Thanks to you, I just finished replacing the lock actuator on my 01 crv. ****One TIP**** I was able to remove the actuator from the latch without removing the door handle and the rod that is attached to the lever, I've done that by unscrewing the only screw on the actuator through the small hole (maybe half-inch in diameter) in the door itself. And through the same hole, I screwed the new actuator in place. This saved me a lot of work.
Mate, honestly seriously appreciate how you explain things , plus clearly define where and how things are with steady camera movements and straightforward language use. I would like to see more how to's done by you.
Thanks for the video I followed the advice in the comments and was able to change it out on the driver side door without completely removing it. I just removed the 3 screws holding the actuator, the 10mm bolt below it and the c clip connecting the rod to the door handle. The small screw on the actuator was longer than I expected and was a little difficult to remove but I got it done in about half an hr. 👍
Thanks for the video, just did this on mine. Tips: If the circular clip is rusty, you can take off EVERYTHING (including the handle) together if you take the time to slide the handle into the handle hole and pull it all down into the door cavity. You should be able to pull it all out through the biggest hole on the inside. If your actuator phillips screw pattern was rusty like mine, the screws on the OLD actuator housing can be used as a new screw.
I figured out a way to replace actuator without taking whole assembly out of the car. It involved taking the screw off that holds the bottom window rail, and lowering/removing the rail but leaving the window channel in place. The window channel is flexible enough to swing up and out of the way, and now you have enough room to pull the assembly to front of car, just enough to see and remove the single screw holding the actuator in place. Sorry I didn't do a video. Thanks for your video that gives us all a great head start, and confidence to tackle this on our own! Stay Safe!
I just did this, the door lock does not have to be removed. To remove the bars by the door lock, the yellow plastic tab can be unlocked and the spinning tab can be pried loose by a flat screwdriver easily.
I used your video to do the drivers side door and I was able to fix it!!! In my case I had to replace the whole assembly but without you I'd have no clue how to do it, THANK YOU SO MUCH!! 🙌🙌🙌
Thanks to other comments I saved lots of time, did not need to remove outside car handle. After removing the door panel I went straight for the 3 screws on the side of the door 8:34 and the 10mm bolt 4:58 below it. I then unclip the yellow clip (just unlatch towards myself) next to c clip 5:45. Then yank on the actuator from below while uncrewing the single screw that holds it in place 9:51. Do this by feeding the screwdriver through the small hole at the bottom of door. Only painful part was having to pull the actuator downward the entire time while unscrewing and screwing it back in place through the same hole. Also it takes quite a bit of force to take the actuator off the sliding mechanism 10:46 this way, hard to generate force if haven't removed it completely from the door. As a last note, make sure the plastic moving part on the actuator is between the two metal part 11:14 or else the actuator will make sound but won't lock or unlock. HOPE THIS COMMENT HELPS OTHER AS WELL!
Thanks buddy! I followed your steps from ordering the actuator from Amazon, then your entire installation. Took me about an hour. All working now and no more door lock hassel. Thanks again and saved me allot of time, effort and money.
This was very, very helpful. I managed not to remove the door handle (a clip identical to the inside handle). Putting it back it helped to slide the window rail down the rubber without taking it off entirely but enough to pull it forward and put the lock back inside
Good explanation and inside views. In my ' 99 CRV i have first changed the control relay of the control unit. As far I know actually the relay makes some familiar clik ( once it was not ). I will check the unit and I will replace it . Thank to Garage Built Hondas . My car becomes younger day by day.
Yo man!Thank you. Took it apart and put it back together and felt really accomplished. Only hickup was when I put the actuator in, it wouldn't lock with the key fab. We gave up and decided we would take it apart again if we had to. But low and behold, once we got it all put back together, it worked to unlock and lock the door and it's awesome. Thanks for the great video! You just saved me $400.
Had the same issue with the godawful noise on my wife’s CR-V. Just replaced the actuator thanks to this vid with no issues and it’s nice and quiet again. Thanks for the good work
Great video. Just a couple things. At 5:34, rather then removing the c-clip just flip the yellow plastic holder around and then pull out the rod. Also, at 6:52 if you push the door handle back through the door then you can spin it around to get it off the rod. Pulling it off will just break the plastic clip otherwise.
Nick Jimroglou yea didn’t need to remove the c-clip just twist tab pull out also didn’t need to remove the other rod that attaches to the door handle take everything out from inside the door
Excellent video. One tip; you don't have to release the blue clip that retains the interior door rod. It will come out attached and, more importantly, will go back in attached. Extremely difficult to get back into its blue clip and secured once the latch assembly is back in place.

I broke the driver side one off and want to buy a new one but the only ones I see are on ebay. Ebay has 1 listing for an OEM tan one that is very used, but I want black new ones. Rockauto has nothing surprisingly. Do they screw in? If so what threading? Not quite sure if they'll work. I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide me. If you could give a possible recomendation where to buy new ones would be awesome. Very helpful. I've been trying to remove the door lock cylinder based on the manual instructions. Cannot see or get to the cylinder retaining U-clip . Now I will try to remove the entire handle, which should make finding the clip and removing the cylinder alot easier.
@@GarageBuiltHondas thanks. There's something stuck in the lock cylinder, so I need to remove the cylinder. Looks like a piece of red straw (WD40)? Very deep. I couldn't pick it out. Might have to go with new cylinder and key.

Is this something different than the actuator? All the doors lock fine when I hold the interior handle of the driver's side front door and push down.
It might be the wiring behind the fender. It's a common issue on the 97-01 CRV and 96-00 Civic for that bundle or wires to lose connection over time and aging.
im not trying to correct you etc..im like you just feeling my way in the dark, your video has really helped as i hadnt a clue....i discovered;you dont need to take the c clip off @ 5.48 mins in,just pop round the yellow retainer clip on the rod.you dont actually need to disconnect the rod from the door handle either...once youve got the door handle off everything should be loose enough to pull out into view, where you can just remove the one retaining screw to the motor and itll come off.you just replace the motor then and bobs your uncle!!i hope thats of some help in future.cheers,Dave
Done mine no joke 15 mins. So followed the steps but couldn't be asked with taking the whole thing out and doing it out the car. So took door panel off. Undo the 3 screws holding the actuator assembly and the bolt. The c clip you undone from the back of the outside handle I took off and that allowed the whole unit to drop. Undone the screw slid out and put new one in while it was still in the door it allows enough room to get a screw driver in and take it out. Then push it back into place done.
I had to learn how everything worked and to show each mechanism. A lot of people don't have the mechanical experience so I wanted this to describe every single part that they may need to remove to get it swapped out. I'll try your method on my driver door as that actuator is getting really *weak.*
@@GarageBuiltHondas yes without your step by step I wouldn't of been able to work it out. Even with the 3 screws and the bolt you can move it down. But buy undoing the I'm guess the barrel c clip and moving that it then drops completely which is so easy
I couldn't find a brand new one for mine I'm in the UK. Everyone I messaged on eBay said it wasn't the right one for my car. Think it's because we drive on the other side so passenger side for me is your driver's side. Might get a new one and just put driver's side in and see if that works. But the unit I got even though it's 2nd hand has done 160k and is fine my car was is on 110k and it was making the sound so fingers crossed this unit will stay fine
Thanks. Mine didnt make noise but it wouldnt lock with the key, same issue tho; worn out attenuator to attend to ha. Its sluggish when you lock it with the inside door switch but wouldnt lock at all with key from outside the vehicle. Have to reach from the back door, what a hassle, gotta put a new one in so thanks again
Would i be able to disable the actuator? I just want to use my keys since i dont have the fob anyway. Would the door stay locked or unlocked without that actuator? My problem now is that its easy to lock with the key but lots of resistance when unlocking. Thank you!
I've seen people say that he didn't have to remove the C-clip, but I think he did it to prove that it could somehow will it to stay on the tip of the screwdriver. That would have shot off into the door never to be seen again if it were me doing this job. Even if somehow I had managed to end with it balanced on the screwdriver, now way that makes it all the way out the door; again, it would have fallen through to the alternate dimension where the extra hardware in IKEA boxes comes from.
I have a 2000 crv, driver side door lock will not respond to key opening it's gives no resistance when inserting the key and trying to turn it just turns, alarm unlock doesn't work either and the rest of the doors don't unlock unless the driver does. Seems the driver lock is the master but I can pull the lock up manually but it will not unlock the rest of the doors. I currently have to open the passenger side with the key which works and reach over and pull up the driver lock. Do you think it's the actuator or something else? Oh and on some super rare occasions when i try to open the door with the key it will work but it's pretty resistant to turn.
I bought mine 3 years ago and have been very happy with it even with the constant sway bar link replacements. Mine is a 5 speed, you can take it up to 4000 RPM's when a little more push is needed. You may have wanted to do the power window and reg while you were in there.
They do. I ended up getting the heavy duty sway bar links on the last time so we'll see how long they last. I don't drive it that much. Common flaw with this car along with the exhaust valves, keep them adjusted every 30, 000 miles. Like the Integra, most of the weight of this car is on the front tires so constant maintenance in that area is needed. Otherwise very reliable.
Interesting and thanks! I'll have to take a look at mine. I'm also going to adjust the valves once I get to the timing belt soon! Appreciated the info!
Are the front and rear actuators the same for each side (need to replace the left rear) , they all say front actuator for either left or right side on amazon
Is there any electronics in the locking mechanism that is above the actuator? My button just isn't working at all. I tried replacing the switch and verified connections in the door, all fuses are good. It seems like the switch is just not getting power to the actuator
He also owns the silver crx we've been working on lately. He still has it. He's been looking for a shop to paint it but been spending a lot of money on the silver one lately trying to get it finished and ready for the track.
Hey could you help me with a problem I’m having? My 91 civic wagon won’t rev past 3200 rpms. All fuses are good the clutch is good and shifts perfect into each gear any help?
Will Definitely buy some merchandise off you I own 2 crx now got a mini me off a friend that needs the bottom end rebuild said it was making some noise but it was freshly rebuilt new gaskets all the way around I only paid 50$ for it. And I also bought a B18B1 long block for 100$ which was a steal gonna rebuild that cause man that thing has some nasty oil all over it and I’m not too sure of the mileage and how it was maintained.
Garage Built Hondas I got the black rolling shell for my girlfriend to have something to mess with but she can’t drive stick well so I’ll end up driving both of them so I have no complaints 😁 but she will learn I want her too she has been practicing off my fiesta st.
Oh nice, she'll pick it up in no time for sure. My wife is the most uncoordinated person I know and she learned to drive manual on an old Integra I had, your GF will be just fine. Lol
Anybody out there know a good set of a aftermarket quality front axles I've been through O'Reilly's twice they seem to wear out quick and I'm taking that's why my car is popping shaking in the front
Do you think the actuator can be the problem on my wife's Honda Stream too? The drivers side does not unlock most of the time (sometimes it does), but it locks good everytime. Any tips?
It's automatic awd but it is sluggish on take off, the rpms are going up but it barley moves. Its throwing a P0740. I'm going to test and change the shift solenoids and see if it helps. Also the speedometer is off by 10 mph. So it might need a speed sensor not sure. The fluid is good. Just wanted to know if you have had any experience with this issue? Thanks Jon!
I'm not familiar with that issue. But if the shift solenoids are throwing a code, then try to get that changed out and fixed asap. I bet it could be the problem. Mine is AWD and auto too, it's exactly what I wanted!
Yeah I hope it's a easy fix lol! What's your plans with your crv? Mine came lowered on coilovers but it's a very rough ride probably going back to stock or find a legit lowering kit , not sure yet. But I'm interested to see what you do with it but because all your cars are clean!👍
I only plan to perform any maintenance it needs and keep it as clean and functionally sound as possible. I might get some wheels eventually and maybe an intake and header to give it a little more power but that'll be it. It's my daily and I don't want to take away from how comfy it is.
It is a perfect comfortable and function daily. I just have 2013 civic SI wheels on mine! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and breakdowns! I learned a lot on my Y-49 CRX thanks 👍
It really is. I sold my Toyota pickup when I found this and haven't regretted it once! I'd like to find something lightweight for wheels to help with gas mileage, but we'll see. Do you still have the y49?
@@GarageBuiltHondas I kinda fixed it!?!?!? I just removed the worm gear till I get another actuator. It doesn't make a sound and the lock is manual for now. Now I'm wondering if there gears need spacing or something rather.
I’ve been having problems finding the Rear Driver side Door lock actuator. But some people are saying that the “Front” one will work on the rear too. Anybody has had this issue?
Interesting, I just looked it up and found their is a settlement for 07-11 models. topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/lawsuit-news/40936-honda-agrees-cr-v-door-lock-settlement-1-4m-attorneys-fees/
Cool, so he wasn't lying. I took one apart and there's a spring inside that looks like it puts to much tension on the rod. His wasn't making noise, instead it would lock and then unlock by itself.
On my 99 CR-V, the right front passenger door lock wouldn't function from the driver's lock switch. All three other locked worked fine. So I replaced the actuator with one I got at a junk yard, and I first tested it directly from my battery. It worked. I then tested the old one the same way, and it worked also. So I hooked up test wired with a connector I also got at the junkyard, with about 6 inches of wiring on it. I connected it to the last connector on the door (where you plug in the actuator), and I found there is power at that point going to the actuator. But apparently not enough to power the lever on it. Now I am not sure what to do to fix it.
Good video but you really didn’t need to take out the c clip just twist the tab to the left n rod will come lose for the other rod that attache to the door handle leave it on slide the door handle inside the door and pull everything out underneath
@4:30 don’t permanently remove that ugly plastic thing. It also reduces wind noise in the car. My CRV has terrible wind noise but I made sure that plastic was tight and taped up any spots it didn’t cover and the wind noise is 90% gone.
That would have shot off into the door never to be seen again if it were me doing this job. Even if somehow I had managed to end with it balanced on the screwdriver, now way that makes it all the way out the door; again, it would have fallen through to the alternate dimension where the extra hardware in IKEA boxes comes from.
Man thank you for making this vid it really help me a lot thanks bro
You're welcome
CRV Time! Amazing work Jon
Finally!!
Garage Built Hondas time has come
🙏👍
Sway bar end links replacements? They go bad?
Mines auto, it's a little sluggish but it encourages me to drive slower. 😀
Just checking in Jon about my integra project just making sure we still up for it
Always!
Thanks Jon
👍
Thanks bro. Great help.
You're welcome
This was super helpful. That brass clip is hard to put back on though, I dropped mine inside the door :( Gotta improvise something else now..
Get a magnet made for grabbing tools.
Are the front and rear actuators the same for each side (need to replace the left rear) , they all say front actuator for either left or right side on amazon
I do not know.
Is there any electronics in the locking mechanism that is above the actuator? My button just isn't working at all. I tried replacing the switch and verified connections in the door, all fuses are good. It seems like the switch is just not getting power to the actuator
You may want to double check the wires feeding into the door. It's a common issue on these 1st gens with the wires degrading.
Again...great help on these videos thankyou
You're welcome
What does it mean when the front two doors don’t lock w the primary lock?
Switch might be broken, or possibly bad wiring at the doors.
Hey bro, Hey when you hit the door lock, do all door locks move? My crv only the driver door locks.
Yes
Yesssss some V action
I need to get some maintenance done!! Had it for 7 months already and finally had a chance to get a little work done.
Nice little fix, good info!
What did you think about the TRC video about the turbo single cam eg making that much power for 5000? the parts list itself on the motor is over 3k!?
What happened to the crx? The one that got jdm the front bumper
Distributor. Check that next with a known good working one.
Thanks Bro, I just got a used CRV same exact color haha, and this was the issue, thanks so much
Nice, you're welcome!!
Does this only affect the driver side or all doors? What if all my doors do not want to unlock or lock ?
Might be your wiring leading to the switch. This problem can affect all doors.
Garage Built Hondas
How can I fix this problem?
Check your wiring, check your door switch, and then thr actuators last if the 1st 2 dont fix it.
Crxs are so fun, I want to find another one that's a little rougher so I can definitely have some fun with it!
Lol
I have a 97 automatic CRV where can I obtain a key fob

Anybody out there know a good set of a aftermarket quality front axles I've been through O'Reilly's twice they seem to wear out quick and I'm taking that's why my car is popping shaking in the front
I prefer AutoZone axles. They don't offer refurbished axles anymore and the Duralast ones they offer I've had a lot of good luck with them.
@@GarageBuiltHondas okay thanks for the info about the axles
@@GarageBuiltHondas oh I forgot to ask one other question for you or anybody out there
This is an excellent video thanks
Both putting it in Ecu easy part Am doing it right now and trying to figure out

Where can I buy the rear door lock actuators for a Honda CR-V 97?
I don't see them online anywhere. Might not be available.
Great job and video! My kid has the same car.
Thanks
great video I haveto replace r passenger door must be simple no videos on it can someone help
The entire door?
Do you think the actuator can be the problem on my wife's Honda Stream too? The drivers side does not unlock most of the time (sometimes it does), but it locks good everytime. Any tips?
Absolutely. They tend to wear out over time. Some may wear out prematurely.
@@GarageBuiltHondas Thanks I will check it out!
what is the part of that tiny gear engine?
I'm not sure.
To make things easier u don’t need to remove the C clip, just remove the connecting rod just like what u did with the door handle, much easier
I could really use your expertise with it
Got to do mine. Ordered the part just waiting for it to come. How long did it take roughly
2-4 hours
How is the cheap actuator holding up? I bought a $12 one on ebay
No issues so far
Thanks it’s very good information thanks 🙏🌹👋💐👋🌹🙏
You're welcome
They are different. I recently checked at a junk yard
What's different?
nice video men like always. more crv videos
Thanks, more soon!
Very good thanks sir for showing us

We're you located need work done on my two first gen crv
El Paso, TX
This makes it less intimidating thank you
You got this!
@@GarageBuiltHondas I kinda fixed it!?!?!? I just removed the worm gear till I get another actuator. It doesn't make a sound and the lock is manual for now. Now I'm wondering if there gears need spacing or something rather.
Thanks 😊
Hope it helps!
I’ve been having problems finding the Rear Driver side Door lock actuator. But some people are saying that the “Front” one will work on the rear too. Anybody has had this issue?
I'm unsure. I haven't looked for one before.
Honda must have never changed their design, cause my friend just had all his done. He has a 06 or 07 and he told me dealer did it for free.
Too bad it wasn't for these. Lol. It's old anyway and bound to happen.
You should make more videos on other stuff you do on your crv I just bought one

Mine keeps locking itself when it’s off and my remote is dead
U got to do some hondata s300 v3 install in ur car step by step vids

Nice job, thank you.

Fix the wiring issue
If only I watched this before I lost my patience and ripped the actuator out of my car 😂
The beauty of working on cars. Lol
How do you like the CR-V Jon? im thinking of getting one for a daily?
I love it, best decision I've made for a daily driver this year!
Hope u make more videos
I plan on it!
The motors are FC-280 with collar ebay i found one seller at around 6$
Sweet
New BRV Jon? K20 swap inc.
Daily driver, needs to be as stock and simple as possible. 😀
Looks like a huge pain. Thankfully our EFs don't have this problem lol
It was easier than removing the EF door latch thankfully!! But still one of those tedious jobs that's not any fun until it's complete. Lol
Thank you it worked but please if you're going to post a video the music the background is makes it so hard to hear what you're saying
Honda UA-cam Builders UNITE!
👍🙏
Good video but you really didn’t need to take out the c clip just twist the tab to the left n rod will come lose for the other rod that attache to the door handle leave it on slide the door handle inside the door and pull everything out underneath
Is that what you did?
Garage Built Hondas yea it was way easier
Can we change to TAMIYA motor in that actuator ?🤭?
I'm sure if it fits, why not?
Muchisimas gracia ya lo hise
@4:30 don’t permanently remove that ugly plastic thing. It also reduces wind noise in the car. My CRV has terrible wind noise but I made sure that plastic was tight and taped up any spots it didn’t cover and the wind noise is 90% gone.
👍 will do!
It's called a vapor barrier, fyi.
@@getsmarter5412 I’ll keep that in mind, thanks man!
Bro I just bought a 2001 crv

i hate door panel jobs, always hope i don't have to do them
Door panels I don't mind, the internals can be tricky!
yeah that's what I meant sorry haha. It's a good time to clean/lube the mechanisms and window tracks though
Very true! I vacuumed and cleaned all the dirt out of the bottom of the door, there was a small pile of it.
