      46 here. My issue is the number of parents who've come up to me and always say "You look like you're having so much fun out there...but I could never do it!" UGH! :( Get some skates and DO IT...you can't learn by sitting on the sidelines watching your kid! I've not skated for 15 years...growing up in the midwest, this was our only winter entertainment that didn't come with frost bite! Fast forward to now, living in Arizona, I've been inspired by you to pick up a pair of skates again. The wife has been asking what I want for my birthday this year, so I sent her a link to some new skates. I just wanted to say thank you for all of your videos, I've always questioned how to do some of the more intricate movements that you'd see the pro's doing and you make it look effortless and offer all the information/knowledge for free with the most amazing attitude and love for the sport! I could and have spent hours watching your videos and I learn something new each and every time! Thanks for all you do!!!

    The best skating instructor on UA-cam. I guess, this lady is an excellent ice skater, maybe even her first discipline. I am a seasoned ice skater but some of techniques are still hard for me, including Mohawk. Thank you very much. I started thinking about rollers, not yet decided which type to try, blades or quads. Quads look more fun and esthetically pleasing, and much closer to ice skates than blades.

    As a new skater in her (late) 50’s, I thought that maybe I just couldn’t do them (skating since late October). I was having some (minimal) success but still quite uncomfortable and nervous until I watched this tutorial today, the first day of 2021. I had a go while watching your video and it almost instantly clicked, I CAN DO THEM AND DO THEM EASILY!!!

    Dirty, ice skater here with a pandemic thirst for skating. Roller skating is it - two weeks ago I bought my first pair of outdoor roller skates. After 3 days I found my edges by doing figure eights in my driveway in a space that is maybe 10 x 10. Little tiny steps is all it took for me to feel and discover those wonderful edge. It’s almost effortless now, skates are broken in and I can roller skate in style - just love it. Can’t believe how much fun this is. Thank you so much for posting the videos of outdoor skating - definitely different techniques required - “down with the butt and up with the gut” to get over those rough patches. This technique looks so similar to telemarking on cross country skis. It’s all the same, skiing down hill or cross country, ice skating, running and yes even walking., We are humans with two legs and naturally we go side to side and with skates you get that rhythm going with some plié and it’s skating from within - pure selfless expression. Thank you Dirty, for showing us the way.

    Hi Deb! I don't know how often you review these comments but I love watching your techniques. I've watched more recent ones and left a comment on one you responded to. I'm the one who fell last November and hurt myself pretty bad. I've healed now and back to skating. I've passed your skills on to others, especially children. It's been fun. My legs are strengthening in spite of a loss of cartilage in my right knee. The more I skate the less my knee hurts. But you are right about practicing. One must practice, practice, practice. I have a garage to practice in good weather days. Summer days are too hot. Today was 103 degrees making it too hot in the garage. Anyway, hope you find time to comment. I did sign up on Instagram but I don't know how to use it. Never was much for social media.

    hooray, I finally got front-to-back transitions TONIGHT!!! THIS video got me 1/2 way there last week practicing on a circle at the rink in the middle, but I couldn't quite get it all the way- I kept coming to a T-stop somehow- but the weight transfers and the edges on the circle really helped prepare. Tonight I tried rolling back and forth in front of my kitchen bar, opening my shoulder towards the bar, and somehow that physical barrier made my brain click that it was the bar-side leg I needed to pick up instead of the other one. all this time I've been thinking I was picking up the correct first foot, but I wasn't! (DOH!) so it clicked, and I was able to roll through about 50 transitions back and forth immediately. Deb, you ROCK! Thank you for teaching the internet how to skate. you just opened up my world of outdoor adventure skating- now I can finally progress to the turnaround toe-stop, so I can use those toestop-hill descents I've been practicing in real life situations and leave the safety of the trails to start going out in (quiet) neighborhoods. Thank you!

When a person can perform a maneuver a certain way for decades, making do with the slight discomfort of it, only to watch one of your videos and see you do it a little differently, and float like a feather while you're doing...yes...a master. I am an old dog that learned a new trick. Thank you!
    And damn, you're fine.

    During this pandemic, I have been trying to find new ways to stay active. I bought a pair of skates this month and I have practicing EVERYDAY. Its fun and such a stress reliever. I can't wait to become as EXCELLENT AS YOU ARE. I'm in my beginning stage, but I feel it won't be long until I am fully comfortable on wheels. I am middle aged and have a youthful soul. Thanks for your video, I am watching one every day.

    Dear Dirty, I feel like we're good friends. I'm a young mom with 2 kids under 4 and just started skating less than 30 days ago. I've gone through about half of your video content and rewatched some videos at least 20-30 times. The joy I feel skating took me completely by surprise and is the only thing I've felt this passionately about that's just for me for a long time. I wish so badly I learned earlier...But like you said here, it's never too late. This particular video spoke to me especially your convictions about the foundations of skating. There is so much tempting fun things I see on social media that I'm desperate to learn but I'm determined to get the basics down. The videos I watch most often on repeat of yours are those talking about edges, cruising, stopping, and basic movements as well as practicing almost every night in my tiny backyard. Want to thank you and how much your videos have helped and inspired me. Looking fwd to taking an in-person class with you one day. xo

Now I just want to skate again. Rinks are a little scary, but I am going to skate around my driveway soon! If it goes well, I’ll hit some flat park trails.

    Thank you so much for doing this video, breaking the Mohawk turn down. When I tell you. I have been watching tons of jam skate videos, with my hand covering all the bodies, only exposing the skates, to try n get this technic. And still could not. The movements were just to smooth n quick. I was an avid skater as a child. At 47, I’m returning to my tranquility. My confidence in staking is slowly returning. BUT this one movement is truly my hang up. Like you said that inner skater. My song comes on. I’m jamming. I feel the spirit to turn n BAM. I freeze. Nothing. Nada. So thank you very much. I will be PRACTICING PRACTICING PRACTICING this tutorial/technic.

    I have been taking my small children to skating classes and after months I decided I give it a go and try the beginner class. I practiced for literally 6 days for a couple hours through a few of your videos, starting with the 180 turns and in class today , I passed testing and got moved up to intermediate!! I shared the way you break things down and one of the students said, you should be the teacher! Haha far from it! If they only knew I've been skating for 6 days!! but I must say its been a fire inside of me (being a single mom you know you gotta put things aside) to skate so I've got courage to learn through the roof boiling inside me! But here I am needing your explanation on this since the teacher had us try for intermediate but didn't break it down as Dirty does. I love the teacher though and from an Orange County born and raised I wished I took classes there in FV, but I'm in Colorado now and I'm getting the best of both worlds with you Dirty since I've been feeling super nostalgic and homesick but you make it feel just like home!

    I’m so glad I watched this video to the end! What a heartwarming message to end on. I’m practicing my mohawks now but because I’m so tall (6 feet to be precise), I feel like I naturally go so fast. But your videos are really helping me to overcome that and find my proper form and continue to practice. So Thanks for the encouragement, Debbie!

  • @Loanme5
    @Loanme5 4 роки тому

    Aaaaahhhh, now I get it. I don't have skates, but I was practicing Mohawks in my bare feet. You are a great teacher, and I am a poor student. I must have imagined I needed to jump from toe to toe, and I kept stumbling. I just happened to look up and see you go heel to heel, at 5:22, as I was tripping over my own feet. (Please don't ask me why I imagined it the other way. Toe to toe is the foundation for a good spinning heel kick though ;-)
    I've been to a rink twice in my life time. I'm over 50. I never skated because I could not understand how people were moving the way they do while all I could do was step like Frankenstein. I watched your basics video the other day and suddenly everything made sense. I'm gettin' me some skates.
