a little while I was in love with it. I’m considering this one for my next lease, the only aspect I didn’t like about the limited is all the chrome.
I went and test drove one of these today and was really impressed by it!! I drove a limited model that stickers for right under 50000 but was listed for 48500! Anyway my thoughts 1 The ride is really good and we hit some roads that have uneveness and pot holes and the suspension soaked that up! Really good ride! The interior is better than i thought and looks really nice! Safety this thing has a tony of safey a list so long i am not going to name all that! Finally the B&O sound system blows away any system in any car under 60000 and is even better than the Burmester in Mercedes!! I cranked The lithium station on Satellite radio and was blown away then switched to the Hits station and Billie Eilish Bad Guy playing this system produces strong tight bass with clear mids and highs!! The Salesman agreed!! My thought yeah probably gonna buy i reallly like it!!!!
Most people don't realize the little gap in the front dashboard is easier to take off & on for service access (less chance of damaging). Everyone uses plastic and the area where it is hard it's because it's made more durable (you see in the future). The higher cost is because RWD is more expensive to make but they are more durable, tow better, and better performance (that's why European Luxury cars are RWD). You lose a little room in the third row because it's RWD. The Kia Telluride is roomier, but not as powerful (you mind as well as buy a minivan).
I never buy new cars. Just bought a 2020 XLT 2 weeks ago. After being a hardcore pickup driver, I really like my explorer And I absolutely LOVE the mpg difference Good looking suv and a great driver
it’s price that differentiates these SUV’s. I’ve recently test driven both the Palisade and the Platinum Explorer 2020. Cheap headliner in the Hyundai and funky mount under the bumper (looks after market) tow hitch! WTH The Palisade also lagged in transmission shifting when I attempted to accelerate quickly. Local dealers are charging 5k premium due to popularity, which then makes the prices comparable. So I’m the proud new owner of a 2020 Explorer Platinum! I actually put them side by side on the lot and looked at them both inside and out. Yes, I was that customer!
I like the new Explorer overall, but that screen is so big and ugly sticking out over the dashboard. Not sure if the dash is a deal breaker, but it would give me pause. The interior and cargo room are nice. Great review as usual.

Still not a big fan of the face, but I haven't seen it in real life yet. I love that the base engine is competitive with top engines the competition offers and even happier that it's RWD and offers a hybrid. I look forward to some comparisons.
Having seen the 2020 Explorer at an auto show. I found it to be greatly improved over the model it's replacing both inside and out. Great body lines. I found the front to be attractive. Slopping rear roofline. I'm a big fan of the ST. Looking forward to a test drive. Intererior was comfortable, with a luxury feel and loads of technology available. I should add the engine choices with hybrid technology is ahead of other similar SUV in this class.
For those still bemoaning the demise of Ford's sedans (and I understand that sentiment), the new Explorer at least indicates that the company hasn't been asleep at the switch in broadening the appeal of their SUV's. The new Explorer has much to recommend it. There is, however, one issue that deserves to be explored. I'm a fan of turbocharged 4 bangers in the 2.0-2.5L displacement category. I've been driving such vehicles since the '80's (Saabs) and I have a 2.0L turbo in my GTI. Furthermore, I seriously considered a Mustang last year with the same 2.3L Ecosport engine and 10 speed transmission. It was very impressive both in terms of acceleration and (with optional suspension upgrades) in terms of handling. All in all I found it to be a reasonable alternative to some European sports coupes. Having said that, however, a Mustang coupe loaded with fuel, and passengers weighs under 4000 lbs. A loaded Explorer is over 2.5 tons! Ford has apparently done a fine job in terms of maximizing the performance with the 2.3L turbo engine in the Explorer but I'm skeptical about the stress it's called upon to endure and the resulting impact on durability. If the 2.3L turbo were meant to be mainly a fleet model or a base engine aimed only at budget shoppers it would be one thing. But the Explorer is in a category competing with a number of vehicles that offer standard or optional naturally aspirated V6's. And the vast majority of Explorers in both the XLT and Limited trims will come with the 2.3L engine. Upgrading to a V6 or a hybrid power train pushes the MSRP to well over $50,000; in some trim combinations to over $60K. Those who purchase the new Explorer with the base engine will have to believe it's adequate in terms of performance and longevity. Any problems that arise will be down the road. And perhaps Ford has managed to deal with the fact that an engine is heavily stressed in a large, heavy vehicle. But it's something to think about.

Nice review! I finally bought a platinum and a big part was the 365hp/380fp engine, with 10 speed transmission. Ecoboost gives me 19.3 average, not babying it either. At first I thought I'd hate that big screen but bought it at a dealer 150 miles from home, and by the time I got home, I love it, and still do. I can easily glance and see lots of info, large size images/fonts. If it were tucked down lower, you'd have to take your eyes more off the road to see it. Ram also has a nice display better integrated into the panel. The 360 "overhead" image is fantastic for parking, etc but image could've been bigger. Hood prop is "old school" but I don't work on my cars, so doesn't matter how the hood stays open. Very quiet, love the handling, looks, ergonomics, color (silver spruce metallic). Good luck in buying it.
The new Ford Explorer doesn't meet nearly what it should considering it's a full re design. Once again Ford falls short. You shouldn't have to spend 50k+ to get a decent interior. It's interior is not as nice as other competitors and it's engines are not very well engineered resulting in bad MPG. If a 6 cylinder from a competitor does as good in MPG as a Ford 4 cylinder you know somethings wrong.
This was to deal with the recall they had on the outgoing model inhaling its own exhaust. I'm pretty sure almost all of the trims point down now for this reason but I haven't seen one up close.
Looking at the Telluride, I see that Kia made it taller in the back and a wee bit wider than the Explorer. Ford needs to make the third row 'special', like in the Telluride, with USB ports, dual cupholders, etc. This should show up in the 2021 refresh. Otherwise, not bad. I'd take this up a rough road vs a Telluride, cuz it actually happens a more true 4WD system.
No. The Explorer didn't always have a blacked out A pillar. Nor a D pillar that was blacked out. 1st, 2nd, nor 3rd gen Explorers had blacked out A pillars. The Explorer Sport nor Exploer Sport Trac had a blacked out C or D pillar
that main screen it must be a pain to the eyes while night driving...I have Renault Clio IV and sometimes I turn off the main screen when at night. Those 4 seats aren't good for a 5 members family. You can't lower all seats in the back because u need one of them for the 3rd child at least.
We just got an xlt for a work truck at my company, pretty nice, remote start, nice infotainment system, leather seats, decent acceleration from the turbo 4 cylinder, if I could change one thing it would be the drive selector, the dial makes it clunky to do a quick 3 point turn, but hopefully that will change when I get more used to it.
Lower octane fuels should not impact the power output of engines. Octane is not a measure of energy density, but rather of the resistance of the fuel to detonation as compression increases. High performance engines typically require high octane fuels (e.g. 93 octane using the U.S. method) because they operate at higher compression ratios. Using 87 octane fuel will cause a high performance engine to advance the spark timing to avoid engine detonation. While this will minimally reduce the power output of the engine, it's also true the high octane fuels have a slightly lower energy density than regular fuels, so the net difference should be negligible.
Very interesting reading the comments comparing this to Telluride/Palisade which I'm in the market for and have test driven Telluride. Will now have to cross-shop against the 2020 Explorer, which appears will drive better due to new rear-wheel drive.
Hyundai has more space, much better reliability and warranty, better equipment and comfort. I always loved Ford, but from financial perspective, they got seriously outclassed by Hyundai and Kia. Ford is $50/month more expensive (in Canada) for Limited versus Ultimate Palisade (that comes with more tech than MB GLS).
I love how everyone has forgotten there has already been a 7 seat, rwd based crossover that can tow up to 6000 lbs on the market for 8 years. It's called the Dodge Durango. Ford didn't do anything original here except the hybrid powertrains.
The price on it will definitely keep shoppers away from it. 63k for an Explorer, and it’s still missing some features that the Telluride has at 51k? many will just go for the Telluride or even pay a little more for a GLS.
@@ferreo1374 Well, it's tech isn't as easy to use as the Tellurides, and the Tellurides screen doesn't look like a stuck on iPad. The Telluride also has more thoughtful features, like a blind spot camera in the all-digital gauge cluster, and actual Nappa leather seats, Safe Exit Assist, Driver Talk, Ventilated REAR seats, and it's industry leading 10 year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. And it's 13k less than a comparable fully loaded Explorer Platinum.
Ferre O Well I mean why would someone buy something with less stuff for a stupid high asking price and a terrible interior? Id rather have more for less and a better warranty.
@@evanlandry9503 Reason for the Explorer is costing more is because it has a more expensive rear wheel drive platform. Tellurides is front wheel drive crossover like the old Explorer. Explorer has a more powerful engine line up and 10 speed transmission. The Telluride is only a 8 speed transmission. The Explorer will have better driving dynamics too because its rear wheel drive based platform. Telluride has no automatic back up braking and cannot park it self either. The Explorer is a all around better performer the Telluride.
This newest generation has a nicer look than the current 2019. The current 2019 Explorer is too bubbly, while the 2020 has perfect aerodynamics and straight angles of a true SUV. I'm also happy to see they went back to traditional RWD. Ford might have decided on this design due to the feedback of the current generation Mustang. The previous Mustang was too bubbly with all of its flares and curves, while the current Mustang has a good combination of straight angles and aerodynamics.
I wish you had touched on the driver assist features especially how it keeps the vehicle centered in the lane, I think that's a huge miss for this video! Had to go to another video for that.
I am on my 3rd Explorer (1994, 1998, 2005) and have not found another suv with the tight turning radius of each of my Explorers. One thing that these videos fail to show is how small of an area the 2020 can turn in so I can consider my 4th Ford.
Paul M it’s actually very intentional 😂. Almost every automaker has something similar. Those “floating screens” are a new trend and they aren’t going anywhere.
The floating tablet puts it close to the plane of your eye so you glance down less, that being said while I understand the ergonomic factor I'm afraid I would probably break the "tablet" with a 2x4 6 weeks in.
@@TimLucasdesign Well, that's subjective. Personally, I prefer the look of the Telluride, but this definitely drives better with that rear-wheel drive platform. Kinda bulky to me, but it's still good looking.
I’m very excited about the new Explorer! Looks great and that 400 HP EcoBoost is going to be great. On a side note; if you’re going to complain about the interior quality and use the Telluride (which I love) as a comparison you should probably use a picture of an actual Telluride. 😂
Wish you would go into the options, such as massaging seats. That's a benefit we are seeking and I have researched Fords until I am blue in the face. I'm about ready to buy a Audi or BMW because they don't hide these features, while Ford does. Why?
Yours is the highest quality of all the video reviews I’ve seen today. However, calling out the lack of 3-across 3rd row is a bit disingenuous. Rather, call out the competition for claiming room for 3 in 3rd row, even though they are narrower than the Explorer.
I have a 2019 Ford Explorer love it but ford your quality control needs to step up for what I paid for it door -analysts doesn’t match up with dash by a quarter inch door seal leaks paint on inside of bottom doors can see the primer under neath
My engineer friend at gmc told me that he always assume that the rwd chassis provide a better handling. I actually will and need to test drive both to determine if that's true.
I love the front facia look. I know the PIU had carbon monoxide leak issue in the cabin a few years back did it happen with the civilian model? Nice looking over all.
@moreno12 I’ve owned vehicles from both brands. Have you? Of course not. Kia is absolutely worthy of consideration, the Telluride is an incredible entry in this segment.
WoW it looks like a Range Rover especially the front end ! And another big WoW is the fact that you guys are using 87 octane ! I have NEVER heard of such a low octane number ever ! Hear in Europe we use 95 octane and that has been the standard for a very long time ! We also have 98 and 99 octane for performance cars that demands it !
MrChallenger76 that's cause across the pond you guys use Ron ratings and here in n/a we use Aki your 97 is our 91 octane... in n/a we just use a deferent rating system.... so our 87 octane is any where from 91-93 octane using Ron or mon numbers depending on your market.
Great masculine stance on the exterior, Dashboard has a cheap look to it which is a shame considering what Ford has achieved in the power-train options available.
Sir, how do you actually know what people will put in their car for fuel? So, your concern about what octane I might not use is why you failed to provide "hard numbers?" Why no front view of the instrument cluster? Very interesting review.
They are all 2nd gen EcoBoost(The 3.0EcoBoost is just a updated smaller 3.5EcoBoost and the 2.3 liter is a 2006-2009 Ford Fusion resourced engine that has been updated and refined+Turbo)

This video is from June 2019.
I prefer the boxy look of the older model. This new one appears tapered or squashed in the back.
Looks pretty good, going to test drive after this review. Thanks
just bought one two months ago...its a great vehicle
The Telluride in Sx trim still seems to be the winner here
Again the only 2.3, the Hybrid will destroy the Kia.
Hell the 2.3 competes with the top lone Kia.
Ford stepping up their game. Bravo.
Seen two already on the road cops will be using them soon
Really? They’re a piece of shit
The quad tailpipes are blocked forcing the exhaust to exit out the bottom (via cutouts) of the tailpipes. Any explanation why ford did this?
This was to deal with the recall they had on the outgoing model inhaling its own exhaust. I'm pretty sure almost all of the trims point down now for this reason but I haven't seen one up close.
Looking at the Telluride, I see that Kia made it taller in the back and a wee bit wider than the Explorer. Ford needs to make the third row 'special', like in the Telluride, with USB ports, dual cupholders, etc. This should show up in the 2021 refresh. Otherwise, not bad. I'd take this up a rough road vs a Telluride, cuz it actually happens a more true 4WD system.
2:56 I'm sorry, did you just say both those screens are great?? They look ridiculous, especially the "half in/half out" portrait screen. 🤦🏻♂️
I agree. The screens (both) look ridiculous in what is supposed to be a refined vehicle!! The larger is just UGLY!! Complete deal breaker...
I think I would go for the bigger screan but you know the interior doesn't bother me
Every one is following Tesla. Look at volvos screens.
No. The Explorer didn't always have a blacked out A pillar. Nor a D pillar that was blacked out. 1st, 2nd, nor 3rd gen Explorers had blacked out A pillars.
The Explorer Sport nor Exploer Sport Trac had a blacked out C or D pillar
looks like that since Ford sold Land Rover and thought... Hey let's get inspired by the Discovery and Range Rover.
B and D have always been blacked out.
@@emed1977 I researched. And these vehicles have been in my family a few times.
that main screen it must be a pain to the eyes while night driving...I have Renault Clio IV and sometimes I turn off the main screen when at night. Those 4 seats aren't good for a 5 members family. You can't lower all seats in the back because u need one of them for the 3rd child at least.
The 2020 is a step in the right direction. I hope over time its off-road performance improves.
The horizontal iPad in the dash looks much better. When is the Base model coming out. I'd like to upgrade my 2016 Base for a 2020 Base.
New 2020 XLT is 2016 Base - no fog lights ,no turn signal on side mirrors ,no 7 seats ,no 10 inch screen,no chrome door hanldle ( plastic only)
We just got an xlt for a work truck at my company, pretty nice, remote start, nice infotainment system, leather seats, decent acceleration from the turbo 4 cylinder, if I could change one thing it would be the drive selector, the dial makes it clunky to do a quick 3 point turn, but hopefully that will change when I get more used to it.
You sir, talked me out of buying one. Thankyou
Rear wheel drive, 5000lbs towing, heated & cooled seats, heated steering wheel, acoustic laminated glass, and a decent sized gas tank? I’m intrigued. I mean I’m REALLY intrigued HERE.
Yea, for $58k you can get that!
But my 2019 Pilot Touring has just about all that and more for value price of $44,495. !!!
Like what?
@@ferreo1374 Well, it's tech isn't as easy to use as the Tellurides, and the Tellurides screen doesn't look like a stuck on iPad. The Telluride also has more thoughtful features, like a blind spot camera in the all-digital gauge cluster, and actual Nappa leather seats, Safe Exit Assist, Driver Talk, Ventilated REAR seats, and it's industry leading 10 year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. And it's 13k less than a comparable fully loaded Explorer Platinum.
@@evanlandry9503 If you need all that take the bus.
Good review matt Watson is getting competition
wow. very nice video!
This is my #1 choice car always a 1st pick :) 💚
Sehr guter Test, angenehmer Tester, klasse Auto, bildschön.👍👍👍
Best looking Ford in a Very long time!
I like the hybrid powertrain design. I can see that type of setup going in all their vehicles. Simple but effective.
How is the transmission on this vehicle?
I have heard it's clunky..
I am on my 3rd Explorer (1994, 1998, 2005) and have not found another suv with the tight turning radius of each of my Explorers. One thing that these videos fail to show is how small of an area the 2020 can turn in so I can consider my 4th Ford.
Our 2013 Explorer is easier to park than our 2008 Ford Fusion. The turning is very nice
explorer st awd-4wd?
Low key, this 2020 explorer has caught my eye.....
I'm Barbara Walters...and THIS....is 2020 💯😂
Can Ford Explorers Be Converted To Right Hand Drive
Why there is so little discussion/review about the Explorer 2020 base model?
Man that vertical iPad is such an afterthought. Epic fail
Paul M it’s actually very intentional 😂. Almost every automaker has something similar. Those “floating screens” are a new trend and they aren’t going anywhere.
Cody Warren I think he means it’s just not integrated as well
lol
Cody Warren other manufacturers integrate the “tablet” design more cohesively. This one looks like a tacked-on aftermarket design
The floating tablet puts it close to the plane of your eye so you glance down less, that being said while I understand the ergonomic factor I'm afraid I would probably break the "tablet" with a 2x4 6 weeks in.
Just purchased an ST and love it. Huge improvement over our 18.
I'm buying a used 2020. How is your car, did you have any problems?
How about the cargo space on the Hybrid version?
How's the road noise? Does it drive smooth?
What color blue is he test driving in this video? Blue or Blue Atlas?
Does it have the same crappy A/C blend doors as my expedition and Taurus?
Not the best looking, but probably the best driving SUV in the segment.
I would say it is absolutely the best looking in the segment!
@@TimLucasdesign Well, that's subjective. Personally, I prefer the look of the Telluride, but this definitely drives better with that rear-wheel drive platform. Kinda bulky to me, but it's still good looking.
2020 Ford Explorer (Platinum)❤🎉
I’m very excited about the new Explorer! Looks great and that 400 HP EcoBoost is going to be great. On a side note; if you’re going to complain about the interior quality and use the Telluride (which I love) as a comparison you should probably use a picture of an actual Telluride. 😂
Josh Gibb Tellurides are butt ugly. Just saying.
The Telluride is too new to compare a long established nameplate like the Explorer to. The Telluride could turn out to be a dud.
I sitll prefer touch buttons as in my 2013 ..they are easy to use and to clean as well
Wish you would go into the options, such as massaging seats. That's a benefit we are seeking and I have researched Fords until I am blue in the face. I'm about ready to buy a Audi or BMW because they don't hide these features, while Ford does. Why?
I have an explorer and how you explain the foot activated gate is not accurate.
Yours is the highest quality of all the video reviews I’ve seen today. However, calling out the lack of 3-across 3rd row is a bit disingenuous. Rather, call out the competition for claiming room for 3 in 3rd row, even though they are narrower than the Explorer.
Apparently you don’t know Alex on Auto
Its looking beautiful and large.
I have a 2019 Ford Explorer love it but ford your quality control needs to step up for what I paid for it door -analysts doesn’t match up with dash by a quarter inch door seal leaks paint on inside of bottom doors can see the primer under neath
Door-analysts?
MSRP?? Don't remember catching it. Price from low to high plz
What kind of review is this? He didn't give us any numbers. Hp? Tq? Towing? Price? I should of just went to TFL car.
Edmunds.
Is it 2020 already?
I wonder how it stacks up against the Palisade...
My engineer friend at gmc told me that he always assume that the rwd chassis provide a better handling. I actually will and need to test drive both to determine if that's true.
Very good thorough review. I just wish they would have let you review an xlt with a 2nd row bench.
Should've had a V6 option. A turbo 4 cyl will have to work way to hard lowering it's lifespan.
Great review.
Howmuch the price four 6 selender engine in ĺraq
Great content! Thanks.
What is the mileage on the EcoBoost v6?
Will this car be sold in the UK ?
It should have a foot longer for seat arrangement.
I love the front facia look. I know the PIU had carbon monoxide leak issue in the cabin a few years back did it happen with the civilian model? Nice looking over all.
Good review! I would probably go Telluride but this is a good truck except for the screen designs.
Tom Waznis Kia? Are people really considering a Kia over a Ford? Unbelievable times
@@suppaman12 yeah kia is way better now a days, todays ford isnt 1903
daban yaseen you think a Kia motor is superior to a ford motor? You do deserve to buy a Kia. Enjoy it!!!
@moreno12 I’ve owned vehicles from both brands. Have you? Of course not. Kia is absolutely worthy of consideration, the Telluride is an incredible entry in this segment.
Matt Rogers it’s a Kia... the motor is built by Kia. I don’t think you follow
Hi, anyone know if if there are air con vents in the third row?
Yes. See 5:10
WoW it looks like a Range Rover especially the front end !
Bring back the Eddie Bauer :):)
That's a good idea
yes! I had one of those. two toned maroon/tan
What about the left foot in the driver side is still narrow
Bring back the LOW RANGE!
ford clearly dosn't want you to go off road with it. maybe the Bronco will be better?
Where did they film this?
Go to 0:13 of the video
Great masculine stance on the exterior, Dashboard has a cheap look to it which is a shame considering what Ford has achieved in the power-train options available.
Sir, how do you actually know what people will put in their car for fuel? So, your concern about what octane I might not use is why you failed to provide "hard numbers?" Why no front view of the instrument cluster? Very interesting review.
for 60k no cooling seats, what? i would prefer Palisade and 10k less
It has cooled seats and if you get the Premium tech package, it includes multicontour seats with active motion.
It’s a very nice car. If I got this, I’d HAVE to name it Forda the Explorer
Now im having a hardtime choosing subaru ascent or ford explorer just base trim buyer hmm
Explorer
If you need AWD go with the Subaru as it's standard equipment. If you don't, go with the Explorer, it's better in every conceivable way.
Excited for this Explorer to be available in Belgium, now I only need 80k euro :'D
are the 2.3 or 3.0 2nd gen EcoBoost?
They are all 2nd gen EcoBoost(The 3.0EcoBoost is just a updated smaller 3.5EcoBoost and the 2.3 liter is a 2006-2009 Ford Fusion resourced engine that has been updated and refined+Turbo)
I love the Platinum..
Thanks for showing so much Platinum trim. Not sure about the dash and two-tone seats though.
