I can totally picture this as a feature length-psychological horror film. Imagine it, the lore behind the undertaker, how nobody knows the truth but all have different theories. When did he first start appearing? Or what if he stays for weeks and you see the effects it'll have on different people. Like people start slowly going insane rather than just snapping instantly, they start hallucinating or don't trust each other, they even stop trusting themselves. I'd even like to see more with the reverend and the cripple, and how the reverend maybe starts abusing his position to manipulate people in this time of fear. Good lord the possibilities! I'm probably over thinking it, but that would be so interesting.
I love the meaning. I mean, the undertaker (figuratively) was not a person, but people were afraid of him. People were afraid to die. They'd barricated in their homes for days, without food or water, and that lead them to death. That's the true meaning of the undertaker.
I don't think this short is saying religion is bad. The priest wasn't evil because he was religious, it's because he used his influence, not to give people spiritual help and advice, but instead because he used it to bring fear into the men and women of backwater and and bring hate towards the one man in town that didn't listen to him. I think that the message isn't not to be religious, but rather not to let people who are in charge of religions to have too much power, or else it will get to their heads and they'll start using it for personal gain.
Edmund The Rock pikmin, you're quite right there. You should know this, a man like the Preacher REALLY DID EXIST! He was the Salem Preacher from the Witch Trial Period. He murdered countless women aided by his young daughter & niece (they were just kids at the time) because the Town Councillors were going to throw him out for bad conduct. A Councilman's Elderly Wife was among the murdered women.
Exactly! The town was afraid of death, but if they all stood United and tried to protect each other, there would have been less death, or he might not have even shown up at all. But the Father weaponized their fear likely in a gambit to protect himself by targeting someone vulnerable as a sacrifice. By turning on each other out of fear, they doomed themselves. The Undertaker didn’t even have to do anything to them; their own fear killed them.
Are you guys for real? Your bashing the Bible when you have no idea what he means? In the The sword of the Spirit is scripture and the word of God. Explains it in the Bible.
"COMMIT TO THE LORD!" "Why don't you try it?!" Did he just said that because he knew the minister/preacher didn't really commit to the Lord? If so, that is just... wow.
PH_Brony130, the Preacher was committed to a god alright, not the God he thought he was committed to. Fear the Lord? I'd say to that hateful preacher, 'What Lord is that? The Good Lord who loves without condition or the Lord of Lies who has ownership of YOUR FILTHY MIND, HEART & SOUL?'
This is quite possibly my favorite animation I've ever seen. The art direction, the animation, the music, sound, atmosphere, acting, setting, theme, all executed beautifully and flawlessly. Bravo, this is truly the work of a master!
CeeHoff There are no such thing as "Weren't MEANT to be". You write your own story. Not some fat guy in white robes. If there were such thing as FATE, then our life is not worth living if it is already directed.
No, all of them were bad apples, which becomes obvious by the murderous rage they have to save themselves when they think they might die. But, nobody wanted to admit it(confirmed by the "he without sin... blah blah)", so they hid behind god and chose to believe the priest. The guitarist was the only legit guy there, seeing things for what they where.
+Tasos Kozi The bad priest poisoned (programmed) their minds with fear. Without self questioning they were just like robots waiting orders, because thru irresponsibility they gave psychological authority to the bad priest... Humans become robots the moment we stop questioning.
Aimériel Bé, A man like the Preacher REALLY DID EXIST! He was the Salem Preacher from the Witch Trial Period. The undertaker is a representation of death, The pastor tries to make the people believe that they can cheat death through religion, even though death is an inevitability and shows up in blackwater to prove this, That death does not have a master... And does not arrive too late or too early... But precisely when it means to
that was a well thought out comment, thank you for the reply. although i must have made a mistake in the response since i think this was directed for Zanrich Dryadson who made a comment that sounded like it was from lord of the rings "And does not arrive too late or too early... But precisely when it means to" So i tried to respond in a joking manner by also quoting from the movie that sounded relate-able .None the less great description! 10/10! would buy.
Death involves a change. The ultimate change for any creature on the planet. Unfortunately, humans don't like change. They want consistent and predictable. A stroll through the gateway of death is a path into the unknown that many just can't handle. Religion seems to be a balm of sorts, promising a reward beyond that gate for those who behave in a certain way. It is genuinely depressing when extreme religion clouds rational thinking, reason and logic. Had it not been for the latter three concepts and our ability to utilize them, we'd never have come out of the caves to build cities and civilizations.
aprimeau104 I appreciate your opinion being shared in an assertive tone. Not such that it would be overshadowed nor provocative enough to attract aggressive attention. Thank you.
"Religion is stupid". It doesn't matter if you're the only one who address their talent. Most people are going to comment on the stupidity of Religion, because that is the obvious message being conveyed in this video; made by people "people with talent."
benny honna I'd say the message is more about how religion can be abused. I never thought "oh religion is stupid" when I saw this, I thought, "look at that preacher abusing his power over the townsfolk"
Every time I watch this, I see something new. *SPOILERS* 5:46 The Priest says "I say, the blasphemer shall be stoned!" instead of "the Lord says" which makes me think he isn't really a man of God, he's a man of himself. He follows no one, and even if he did at one time, that time is long gone. He is a symbol of corruption. He defaced the Bible and put a freaking gun in it, and that really doesn't make me feel that the "Priest" cares about or even believes in God, just so long as everyone obeys him. The Tramp did not obey him, and the Priest couldn't stand it, so he killed him. Bubba (the large bald man), to me, represents blind obedience. He goes outside even though he is frightened of the Undertaker. He follows the Priest only so long as he thinks the Priest follows God. After the Tramp is dead, and the Undertaker doesn't move, he realizes the Priest has been controlling them for his own agenda. The Undertaker could be the angel of death, because of how the Tramp says to paint blood on the door, and how you see the Undertaker's black wings flicker on screen. The townspeople, especially the one who says, "well it ain't gonna be me!" represent paranoia and fear of death. They go to the church only because they think it will save themselves (I'm not saying God does or doesn't exist), and they kill the Tramp to save themselves. When chaos breaks out, they try to kill everyone else to make the Undertaker leave. The Tramp, I don't really know what he represents. He could just represent mischievous behavior, or something much deeper. This is possibly my favorite short film I have ever seen. I really hope to see this as a feature length movie. The art style is rather macabre, and perfectly sets the mood for the whole thing. Bravo!
The Tramp could very well represent rebellion. Something happened in his life that made him go against a belief. Now I'm not going for or against any faith, but in a small town in the middle of nowhere, most everyone is generally on the same page when it comes to that, and being the outsider in something so sensitive a topic as religion, tends to get ugly. Note the West Memphis Three. I think the townsfolk represented a form of greed when it comes to religion. Too many people practice a faith for their own gain, and pray for nothing but material wealth and to save their own hides. No one there actually followed the teachings, and only cried out for salvation and guidance because they were scared. As for the Undertaker, I don't think he represented any kind of justice or felt anything toward the situation. Someone was going to die soon, and he was there to do a job. I don't think he felt any more or less toward the situation that an undertaker digging a grave which is soon to be occupied. "The situation will resolve itself. I have no need to interfere." This is the beauty of Death, for Death smiles at beggars as it does kings, as it does to preachers, as it does to politicians... The only thing you can do is smile back.
I think the Tramp is the representation of virtue without the shackles of dogma. He doesn't stress about the protocol or ceremony some practitioners of faiths often uphold. He is more than willing to be himself and see through the fear that blindly clinging to a faith can create. He saw the priest was no true believer in the faith he professed because he was not blindly devoted to the faith. And yet his actions were the most virtuous or "holy" out of all the town. He didn't hide from the undertaker, he likely played for the man for the 7 days, and never once looked at him with fear. If anything, when he first realized he was coming, he understood that the dogmatic congregation would likely be the victims of their own fear and dogmatic belief. While they saw this mythological being who supposedly kills people, he just saw some guy who was doing a job. He was there to collect the dead. That's what undertakers do. They simply come when someone needs to be buried. The undertaker was the embodiment of Death. Death himself never kills. He arrives to collect the already dead. But a blade kills, a bullet kills, a stone kills, a person kills, and a faith can kill. So the Tramp had only the congregation to fear.
I'm reading comments and am kind of surprised that I see discussions about religion, but no flaming, illogical arguments for the sake of contradiction,
The preacher doesnt directly represent religion or God himself; he represents those who oppress in the guise of religion on the gullible. How hard is that to get...
Which is what the the majority of Religious leaders do. He was only following what the Bible tells it's followers to do very clearly. Guide the people like sheep and repress or kill anyone that does not conform. Looks to me like he is representing the two most popular Religions perfectly by inciting a mob against the nonbeliever with the fear of death and eternal damnation. Of course that is only based of the entire history of the Christian and Muslim faiths and the fact that they have been the direct cause of more death, misery and destruction than anything else in the history of mankind. So yeah..... other than those "small things" he in no way represent religion.
'Religious leaders/clergymen' have been twisting and turning information in books like bible for centuries according to their needs, aka misuse of power, violence etc. Quran in the muslims' case couldnt be changed but secondary sources such Hadith literature are full of contradictions and violence-mongering 'teachings' which are used and believed widely among muslims, 'traditions' have been passed down via ancestors and have been challenged by very few. Quran does not encourage violence, people just love to take the description out from the context and misinform everyone including themselves (interestingly, people who challenge the Quran do this very same thing as the blind fanatics who commit terrorism in Islam's name). Furthermore, Quran's linguistic aspect is hardly analyzed and when it is, its done in the wrong way...I could go on but Im not actually here to debate or persuade anyone, there are in fact so many things wrong with our research in religion as a whole for ages..
I am sorry but you are wrong. Both books very clearly support and encourage acts of violence, murder, rape and mutilation against non conformers and severe punishment for anything but strict adherence to doctrine. You can not just blame it on the people who devote themselves to following it's teachings when the teaching themselves are horrible by any standards. They are a product and result of the religion itself and casting blame on them but not the faith that tells them how to follow is just childish. When a person is raised his entire life thinking it is ok to treat people like they are less than him or somehow worthy of discrimination just because they are different it is not just the person that is the problem but also their way of life. I am not in any way taking these things out of context. I have studied Theology for most of my adult life and I understand the Bible and the Qur'an very well. They are both books of hate and control that teach followers to mask themselves in righteousness while committing horrible atrocity against their fellow man and still thinking what they are doing is holy, just and in no way evil. The preacher follows his book to the letter and the result is very much in line with history.
I think the churches possible downfall with society was that the church has become judgemental rather than loving the unbelievers and holding themselves (the church) accountable for what they are doing. Love Jesus, hate religion. Which may be confusing at first but religion is pretty much corrupted for the (leaders) own purposes. Jesus slams down the ways of how the leaders should behave (and it's not popular). Jesus befriends the atheists but he doesn't set the rules for them. Once you start following him though thats when you do what he says because you love him. If you get what I'm trying to say.
its too bad many dont have the common sense to realize that. i think the biggest mistake was viewing God as someone who would punish those that do wrong. since that is obviously not true alot of people choose not to believe. however the proof is there, we were given free will for a reason. like jacob from lost haha
Agreed! But God over and over says that he will punish/destroy those who won't change their ways. As a Christian/Jew that isn't our duty. We are SUPPOSED to love and God also loves as well, but he also executes (for good reasons).
FINALLY SOMEBODY WHO GETS IT!! I was almost fired at work because I told my boss that I won't work on saturday. "Are you Jewish?" "No, I'm a follower of Christ." "Well then what Christian denomination goes to church on saturday?" "None. I don't go to church, because God hates religion. I practice what the Bible tells me to, and it says 'don't work from sunset friday until sunset saturday." "Sounds to me like you're just lazy. It's going to count against you if you don't show up." "Better men have suffered worse for more righteous causes. Consider this my call-off for Saturday, sir. " "You'll be written up on Monday." "Alright. Have a good one, sir." I hope they /will/ fire me for not working today. I will own that freaking company by the time the lawsuit settles.
Section8ification That's stupid. If your boss tells you to work on Saturday, then work on Saturday. It doesn't matter what's written in some book, you need to work when your boss tells you to work. It's different if some one tells you not to celebrate a holiday, or some thing in your home that doesn't effect others. But when your boss tells you to do something, do it.
Ahh, I remember watching this as a kid. I used to think it was about the Undertaker monster-guy, but then I realise- it's the mistrust and violence between people when paranoia takes grip of them. The Undertaker himself does nothing. He just sat there. Everyone else went mad, and decided to collectively blame the crippled man who didn't attend sermons- blaming him, that he had somehow drawn the Undertaker to their town. The priest used fear to control the town, make them blame the crippled man. "Submit to the Lord!" "Why don't you try it?" He called him out. And the fight scene- the priest's Bible is empty, it's a box with a gun inside it. If that ain't a message about using religion as a facade to cover one's own wrongdoings, I don't know what is. Very good animation.
This animated short is one of the very reasons I love the medium of animation, this is the first thing I have since in years to truly test the limits of both style and substance giving us no the world something both beautiful and gritty.
I find it more about the harm that one man misconstruing religion can bring. But everyone has their own opinions. (P.S. the guy above me needs to calm down and realize not everyone has the same opinion. Also I'm an Omnist for the record.)
From the looks of this, it seems the Undertaker himself is not responsible for any of the bloodshed, but his presence causes people to go nuts and end up destroying themselves. If this became feature-length, maybe a twist ending would be a few people who kept their heads and end up surviving, and when they finally confront the Undertaker after the bloodshed is over, they watch him do his job. They ask him why he does what he does. He replies "If I didn't, all of mankind would fall to the plague of fear. This plague of fear must be quarantined at all costs." He starts to walk away with his hands grasped behind his back, and after an awkward silence he says "However, a day will come when I am no longer needed. It will be a great day indeed." He then leaves never to be seen again. What he says in the end is actually a happy note.
Make a good movie. Hell better than most horror movies if done right....hmmm should rephrase that shouldn't I. This movie/whatever it will be if it happens, would be better than 90% of the currently made horror movies. No? Wrong wording again?
So you are saying that the only thing that is capable of destroying the human being is himself. But when the human being loses the fear, which is one of his features, it will stop of dying because of himself. But, to be human, we need to have the fear feature, so you are saying that only when the human evolves we stop killing ourselves. :D Philosophy really works!
Yes but think about this. With how humans are with war in our blood do you think that would happen? I wish to see the day thou When we can evolve from this form into another.
I left the path of religion 15 years ago and I dislike fanatics of all denominatios, but some of you calling yourselves "atheists" here, are no different from those fanatics if you just spread hate and insult believers. Not all religious people are fanatical. Many use religion in a healthy way, and that is not being "brainwashed", as some people here state. CONSCIOUSLY CHOOSING TO BELIEVE in a divine being or beings (if you choose Hinduism, Wicca, etc.) can be beautiful and fulfilling when combined with a rational view of reality. When you are able to ANALYZE your own beliefs and even CHALLENGE THEM TO IMPROVE THEM, because true spirituality has never been a death, frozen set of rules. Actually, many of the greatest scientists have been either deeply spiritual men or atheists who respected believers. Science and true spirituality have never been opposed. But it's so sad to see some people here claiming "they are free from religion", and yet, their absolute view of reality, their aggressiveness and fundamentalism as atheists is just AN ALTERNATIVE EXPRESSION OF DEEPLY FANATICAL RELIGIOUS INDOCTRINATION. They are Inquisitors accusing other Inquisitors. The day you will be truly free of religion, guys, is THE DAY YOU LEARN TO RESPECT AND TOLERATE ALL HEALTHY BELIEFS. The day you learn to respect that some humans are perfectly happy being simple mortals with no God around, and some are perfectly happy being part of a divine plan, and both views are valid and valuable.
Thank you, I'm glad that at least someone has the common descency to treat others with respect and dignity, no matter how crazy or stupid their beliefs are, because were all still people.
***** you've just called all religious people stupid, regardless of their particular point of view. How is that not insulting? Not all religious people are dogmatic, many will have rational views of reality, so maybe it's just that you have met the most fanatical ones. Take a look at Newton's biography, for example. He discovered gravity and he was an amazing mathematician, and yet, he believed in God. And yet, he despised the Inquisition. Does that make him stupid under your definition?
Nephania Black What you have to understand is most of the people commenting have had terrible experiences with religious people, I myself have had pretty bad experiences with them I've told many people that I don't believe in god and more than half of them have told me things in the vein of "you're going to hell" and some of these were by people I considered friends. so while I agree that both sides can be bad I believe religion as a whole can be extremely unhealthy. I personally have nothing against the people who believe it I just believe religion itself is bad as well as the people who profit off it.
I saw this when I was younger, you know the real, "thought that I was a bad ass type" and when I watched this "just as I was browsing youtube" I was scarred for life now I look at myself and my art and I am inspired, And also realised I was inspired by this piece of art to begin with, so I praise you for this dark brooding tale of fiction since i am now shaped by it today...Thank You... Would you person, who of which is reading this like this? Just to spread a pinch of culture to the world? No? ok...
So happy to see you're extending it into a feature length! :D I feel perhaps you should focus on Backwater, starting before its obvious downfall. It could have been a prosperous, white-picket fence society, and the Priest initially is very kind hearted to the townsfolk with the exception the Tramp. That is, until someone dies and the Undertaker shows up. People don't think anything of it, that he's just a passing nomad or something of the like. But then he comes again, and again anytime someone dies. As the town learns to fear him, the Tramp could develop a relationship with the Undertaker, being the only one to eventually talk to him about anything despite the Undertakers constant silence. Eventually, things become so twisted that they end up as they are in this video, a society so scared of death or the promise of it that they blindly follow their faith, hoping it will save them. Eventually, as they did in the end here, they kill each other, leaving no one but the Undertaker. If the Tramp should be given special treatment by the Undertaker because he was the only one who understood that he shouldn't be feared, that's up to you. This is just my two cents and I know whatever you do with The Backwater Gospel, you will always have my support :D
I like this idea. It would be a good way to justify the Tramp being labeled as a "blasphemer" or a "bad apple" because he's perceived to be in league with the Undertaker, and the Undertaker is presumed by the townsfolk to be an agent of Death or even the Devil.
***** Yeah, also one of the most impacting moments for me was when the father revealed to have had a gun concealed in his bible all along, showing that he was just as fearfull and paranoic as everyone else. Maybe he went ahead and invited the undertaker to mass one day, only to be creeped out by something he said/did like saying "This town has so little time" knowing that something bad would happen soonish but not what or when made him go bananas awaiting for the worse, while trying to convince himself that it was a lie, that if he could get everyone on the right path nothing would happen, but maybe should be prepared, just in case and started to wonder if he could get rid of the undertaker altogether...
Bubba has the best lines (The big guy who kills the one legged guy.) 6:41 "OH GOD...NO.. 7:05 or 7:06 "FATHER! YOU HAVE BROUGHT THIS UPON US!" That escalated quickly.
I like how everyone is talking about religion in the comments, yet no one has commented about the fact that the guy who only said "Well, it ain't gonna be me!" was the guy after all? Seriously people, talk about stuff important to the video.
Actually, no one was supposed to die. In the "making of" video, one of the notes stated that the undertaker was sent to the town as a test of their faith. Had they waited one more day, he would have left.
Bianca Guerra Oh crap, I must've missed that, because I did watch the "making of" video. Well, the priest was partially right, then... besides the fact that he made them kill the hobo. This animation sure does have a lot of meaning to it though, which is why I love it.
Awakened Zero I think it's because the tramp was completely innocent in all of this. Even his corpse is laid out in the shape of the cross, possibly to emphasize this.
Loved how vicious and violent it became. Really good animation style and the message unlike many of the comments i've read I took away from this is "Everyone ends up in a box, just varies on size"
Guys, this doesn't mean that religion his horrible. It shows the hypocrisy and selfishness of other people caused by the fear of death and the hope of a higher power or religion. Most people of all kind will turn their backs on the death of another to save their own and this animation is just showing us how corrupt and ruthless a manipulated mind could be. So please, everyone out there, listen to what you think is right, interpret a religion into your own and never follow the acts of another into thinking that they will be either good or evil.
kind of ironic, the one who was saying "well it aint gonna be me" was the first one the undertaker measured. also note the way the father uses the words of the bible as a weapon. also note.... 7:58 looks beautiful....
"Let he, without sin, cast the first stone." Then the guy who had been the pastors/father's right hand in the Church threw a bolder...The undertaker came right on time because he knew they would die, because someone would take the preacher's words for truth and kill out of fear, greed, something. And they did. There was no escaping this circle of mass murder we call life. But I loved this and how when the guitar plater died, his body was I. The shape of a crucifix, like the cross the patron of the Christians, Jesus Christ, had been murdered on. As if these two sacrifices we're one in the same because both were killed out of fear and greed.
UA-cam has done a great thing to me today. I was here when this thing was two years old. Guess a bit too naive at the time to prove that. Found this in my recommended feed. Man, has it been quite sometime. It's still such a goddamn beauty even today. Keeping this to my heart. No matter how gruesome.
Don't think you understood her vocabulary Dude. She was commenting on how she's not a fan of horror, and wasn't expecting the very dark and high tension/high graphic video.
I love how a small little religious hate drives people against each other. Why can't we just enjoy the beautiful art and story? It's a wonderful Gothic piece of work. Now let's stop getting all butt hurt and closed minded about things like this please and thank you. I respect your religious/cultural/personal opinions and your preferred supreme being respects others opinions as well. Please take your negative energy elsewhere.
Erin Whittle But I can enjoy this film and its art while being openminded and negative about other people's beliefs and deepest feelings whithout being disrespectful, just by describing their fallacies and the many flaws of their core values. Why do I have to choose?
I remember watching this back in 2012 and I still never get tired of it, I like to say before sharing this one "Death has many faces" and I believe this is my favorite one.
Haha yeah it makes you think k that religion is bad (I don't believe in anything religious) but yeah I like how the priest ended up getting everyone to turn on their own neighbours backs!
BANG BANG BANG The undertaker's commin!" "who is he coming for?!" "It aint gonna be me!" "MY CHILDREN" omg i love this movie and your chilling Art style!
The fear of death The fear of god The fear of the grim reaper The fear of the different The fear of being "The One" All of this put together makes up for one hell of a bloodbath
Collin Meeks. Cowardice is portrayed heavily in this cartoon by the wicked priest. But ask yourselves this question, 'Who is the biggest of 2 cowards?' The coward or he/she who refuses to admit he/she is one?
This is such an epic animated short, though I can't help but feel sad when I watch it since most people are going to think its anti-religion and completely miss the true morals and meanings that its preaching...
I like how they were wondering what the undertaker wanted, when he really came for the town. And when he sat there at the well just waiting for things to go down, he just watched and I could imagine a grin spreading across his face when the mob started to slaughter one another. The undertaker could've been Satan or just a fallen angel. This was amazing!!
this is the best short Ive seen in quite a while. its shows the dangers organized religion, and how one bad apple (like a corrupt preacher) can spread fear and violence.
Not sure about all the symbolism. I just thought it was sort of a funny, twilight-zone kinda twist. The undertaker comes and takes someone whenever he appears. But at the very beginning, he takes someone. Meaning that if they'd waited a few more days, he would have just left. But since no one saw him take the dead man, they figured that someone was still going to be taken away.
So what have we learned folks? As history shows us, religion can make you do the most unspeakable things. Especially when a believer is gripped by fear, which in essence is primarily the driving force behind Christianity. How appropriate - a belief that advocates divine protection, is fueled by the basic concepts of fear.
Javonne, It's easy to prove your point wrong. If believing in God made people do things like they do in this short film, why don't we see Christians doing this all the time? The Bible says to love your enemy so anyone who murders etc is not acting like a Christian- they're acting like an animal (Which some believe they are).
sinexposed I am a Christian Orthodox. He said "religion" not believing in god. Christians used to do things like that. They burned people just because they though they were witches for example. They act racist against homosexual people (not all of them). And bible also is full of violence and shit. The religion can make you to believe and do bad things. We have stop being such violent as a society not because Bible said love your enemy but because we have science, we live in 2014. And as javone said, Church try to keep Christians by fear and lies.
Padpaw22 No, Jesus said "love your enemy" so anyone who does that is not a Christian even if they claim it. They are doing the exact opposite of folling Jesus.
It doesn't matter how "benign" your religion supposedly is, your willingness to follow it without questioning it is dangerous, regardless of what it is. If you just followed the good teachings, you wouldn't be religious, you'd just be a decent person.
I tried avoiding the comment section but ended up scrolling down a little bit and was disgusted by comments. Just atheists stating their opinion on a video for entertainment trying to make Christians sound like worthless fools with no knowledge and what not. Why can't you give us a break?
Don't listen to those atheists if what they say does not apply to you. I've got atheists friends who let people believe what they believe though it may not be like this from where you come from because from where I come from, people with religion are not fanatical and they don't scream the word of the bible outside.
Jackson Berger You have to understand, Jackson - and don't get me wrong, this video is great and I agree that there's a lot of blathering Atheists here - I myself am agnostic. But a lot of people of your faith give atheists and agonistics reason to assume the worst. I can't possibly tell you how many times people have told me I need to be 'saved' or that i'm going to hell.. The first suggesting openly that their lifestyle is right and mine is wrong, and the second.. well, it's not exactly nice to tell people they're going to hell, is it? It's the same reason you might not like atheists as much after reading the comments. The outspoken minority sets the perception of the entire group, because /most/ Christians, agonistics and atheists live and let be. But you don't hear about them because they don't say anything on the subject.
This short film basically tells of the bad things religion can do to people and how it manipulates others and can be used to control the ones stupid enough to believe it.
I don't think it's just religion. The Preacher scared them into stoning the man, but the people themselves had been saying "Well, it ain't gonna be me" long before they had been scared enough to stone that one man. The bloodshed was brought on by their own fear to die. If anything this video also tells how sometimes our greatest fears of something, and our attempts to evade fate can be the very thing that causes our demise. Its not unlike a movie about a tyrant and a baby child prophesied to kill that tyrant. The tyrant sees that that baby has been born adn tries to kill it. The Baby survives and goes on to kill the Tyrant because the Tyrant continually tries to kill him, and becomes a worse fearful and hated Tyrant as time goes on, and he hurts the one that once-a-baby hero loves. If the tyrant took the baby in and raised him, he could make him the next ruler, and maybe the love he might foster for that child would not only save his life, but change him. This story has been done many times, but never with that alternative. This is the aspect being portrayed in this clip however, that if you fight against your fate or Destiny, you will be the reason that that fate or Destiny becomes inevitable. If we embrace whatever is meant to happen and not run away or work our way out of it, maybe our fate or Destiny can change.
Steven Dorsey ah, but it was the preacher who scared them into the undertaker. to me, the undertaker was really a good person until the town killed the singer. after that the undertaker made them insane and it was all the preachers fault.
***** well you should also pay attention to the church members themselves. look at the way they first walk into the church, almost like mindless zombies. they get scared of everything that is unknown to them and even follow the preacher when he demands to stone someone to death. i think the preacher represented religion, as you may be surprised at how many christian religous forms were made for control people (roman catholic especially).
Rodrigo Arze The problem is that you among so many others like to make yourselves feel better by pretending that Religion makes people corrupt. Wrong. People ARE corrupt. Barbara Tuchman once said, "The amazing thing about human history is how little human nature changes." Human nature, not religion. There was another book written by a man who immigrated into America around the 17th or 18th Century that I can't really quote or whatever because I honestly cannot remember a good enough amount of information to truly do his work justice. However, he came into America a while after the periods of the Old Lights and the New Lights when Americans, during both periods, had become barbaric. I mean, everyone in the Country were people you did not want to meet in a dark alley during the times known collectively as The Great Awakening. Each time, though different because one was a solemn kind of Christianity that was quie that set in, and the next awakening was the fierce fire and brimstone kind that shook America to the core, Revivals were insanely widespread. Overnight each time the entire Nation turned from thieves, vagabonds, rapists, and murderers into good country, church-going people who would gladly help you in a pickle. Between those two periods people had descended back into their old ways and gone back to being some pretty brutal types, both the murderers and criminals, as well as the men who would catch/kill/exact revenge on them. After the period known as The Great Awakening, in or around the 1800s, many immigrants from Ireland, Germany, Russia, and various other countries started immigrating to America because of the freedoms that were promised. Freedoms of Speech, property, religion, political beliefs, and all manner of other things. A man whose name I cannot recall wrote a book because he was astounded by the fact that Religion in America at that time was not what Religion was everywhere else. In all other countries religious people would take over, force all people to convert to that religion or die or face extreme consequences, prevent people from having educations or they would assert total dominance or what-have-you. They might as well have been considered communist regimes adn had a draconian control on all things in that country. That is not what this immigrant found here, and he wrote a book saying what I am now paraphrasing. "[In America]....Religion without Moralitydescends into tyranny, but that is not what I have found here in America...Religion is good because the people are good...." and that is the gist of what he said in his Conclusions. From what I remember about it, it was a fair-sized amout of text on the matter during the 17th or 18th Century. He was astounded by how so many people of different faiths had their own congregations and such, and all the people were good caring people, and how they all coexisted together. They might not associate with one another beyond what was necessary, but they worked and lived in tranquility with one another as Patriotism for the Nation was great amongst the people.
So. The undertaker just sat there. And did nothing. And everyone killed each other. That is what religion does. It destroys lives. By just sitting there and doing nothing.
Why, yes, religions do indeed tend to have a extremely, extremely small number of extremists who do horrible things which completely go against the entire point of the religion they follow. Although, since the same can be said for pretty much any kind of group I'm not sure what your point was. Honestly, you make it sound like religion is the only thing with extremists, and that it causes everyone who is part of the religion to go around ruining lives.
Welp, this was awesome and very horrific. Quite blood and gore filled. I love it :) Films like this are what I thirst for, being a horror junkie. It's beautifully made, well done! The only glitch there is the thing about Christianity (I'm a Christian to the core, don't judge), and how it kinda looks like one of the antagonists here (meaning the priest and how the other guy playing the guitar was so against the religion), but it might just be me. Anyhow, thank you for killing off that priest who hid a gun in his Bible. (Yep this might be contradictory to my previous statement but hey, that priest did all the wrong things in the final moments of the film. And hello, stashing weapons in a Bible, or even cutting it up in any way is practically a sin.) I was just about ready to smash my tablet. Once again, I congratulate you for your amazing work! Keep it up!
I don't think the guitar player was anti-religion per-say, he didn't like how the priest portrayed it as a fear cult, he even mockingly told him to go try to the submit to the lord himself when the priest asked to him go to church and "submit to the lord", so no, his not anti religion he just sees through the priests BS
And the Award for completely missing the point goes to Cezka. The video is trying to discourage fear and hate. The fact that you decided to blame everything on the preacher shows you failed to understand.
brilliant, brilliant piece of animation. not only the artwork, but the lesson of corruption and fear of the unknown, jumping to conclusions and following delusions.
I looked through all the animators' portfolios and showreels, and I'm pretty sure none did (same with Borderlands), but it's just a common art style they all share. This reminds me a lot of the work done for the Gorillaz music videos, but things like Telltale's Walking Dead and Boarderlands use "cel animation." I hope this clears stuff up. :)
Don Bowdry Actually, cel animation has a far older history, with quite a number of Western animations coming before Akira (1988), such as Winsor McCay's Gertie the Dinosaur (1914) and Disney's Snow White (1937). There's a great informational video called "History of Cel Animation" from the UA-cam user TomPreston6 who outlines its past. :)
Those are obviously some very poor Christians. Refusal to love your neighbor, taking the orders of a man over the commandments of The Lord... If you fear God, then you don't need to fear death. It's written that the Lord is our Light and our Salvation, so whom shall we fear? On death, we should be more like The Cripple - death had lost it's sting upon him.
Mariku Junrei I'm not, that preacher is both using the peoples' fear and the Bible as an excuse to commit acts of evil. I do believe the Undertaker could sense that the town was doomed from the get go
sadlobster1 hitler did the same thing but no one is calling out christianity or catholicism "Religion" the bible for what he did? the Preacher/bible was but only a medium for this story to be told its more about human nature and the fears of man then about religion,.they looked to the "preacher as the head/voice of reason. and the preacher used symbolism and prayed on the fears of the villagers because he himself is weak "Don't leave me children" the fear of the Taker just sitting in town as the spirit of death he knows whats going to transpire but the townspeople don't causing insanity and unrest. the preach tries to settle this by sacraficing the only person to challenge him but when that brings no instant result the fear took over and what was left was raw human nature . you are entitled to your opinion and yes within the contexts of your opinion in regards to that aspect i agree with you but in regards to the moot point of the animation i an going to have to respectfully disagree with you in the end the big guy said it best "You brought this upon us Father."
"Submit to the lord!"
"Why don't you try it?!"
Best line from this video imo.
"Well, it ain't gonna be me"
I love that line!
...It's gonna be meh *nsync start playing*
I don't.. 😶
I like the way you think, and I would love to see something like you described! :3
Same here.
The undertaker is the grim reaper of souls.

I love how that's now what I'm known for, like that's what's going to be on my grave :P
I love the meaning. I mean, the undertaker (figuratively) was not a person, but people were afraid of him. People were afraid to die. They'd barricated in their homes for days, without food or water, and that lead them to death. That's the true meaning of the undertaker.
They were fearful of dying, so they did anything they could to not die, which in the end only killed them faster.

I think I’ll make him part of my new story with the hippalectryon someday I’ll make the hippalectryons just as famous as hippogriffs and griffins.

FREAKIN ROASTED
I like the sword sound that was used when he lifted the bible, because it is a weapon
OH YES..!!
Now that is some clever use of symbolism.
Well...that preacher did say "with his sword in my hand".
"Beliefs... they're the bullets of the wicked"
Are you guys for real? Your bashing the Bible when you have no idea what he means?
In the The sword of the Spirit is scripture and the word of God. Explains it in the Bible.
"COMMIT TO THE LORD!"
"Why don't you try it?!"
Did he just said that because he knew the minister/preacher didn't really commit to the Lord? If so, that is just... wow.
PH_Brony130 It's 'Submit' but it still makes sense.
Exactly.
Notice how the singer makes biblical references? He certainly knew his scriptures...
what a fucking legend
PH_Brony130, the Preacher was committed to a god alright, not the God he thought he was committed to. Fear the Lord? I'd say to that hateful preacher, 'What Lord is that? The Good Lord who loves without condition or the Lord of Lies who has ownership of YOUR FILTHY MIND, HEART & SOUL?'
Beautifully done. Very talented!
So is the singer singing about the undertaker i liked it.
This is quite possibly my favorite animation I've ever seen. The art direction, the animation, the music, sound, atmosphere, acting, setting, theme, all executed beautifully and flawlessly. Bravo, this is truly the work of a master!

Great video.
Some people weren't meant to be priests XD
CeeHoff There are no such thing as "Weren't MEANT to be". You write your own story. Not some fat guy in white robes. If there were such thing as FATE, then our life is not worth living if it is already directed.
The priest was that "one bad apple"
No, all of them were bad apples, which becomes obvious by the murderous rage they have to save themselves when they think they might die. But, nobody wanted to admit it(confirmed by the "he without sin... blah blah)", so they hid behind god and chose to believe the priest. The guitarist was the only legit guy there, seeing things for what they where.
+Tasos Kozi
The bad priest poisoned (programmed) their minds with fear.
Without self questioning they were just like robots waiting orders, because thru irresponsibility they gave psychological authority to the bad priest...
Humans become robots the moment we stop questioning.

The undertaker is a representation of death, The pastor tries to make the people believe that they can cheat death through religion, even though death is an inevitability and shows up in blackwater to prove this, That death does not have a master... And does not arrive too late or too early... But precisely when it means to
...so, do we ride out and meet him?
For death and glory perhaps?
that was a well thought out comment, thank you for the reply.
although i must have made a mistake in the response since i think this was directed for Zanrich Dryadson who made a comment that sounded like it was from lord of the rings
"And does not arrive too late or too early... But precisely when it means to"
So i tried to respond in a joking manner by also quoting from the movie that sounded relate-able
.None the less great description!
10/10! would buy.
I was quoting Lord of the Rings because I found it to be the best way to describe how death seem to happen. LankyB
Beautifully said vidyaWolf
Death involves a change. The ultimate change for any creature on the planet. Unfortunately, humans don't like change. They want consistent and predictable. A stroll through the gateway of death is a path into the unknown that many just can't handle. Religion seems to be a balm of sorts, promising a reward beyond that gate for those who behave in a certain way.
It is genuinely depressing when extreme religion clouds rational thinking, reason and logic. Had it not been for the latter three concepts and our ability to utilize them, we'd never have come out of the caves to build cities and civilizations.

Am I the only one who said "Wow, these people got talent and I was entertained" rather than "Religion is stupid"?
Why not both?
You can't deny that the authors wanted to say something about religion with this short.
aprimeau104
I appreciate your opinion being shared in an assertive tone.
*SPOILERS*
5:46 The Priest says "I say, the blasphemer shall be stoned!" instead of "the Lord says" which makes me think he isn't really a man of God, he's a man of himself.
I have no need to interfere."
This is the beauty of Death, for Death smiles at beggars as it does kings, as it does to preachers, as it does to politicians...

Word
This is deep
I would love a tshirt or hoodie with the Undertaker character on it.
"Are you Jewish?"
"No, I'm a follower of Christ."
"Well then what Christian denomination goes to church on saturday?"
"None. I don't go to church, because God hates religion. I practice what the Bible tells me to, and it says 'don't work from sunset friday until sunset saturday."
"Sounds to me like you're just lazy. It's going to count against you if you don't show up."
"Better men have suffered worse for more righteous causes. Consider this my call-off for Saturday, sir. "
"You'll be written up on Monday."
"Alright. Have a good one, sir."
I hope they /will/ fire me for not working today. I will own that freaking company by the time the lawsuit settles.
Section8ification awesome for standing up for your faith!!! I wouldn't lawsuit them as in revenge though, lol.
I'm speechless, that was just... amazing.
Telltale game's sure did get a lot more brutal
This animated short is one of the very reasons I love the medium of animation, this is the first thing I have since in years to truly test the limits of both style and substance giving us no the world something both beautiful and gritty.

One of the best things I've ever seen! In complete awe. Loved this
From the looks of this, it seems the Undertaker himself is not responsible for any of the bloodshed, but his presence causes people to go nuts and end up destroying themselves.
What if, when asked, "why do you do this?" He simply turned around and said, "I don't... They do. You do." turned back, and slowly walked away.
wooooo thats a good one
So you are saying that the only thing that is capable of destroying the human being is himself. But when the human being loses the fear, which is one of his features, it will stop of dying because of himself. But, to be human, we need to have the fear feature, so you are saying that only when the human evolves we stop killing ourselves. :D Philosophy really works!
Yes but think about this. With how humans are with war in our blood do you think that would happen? I wish to see the day thou When we can evolve from this form into another.
A person is smart and cunning, people are stupid, and bloodthirsty.
way to go, Men in Black.
Thank you, I'm glad that at least someone has the common descency to treat others with respect and dignity, no matter how crazy or stupid their beliefs are, because were all still people.
we never insult believers , they insult they're selves with the stupidity they say when they try to prove us wrong.
*****
you've just called all religious people stupid, regardless of their particular point of view.
Nephania Black
there all insane
I feel perhaps you should focus on Backwater, starting before its obvious downfall.
+Jen Kota
Bubba has the best lines (The big guy who kills the one legged guy.)
6:41 "OH GOD...NO..
7:05 or 7:06 "FATHER! YOU HAVE BROUGHT THIS UPON US!"
That escalated quickly.
Here, no one can compete in terms of capturing characters. Best thing I´ve ever seen.
Still my favorite animation to date.
TheSilkyConch still?
@@Z3MBlE still
Let's see it positive: They got matching coffins.
Beautiful animation, nice take on an old but good type of story, and a good infusion of horror. Great work!
Take the 10 mins to watch this. This is seriously the best animation I have ever seen. Brilliant.
I like how everyone is talking about religion in the comments, yet no one has commented about the fact that the guy who only said "Well, it ain't gonna be me!" was the guy after all? Seriously people, talk about stuff important to the video.
No, that they killed an inocent and then it started to rain blood was it after all. ^^
Actually, no one was supposed to die. In the "making of" video, one of the notes stated that the undertaker was sent to the town as a test of their faith. Had they waited one more day, he would have left.
Bianca Guerra
Oh crap, I must've missed that, because I did watch the "making of" video. Well, the priest was partially right, then... besides the fact that he made them kill the hobo. This animation sure does have a lot of meaning to it though, which is why I love it.
Aleksander Werweinov if it rained blood then how come only the areas of the battle were covered in blood?
Awakened Zero
I think it's because the tramp was completely innocent in all of this.
This is still the most aesthetically beautiful short film I have ever seen
this is amazing!! I wish we could see more! you guys did a very nice job animating this.
kind of ironic, the one who was saying "well it aint gonna be me" was the first one the undertaker measured.
also note the way the father uses the words of the bible as a weapon.
also note....
As someone not versed in the art of horror, that was extremely frightening... I'm gonna go play Minecraft now... :I
No, no. I get what it's trying to say.
Don't think you understood her vocabulary Dude. She was commenting on how she's not a fan of horror, and wasn't expecting the very dark and high tension/high graphic video.
***** Yeah, that's it...
Green A hizo un buen uso de esta animación 😎👌
Ophaganestopolis There's no point in arguing of What to believe in.
I remember seeing a video of Wario farting and there was a huge religious debate going on in the comments. It's everywhere.
NintenPLUSH LOL SMH. Thats the main issue man

I remember watching this back in 2012 and I still never get tired of it, I like to say before sharing this one "Death has many faces" and I believe this is my favorite one.

Last scene: Undertaker says. "I just wanted to know where the saloon was."
Fear will destroy you from within

The fear of death
The fear of god
The fear of the grim reaper
The fear of the different
The fear of being "The One"
All of this put together makes up for one hell of a bloodbath
Collin Meeks. Cowardice is portrayed heavily in this cartoon by the wicked priest. But ask yourselves this question, 'Who is the biggest of 2 cowards?' The coward or he/she who refuses to admit he/she is one?

I remember watching this on Facebook for the first time and it instantly became my favorite. I also like the message for it too.
fear makes people do crazy things
and for the Undertaker, hehe...well....thats just business
This is such an epic animated short, though I can't help but feel sad when I watch it since most people are going to think its anti-religion and completely miss the true morals and meanings that its preaching...
This feels like a Picasso painting come to life.
I kinda wanna watch a full length movie of this, or like a TV series based on this.
In the end. There turned out to be only one good apple.
Man... who could stop the Undertaker?
*Brock Lesnar's music hits*
Nobody, because the Undertaker isn't an enemy. He's merely a personification of death, and death is natural.
Burntshmallow You don't get the joke do you?
Omar Moodie Not at first, but I do now.

Omar Moodie, he is on nobody's side & makes no bargains with anyone. He exists only to do his appointed task (a quote from Watership Down).

RIP "GREEN A"
this is the best short Ive seen in quite a while. its shows the dangers organized religion, and how one bad apple (like a corrupt preacher) can spread fear and violence.
I know this video is 4 years old, but is there any chance that this will be adapted to a feature-length film? I quite enjoyed it.
Nevermind, I saw an annotation that said they're working with the director to make a feature-length script.
+George Funk That sounds very cool, I could see that coming!
So what have we learned folks? As history shows us, religion can make you do the most unspeakable things. Especially when a believer is gripped by fear, which in essence is primarily the driving force behind Christianity. How appropriate - a belief that advocates divine protection, is fueled by the basic concepts of fear.
I agree but it has also made people do some of the most beautiful things. It truly is a double edged sword
Wow. This short film had all the right emotions in all the right places.
I'm here for Green A :3
I tried avoiding the comment section but ended up scrolling down a little bit and was disgusted by comments.
I thought this was really interesting even though I am a atheist, this really terrified me. I really love this animation.
Izzy Rees Well this is suppose to terrify you as it shows that christianity, if taught wrong, will have disastrous effects.
Heylo Blah anything, if taught incorrectly, could be disastrous
***** religion made the priest corrupt, so religion is corrupt. the bible is a piece of shit.
I absolutely love the art style, and message portrayed. This is awesome.
So. The undertaker just sat there. And did nothing. And everyone killed each other. That is what religion does. It destroys lives. By just sitting there and doing nothing.
I am saying that religion is doing nothing. Some people who affiliate themselves with religion take it too far. Is that a more accurate statement?
Why, yes, religions do indeed tend to have a extremely, extremely small number of extremists who do horrible things which completely go against the entire point of the religion they follow.
Although, since the same can be said for pretty much any kind of group I'm not sure what your point was. Honestly, you make it sound like religion is the only thing with extremists, and that it causes everyone who is part of the religion to go around ruining lives.
I was not trying to make that impression. And not always is small actually that small... Depends on the size of what you are comparing it to.
And, i guess I really had no point, I was just speaking my mind.
you mixed religion and the people who lead the religion

And such is the folly in fearing death. Very well done Animation Studio's!!!!! One of the best animated short films I've ever seen!
+ChaosmakerTV oh sorry for the shitty grammar, i hate writing on the phone
Cezka the Otaku why would we judge about u being a Christian
And the Award for completely missing the point goes to Cezka.
The video is trying to discourage fear and hate. The fact that you decided to blame everything on the preacher shows you failed to understand.

Looks like it was made by the same artists that had worked on The Walking Dead video game, could be very wrong and its just an artstyle.
edstella I think cel animation was first used for the japanese manga film "Akira" but rarely used nowadays.
I think this should become a full length movie of some sort. Too good to stay on the internet.
they looked like they were made by wood
I thought that too. Really good animation.
Lol, zealot twat.
Thank you. I've been called worse.

I'm not, that preacher is both using the peoples' fear and the Bible as an excuse to commit acts of evil.
I do believe the Undertaker could sense that the town was doomed from the get go
sadlobster1
hitler did the same thing but no one is calling out christianity or catholicism "Religion" the bible for what he did? the Preacher/bible was but only a medium for this story to be told its more about human nature and the fears of man then about religion,.they looked to the "preacher as the head/voice of reason. and the preacher used symbolism and prayed on the fears of the villagers because he himself is weak "Don't leave me children" the fear of the Taker just sitting in town as the spirit of death he knows whats going to transpire but the townspeople don't causing insanity and unrest. the preach tries to settle this by sacraficing the only person to challenge him but when that brings no instant result the fear took over and what was left was raw human nature . you are entitled to your opinion and yes within the contexts of your opinion in regards to that aspect i agree with you but in regards to the moot point of the animation i an going to have to respectfully disagree with you in the end the big guy said it best "You brought this upon us Father."
