    What about the Sony 20mm f1.8 G Lens?

    • @wadefrench9254
      @wadefrench9254 3 роки тому +2

      I was wondering the same thing! The 20mm is even newer and has the Dual XD Linear Motor autofocus system which I think is supposed to be even better than the system in the 24. I wonder if the 20 mm is just a little too wide for Matt. I am seriously considering buying one of these two lenses so I would be interested in any input between the 20 mm and 24 mm.

    Sigma released a 35 1.2 with an aperture ring too, but you can move it so easily that I am sure for the update version it'll have a locking mechanism like my old AF-D Nikkor lenses did. Still this Sony 24 1.4 is a no brainer since this is the focal length for gimbal use and having reliable autofocus it's crucial for it. Great review Matt.

    Love this lens as well, Matt! Question for you about the AF - have you encountered any pulsing effects that many have with the Sony autofocus? I've seen that many have this issue, including myself. The 24mm seems better than the 50mm, but I feel like every now and then I still find some issues. Do you have any thoughts on this? It seems like based on this video you've had pretty minimal issues, so I'm trying to find your secret (settings) that I could replicate to resolve this problem!

    Anyone who wants to buy the Sigma: if you care about the autofocus - don’t buy it. It hunts for focus a lot of the times. I use Sony 24, f/1.4 for that reason. It stays in focus no matter what. I know some filmmakers might not care about AF, but it’s nice to have it from time to time. And once you see how Sony 24mm 1.4 performs in terms of autofocus - you will care.

    Sony lists this lens as "linear" MF, but while it's close, I'm not seeing it being linear. I'm getting wander in focus points when pulling focus depending on the speed that I rack. I thought I had issues with my puller, but my other lenses were working fine. When pulling focus back and forth between two subjects during a documentary shoot, I was losing my A and B's so I decided to test the lens out on the bench (two objects about 3 feet apart) and sure enough, depending on the speed I will lose the stop points. It seems like when I throw fast one way and slow back the other way, is when the major wander happens, but there's slight wander no matter what (and with shallow DoF that's a killer). I cannot duplicate this on the 35mm G, 20mm G, the 70-200mm GM or the 70-200mm F/4 which are all linear lenses (with linear motors, ironically)- those lenses work perfectly and hold A and B points perfectly. The 24GM lists that it actually has a DDSSM motor, not the typical Linear motors that all the linear focus lenses have (to include the new 50 GM and 35 GM) and wondering if I either have a bad copy, or did Sony "try" to make this lens a linear manual focus lens as best they could so they could label it that way, but in real world applications, it's still not quite linear???
