I about SNAPPED my neck when you said "this is the first lens review I've made." That's.....that's impossible for me to believe. This is not only the best review of THIS lens, it's one of the best lens reviews period. Major, major props. 👍
This review was very poggers Matt. I appreciate you talking about your experience with other lenses and justifying certain things and really exploring every inch of the lens with how each thing functions.
I was wondering the same thing! The 20mm is even newer and has the Dual XD Linear Motor autofocus system which I think is supposed to be even better than the system in the 24. I wonder if the 20 mm is just a little too wide for Matt. I am seriously considering buying one of these two lenses so I would be interested in any input between the 20 mm and 24 mm.
@@ericsimmons401 The 20 mm is more like $550 cheaper, but it's significant. Then again, the 24 mm is older so you can find some used copies and maybe save a little there. Still the more expensive lens though.
This review just made me buy the lens for my new a7sIII. It’s dark outside right now over here in Norway, but I’ve already tried shooting a bit - and it looks beautiful. Can’t wait until tomorrow, with some light and NDs!
I bought this lens! It’s beautiful. Very versatile and the bokeh is great. It’s wide enough to use as an all rounder. We just need to carry a 50 mm and 85 mm to get excellent shots. Telephoto for zooming in.
Great review. Thanks a lot. One thing I would love to have seen compared: focus breathing. When doing medium or close shots with a 24mm and a rack focus, little to no breathing is important...
Densely-packed knowledge transfer that kept my interest. I applaud your choice to educate viewers about WHY being able to smoothly adjust exposure could be important to filmmakers - instead of simply parroting the speeds & feeds like most reviewers have begun doing. I recommend Batis 25mm or Batis 18mm for gimbal. Batis series is built like a tank and super fast too. I have never changed the Batis on my gimbal since 3 years.
That's was my first, and dreamed, sony lens when I migrate for sony system. It's really difficult to change this lens, on my a7 III it fits so greatful that is really difficult to peak another one. My second choice was the sony 85mm 1.8 and now I'm looking for some middle range around 50mm prime lens. Would you recomend go to 55mm Zeiss, or something better that will be a best 'investment'?
Love this lens as well, Matt! Question for you about the AF - have you encountered any pulsing effects that many have with the Sony autofocus? I've seen that many have this issue, including myself. The 24mm seems better than the 50mm, but I feel like every now and then I still find some issues. Do you have any thoughts on this? It seems like based on this video you've had pretty minimal issues, so I'm trying to find your secret (settings) that I could replicate to resolve this problem!
How can you not talk about whether this lens focus breathes or not? I loved the review, but a huge omission to not let us know how it does with focus breathing for video? Or did I miss you talking about that..?
My feedback to this video is show more examples of video shooting (day, evening, night) and auto focus situations etc. I didn't learn anything new in this video that I learned from a photography review of this lens.
Very nice review Matt! Only additional bonus that would have been interesting to see if there were a few quick comparison shots showing the image quality/color/distortion/vignetting with the 3 lenses shooting the same scene
Great review Matt, just need to get one now, just one question, when filming whilst holding the camera can you get smooth footage with just the inbody stabilisation or do i need to invest in a gimbal
i just bouth a 35mm 1.4. but im i really tempted with this lense. is it too much difference in a 35 and a 24mm? worth it? maybe is the best for my gimbal. great video. cheers
Thanks for the review..I would like to see more about sigma 85mm f1.4 new edition for sony e-mount, because its focus is by wire too. It would be helpful to show us how manual focus stands for filmmakers and no one spoke about that untill now..
Matt would you consider the Sony FE 20mm f1.8 G if someone wanted a cheaper option in a similar focal range without sacrificing that delicious native autofocus? $1400 vs $850 is a good chunk of money.
Hi Matt, what autofocus settings do you recommend on a sony fx3 if you are filming large groups on a gimbal with a lot of motion and activity, dancing, etc. After reviewing my footage I’m noticing the shot goes in and out of focus and is really annoying. Should I just bump my f-stop up? It could be problematic in low light situations. Any help would be much appreciated thanks!
Great video, hey question? on your a7!!! in picture profile 7 slog2, does your iso starts at 800? and if so how do you keep from blown out when shooting out doors?
Hey Matt, just wanna say. I appreciate you making this video. I've been looking around for lenses for my Sony A7s3. This video is exactly what I needed! I think more reviews on Lenses would be great!!!
Hello Matt, I bought mine today. It is such a fantastic lens. What I noticed: wide open on a Sony A1, there are green fringes around the out of focus edges. Today the sunlight was very harsh, but I belive, this is not so well controlled. How is your Experience? Kind Regads from Germany, Dieter
This review was the best one I’ve seen yet on this lens. I’m contemplating on buying it but also trying to save for a house. Ahhh first world problems.
Sigma released a 35 1.2 with an aperture ring too, but you can move it so easily that I am sure for the update version it'll have a locking mechanism like my old AF-D Nikkor lenses did. Still this Sony 24 1.4 is a no brainer since this is the focal length for gimbal use and having reliable autofocus it's crucial for it. Great review Matt.
A naive question, can i put variable ND filter on it? Which one do you recommend? By the way, after watching this video, I will definitely buy it :) many thanks.
can you put on your kit what shoulder bag you are using? i saw that during outdoor shooting you have a shoulder bag. i need one to store lenses, drone and batterys while traveling with the bride & groom without the need to carry my big bag
Yes, maybe Sigma is cheapper, but the sigma 24 has loud autofocus on continous mode. At least on the Nikon it is. Is it different for Sony? Sony 24 has a silent AF so this is an undoubted advantage.
I got a A7 Mk1 with no ibis and I already got FE 50 F1.8 so i want to lens with good autofocus? I thinking of getting FE 24mm F1.4 GM or FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM vs FE 20mm F1.8 and next year I want to travel to Japan? I am planning to get a new A7 camera in 2023. I like to take picture of airplane, Landscape, Astro, Street photography and travel?
do you have a comparison Sony 24mm 1.4 GM to Sony 24mm F2.8 G? and if you were to buy one to use with a gimble would you buy the 1.4 or save and go with 2.8?
Great Video Matt! I’ve ordered my Sony A7S iii for my new Gimbal setup and the Sony GM 24mm will be my first lens. Have any recommendations for a great quality ND filter and pro-most for this lens?

Glad someone else asked! I was just about to do the same. I have the 20mm and love it, but I would love to see a comparison.
24 1.4 is by far my favorite focal length. It’s so incredibly versatile!

I use the G 20mm 1.8. When using active stabilization, the lens is basically 24mm but when I don't it's wider at 20mm. Best of both worlds.

Batis series is built like a tank and super fast too.
I have never changed the Batis on my gimbal since 3 years.
Sonys are faster even the 20mm 1.8 is better
They also have a rubber gasket
