And could we just emphasise, especially for newer skaters: pads and helmet! *When* (not if) people fall, protective gear can be the difference between standing right up, or leaving a blood trail and going to hospital. (Experienced skaters know their own skills and risk level, do what you want. But newbies *are* *going* *to* *fall* *over*)

I thought since I skated as a kid in a rink it wouldn’t take me very long!! Boy was I wrong but these videos have helped me with my progress over this past year and this one is so educational! As long as there aren't TOO many cracks when starting out. I'm actually teaching my 16 year old right now outdoors. Mainly in the street, so she's getting really good at going straight, but it's time to start working on her turning. She would get to a turn at the rink before they all shut down, of course, and revert back to bubbles/scissors and lose pretty much all of her momentum. Trying to get her to lean into the turns and pick her feet up.
We've got a lead on a MUCH smoother surface, so once it stops snowing here, we plan on heading up to the local elementary school parking lot. They have, what they call, a "loop". Basically it's an area for dropping off the kids that has a little, grassy, "island" in the center that the buses and cars circle around so it's the perfect area to simulate a rink situation. :)

Planet roller skate has a few videos that talk about hill bombing/skating downhill. I’ve tested it on my driveway (small scale) and on an underground car park. I went for the version where you go backward and you use a staggered stance using your toestop of the skate that’s the furthest downhill to control your rate of descent. I found it really easy but haven’t gotten the confidence up yet to go forward downhill yet!

Thank you for this! Our town doesn't have a rink nearby, so outdoors is our only choice. I never knew about the split stance--what a great option. I haven't skated in about 40 years and I appreciate the advice to practice 10 minutes a day. I got all the safety gear, too, b/c I don't want to chance any broken bones if I can help it. Wow! I’ve watched countless skating videos over the last week preparing for the arrival of my first pair of quad skates and you are by far, the best instructor. None of the outdoor skating videos I watched ever went over different foot positions or skating techniques based on the terrain. Or how you might combine those different techniques. Most tell you to go around debris. It’s so much more clear to me now, where I need to start in my outdoor skating. I like the idea of picking a convenient and maybe quiet location devoid of a lot of traffic, to practice until more confident in your skills. You are ridiculously funny too. I was cracking up through this video. 🤣

Hi! Love your instructional videos! I'm fabulously 50 this year!!! 👏🤩 For some reason I have this desire to want to skate outdoors. Am I too old to be doing this? I skated at 13 and wasn't good then. I had my heart set on trying out for Roller Derby in my 30's, however, I allowed myself to be talked out of it. ☹ I'm excited and nervous. I don't even know what type of skates and wheels to get if I do decide to do this. I'm open to any advice! Love and Blessings to all! 💖🤘🤗

Thank you for this video! I had watched another one of your videos about skating outdoors but feel this one was much more helpful in seeing how you position your feet and how your back leg knee supports the front when going over cracks/debris. I've been skating outdoors at a school where the pavement is pretty smooth, so i'll have really practice this the coming week.

Thank you so much! I just got my skates 3 days ago and I was having a really hard time skating on the side walk because of all the cracks on the ground. Tried putting my weight on my back foot and I was able to go right over the bumps!

I've been working on my split stance and been having fun going over larger bumps and cracks but I think my weight is still mostly in my front foot. I tried to move the weight to the back and it doesn't feel as stable. I'm about 50/50 weight distribution so I can still get over pretty big cracks but I can't lift my front trucks. Working on it :)

I just bought an outdoor pair of skates (Rock GT50 with boardwalk wheels) and I'm really excited. First day out today and I was nervous. I have a few trails and side roads that are pretty smooth though so it was incredibly fun to actually go straight for more than a few seconds before having to turn the same direction over and over. Some of your tips were very helpful. It came super naturally. So if anyone out there is comfortable in the rink and can skate on 1 foot, you should be just fine outside with the proper setup. I found skating in the roads easier. I do miss the comfort of doing tricks while rink skating however. I pulled a few today, but I need a helmet and some pads before I do more. Just need to find where to buy some good ones

Oh jeez...WIND!!!!! Took my daughter to the tennis courts a week or so ago. Checked the weather. "Gusts of up to 27 MPH possible". Okay, no big deal. Me, stupidly thinking, "Maybe if we can get the right angle, it'll help us a little!" Got out there. Was skating normally...and almost fell several times.
Going fast around the courts, a gust would come up and COMPLETELY stop us! Going the other way, of course, we'd gain even more speed. It was...interesting.
Got home, listened to the news. 27 MPH my ass! Found out those gusts actually got up to 55 MPH!!! No wonder we'd occasionally come to a dead stop! It was fun, but we were a little shaky when those gusts hit and we were going the "wrong" way. LOL Actually hoping to do it again....if it ever decides to stop snowing here. 3 days, off and on, been too wet to get outside. :( Trying to clean out the dining room even more, but it's still such a tiny area...of course I much prefer being free outdoors. :)

Im trying to get on some skates to get back in shape and lose some weight! I have neglected my yoga practice a while but am normally very good with balance. Im shorter with very thick thighs so the crossover position is not natural to me, when i go to do it I immmediately panic because it feels like i dont have control and im going to fall, or hurt my ankles, so I have some questions for you:
Are there any modifications you might suggest?
How can I get more comfortable with the crossover?
    Thank you

    • @Dirtydeborahharry
      @Dirtydeborahharry  4 роки тому +1

Okay first up ... can you balance on one foot? That is key. Pick the foot you can balance on and really work on holding your knee pressed over your baby toe. Now lean into it. As soon as you think you may fall, cross over. Do this off skates every day and then watch my crossover videos and try it on skates.

Lawd help me. I wore the wrong socks today and my feet are paying the price. My Moxi 🌈 gliders are as stiff as 2 x 4s and have zero support inside. I am definitely going to have to invest in some softer, more pliable skates for people with flat feet! I still suck but I've only been out twice and haven't fallen...yet. There is no way on this earth that I'm going to a rink looking this crazy. All I want is to be able to hop off a curb and go down a skate ramp one time in my life. Is that too much to ask!!?? LoL

I’ve been using my older sisters massive roller skates and I’ve managed to do so much such as lift my right foot upwards and roll forward aimlessly, and I wish I can do this outside but I’m wearing Chicago skates and they are very bad for outdoors and extreme like skating so oh well. Turns out learning things inside is a lot more better then outside.
