    That Sigma is a fantastic deal and will definitely help a lot of photographers by adding it to their kit. I love your videos! The way that you all compare things is top quality and the information you give is ace and is explained in the most easiest and professional way that I've seen. Cheers!

    Chris and Jordan just released their review of the 20 mm. As always, they do a nice job, but their review was shot on the Sigma body and there was no direct comparison to the Sony lens beyond a mention. Can’t wait for the full Northrup review in comparison to the 1.8 Sony shot on a Sony body. T&C really excel at providing the direct comparisons.

    Why are the sharpness tests always conducted wide open? I would like to see some stopped down comparisons too, especially for a wide lens that will most probably used for landscapes too.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  2 роки тому +11

      Sharpness differences are greatest wide-open. A lens that is sharper wide-open is also sharper shut down, but that difference is less and less. Eventually diffraction is such a huge factor that lens sharpness doesn't matter much at all.

      @@TonyAndChelsea Sure but it would have been nice to see at f/2 as well. For ex, the CA is quite nasty on both (but even worse on the Sigma wide open) and I know it looks fine on the Sony at f/2, so I was wondering how it looked on the Sigma at f/2.

      Christopher Frost looks at sharpness as you stop down, as well as things like coma smear, flaring, and a bunch of other technical tests. He is another good one to follow.

    • @Alan-ww8vi
      @Alan-ww8vi 2 роки тому

      @@TonyAndChelsea That's true, although some of the sharpness differences on the edges could be down to field curvature, so I think some stopped down tests would help eliminate that and give a better idea of edge sharpness. For us landscape people who want edge to edge sharpness anyway.

    I'm new to photography and am looking for the right lens to take great photos in Hawaii this summer with the kids. I have a Sony a6400 (which I currently use for podcasting). This review has helped me greatly. Would you suggest the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 or the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 for our trip to Hawaii (outdoor photos, people moving, portraits of the family in action, and landscape/sunrises/sunsets)? Thank you for your review and feedback!

    This comparison only makes sense if you're buying either new. On the used market right now, they are comparable in price (mostly because the Sony is older). The Sony is almost a no brainer on the used market.

    Two Notes: First of all, the Sony seems to be a hair 'wider' than the Sigma's 24mm; it's definitely noticeable at 4:18 in the mannequin backlighting test.... Also, only (certain) Sony native lenses will allow you to achieve the highest frame rate capture of 30 fps on the A1, so if you must have the highest rate possible, go native... Either way, the Sigma looks like an outstanding release.

    • @wrobi2267
      @wrobi2267 2 роки тому

      30fps only with Sony native lens? Is it a fact or rumors only. I never saw a side by side comparison. That would be interesting.

  • @PhilThach

    Very nicely done and thorough. Thank you! I must say, the 22-pointed stars are, for me, a negative for both of these lenses (more is NOT better). I'm buying a super inexpensive Laowa 12-24 lens mainly for its 5 straight bladed aperture. 10 well-defined star points for the win! Oh, and the 77mm filter on a 12mm full-frame ultra-wide is nice too. It's slow though so I'll be up on a tripod with that lens and there will be no astrophotography. I know, I'm comparing apples to oranges here but if your viewer is mainly interested in beautiful starbursts, there are better choices out there for less. It would be interesting to see how the upcoming budget Canon RF 24mm 1.8 fares against these two. Thanks again!

    • @FrankyFeedler
      @FrankyFeedler 2 роки тому

      Amen!! Why can't there at least be an even number of aperture blades to reduce the amount of star points and generally make it look better? What is the tradeoff? I always reach for more classic lens designs if I want to shoot a good starburst. Voigtlander 15mm, Loxia 21/25, etc.
      But why can't these super expensive lenses have 10 blades? Bokeh would be almost just as smooth but starbursts 100 times better. Would love to know the reason.

    I just worry, like you said, it’s a similar range as a smart phone. If I spend extra money to get the Sony lens, it might give me that much more of an edge, especially as new smart phones come out in the next year or two where they keep increasing the quality on it. I want this to be worthwhile and look better than my iPhone 13 Pro, I’m currently having depth of field problems, so I’m assuming this will give me a little more control over the focus of my objects. By the way, will this distort objects that are close up in front of the camera? My iPhone doesn’t have that problem.

    I've watched 3 or 4 reviews of this lens and I suspect there is a sample variation problem here. Your reivews is the only that shows this lens is competing with Sony GM while all others seem to experience really bad wide open performance that made me question why did sigma went backwards with DG DN version compared to the old DSLR counterpart.

    Listening to your mellifluous voices as I was going to sleep after a very long day of work and more work, and -- what did I just hear Chelsea say? "Program a bull-butt-in" What had I just heard? My wandering mind entertained the amusing thought of a bull, standing ready to rudely interrupt a scene on -demand, which made total sense to my half-asleep brain. I then awakened fully and and restarted the video, and immediately was able to re-interpret the words Chelsea said correctly. The best part? I then realized that Chelsea *had*, in effect, programmed a bull butt-in into my drifting-off-to-sleep thoughts. Anyway, appreciate the review as always, and my now fully awake brain now appreciates knowing that I have a viable alternative to the 24 GM that can save me $500. Now I'll turn the ipad off and return to sleep to see if a bull will be interrupting any of my dreams. Still wondering if that bird's family is doing okay.

    I don't see the point of your astro test for sharpness as the stars aren't dots but trails as you took a too long exposure ...

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  2 роки тому

      It's a tough compromise. If I reduce the shutter speed I also increase the noise which also makes it harder to assess sharpness. Nonetheless star trails still reveal sharpness and coma because the stars just move in a line.
