    Peter's development was really blatant, actually - from the very beginning of the movie, he wants to join the Avengers and be a big hero, but by the end he turns down Tony Stark's offer to join and accepts that he just wants to help the little guy and protect his neighborhood instead of fighting big Avengers battles. His arc is growing up and learning to narrow down your dreams to something realistic. And it makes sense he'd come to that, with him constantly being over his head every time he tries to prove something. He thinks he needs something bigger in his life (Avengers, global heroism, etc.) when everything he actually needs is already there (a best friend, an aunt, a community close to him that needs him)

    • @tcrpgfan
      @tcrpgfan 7 років тому +27

      It's not about thinking more realistically about what you want. The moral is actually about finding your place in the world. Spidey eventually realized that there was a gaping hole that the Avengers won't cover when it comes to being superheroes that he could easily fill. I think the way Feige described it was the best: "The difference between Spidey and the other heroes is that the other heroes are looking up, while Spidey is looking down. So while the other heroes are tackling a really large problem. Spidey notices that the little guy needs help dealing with the same problem, as well."

    • @awesomeinspector5270
      @awesomeinspector5270 6 років тому +1

      Feige's quote doesn't denounce that. He said "Spidey notices that the little guy needs help dealing with the same problem, as well." Responsibility. There was nothing there in the quote to say whether or not he wants the power or not but that he has the responsibility to look out for people.

    • @CeltycSparrow
      @CeltycSparrow 6 років тому +1

      I don't think its so much narrowing down his dreams into something realistic as realizing the unspoken mantra (at least in this movie) of Spiderman which is "With great power comes great responsibility". He is literally given this extraordinary power when Tony gives him the new Spiderman suit and he has NO idea how to control or respect the power he is given (mostly because he is still a kid playing with a very expensive toy and also because Tony gives him this insane suit and then Happy is completely WORTHLESS as a babysitter and utterly fails at looking after him and literally doesn't care until the very end). At all. He wants to be the hero and emulate the Avengers, and I think he sees Tony as this father-figure who he wants to earn respect from, but he is still just a kid. A clumsy, irresponsible kid who is so desperate to prove himself worthy that he can't realize that sometimes being the hero means ASKING FOR HELP. Like when he literally ripped the ferry in half and almost killed people. Or when he was fighting the Vulture and crashing a plane. Or when the Vulture threatened him with a gun. Yes, Tony took the suit after the Ferry incident and said "If the suit is all that matters, you shouldn't have it" (which is a great part of Peter's growth as a character) but then they never followed through with making sure he stayed out of trouble. In the end, when Tony offered to make him an Avenger, I do think he wanted to be the friendly neighborhood Spiderman, but I also don't think he wasn't ready to shoulder the responsibility of being something bigger yet.

      MagusMirificus he is the best Spiderman movie villain and I'll tell you why:
      He doesn't see himself as a villain, he sees nothing wrong with stealing these things and justifies it by saying he's doing it for his family. And what solidified him is towards the end when he's giving his monologue about "oh the rich and the powerful they don't care about us, they live in their glass ivory towers." But you look at his house and he pretty much lives in a mansion with a lot of glass windows. He's so blinded that he doesn't realize he's become what he preaches to hate.

    Let me add to the (likely) chorus of comments, but Spider-Man started as a teenager and had his most iconic origin moments as a teenager. It's kind of a defining characteristic. In an era where teens weren't anything more than sidekicks, Spider-Man was his own hero, without anyone telling him what to do. That's basically what this movie built to. So, yeah, you're going to get mostly teen Spider-Man, and maybe they'll probably cap off with his college years. But him being young is the point. We've seen adult Spider-Man. But the years that really shaped him are usually barely touched on.

    • @shankioad7150
      @shankioad7150 7 років тому +4

      Digital Jedi Master That isn't the issue, the issue is that this film was lacking what made Spider-Man who he is. Being a teenager is a poor excuse as I am the same age that he was in the film and even I felt that the reason behind him in this film was shallow. Being that age he would have been more destrought over the loss of Ben as it would have happened recently, not drooling over Stark's approval.

    • @l1fe1ssh0rt
      @l1fe1ssh0rt 7 років тому +1

      Wait how would you know it happened recently. There was no mentioned for when it happened. For all we know it could have happened years before civil war. Also, don't generalize how people deal with sadness. Assumptions are not legit criticism. All i can see from the comment is you did not like the movie because you didn't want to, not because of legit objective criticism.

    Wait, wait, wait...the first half of the movie, you guys have no idea what is driving Peter? Um, he helped the Avengers and then had to go back to school. He spends the movie texting Happy because after getting a taste of being a real superhero, Tony sends him back to his ordinary life where he's bored out of his mind. The first half is shallow because Peter feels like he has been put on hold and nothing special is going on in his life. What I appreciated about this movie is that Peter is a real person. With most superhero movies, you generally get no sense of who the person is when they're not saving the world. The movie feels like a string of big action moments smattered with a few random conversations. Every scene is telling you something important rather than showing you the person's life. The movie rounded out Peter's life and gave the movie a chance to breathe. You knew who his friends were, you saw who he was at school, and you saw the bond between him and Aunt May. Sorry to write a book, but come on, guys. Also, did you really need them to mention Uncle Ben? We all know the story. When May freaked out about calling all of the hospitals, the movie trusts you to know why. They don't insult your intelligence by spelling it out.

    They DO mention the spider bite. Peter tells Ned that, Ned is asking if the spider can bite him and questioning whether it would be worth the pain, and Peter says, "The spider's dead Ned." And regarding Uncle Ben, you remember when the first Shocker pulls the gun on Aaron Davis? If you look very closely, I'm 90% sure that you can see the eyes of the suit widen a little. To me, the thought process of Peter is clear: "Not again. Not like what happened to Uncle Ben." Especially considering the next thing that happened was he dropped down and yelled "Hey if you're going to shoot at someone shoot at me!"

      Thunderbolt8296 The spider was a radioactive spider and it gave him heightened senses, super strength, spider sense(danger detector), and the ability to stick to stuff. He doesn't per se need the suit but it helps him that's why he could fight Vulture without it. Uncle Ben was his father figure who was shot because Peter let a criminal get away with what he was doing.

    • @randomduck8679
      @randomduck8679 7 років тому +5

      Thunderbolt8296 really? Well he was bitten by a radioactive spider (he was invented in the 60s so this is typical comic stuff). It gives him a bunch of powers and he puts on a suit to hide his identity and uses his powers to make money on TV. Eventually Peter sees a robber being chased and instead of stopping him, he lets him pass as he's sees it not his problem. Eventually his uncle Ben is shot and Peter goes after his murderer and stops him. But it turns out the killer is the same robber that Peter ignored. Peter then decides to become a hero.

    Rurouni Kenshin is a perfect example of a manga/anime that doesn't get into the origin story of the hero until the final two arcs. The first season just introduces a former assassin w/ a cross-shaped scar on his face and a reverse-blade katana. The 2nd season then delves into his childhood training. But it's not until the last manga arc where it's finally revealed why he went from a fearsome killer to someone who doesn't kill, as well as how he got his scar.

He would have given up if not for his devotion to the people he loves. Here, other then saving himself there’s no real incentive to get up. “Oh no, Tony’s shit will get stolen.” In the long run, it’s not good but it’s not nearly as good a motivator as “the love of my life will die in front of my eyes if I do not get my shit together.”

      Кирилл Поповкин To their credit, Batman has had a LOT more media attention than Spiderman. From the 60s Batman to Burton to Schumaker to all the animated series/movies to Nolan and Snyder... each one of those (except the 60s one) has a flash back to the Wayne murders (hell even Gotham did it). We have seen it so many times that we dont need to see it again. Spiderman is still a relatively 'new' character in mainstream media so they are arguing that we still need that grounding. But I, for one, am GLAD Marvel scrapped an origin story tbh...

    • @kiriruro
      @kiriruro 7 років тому +31

      Yeah, it sort of is true, but... Really, who watches Batman from 60s or even Burton's version nowadays? Relative popularity and number of movies is not a good arguments in this case. To put it simply, Doug says "well, if a person does not know, he will be confused" - okey, but who is that person? Spider-man is one of most popular superheroes, if someone knows something about superheroes, it's that Superman came from Krypton, Bruce Wayne lost his parents and Peter Parker is sort of responsible for the death of his uncle Ben.
      And telling this story third time in less then 20 years, in which this movies were rebooted three times... How is it different from Batman?

    Peter isn't Spider-man just to impress the Avengers or his girlfriend in this film, you can realize that not just from the ending of the film that pretty much spells it out for you, but also troughout the movie, like the pool scene when he pretty much ditches his crush to get to the bad guy while disobeying Tony Stark, or the party scene where he doesn't relly want to show up in the party. I do agree that this film suffers from being part of the massive industry, because you actually learn what drives Peter in this Universe in civil war from dialogue, but not nearly as much as other Marvel films of movies in general these days, I would count this as a step in the right direction.

I litteraly had no idea why he said no to Tony when I was in the theater. And you can't just say that what drives him is in Civil War. If anything they should have explored what he had mentioned in Civil War rather than just saying "Well he told STARK his motivations in a film that wasn't even his." And being the same age as he is in the film I felt appalled about how he never for once stopped to think about his vain thirst for glory and actually take a look at why the Vulture needs to be stopped or how Aunt May is holding up emotionally. The excuse of being a teenager is garbage as even I know that wanting glory shouldn't be the reason behind helping people. To be honest this film completely missed the point behind Spiderman (though the writing and the performances were done well) that being how Spiderman is an independent hero who's interests don't lie in being a big time hero, but are there because of how he learned that having these powers means that he has s moral obligation to help those in need. Whether it be big scale of small scale. Not the need to impress.

      ragmondead Yea there was also a TON of people bitching because they were afraid this Spider-man was going to re-do the origin story. I get what Rob is saying. They could have thrown in a line or 2 about Uncle Ben like when May and Peter are out eating a "Your Uncle would have been so proud of you" line. But on the other hand it's hard to throw that at the audience without saying what exactly happened and why Peter may feel responsible so from that perspective it would be better to hide behind "We just don't want to talk about right now." Sure it's shallow but I don't think they wanted to roll everything out in this movie. I think in the 2nd movie we are going to dig deeper.

      For me, Spider-Man is a character that can have a different motivation other than guilt over the death of a family member, and still stay essentially Spider-Man. Uncle Ben could have died a million ways, and they could have had a lot of time pass where they get back to their lives and not have to constantly bring him up. I dig the idea of a kid who sees heroes on the TV saving the city, then he gets powers and wants to imitate those he worships. It is consistent with Civil War and what Peter saw in NYC, which serves as good motivation as any.

    • @edwardmillard4398
      @edwardmillard4398 7 років тому +1

      There are "one or two lines" that refer to his origin if you pay attention, when Peter gives Tony an altered version of the "with great power comes great responsibility" speech in civil war, when Peter says to Ned in this movie that he can't tell aunt may because of all she's ben through which is an obvious reference to Uncle Ben's death especially since we never see him around, he was aunt mays husband and its the only tragic event that occurs early in spiderman's career (been spider man for less than year). Also Ned says in following scene "so you were bitten by a spider". Also whats this from the MCU wiki? : marvelcinematicuniverse.wikia.com/wiki/Ben_Parker

    • @foshee1123
      @foshee1123 7 років тому +2

      That is nonsensical. Simply stating she has been through a lot is not enough to ground your movie with a general audience, especially when you are changing so much from the source material. And your second line is in civil war which isn't this movie. Obviously I know what they are referencing I have seen all of the major cinematic spider-man movies and all of the avengers movies; however, if you ask every person who came out of that movie having never heard of spiderman why spiderman wants to be a superhero what answer would you get? Probably something to the effect of the greater good. Compare that to the true story behind spiderman and the reason he is such a deep hero and it is a huge missed opportunity to establish a deep character. These are things that should be integral to his character as a hero not easter eggs you infer from past comic knowledge.

Flash tries to bring Parker down a peg to make himself feel better, and all he has going for him is his family's money. And Peter mostly ignored him, I until a girl is wstching. He didn't need to suit, he doesn't need anyone else, he's strong by himself and he's stronger than he thinks. That's development. *SPOILER*
    I don't understand how you can have an hour long review of this movie and NOT talk about the rubble scene?? It was easily the best scene in the movie and, at least for me, cemented Tom Holland as the best actor, in regards to genuine raw acting ability, to play spider-man. It was SUCH a character defining moment in both the comics and the movie and they executed it beautifully.
    I think you're wrong about this movie. To me, it embodied everything spider-man is about. The charm, the comedy, the heart, the youth and the idea that, when you're in the position that Peter is, the needs of others are more important than the needs of your own. This is the spider-man movie I feel like I've been waiting for and I can't wait to see what else the decide to do with this character in this universe.

    1: Her name is Liz. 2: He's 15 years old, his voice is fine for someone who should be in high school. 3: Flash was updated for the times. He is rich which is why he feels he can pick on people like Peter. 4: I didn't think they needed to include Uncle Ben in this since it's been 8 months since Peter's gotten his powers. I'm sure it's long enough to grieve. As far as why Peter is doing what he's doing, initially it was probably due to something that happened to Uncle Ben, now it's because he got a taste of being a real superhero in Civil War and after some time he isn't doing anything more than what he was doing prior to Civil War.

    • @hafaball
      @hafaball 7 років тому +4

      I don't know if it's long enough to grieve, but his motivation is impressing Stark to join the Avengers. I don't know how Rob and Doug couldn't figure that out. That's why he's filming himself. Stark is kind of a father figure to him now and his hero. It's really not Primer.

      @TheDukeofCheese12 6 років тому +4

      I cannot agree with the whole "it's been a long enough time to grieve" argument. The death of a loved one, especially one who looked after you throughout a good portion of your life, doesn't really go away. Especially in Peter's case, where he feels personally responsible for not preventing Uncle Ben's death. I'm thankful that they didn't do the whole "Ben gets shot" scene again at risk of feeling played out, but the fact that it wasn't mentioned at all did bug me a little.

      One thing the movies didn't do so well is pointing out when Peter actually got started on his motivation. His first appearance in the MCU was in Iron Man 2! Yeah, Peter Parker has actually been around much longer than the movies themselves ever say directly. He was the kid in the Iron Man mask that Tony saves from the drone. When this is recognized, then yes, his motivations for helping people out makes total sense. While he's not doing it out of a sense of guilt or responsibility like most Spiderman incarnations, he's doing it out of hero worship because his own life was saved by a superhero. In this Spiderman's mind, that's just what people who have powers are supposed to do!

Some kids today are watching and enjoying Homecoming like it’s their holy grail, and for someone out there, it may very well be their first ever MCU film experience that they’ll cherish in their memories forever. The thought of this alone makes my heart swell up with adoration for the film, because that feeling is the exact same feeling I myself had when I saw the original movies in theaters for the first time.

      Maybe. It seems only 1 person died, and technically, even that was an accident. In order for us to be put in the true Peter Parker's shoes, there needed to be that turning point of Uncle Ben's death to really ground him. He may have once been an ordinary kid, but getting the spider powers was too much for his adolescent mind, and the hard lesson of his uncle getting killed, HIS RESPONSIBILITY, was a huge character arc missed, I feel. Tobey may have whined and cried, maybe even let the character go mushy. But he learned his lesson. Feeling as if you are responsible, and actually HAVING responsibility are 2 very different things, both negligible. If all you want in a Spider-Man is a humorous boy in a modern setting with great powers, then Tom is your guy. Despite our disagreements, I respect your perspective.

The thing I love most about it is that Peter's arc does something I don't think ANY superhero movie has ever done, which is have the hero genuinely adopt part of the villain's philosophy and have that be the defining turning point of his growth. I'm literally incapable of understanding the argument that Peter didn't have an arc.

    You're... you're actually complaining that there *wasn't* an origin story? That's insane. That's part of what made this movie great and set it apart from the other very recent iterations. Origin stories are some of people's biggest complaints with superhero movies! We know Batman's parents died. We know Uncle Ben died. We know about all that. There's no reason to tread that ground again.
    If they want to, here's plenty of time to get into that in later movies, but anybody with a shred of comic knowledge (book, movie, otherwise) knows about Uncle Ben, knows about power and resposibility, knows about the spider bite.

    just for everyone's reference, Michelle is not Mary Jane. Kevin Feige stated in an interview that Michelle is not Mary Jane. here's the direct quote:
    "Well, we never even looked at it as a big reveal necessarily but more of just a fun homage to his past adventures and his past love. She's not Mary Jane Watson. She never was Mary Jane Watson. She was always this new high school character, Michelle, who we know there's an "M" in Michelle and an "M" in Mary. [laughs] So we're so clever and we thought, "Wouldn't it be neat if her initials were MJ?" And then I think it leaked that she would be playing MJ and then it became a whole headache for Zendaya to have to navigate. It was never a big, "Oh my God, it's a big reveal!" There are big reveals in the movie. That's not one of them."

It's brilliant that they were able to keep him from being fully evil while still making him into a bad guy that's bad enough that he needs to be brought down but doesn't necessarily need to be killed.

    The problem is that you're looking at this like a one off. Marvel had control of the character again and so long as it makes Sony money they can keep doing movies. Rushing his entire character arc and the audience's interpretation of him to match the comics as fast as possible would be a ridiculous plan. Everything in this movie is set up to allow the characters to grow. It gives peter the room to grow older, mature and gain more experience. The action scenes aren't as good because he's learning how to fight. His motives aren't in the forefront because he is either developing them still or they aren't as important as introducing the character and making him likable. Hell, the first half of the movie is funny and seems "shallow" because we're being introduced to Peter in a manner that ensures he's endearing. Now that we have a jumping off point where we understand who peter Parker is, who his friends are, what his morals are, and so on, they can build him up, give him more experience and emotional connection to the audience. This entire movie is simply the base of Peter Parker's character and I predict in the next movies and the future crossovers, that we'll see his motives and backstory deepen immensely.

      It would have been so against the tone of the movie to have Uncle Ben die/dead. They could've had him alive and killed him off in the next film, which would have been amazing, imagine getting to know Uncle Ben before he gets killed and used forever as a sort of over-used motivation device. I still think this movie did well in not having an origin story, he's just a 16 year old kid who wants to help people and thats fine. You cant go into the movie thinking "if they dont do this and that then they're ruining the character and the movie".

      It's particularly cringeworthy when they go "Do they even say the words Uncle Ben?!" when, while the film didn't in fact do that, it was heavily implied that Uncle Ben died because of the whole "My aunt is going through a very rough time and I don't want to have my secret out there, she wouldn't be able to handle that kind of pressure right now." thing.

      Elijah Lucero They didn't want an origin, what they wanted was for Peter to honour or at least recall the legacy of Uncle Ben. For example the rubble scene would have been the perfect opportunity to remember Uncle Ben and how he would never fail anyone else in his life again. Remember Aunt May and how she wouldn't be able to handle the loss of Peter, especially after the loss of Ben. How that thought would have given him strength like it did in the comics. Not fucking Stark and how disappointed he would be.

    • @Commander_Shepard.
      @Commander_Shepard. 7 років тому

      It's because they are movies, not comics. In comics you can span the hero movies out for decades of storylines and hundreds of issues, while in movies, a supehero can only get a trilogy at most. So they have to give room for multiple great villains instead of rehashing them for multiple movies.
      Unless they can play part in multiple crossover movies like Loki.

    • @TheSmokingSkull
      @TheSmokingSkull 7 років тому

      That last part is what I'm talking about. The movies should not kill off most of their villains (unless completely necessary), because it robs the villain of the chance to fight other heroes or team up with other villains. If Hela dies in *Thor: Ragnarok*, I'm going to be pretty upset. Not only would it be another villainous character down the drain, it would make her completely useless in the rest of the movie universe.
      You know what the movie should do? Have Hela take the place of the character Death (since she is basically the Asgardian version of Death), don't kill off Thanos in the Infinity War movies, and have Hala be the one who Thanos falls in love with. He would still technically be "courting Death" like in the comics and Hela (one of the coolest-looking villains I've seen so far) would survive for more movies.
      Plus, it would give the MCU a break and not make Infinity War have to introduce another new character (Death) just to kill her off at the end.

      Spiderman doesn't exist without an Uncle Ben origin as batman doesn't exist without his parents death. This is what motivates Spiderman to be a hero, instead of just some teen with powers. He would be a completely irresponsible jackass without Uncle Ben.
      This is his PRIME motivation. Would you be okay if they just cut Batman's parent's death out of batman...or superman's planet exploding out? You just have to mention it somewhere. Not 30 minutes long, but a "Hey Uncle Ben died and it really effected our lives" is enough.

      Fenixilius Strife But that's exactly what they did...."Aunt May has been going through a lot" was not a throw away line. The origin already happened, they just felt the need not to show it. Uncle Ben is the reason, Peter started fighting crime in the first place, this film is about a different conflict entirely: self acceptance and proving what he's capable of. Showing Uncle Ben's death was not necessary for this arc.

    I get the feeling that Tony is the new "Uncle Ben". The paternal mentor that teaches Peter about responsibility and power. He's now got a protégé and is engaged to Pepper, assumably getting everything he wants. We know that Infinity War is going to change the landscape of the Avengers and transition us into the new phase of the MCU. It's common practice to make the characters that you're about to lose 'as happy as can be'. The "everything that May's been through" line could easily refer to whatever left Peter as an orphan, losing a sibling and in-law.

    I kind of felt the "Oh, that's not the anti gravity gun" moment was a turning point for Toomes. Until then he'd been able to tell himself he wasn't a bad guy - He didn't do bad things (just the people he sold to did). Then his accidental incineration of someone was a tipping point, where having killed one person by mistake he, instead of feeling remorse, felt empowered and ready/ prepared to kill again if it suited him.
    So, more character development than taking the edge off a serious moment with levity.
