MIke Mangini Untethered Angel Replay

- This is a replay of the song from my studio. It does not seem like it would be in a top 10 "difficult" songs to play, except when anyone, me included, tries to play every note in the exact right place in time- no stopping. This isn't perfect. It's close. Most people understand this and like me, just try to get better looking forward, not behind. I'm enjoying my classes because I'm finally able to share with people what's going on to backbone the band. The body movements from left to right are brutal. It is difficult to hit hard and in time while the trunk of the body switches sides so much. The feet are switching sides per key signature and other musical changes. The cymbal choices change with the music notes and register changes. The toms follow the riff's ascending or descending direction.
M.Mangini 58 years old when he played this. And still one the best drummer in the world 🔥🔥😎😎🔥🔥
I concur.
Great sounding kit
Next Mike Mangini Outcry Replay 🤘
Yeah x2
Yeah x3 🤘🏾🤣
Yeah x4
YEAAAH.
Anything from ADTOE... The mix may not be the best one for the drums but I love that album so much
The following is not a Mike V Mike statement, but videos like this are what everyone loved about Portnoy and the drumcam videos he produced. Even better here, Mangini has done it for free!
I'd rather pay to get videos of all songs than having a few for free though. This is a major cocktease.
@@j.d.7208 I think you misunderstood me. I really want videos, and I'm not complaining that they're free. I'm saying I would be willing to pay to see more videos, because now they are rarely uploaded.
@@Paaraadox my bad
Absolutely! Part of why it sucks that MP is gone is the behind the scenes content is gone
Yeah but Mike M is playing Mike P parts both left handed and right handed better than Mike P. Kind of says a lot right there
Kit sounds absolutely awesome.
that snare sound is larger than life!
I used to have rehearsal space next to yours in S. Florida in the early 90s. I'm a guitarist, we used to hang and chat back then. I used to sit an listen to you rehears for the V. gig. I just gotta say.. that was mind blowing. Your mechanics are unsurpassed. I've always admired you Mike. Peace.
That is the coolest most symmetrical thing I have ever seen
Wow just wow. Trying to grab my jaw from the floor
That's funny, cuz it was the HOTTEST, most ASYMMETRICAL thing that _I_ have ever seen...
Not quite the toms are slightly different sizes
Wow wow wow Mr. Mangini! Nothing more to say, just wait for the next. “Lost not forgotten” please!
We are not Worthy 🙏
Still #1 on my list 💯🤘
Thanks Mike 🤓❣️
Thank you very much professor for upload this masterpiece.
There is only one professor in drumming...and he passed away January 7, 2020.
@@JackHowlandyeah Neil was a legendary drummer, you should check one of his video and comment about how greatest he was. But on the other hand, mike had a remarkable carrear as profesor in berkeley college, also his continuos contribution with personal classes and session. If you are a real drummer you would know about what I am talking about.
@@JackHowland
Mangini was an actual professor at Berkeley
NP just had the nickname
@@aarondiaz1433 fellas, I know he's an actual professor (and legend). It was a joke...
Super entertaining. I saw Untethered Angel live twice and it was always a pure joy to watch Mike playing it. Although I am not a drummer (bassist here), I found myself watching Mike playing most of the time during the gig.
That drum kit looks incredible
When a drum kit offers you more choices than an Airbus A380 cockpit. Holy smokes!
We want more of these. PERIOD.
The note placement really shows how he crafted the parts! He didn't just throw stuff at the wall to see what stuck. Mike is a phenomenal teacher too. One of the best!
Nothing makes me click on a video faster than seeing a professional such as Mike at work🤘🤘👍
I just love how you go from performing like a mad man to immediately becoming calm at the end. It really makes people understand the energies involved in a live performance of any song
even as a drummer, i get bored listening to drum parts without the music. what's amazing about mike is, that's never the case with him for me. his absurd technical ability and complex musicality is always just pure joy to watch and listen to. you NEED to have a better taste in music to understand and enjoy his music, he's straight out incredible and motivational. thanks for all the amazing songs you have created and will create in the future.
one thing.. MM is a monster thats a give... but the above rack seems more for show than functional. for me anyways ive tried it and its not easy at all!!
more of this, please
A drummer who I could always get inspired from!Thank you Maestro!
Glad that the "Lady in blue" is back in the studio... 🤩🤟🏼 Love and support for you, Mike!
As someone who watched pretty much every MM video in existence, I am still impressed with how easy he makes this song look. You can never know how difficult anything he plays is until you try to play it and you realize your body has to be perfectly in tune with itself to make it sound decent. Mangini's playing is pure quality.
rudiments, rudiments, rudiments; practice, practice, practice. And smarts.
Mike is the quintessential professional drummer.
I joined a new band where I get to play some adventurous parts.
One of which has me following the lead guitar at the conclusion of the solo. I do a sextuplet run starting from the 12" tom, to the snare, to the 14" floor tom, to the 10" rack tom. It exposed the lack of conditioning to my abdominal core. I had to build up the strength to execute that part effectively. It also has me questioning further use of my Roc N Soc Nitro Throne, because it easily swivels from side to side, requiring even more muscular assistance from the core.
Later in thay song is another sextuplet fill where I'm hitting my ride cymbal bell on the second set. Getting my arm to go back and forth between my second rack tom and the ride bell took some getting used to as well.
Mike obviously has all this down to a T! But I've honestly been coasting the past few years.
This is literally pretty simple and straightforward
@scylla4342 the point is that it is harder to make it sound good no matter how simple you think it is because every note must be played with very precise touch, technique and consistency, on top of ensuring every part of your body is aware and in tune with every movement to ensure that sound and also avoid long term injury. This is just a small example. Look at Mangini's entire drumming career and you'll know it's not that simple.
@@Proghead88 well after all his drum tracks on dream theater are already simple so he don’t need to simplify most of his-hats/splashes/cymbals grooves from the prior drummer on stage
"This isn't perfect. It's close". If this isn't perfect, I don't know what is. Those toms sound perfect to me also. 👌🤘
Get this! One time, years ago, I seen a drummer who was a beast behind a 5 piece drum set and only had 3 cymbals! He made those drums sound like he had a massive drum kit with 50 cymbals.
You are not from this world!!! So many details here and there that are passed by with the band's music... so amazed by your unique skills!!! if i could play 10% of what you do... my drumming would be soooo better! I know you are slammed by classes and DT15's songs learning... but please, more of this videos!
It's always a delight to see and hear you playing, Mike!
Please upload more of these, if you can.
Wonderful work!
He just plays it so precise and accurate! Really love this guy!
MR MANGINI, SUPERB AS ALWAYS, CHEERS FROM MEXICO!!!!
As always, nothing but pure pleasure watching and hearing you play drums at that level…much respect Mr. Mangini
It is amazing the sound that you can produce out of the kit! Amazing!
love the energy!!! brilliant song and brilliant playing
Mike is one of the most amazing percussionist of modern times. By far not given more recognition than he’s had. I’ve seen him multiple time and it was absolutely riveting.
I have watched this masterpiece maybe a hundred times... PLEASE more videos like this, Mr. Mangini!! I can't get enough of this amazing setup and the artist who can create unfathomable fills with it. Oh, that would be a good name for a book or video: "Unfathomable Fills with Mike Mangini!"
Awesome as usual,Mike!
Buddy,Weckl,Donati and Mangini....My favorite percussionists of all time...
that camera view from above is, most decidedly, the best one I've seen so far on YT as far as drumming is concerned. Thank you!
I love the footage, the edition and all, please do more videos like that, you are one of the most inspiring and smart drummers, keep it up Man-Genius
Amazing!!
Love this format!
Thanks, Mike!!!
The fill at 1:02 doesn't get enough love. It's relatively simple but fits what is going on with the rest of the music so, so well.
Wow..too much Awesomeness..the great Mike Mangini..truly Master..want more!
I saw the post notification and quickly went to get the headphones! Extreme audio and video quality, not to mention the Magini mastery! Greeeeeat!!!
Master Mangini ! The best proof of hardwork. Outstanding Mike. Great performance. 👍
Mike... I just got home after 4 hellacious 12 hour shifts in the ICU. I'm a Critical Care Respiratory Therapist... THANKS for being an AMAZING drummer and willing to share these type of videos with us. Watching you, a MASTER of your trade, play songs I love is a tremendous way to unwind after well being surrounded by patients on death's door due to COVID and comorbidities.
I raise a glass brother!! CHEERS.
We need more something like this, please
More Cowbell !!!
I love MM's parts. Loaded with feel and awesome phrasing.
Thank you Sifu. Just amazing demonstration.
Just wow. Thanks Mike for your time and talen! I was smiling from start to finish.
Pure awesomeness!!! That was one thing I wished the video of the song had was a better view of you playing! Thank you for giving us that sir👏
That fill at 3:51 was one of the most genius fills I've ever seen! It had so many layers to it! 16th note rhythm, accents in the toms on the dotted eighth notes, while doing Paradiddles on the toms. Bravo sir!
You should get out more often..
it's a good fill but I wouldn't call it genius. It's triplets
3:51 just made my day!
Simply perfect! send more videos like this Mike please! M.M.M.M. Mike Mangini Master Monster 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
He's the next level. Machines will never be able to match
It's incredible that I can hear the whole song in my head... DT is this good
Right?
It helps that it can be faintly heard in the background.
@@JerridFoiles really??? 😂 then my tinitus took the best of me
@@MauricioMagaldi sorry to hear that you have tinnitus. Hope you get better soon.
@@EetFuk8 thanks! that's kind of you. I've had it for way over 20 years, so it's not going away anytime soon. it did not worsen, so that's good news!
OMG! The tone sounds very amazing!! 😳
A magic gift, thank you Mike
Mike- love your work, chops, talent, and YOU putting this out for the rest of us to enjoy. THANKS!!!
0:25 - I'm confident I can play here the first 20 seconds of this track. 💪
😂😂😂
You are such a lord of drummer... lol
I see what you did there
Awesome Mike! Love this track, and can't wait for the next album!
Absolutely phenomenon. 🔥🔥💯 thank you Mike Mangini for sharing 🙏 ❤
Metal in complete harmony. Outstanding job Mr Mangini!
With a song like this, the best any human can possibly do is get it close. Eventually variance will take over, one or two hits will be weaker or stronger, and something will be slightly out if you're under a microscope. Doing things at the degree of precision that Mangini does is already insane.
What's insane is he'll play it beat for beat, stroke for stroke every single time.
Thanks Mike for posting this! Love the playing, editing and camera work. Can't wait for more videos and DT15!
Kick ass job! Love the video of isolated drums. I hope you have time to do more of these. This is amazing for drummers to see!
Incredible Mike 🤘🏻 can’t wait to see you guys again 🤘🏻
More drum play throughs Mike you king 🤘
His timing is incredible and he makes them fills look effortless!
What a delight it is to listen to this with headphones over and over again.
Very inspiring and great perspectives to learn!
Amazing stuff Mr Mangini!!
Hope to see you at JPGU 3.0! 💪🏻😎🥃
I'll be there too!!!!
Amazing video!
Apart from the brilliant performance, I really appreciate the nice lighting. It gives the whole video such a nice mood, plus the blue LED light strips really compliment the blue drum shells 😁
Just unbelievable! Amazing!
Mike, BRAVO! Fantastic groove & control, Drums sound great!
Dude, this is so ENJOYABLE to watch... Full technique, but looks so effortless.
Bravo drum master BRAVO 👏. I can honestly say you sir are on of a kind. Haven’t seen anyone do left/right handed stick work so flawlessly as you do. A pure master of this craft. Again Bravo to you Mike.
I just love how the drums not only drive the rhythm in this, it is actually part of the song's harmony/melody. Truly awesome stuff!
@@Alfred_-vp9ys true I'll take that. It's not Bozzio level yet. :D
Absolutely amazing ! gotta be one of the worlds best! fantastic to watch
Just a huge fan… thank you Mr. Mangini.
Wow!!! Thanks, Mike. This what we need
Awesome!!!!
Mike Mangini, still phenomenal!! I'll never forget back in the days of the Music Complex, I'm just this broke ass drummer with a pieced together kit and my 14" tom kept falling on my kick because the mount was trash.
One afternoon, I'm just chilling in room 414 when I hear a loud crash in the hall. I come out and see a cart loaded pretty much to the ceiling with drum cases and all, some of which are on the floor now. I'm like " You good, man?" When Mike pops his head out from behind the cart with a huge smile.
"I think I could use a hand." HA
I didn't even know who you were at the time, I ended up helping you out with an instructional video you had to shoot at the studio a few days later and you hooked me up with the part for my tom to stop denting my kick!! I'm pretty sure my jaw was on the floor the entire time at the studio!!
I've never forgotten that. I'm 45 now and just bought my 8 year old son an Alesis Nitro set to get him started. (I dusted off my cobwebs and ripped out Master of Puppets and I've still got it!)
Rock on!!
So inspiring Mike. Thank you for being you man.
I keep wondering about the guys who hit the dislike button in such videos... flawless performance. Let us have some more.
There's a name for those people. Idiots. 🤷🏻♂️
Zéro dynamics, zéro feeling, sounds like any machine with switched off velocity, that's why. The guy is wasting all his talent to sound like a robot
@@knarfreinuof5147 It’s your opinion, and let’s not make a discussion out of this. I would somehow understand your point, if I only knew MM’s work on DT. If you’d follow is work since95, watch his grid dvd, or have a couple of lessons with him, you might have another opinion regarding feeling and dynamics. What the music demands is not what one is or can do. IMO. 👍🏼 cheers.
Listen to his work with annihilator!! The man is fantastic
@@knarfreinuof5147 wasting all his talent? How is playing in dream theater “ wasting his talent” I’d say your wasting your time spewing hate!
Grande Mike Mangini
Monstro demais!!!
That is awesome Mike! I really do hope you do more of these!
Hell yessss! Mike, your drumming skills and passion for the instrument is inspiring! Awesomeness!
Amazing, Mike!! I am a guitar player but I love drums too, I purchased the wicked piston drumsticks because of you.
Finally !!!!!!!! You should do this more often!!!!!
Brilliant performance, one of my favourite recent DT songs. Recently bought the vinyl and listen to it nonstop! Awesome, Mike!
Mangini♥당신은 최고의 Drummer입니다~! ^0^ 항상 늘.. 변함없이 응원하고 있어요!! 한국의 K-POP Composer 정연우가 남겨요-*
Anyone else besides me been on a Mangini binge lately? Definitely in the echelons of best of all time.
So enjoyable watching this master play. 2:40 - 2:50 is just beautiful. 🔥❤
He has the best flow of any rock drummer I can think of. I know he's more than that, but he hits the drums with the most ferocity you could have while still sounding smooth as fuck when he needs to. His body movements are a work of art in themselves ☺
Whole different level of talent. Love it!
Sweet... I'm impressed with the originality! Totally mind blown.
The little ghost notes in the section starting at 3:58, the fills, the drum tone... So good! Really nice video!
Seriously though who the hell would dislike this? This is awesome. More more more please!
Fantastic! Thank you for sharing this with us!
Love the precision, so clean, so good!
Terry Bozzio like roto kit at the beachcomber on Wollaston Beach Quincy Mass. It's the first time I saw Mike play as my local band opened for The Rick Berlin Band.
That night changed my drumming life back in the early 90's. Before that, Dave Dicenso was and still is my drumming Yogi.
This freak is muh #2.
Awesome vid. Glad to still see the zbt still in the setup!
This is one of the only drum play throughs i've seen in the metal scene lately where you can hear the actual real drum sounds and the room without heavy editing and sample replacement. Even modern bands do alot of editing with their drum audio. You can tell this was pretty raw and real.
Epic! Great to be able to see/hear Mike do his thing up close.👊
I know making and editing a drumcam means a lot of work, but this is so cool that I hope you will post more videos soon.
Rock on!
He can pay anyone to edit lol
@@BreakingChords He does that himself.
