I hate when people compare this to the SRT just because it's the top trim Ford is offering for the explorer in terms of performance. In the price point, it matches more with the Durango R/T and power numbers wise, pretty similar as well. Only key difference is that the Durango R/T in my opinion has more configurable options whereas the Explorer ST really only comes in 1 of 2 configurations.
The Explorer ST is MUCH cheaper than a Durango SRT. Used or New. Not a "few thousand dollars more". Base prices are 10K different. Please be more precise, Matt. And, though, then there is the gas mileage, and handling. Though it requires a $500 investment on the ST, with a tune it easily walks the SRT. However the SRT sounds awesome and the towing ability is in a class of its own.
Nice review. I know the ST and Platinum editions are $60,000 but I still think you get a lot for your money. Comparable Mercedes is about $75,000. I think the value and fun are evidenced by Matt's smiles each time he steps on the gas and hears the engine roar.

Much like a Mustang, people are looking at performance more than premium materials. If you need the premium materials, you can choose the Platinum model.
Matt, I always enjoy your videos... and you are smart to save the pricing info until near the end, because if you led off with $60k+ for this thing, I would have stopped playing it immediately. In what world is this vehicle - with that low-rent hard plastic interior and suuuuper laggggggy infotainment - worth $60k?!?! Insane. That's a $35k vehicle at best... and that's what it will be worth a year (or less) after the handful of suckers buy it. Wow, Ford.
Just purchased one in blue for my wife and yeah the engine and trans are fantastic match it rips for a SUV drives great and has the power to pass and merge onto the highway
Matt is this a pre production vehicle? My wife and I test drove one last week and were pretty impressed with the responsive of the infotainment and don't recall laggy gauges either. Loved the Explorer ST overall and might get one at some point when they are going for 10k off sticker. Great videos as usual Matt! Side note. Almost bought a Bullitt the same day and might go get it this weekend with the killer deals going on them. Thanks!
A loaded to loaded Durango srt vs ST is roughly 20k difference. Now don’t get me wrong I love srt stuff but it’s in a whole different price bracket. Now the r/t is a direct competitor price wise. Base st price is higher but most nicely trimmed RT’s with the same same equipment as the base ST are right in line.

I have a 2021 Explorer ST and my only complaint is it’s stiff ride. I feel every bump. I realize when you get a “sport” or “performance” package you can expect a stiffer ride, but this one is too stiff. Bumpy ride. Kinda surprised you didn’t feel that Matt.

I’m amazed at the low quality materials inside, and also the slow infotainment ... will you be reviewing the base 2.3 turbo engine models? Might be a better value given the price.
My I-Pace is that laggy if not worse. By far the most frustrating thing about the car. Jag really shit the bed on infotainment and it really ruins an otherwise amazing car. I'm glad you pointed this out on the Explorer because after the I-Pace I've vowed to never get another car with slow/laggy infotainment.
I myself own a 23' Explorer ST Fully optioned out at 67k and yeah quality is not good but also isn't the worst, not to mention let's not forget that this , at the end of the day is a ford and are paying for the performance.... is not a Benz, Bmw, Audi or a Cadillac etc. Mind you their interiors also don't be all that great for the "price" or "Luxury" either.
Yes Matt. Great review showing why Ford designs good powertrains and then "lags" at everything else. To have such a laggy interfaces in a $60K vehicle is a sad state of the design flaws that somehow pass right past the executives' noses. Ford's quality is also middling based on the overall brand surveys at Consumer Reports. I read the transmission on this vehicle hunts too outside of Sport Mode, and is essentially not a performance vehicle, but a standard vehicle with performance added (read the R&T review). Sad. Maybe in a refresh it will get better, as usual this is another testimony on why to avoid the first year of a model transition.
The front end is gorgeous but then you see the back, and then you see the inside...it’s like they had different designers for different parts, and they never communicated.
golfbuddy1969 the front end of the 2018 and 2019 looks better with the wrap around leds imho. The 2020 I think went backwards in front end design. Coming from someone that owns a 2018 sport.
German cars have great attention to detail. American cars are great but always leave those room for improvements. Are the Engineers less well paid? My take is American auto manufacturers don't really have sufficient competitors to keep them at the TOP of their game. More startups will be welcome to change all that
Constantine Joseph - unfortunately this attention to detail has never shown for me in reliability - what good is a “quality” interior when its subpar in the bits that u can’t see - german car manufacturers are following shareholder value just as much as American car manufacturers - they are just better at fooling the consumers....
I agree with you iam down to choosing between the 2019 summit v8 I like the luxury and sport or the grand Cherokee srt not much luxury but def have the sport the explorer has ben kicked off the list. I notice there isn't much difference in the summit and srt as far as mpg Read more
Matt you lost me brother... at 17:56 you said you didn’t think they have adjustable suspension..... isn’t your “job” to know? That’s why I’m watching a review. Guess I’ll go elsewhere......
Man, Matt did not enjoy his time in this vehicle at all. Looked unhappy and like he wanted to get out ASAP the whole time. That's OK, not every car is for everyone. That said, apparently Ford heard the comments about the interior, because the 2021 ST is getting high gloss upgrades, presumably to replace the hard plastic Matt mentioned. FWIW, just about every other reviewer said the hard plastic was on par for the vehicle class. I think you have to bear in mind that the development money most likely wen to the powertrain, redesign, and cabin tech. One thing I do think is missing is an adjustable suspension. But Matt was the only major reviewer that complained about that. Bottom line: if you're sedan or coupe guy get Kia Stinger (much quicker all around for less money + better mileage) or a Mustang (same brand, much quicker). But if you want a poor man's X5/Q7/Whatever Mercedes is calling their midsize SUV now, this is the ticket for you. This is now my #2 preference car, behind the Stinger (GT2). I drive pretty aggressively but also live in the snow belt, and the Stinger's AWD option comes in handy there.
Damn, that plastic is so scuffed up in all its panels and edges already, imagine in five years. Irritatingly laggy software. Great review and pointed out some major flaws while acknowledging the elements that are positive. Engine is impressive but dependability is questionable and crap, $60k is ridiculous!
I think this SUV looks great on the outside, but that interior... I hate the integration of that tablet just glued on the dash, looks absolutely terrible in my opinion.
Great review. Looking for a replacement for an aging Jeep Grand Cherokee, but I have a hard time justifying the purchase, and letting go. I still love my Jeep.
Jay Tookie I wouldn’t be surprised if ford had a stake holding in the LandRover company or shared engineers like they did/ maybe still do with Aston Martin.
I've personally never seen anyone use the third row seating myself. That screen looks tacted on given this price range. That's the engine they should of put in the Mustang instead of the 2.3.
Not a Fan of the Cheap looking Tablet that looks out of place also the Maytag inspired Rotary Shifter I’m not a fan of and the layout of the cluster cheap looking
Man that is a lot of hard plastic and it has a rental car looking interior. Nothing special but the performance. Honestly for an SUV that I would use for family trips and a good amount of highway time, I would want to be surrounded by nice, soft touch materials, at least the materials I would touch on a day to day basis. These surfaces are all hard, cheap plastic. I looked at one at the dealer and I was underwhelmed. I guess if you are used to cheap plastic interiors then you know no different but it was a pass for me. I could not rationalize the price tag honestly. For this kind of car, performance is not enough.
That “IPad” that sticks out of the center dash is absolutely gross...I hate that look on any car...it should be built-in. To save $$ and have high performance, I’d like to buy a late model used Durango R/T and add a Whipple Supercharger kit and an aftermarket exhaust...This will be far cheaper than Durango SRT, Ford Raptor, and this marginal Ford...late model Durango R/Ts are around 30k; Whipple Supercharger and exhaust system around 9k...so you’re under $40,000 with very strong performance and great V-8 sound.
Ford still putting out 2000s Korean cars interiors while charging German car pricing. Should take a page from current Kia/Hyundai interiors. The irony.
This thing is just a fast bank vault. Walking doesnt mean a thing when the ST were all stellar handling and sport tuning. Not rolling in an automatic two ton walk in closet with a bomb under the hood.
Do you have a learning disability? Seriously, are you aware of the incredible engineering involved in getting a 5000 pound SUV to accelerate , corner, and stop as well as the new 2020 ST Explorer does ?
Those taillights are hideous. It doesn't look that bad because of the red paint, but any other color they look atrocious. This is an ST, a sport model, but it has seats equivalent to an Oldsmobile, why not have adjustable bolstering? For a 60,000 SUV, this is ridiculously overpriced.
the touchscreen display Ford should have put it horizontal not vertical it looks like a tablet just sitting there waiting to fall off 3rd row seating sets way too low on the floor they should have made it like theater type seating so it's more higher off of the floor
This thing is an abomination. Ford just had to slap the ST badge on something since Americans don't want to buy small cars, rather than let the ST's die a hero's death here.
The fly in the ointment for the Explorer ST is its MSRP. Moderately optioned it tops $60,000. Ten thousand dollars or more than the top trim levels of its rivals! Unlike most of its rivals the Explorer does offer RWD (or RWD biased AWD) but that architecture is supposed to offer superior towing capacity. And on that measure the 5600 lb rating is a significant disappointment, only 600 lbs more than several competitive vehicles. Furthermore, the MSRP of a comparably optioned Lincoln Aviator (Reserve) with the same engine and drive train is only about $5000 more than the ST with a MUCH more premium look and feel. And to add insult to injury, the Aviator has a 6700 lb tow rating. The difference? The Aviator comes with a Class IV hitch compared to the Explorer's Class III. Ford will sell boatloads of Explorers thanks in large part to the huge proportion of their sales that go to public agency fleets. But not only is the Explorer MUCH more expensive than its mainstream rivals, it's outclassed by its Lincoln sibling for only slightly more money.

Not too sure what was wrong with the lag here, but mine has no lag switching modes
I’m seeing them for 50k in my area. Still steep.
RudyValo they have like 2 grand in rebates maybe 56k
Image-1.jpg
They are going for 10-11k off msrp
You can find this SUV in the upper 40s, loaded with all the good stuff. John is upset bc his Kia is in the shop again.....
I get having USB charging ports but why a USB-C port?
Because it's superior in every way...
You must have an iPhone....
Look it up
With that deep well in the cargo area, Ford should have put a spare tire in there.
great video I was looking at this or the grand Cherokee summit v8 or the srt but for $60,000 I dont think so
German cars have great attention to detail.
Review: 2020 Ford Explorer ST
I will wait for like a year or 2 and get it used for around 35k
The price is pushing $60K and Ford couldn't put race pedals in that SUV?
I agree with you iam down to choosing between the 2019 summit v8 I like the luxury and sport or the grand Cherokee srt not much luxury but def have the sport the explorer has ben kicked off the list. I notice there isn't much difference in the summit and srt as far as mpg

U tricked me
It’s too bad. I had high hopes with the change to a RWD platform. But in this category, the competition is too stiff to blow it in the interior.
How many times do you say "here" here?
why o why did they stand that screen up
Nice vehicle, But heard the quad Exhaust is fake and exhaust note is synthesized thru speakers..Come on Ford!! Put the Bong down!!
Is because the engine and the computer need time to change the modes that the truck have!
I think this SUV looks great on the outside, but that interior... I hate the integration of that tablet just glued on the dash, looks absolutely terrible in my opinion.
Looks like Ford did this one on the budget and they want 60K for it?😀😛👎...I'll take the Durango.
But with a black one, people will drive safer around u
At 60k might as well get the Lincoln aviator
SRT a few K more? Dude the SRT runs about 86 K and looks 15 yrs old with shit tech
Great review. Looking for a replacement for an aging Jeep Grand Cherokee, but I have a hard time justifying the purchase, and letting go. I still love my Jeep.
Is it me or is every SUV looking like a range rover these days??
Jay Tookie
I wouldn’t be surprised if ford had a stake holding in the LandRover company or shared engineers like they did/ maybe still do with Aston Martin.
@@alexmeisner7245 well that would make a lot of since.
I think it's jus u
13.7 Avg Mpg Haha for a 400 Horse Motor really not all that great. The Jeep Trackhawk gets about the same MPG with 707 HP.
I saw one in person and i am not really into it. After seeing the price it’s a hell no.
The lights r more ugly then the previous versions
No worries, just get another Hyundai.....
I've personally never seen anyone use the third row seating myself. That screen looks tacted on given this price range. That's the engine they should of put in the Mustang instead of the 2.3.
You piss and moan more than a dumb broad.....
Not a Fan of the Cheap looking Tablet that looks out of place also the Maytag inspired Rotary Shifter I’m not a fan of and the layout of the cluster cheap looking
I love those Bang & Olufsen Audio Systems that Ford is now implementing in their vehicles! Great Sound
@@KeithSchwerin your what?
The irony.
Let me know when you find a brand new twin turbo car under 50k. Lmfao. “Irony”
Carlos Hernandez but Kia's and Hyundai's r not reliable
This vehicle is badass
dodge srt is way more than couple thousand more !!
They are already 10-11k off Msrp
This thing looks like a fire engine service vehicle.
I see you Matt, listening to EDM!
Good video.. trash car.. As a Focus ST owner... they should let the ST badge die or actually bring back the real STs
Joseph Brown but this will walk your focus st honestly in its way more useful
THat it may, but the fun factor isnt there. My focus makes 350... power to weight, they MAY be even
This thing is just a fast bank vault. Walking doesnt mean a thing when the ST were all stellar handling and sport tuning. Not rolling in an automatic two ton walk in closet with a bomb under the hood.
this.. they took the fun away
It’s not a tailgate on an suv. It’s a hatch. A tailgate is on a pickup
Buy yourself another Hyundai then....
colderbeer what does Hyundai have to do with me calling it a hatch?
@@austinp1124 Veloster maybe.
Good review of an unimpressive car.
Yeah 3-5k = about 5-6 mods gets you 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds with everything else stock. Not impressive at all, im sure you're ram is much faster
Lets see how it does shall ee
the touchscreen display Ford should have put it horizontal not vertical it looks like a tablet just sitting there waiting to fall off
3rd row seating sets way too low on the floor they should have made it like theater type seating so it's more higher off of the floor
This thing is an abomination.
Ford just had to slap the ST badge on something since Americans don't want to buy small cars, rather than let the ST's die a hero's death here.
A fast SUV is not the ST way 😒
Bro did you start lifting?
Well, maybe he realized he's getting old and needs to exercise more for a better body
Ford is more reliable then Lincoln
@@BobThe9534 And what's the evidence for that? In this case, the same drive train, the same platform, etc. in the Explorer and the Aviator.
Looks like a lot of cost cutting to me!
Why do you keep talking about Kia and Hyundai Ford motor engines are way better than Hyundai and Kia Ford engine lineup 2.7 3.5 L 7.3 6.2 6.7 2.3 2.0. 5.0 suck on that KIA and Hyundai
