The crop mode can get you a little more distance from your subject which might sometimes be advantageous and even 26 or even 10mp is enough for sharp 8x10 or even larger printed pictures on full farme.
i did compare the 24gm in crop with 35 1.8 sony and GN is actually lot better so Ive sold the 35 and Im only usin 24 as 24 and as 37ish lens. Totally happy with it.

I think if you stop the 35mm to f2 and not f1.8 it might be the same (f/1.4x1.5 = f2.1) so the 24GM would give an equivalent field of view and aperture of a 36mm f/2.1
Thanks for this video! Literally answered my question to the T. 👊🏽 And Yesss!!! Let’s see a video for the 35mm to 52 in crop mode vs the native 50mm ! 😃
Hi Magic, nice video, thats why I bought the 24 mm1.4 for my A1. Can crop it to 35mm. I also do this with my 50mm 1.2 and use this as a 75 mm portrait lens.
Yes the 24mm has smaller bokeh balls in crop mode because it is still a 24mm pushing the background further away as oppose to to the higher magnification of the 35mm bringing the background closer to your subject. You can see it in your example images where the background distances are different even when the 24mm is cropped. Just the design differences of the glass to get their desired focal length 😉
Like James corectly said, it‘s not the f-stop wich makes the bokeh on the 35 smoother, it‘s the compression of the 35mm vs 24mm. It’s all about the physical focal length vs fake zoom. And it’s the reason why it is so difficult to make good super wide primes for MFT. I tried aps-c Fuji 56/1.2 wich „want‘s“ to be a 85/1.4....very good but not the same bokeh smoothness. Love your content, keep em coming and hope for this channel to grow fast
great video, I have a A7R4 and this is exactly the reason why I have the 24mm GM and did not bother to get a 35mm GM. Instead though, I use that money towards the new 50mm 1.2 GM :)
I use the 24gm in crop mode a fear bit! I've gotten use to the 24mm field of view so I usually choose that over the 35mm lens but at some cases it is more convenient to just use crop mode rather than start the hassle of changing lenses. In my A7R3's the 18mpx is plenty when keeping in mind how are the photos actually used. Ps. I think the bigger bokeh balls in 35mm is due to the lens compression.
Thanks for the comparison. Two great lenses. I the bokah balls are smaller for the 24mm do to perspective, ie. the background is being thrown further away. When cropping, you you essentially have the same wider angle of view, only cropped👍🏼
20, 35, 50, 135 are my focal lengths. I do agree with cropping the 24mm but i sold mine to replace it with the 20mm 1.8 for the minimum focusing distance and extra width. Great video as always magic
For video the aps-c mode is awesome as you don’t loose anything! With A7C crop gives 10mpx, which is not a lot, but definitely can be useful. Yeah, I’m hoping for camera with 30+ mpx too!
I have the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM which I often use on mine Sony A7RIV/A7RIVA Cameras in APSC mode, the Sony 35mm 1.4 GM are not one i want, I got the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical which are light, compact and built like a tank and the optical image quality are just as good as the Sony 35mm 1.4 GM, so a very easy choice for me, I do manual focusing 99.99% of the time !
Longer lenses have more background compression. Does the 24mm background compression change making it the same as the 35mm background compression when we make the APSC crop? Thanks
Hi, Very nice video . what about the distortion ? is the distotion controlled/minimised in crop mode? as the 35mm lens has less distotion compared to 24mm.
I have used the crop mode extensively on the 24 mm GM in some portrait sessions. The only major problem on the A7RIII is if you need to crop that image even more, then the file can get pretty small. As a result, I am moving to using my 24 mm for landscapes mostly and got the 35 mm GM for portrait sessions (great lens!). By the way, do you think it is worth the investment to switch to the A7RIV? Or just wait it out until an A7RV comes out? I can't afford the A1.
I believe DOFSimulator is correct. The DOF of the 24/1.4 in crop mode is about f/2.1. That's why at 7:30 the bokeh balls are bigger on the 35/1.4 stopped down to f/1.8 than they are on the 24/1.4 at f/1.4 in crop mode .
I wondered about that too f/2.1 and f/1.8 too, but as you can see 24 on crop looks exactly like 35/1.8. So the difference between 35/18 and 35GM at 1.8 is surprising, might be due to slight difference in the focal length? Maybe one is like shorter and second longer… not sure 🤷🏻♂️ The compression though should be the same for 35 on FF and 24 on crop.
@@MagicWeddingPhotographer I think it has to do with mechanical vignetting. Stopping a lens down reduces the effect; see cat eyes disappearing when slightly stopped down on some (or all?) lenses. With the vignetting gone, the circles appear larger than an equivalent lens wide open.
@@MagicWeddingPhotographer Indeed, I'm willing to bet it's due to the focal length on the label of a lens being an approximation. Makes no sense to release a 33.96 mm lens, even though that's what your optical formula has produced, for marketing reasons etc. Also consider the fact that the GM focus breathes, so it's probably exactly 35 mm at some point in its focus throw, but nowhere else :)
Gave up the 24mm for the 35mm. I miss it. For me the 24mm was much sharper and just had overall better quality photo. Soon will sell my 35 and get my 24 back.
Ah, I’m tempted to sell my 24mm for the 35mm, but will have to chip in some extra for it.. Maybe it’s not worth it? The 24mm is a killer lens after all
Thank you for this video. I just got my A7riv and the lenses I currently have are the 70-180 f2.8 tamron and an 85mm 1.8 tokina. The others are aps-c, 23mm 1.4 viltrox, 56mm 1.4 sigma and 17-70mm tamron because my first camera was my a6400. Now I’m wondering what lens to get for a wider focal length that’s full frame, I just don’t have g master $.
I agree with both of you here :) you are 100% correct John, but just like Tj said looking trough already cropped angle of view just gives you sort of different perspective for composition. That would be the only reason for me to use APS-C mode in photos.
@@MagicWeddingPhotographer, I think the key differences between using ff and apsc are as follows: With the A7R4, it’s like having an A6600 in one when is APSC mode. When A7R4 is in APSC mode, the FOV is cropped by 1.5, but the EFL is still 1.0, hence why you don’t lose one stop of light as would with A6600 if you were using a ff lens on each body. Hence the bokeh will be smaller than the 35mm as the EFL is still 1.0 at 24mm (just FOV is at 36mm) meanwhile the 35mm EFL is at 35mm with more compression and more blur and bokeh balls will be bigger being at 35mm zoomed in 3) AF points: With A7R4, you get 74% coverage in ff (567 PDAF and 425 CDAF) but 100% coverage in APSC mode because the FOV is now cropped in by 1.5 Also the 35mm has the new nano AR coding ii, which will reduce ghosting and flare better than the 24mm. Thank you for the great hands on comparison! 35mm at f/1.8 gives you a stronger background defocusing because although the relative aperture size is the same, it's relative to the focal length, and different focal lengths will have different actual aperture size with the same f-number. f stands for focal length.
