Best tip is not let the horizon line cut through face. Second is negative space above subject. Third, keep face in center of frame to reduce distortion and just crop for close ups. Awesome video!
Great tips and I love how you break down your decisions. Shooting with a wide is a real skill and you are great at it! The reason that there is so much less distortion on the longer edges is because the lens is round and would naturally project that shape but is being cropped by your sensor. The top and bottom of a landscape orientation are being cut off closer to the middle so we don’t see the actual edges as much. It’s also probably worth mentioning to people that shooting with a wide lens from a lower angle can be nice when your model is very thin but if your model is curvy, or on the rounder side, that would be exaggerated some.
OMG your comment about distortion in portrait vs. landscape orientation was such a hidden gem! I hadn't really considered until you pointed that out, but ALL lenses are projecting light onto a circular plane - it's just that film negatives and sensors are cropped rectangularly - so of *course* you wouldn't have as much distortion at the top (and bottom) of a landscape shot! 🤯
Yeah Serena was amazing, when you have someone confident in front of camera it means you can both concentrate on what you're good at and just be creative. My favourite kind of shoots 🙏
Thank you for continuing to provide actual value on UA-cam... it is very much appreciated! Most creators with your sub count become either stale or start to mail it in. When it comes to learning to take better photos, you've become one of my go-to's.
24mm is actually such a wonderful lens! It was my very first lens and although it was tricky to do proper portraits I like how you can capture beautiful sceneries with it 😍
I agree! A shoot like this makes me want to use it more often, it was really fun getting creative with the location and posing, it makes you think a little differently to traditional portrait lenses 😄
Love these tips, I just switched over to full frame with the Sony a7 IV and my first lens is the 24mm GM. I travel and like to shoot street/landscapes so its the perfect prime for me. Never really thought of it as a portrait but your results are inspiration. Also, the leading lines fence comp was my favorite.
Thanks so much for watching!! If you like wide angle portraits you can also check out my 35mm composition tips here: ua-cam.com/video/4cTwmvUTxPw/v-deo.html ⭐️
Julia do you never shoot male models ? btw it was a super useful video .. leading line of the stairs and fence directed towards the eye was my favourite one ♥️
hi julia, plzz make ur videos in 2:1/18:9 aspect ratio, because now a days it's very common in all smartphones, most of user having android phones with 19.5:9 aspect ratio screen, 2:1/18:9 aspect ratio videos are looks bigger on screen & looks awesome, u can also see another video s related why we create video's in 2:1 aspect ratios. So, please implement this my above request because iam big fan of you, love u so much..
The only lens that I owned from December 2019-March 2021 was 24mm 2.8 it was the best choice and challenge I ever did... You move more, and you learn how everything works you understand and appreciate what you have. Now I have Sony camera with sigma 24-70 I don't think of having a second lens at least for a year or more. I have done already some shootings and I'm impressed with the results I get from it. Ps your videos are really helpful I like how good you are at directing models what pose to get and stuff and I like that you don't encourage people into getting in new cameras, lenses.
Hey Julia ... another show stopper of a video ... love the leading lines in the fence, those were my fav ...great tip to stay away from the edges to avoid unflattering distortions
Distortion can be a problem with wide angles, but if I'm careful to keep the camera level I can get a closeup of the subject with a panoramic background. Still, I very seldom us a wide angle for portraits unless I want a particular emphasis. This is a good video on wide angle portraiture. I agree with everything you're saying. My go to lens is the Nikon 24-120 mm f/4 which covers the closeup head shots too.
These are my favorite videos that you make. I learn so much! I don’t even own a single camera🤣🤣 my fave tip is using the negative space, it looks beautiful.
Great tips! Thought I was the only one that preferred to leave negative space when shooting portrait! Makes it much easier to crop for instagram as well!
Wow! Absolutely love these photo tips for the 24mm focal length! I bought a the a7c and the 24mm gm a couple of months ago to document the birth of our firstborn child (who turned 3 weeks old today). I choosed the 24mm to have 1 lens for both video and photo. However, I’ve been struggling a bit with the photo part, gotten the feeling I should have gone for the 35mm instead. But thanks for this inspiration! Feels like I would stick with the 24mm, develop my photo skills, and then go for a 50mm or 85mm once our child has grown a bit bigger! Thanks again! Great channel!! 😊
Wonderful as usual! Thanks for pointing out lining up the model’s limbs with the leading lines. Been working a lot on creating more dynamic shapes and lines through posing!
Many thanks to everyone involved for the helpful video. I like how you fade in the details and also explain what is important when photographing and posing the model.
Julia you could in your reviews show the camera with the lens, because this days all lenses and bodys are amazing, maybe ergonomics and size(and price hehehe) makes a big difference. Is good to see how its fits in your hands and overrall size with the body
Thanks for this! The photos are great - the model looks great and worked so well with you and the outfit worked well with the mood! I have an APS-C system 16mm lens and love it so I was looking to see what a good portrait artist would choose to do with it.
Thanks for the video! You really had such good understanding of the perspective of different focal lengths, and how the subject plays a role in the composition. Learnt a lot!
Considering I only have a 12-24 lens and a 200-600, this video was greatly appreciated! Thanks for the tips. I’ll have to rewatch this video a couple times and try them all out.
Great video! I recently bought the Batis 25/f2 and think it will be great for environmental portraits. I'm about to go to Iceland with some friends and was debating about taking this lens...but you just convinced me I need to throw it in my bag!
The vibe from your 24 lens is so staggering! It's like a amplifier of emotion from the model and feeling of the environment! Never thought 24 lens could have such amazing result! Thank you Julia!
it makes total sense that horinzontally the distortion is less... because the lens is round. First time I think of that. BTW, amazing video and photos!!
Wonderful video and tips. You are excellent photographer & editor. Tips are helpful. Sony SOOC color & skintone is far from good, but you make them look super nice from editing.
Hi Julia! i always watch your videos! Please do more 24mm photoshoot soon! Love this video! Love the poses and your tips! Would love to know more how u maximize the use of this lens
Thank you Julia! Have you used crop mode on your 24mm with your a7iv to have a 35mm equivalent or you prefer changing lens to your favorite 35mm 1.4gm? Anyway I'm excited to see your video!
thank you for the tips. coming from tight lenses, its kinda hard to compose with 24, definitely going to try your tips. also what is the device with antennas mounted on your camera?
Hello and thank you very much for this Video and these beautiful Photos! I thought there would be more deformations for Portraits at 24 mm, but obviously it seems to me that there are none or very few, no ??? I have a Canon RP and the Canon RF 50 f1.8 stm for Portraits, and I'm thinking of buying the new Canon RF 24 mm f1.8 Macro stm for Landscapes, but then I might be able to do Portraits with it this 24 mm also what do you think ? Thank you in advance for your answers, Sincerely, Philgood...
I think it was very helpful that you shared the tip about leaving a bunch of negative space. I never thought about the distortion around the edges of the frame 😱. I love the shots on the steps and the ones on the iron gate. You did a great job shooting on such a wide lens. I feel like i would mostly use a lens that wide for landscape photography and while traveling 😍.
Amazing video Julia, thank you so much I really like those tips! I'm usually using 135mm focal length and quite hesitant towards wide angles but I bought 24-105mm Sony lens as a backup all-around, looking forward to have some fun and shoot some more on 24mm length of it! 😊❤️
Thanks so much! As a portrait photographer it's a good idea to have the 24mm on a zoom lens instead. I personally don't use 24 that often so I don't have one in my kit yet, but I also was considering getting a zoom that can go to 24.
Really practical and full of gems! Thanks Julia! Random question: I noticed you usually kept the same shutter speed at 1/200 (maybe you changed it and I missed it). Was that for any specific reason? Id imagine you could have gone 1/100 and still negated hand shake but double your light and maybe lower iso? Either way noise wasn’t an issue and the photos are great, just curious :) thanks!
Portraits on a 24mm, wow! 😀 Just a quick question though- Why don't you use your A7C as much you use your A7iii for the shoots. Any particular shortcomings?
How about 28mm for portraits? I am considering buying a Leica Q2 for a general purpose camera, but I worry about the distortion. For the head shots, I will keep my fujifilm XT3 for it. I am not a professional photographer. Thanks for the video.
Hello! I'm a guitarist who will be shooting in a small space with a green screen. So I will need to get me & the guitar in the whole shot from about 4 feet away. I just ordered this lens your using. I'm just hoping I made the right decision for my situation? Thanks so much!
thx Julia!I don’t know why….even though u said the widest focal length is 35mm for u, but I prefer ur 24mm footage over the 35mm. Haha! Anyway Love ur photos!
Best tip is not let the horizon line cut through face. Second is negative space above subject. Third, keep face in center of frame to reduce distortion and just crop for close ups. Awesome video!
Thank you, I appreciate it 😄
FAVE TIP: the eyes and leg/arm following leading lines! Never heard you say that one before, what a great tip
Thank you, I thought that one was a goodie too ;)
Great tips and I love how you break down your decisions. Shooting with a wide is a real skill and you are great at it! Watched this again after a few years. Still the best 24mm portrait video on UA-cam 👌
Working with actual models is so nice, it makes the work flow so smooth

Awesome video. What do you think about these two combos: 35 + 85 or 24 + 50 + 105? For different portraits and travel🙏🏻
She makes for a phenomenal model. On point with the posing.
