  • Dirty Deborah Harry explains how to identify forward edges on roller skates and goes into detail about how to execute and practice these edges. Goal here is to help skaters understand that proper edging will help in the execution of all skating skills beyond forward gliding.

I spent most of my day watching all your videos today. I am 56, got my old skates out, and went out to the garage to practice. I was so excited to find your videos because I've often thought of skating again but it's been so long (since I was in my early 20's) and here where I live on the East Coast (Mass) I can't find anyplace where you can get a lesson or even just skate with adults. It seems no one over 16 roller skates around here - I always loved it, never had a lesson per say, and now that I have found you I am so motivated to learn all these techniques I can't wait until tomorrow to practice some more! Thank you so much and can't wait for your next video!!!

Hey there, same here...bringing back the '70s. I'm fortunate enough to have a rink near me. Hopefully my new skates will be here Friday night. I take our foster kiddo on Friday nights for all-skate, and working up to the Saturday night adults only skate. I was shocked at how much my body forgot after 30 years and 50 pounds. But also shocked how it is coming back, watching these videos. Best of luck to you. Maybe somehow you can build interest among friends and family to go with you and have fun.

@@Dirtydeborahharry I was doing great for 4 days then I was working on backwards skating, my skate wheel got stuck somehow and I fell backwards, spraining my wrist. Luckily I had a helmet on (I am actually a horseback rider - I ride and teach Dressage) but no other protective gear. My friend and I took our horses up to New York and, the first day there, I dislocated my baby toe. Again, luckily, I was able to get my riding boot on and continued my riding but need to let it heal before getting back to the skating because the skate hurts too much! I have been very accident prone the last couple months (had a car accident too - no one hurt) but I can't wait to get back to it!!! I need to clean my skates and buy wrist guards and pads first.

    I'm no professional but
I love showing people that just started skating little things like this and then watch them improve drastically in just a couple hours. I got one girl to go from being terrified of going backwards to actually turning (sloppy but functional) and going backwards. The next week we smoothed her turn.. she fell several times but kept trying..
At the end of the session I was taking off my skates and she came off the floor and hugged me with tears in her eyes..
I think that is what kept her skating. That is so awesome to me.
I am teaching myself the 2 step.. 2 months ago I couldn't back step my left foot.. Now I am working on flowing it in the turn.. (right side is great, left... Not yet.. good footin.. 😏)
Oh and I'm doing it on wide wheeled speed skates so there have been some clearance issues.. (read: crashing..).. to overcome. Still protecting my knee from the high speed crash a few weeks ago.. I might have cracked the knee cap.. there is a noticeable groove in it..
Anyway, Thanks! Have fun. Looking good.

Me, wifey, her sister and her husband decided yesterday that we're gonna get back into skating like we use to - which has been over 20yrs ago now. So with me being one of the weaker skaters, I decided to run to UA-cam for some help. I came across some of your videos, and I have to say, they are so well detailed, precise & clear. The only thing that would be better than watching your videos is having you here in ATL so you could give me & wifey some lessons. Somehow you are able to break down every move into manageable steps, and that's important. Keep up the good work!

I definitely aim to work on my weaker side so that I'm a more balanced skater. I'm just returning to skating after not skating since I was like 13! And I remember that I favored one side over the other but there are things you can't do if you don't work the edges on both sides. Thanks, Deb for reminding us that it's all possible with enough practice.

Most helpful video yet, Deb!! I needed drills to develop my edges and you educated me on the importance of edges and the prerequisite skill of single leg stance on skate. I have been relying on my R skate to weight bear and have a lot more success with counter clockwise transisitions compared to my off balance, light weight on L skate and weak clockwise transitions. Your passion and energy of skating and education is admirable. Thank you for your effort and time.

Thank you for all your videos! I am a beginner, and the first few times, I practiced in my apartment on a wood floor (there is enough room). I learned scissors forward and backward, scissors with one foot at a time, and even the cha-cha steps backward from one of your videos, and I felt pretty good about my progress. Yesterday, for the first time, I went to a rink.. and well, it was so much harder! The wood floor was not nearly as smooth as my hardwood floor, and except for practicing scissors a few times, I was mostly worried about not falling when roller skating forward. The floor in the videos looks so much smoother. Will keep practicing at home, and practice the most basics at the rink at least until I feel comfortable.

When you change venues, your brain needs to adjust. Your brain, by default, will go into emergency mode to protect you. I strongly urge you to continue to go to the rink and you will get used to that floor in no time.

Thank you DDH!!! I continually have the ‘falling backward’ momentum in the up up up and standing position. Pointing toes together doesn’t help. I feel like a snowboarder that has to sit down all the time! I have Sure Grip derby skates by default and I love them while waiting for my Boardwalk size to come in. I’ve skated many years off and on and haven’t experienced this to this degree. If I bend over/lean way forward I’m ok...I’m not understanding why I can’t be in an ‘up’ position without doing the ‘comic drop’. My tail bone has had it! 😂 I appreciate all and any tips...REALLY appreciate your channel and always recommend!!!! ☮️💖🧩

Let's try really focusing on keeping your weight on the ball of your feet and feeling the outside of your boot with every stride. Put pressure down with your arms to the side of every stride. You must focus on skating is movement of the body side to side and NEVER forward backward.

How do your skates fit? Do you have wide feet or a high arch? I’ve got wide feet and I notice that crampy feeling most when I wear shoes/skates that are too narrow or that are too tight across the arch. There are a few ways to lace skates to help deal with that, you should find them pretty easily via a Google search.

I feel I may be too far center on the skate to turn if that makes sense. I can do it if I sit in the back foot and lift the front skate. I know that isn’t correct.

Oh! I have a video idea! I haven't gotten started yet and love all types of roller skating, rink, speed, slalom, the whole shebang. I don't see people talking about figure skating much and I was wondering do you have any opinions or takes on it? Maybe what it involves or how it compares to other kinds of skating? I think I'd like to do it some day but it'd be good to know what basics to get good at first
Or maybe just a video on what all the different types of roller skating are?
If this isn't your territory that's totally okay! I just wanted to ask just in case cos I love your videos and way of explaining things. Hope you're having a great weekend ✨

Everything I teach here is from a figure skating perspective. Figure skating is classical training and is the foundation for all other types.

Could you please add “markers” in your vids at each drill? I want to bring these vids with me to the rink and it would be handy to have a quick way to access the drills. Love your vids, thanks so much for sharing.

I’ve only been skating for about 8 months and I can’t get transitions and scrossovers. I can skate backwards through. I think I need to get stronger with my edges. Are my large 65mm outdoor wheels a hinderance or should they work just fine? I’m mostly skating on concrete and basketball courts.

I think when we are skating backwards, then unknowingly ,we are actually accessing our inner edges.

Hey Deborah! Love these videos. Your instructions are so clear and precise! Real easy to follow and understand. Thank you so much. 3 quick questions. What size wheels do you use/ recommend to do this kind of skating? i.e. Height, width and durometer. Is there a way to find out the durometer of my existing skate wheels? And finally, What kind of plates produce the best control and results? i.e. Nylon, Aluminium etc. Thanks so much for all you do!

My skate set-up for this video is listed in the description. What wheels are you using?

      @@Dirtydeborahharry Hey Deborah!
Thanks for your quick reply. I have been skating since I was 6 and I am now 58. I have a pair of Chicago skates from 1979 with steel plates. New trucks in mid-90's. I have Zinger wheels from the 80's that are 55mm high by
38 wide. Not sure of the durometer. I live in Connecticut where there are only 3 rinks in the entire state! ( Love the set up of your rink by the way. Very warm friendly, good signage and lighting.) Both rinks where I skate have wood in good condition. Not sure about the applied surface or stickiness. My wheels feel too grippy under my feet and they feel a bit wide. They are indoor wheels but feel somewhat soft. Just not sure If I have the right hardness or it they are too wide for artistic skating.

Hi Debbie! How do you feel about loose trucks? Is a must or really not necessary? loooove your videos ;)

    • @Dirtydeborahharry
      @Dirtydeborahharry  5 років тому +1

I will do a video on the relationship between the "action" of your trucks and the cushions on your skates. Hopefully this video will help answer this question to a greater degree. Short answer … they need to be loose enough for you to be able to "lean onto your edges" but to also maintain stability. If you feel unstable, they may be too loose.
