@@dgwingnut8052 this is our likely future. No other explanation needed. After every human is dead, and AI runs the war to mechanical completion, nature will start again
I just had a thought. Those guys we see at the beginning are the generals of the millitary, and their minds are hooked up to the machine in order to create tactics without distractions (sleep, food, bathroom, relationships). At some point, part of the machine that was keeping them alive broke down due to the long and neverending war, and they all died because of the neglect/aging to their bodies.
@@marioq70 I just looked it up. That's freaking insane!!! So, an animated short like this can become reality at any moment. Scary. Who knows, maybe all of the powerful countries have that type of system.
I think this would make a great premise for a game. Your character is revived in this derelict base, the only survivor. You have to piece together what happened in the last 20 years while fighting to stay alive, maybe even fighting your own side, trying to shut down the damaged and now insane AI in the base before it launches a doomsday strike against an enemy that no longer exists. Game play would vary depending on whether you try to reason with, bluff, or outright fight your way to the system's core.
Someone beat you to it. It was a manga series called "Chirality", By Satoshi Urushihara. A few more survivors in it, but an implacable global "enemy" who is also trying to end the "war" by ending mankind first... and no, I'm not talking Terminator here, But an enemy that is trying to restore the earth to its primal splendour, by either incorporating, or destroying the plague thats ruining the environment; namely, the plague named humankind.
I’ve been re-watching this short and Fortress more times than I can count for the past 6 years.. I really wish we could have a fleshed out version of what happened leading up to this!! I love the tech and setting as well as the whole somber vibe this gives off. I really wish the creator of this made more of it!!
The theme it gives me is a future where the War went on so long they had to downgrade some tech because they were running out of recourses to make the modern equipment.
An alternate reality, about our days. In the described world, there were only 2 city states that had long been in a state of parity of industrial and military forces. The war had been preparing for decades, and all cultural and scientific progress was subordinated to it. People built bunker cities mostly underground. They made automatic factories of military equipment, created stocks of weapons. Sluggish conflicts with the use of tactical nuclear weapons, and weapons based on new physical principles, have made life outside the cities of states impossible. Due to the increased uranium content in seawater, cities extracted all the necessary energy on the spot. Vertical farms provided a huge population of cities with food. An AI suitable for military purposes has been invented, using the living as part of its computing complex. The “repeater" was invented. The module is embedded in combat complexes and remembers the processes in the pilot's brain, and simulates them. In fact, the pilot's personality (personality matrix). After the death of the pilot, the repeater continues to fight as a pilot for some time, but then begins to rapidly degrade, turning the combat complex into a heavily armed robotic zombie psychopath. If the stronghold is destroyed, some of them unite in detachments and try to fight as much as their mental abilities allow them. If the stronghold has survived, the identities of repeaters are regularly updated, forcing the ghosts of people in cars to realize their death over and over again, gradually going crazy. Combat complexes that have kept in touch with the command posts of cities are subordinate to one of the two surviving AI centers. In 30 minutes since the beginning of the last war, 99% of the population and military forces were destroyed in a meat grinder, the moon was cavitated, which is currently falling to the earth in pieces. But there are still a lot of active combat complexes in the world. Both single soldiers and groups. The living and the dead. Orbital nuclear bombers, automatic cruisers, tanks, bunkers, etc. There are also civilians trying to escape. Locked in the surviving bunkers and leading a “struggle for the survivability” of their homes, which are in fact also military facilities. The AI centers of the parties that survived the war thanks to the most powerful defense system continue the war to the “victorious” end. Victory in their view is the destruction of all opponents by all possible means. As the numerical strength of the sides decreased, the fighting did not become less fierce. With bestial cruelty, AI centers are fighting for every surviving soldier. Dead or alive. Probably, in the location of cities under the control of AI in the coming hours there will not be a single living person, but the main AI degrade very slowly, and continue to perform the task. Life is rapidly leaving this world. p.s. Few animals survived because AI did not destroy them purposefully, like humans. However, there are also heroes in this world. The dead hand project. The newest combat armor with a repeater having 0 percent degradation. (we don't really know if he's dead or not yet). Due to post-death trauma, he has lost his memory and is severely disoriented, but at the moment he is one of the few beings on the planet with free will and the ability to change something. vk.com/deadhandworld - author's group
I always thought of a setting where such a blend of technology could occur. And I pretty much came up with 3 scenarios. 1: Regression due to disaster 2: Certain advances weren't discovered 3: Resource scarcity
@@marrqi7wini54 I’m thinking that this is a alternate reality where ww2 never ended and the US decided to got to war with the USSR. Also computer tech advanced faster in this reality.
this is actually referred to as a Hyperwar which refers to algorithmic or "AI"-controlled warfare with little to no human decision making. imagine 2 sides both have their entire militarys run by AI and all the humans need to do is watch.
I'm 67 years old. My generation watched and worried about the younger generation's addiction to video games. And now, we see them use that technology to produce masterpieces like this! Humans always find a way to use their intelligence creatively. Well done, and thanks. Keep it up.
It was social media, that was the great evil that nobody, even older generations, saw coming. Old multiplayer games were still conducive to making friends (even if they're online, they were real friends). You don't have that anymore in social media, or even in most modern videogames anymore, which is sad.
@@RADIOACTIVEBUNY Real contact with humans is something I intentionally taught my son. Instead of just listening and talking, one needs to look into another person's eyes and see the goodness within, make friends with that. To fall in love with someone, realize the hormones and ideas are just pastimes, and one must fall in love with the goodness that animates someone's eyes. We fall more deeply in love, and become less lonely, when we remember to practice paying attention to the goodness in those we love.
Random UA-cam Watcher perhaps, but perhaps not. Either way, i would say that is 6.5/10 bait. Sure you might catch the average internet user with it, but overall most people will pass it by in search of a more appealing lure

I could imagine a movie or book based on this starting out with this narration: "Mankind has lost. Not against something else, but against itself. No more do men and women live on planet earth, the only signs of them having existed at all being the ruins, the corpses, and the autonomous machines that still carry out battles for a war long over. There are no characters, no heros to look up to or villains to despise, as they are all long dead. Only the machines, carrying out the biddings of their masters that have long since returned to the soil. Come, watch the last march of the machines. See the final failure of mankind finally set itself right and leave the world in silence."
The way things are going; that's how it'll go. It seems our claim to fame is that we learn how to build bigger and better war-tech before we can build the intelligence to use it sensibly. The only counter-example is the 80 odd years we've managed to not nuke ourselves into oblivion; but with the way things are going around the world. . .
SPOILER! . . . . This is the basic plot for Nier: Automata though. The androids are fighting against alien machines for hundreds of years, because it was what the humans built them for. It's only until you encounter an alien android that you find out the entire war is pointless. Both the aliens that the machines serve and the humans the androids are fighting to protect have long since died out centuries ago.
Never thought of this way bro, but if I were that man, I would have been excited to see something man-droven but also scared that it's what led us into this hell
The modern mainstream public is a cancer that grows slowly to consume all soon everything will be devoid of meaning and purpose of any kind that is appreciable
Because it doesn't fit their extremist and totalitarian, tyrannical desires and their need to pus THEIR narrative, even at the cost of human lives, sometimes (ALED BALDWIN!). They just don't care about anything but their power and wealth, about THEIR side of their world, their own opinions. They're absolutely hellbent on forcing everyone into thinking like them, or erasing all other trends of thought - by ensuring nothing produced in media can provoke the mind. Not in terms of hostility, but in terms of critical thinking, analysis and investigatory capacity. The mind isn't challenged, and thus it goes more and more idle, and people rapidly become dumber. Apply this to education, and you get IDIOCRACY. That is where we're headed now. A world increasingly populated by idiots who can't tell right from wrong, good from evil, useful from useless. It's turning into a world of arbitration.
Huh? Plenty of games have writing at this caliber. Primordia off the top of my head. Hyper Light Drifter does it without using any words. It can be easy to miss the writing in FromSoftware games but it's there and it's up to par. The Stanley Parable was written quite well. And while I like the new Fallout games from Bethesda fine, to pick one as an example of good writing I would point to Fallout 2. I've been working my way through The Fall, which has more than a few similarities to this. Homeworld Amnesia the Dark Descent
Reminds me of an old story in Heavy Metal magazine where an alien invasion force attempts to conquer Earth far in the future only to be annihilated by robotic war machines (who were the only survivors of humanity's final war and also evolved themselves over thousands of years). The Earth robots had developed their own human-like culture but were so militarily advanced that Earth is declared unconquerable and quarantined from the rest of the galaxy for all time.
"As the last ships left the bay, the last planes soared the sky, the last troop marched the ground, there was peace. Mechanized machinery toiled, their soft bleeps fading into obscurity. The once magnificent war machines that paraded proudly through streets and cities now march one final time. For even with their creators gone, they shall carry out their will. For the machine never forgets. Upheld humanities wishes, no matter how perilous, how destructive, how naïve. Now they rest, laying along side with their masters who marched with them so long ago. With the final wish completed, last rite upheld, the machine now rests, laying down arms. The naval beasts of the ocean now rest at the bottom of the sea. The flying bringers of death now join their masters on the ground. The mechanized vehicles that roamed the streets roam no more. And now, there is silence, there is peace. And where there is peace, there is hope. Not for the future of man nor machine, for their times have passed, but for those that come after, whenever that may be. Man's mighty accomplishments, tragic end, shall set an example for those who come next."
What really makes me tear up is the lack of information on the pilot. It lifts him or her from the abyss of the forgotten by making you wonder who they were while also having all the conviction that they were like you. young, brave, and hopeful. It's so crushing to know that they died before their War Machine failed. They didn't get to see a world without war.
Watching fortress and then this, it is actually kind of sad to see the flying fortress go down. It has a really surreal feeling to it all. An absolutely great animation.
Battle complex 431 did her best to save the pilot, she simply didn't know, that pilot was dead long ago. Yes, I agree with you, I've even cried when the plane've commenced terminal operations.
And with that last airplane, man died. His story, his destruction of the planet, all his glories, all his tragedies, all his joy, all his greed, all of that ended.
Connor McLernon Well, automatic base's still operating, so, shadow of manking hasn't vanished yet. Also, Dima Fedodtov announced, that there'll be third instance in the "Dead Hand" series - "Intruder", IIRC.
I think this nails why seeing the fortress go down makes me so sad. It's really a two-edged sword isn't it - on one hand the war is over and machines can stop trying to kill each other for little reason, on the other hand things like the fortress were the last remnant of humanity, and once they're gone, humanity has become truly and completely inconsequential.
I found this right now and a really liked it. Has it got a part 2? Or is it the second part? Maybe the third? Or its just a simple 1 episode l9ng animation? It was very very good. 10/10, nice work. :D
"ailens come to invade all humans are dead" finds the planet has been destroyed and they are getting attacked by the machine's that were built by us a very long time ago and somehow is winning.
I don’t think a computer AI could declare a war be over. It would probably recognize it’s lack of personnel and equipment, then send out a request for more, which would never come, so it’d get stuck in a logic loop, sending out calls for help until it finally lost power.
Well given how THIS base was able to send out one more bomber whilst the other side didn't, technically gives them the win in the last war. Get good, scrubs.
Samuel Lynch in wwII there was one situation with the Americans with b25 bombing raid that resulted in a 100%lost rate for the bombers and is known success so losing the aircraft is not considered losing the attack
@WithAStick AngryWhiteMan nope. Some dude use the E=MC² to made a bomb, Einstein became a Watchmen (Reference about the power to change everthing for ever)
@SWAT BOI -YA how do you know robots cant feel anything?! For all we know they could be more advanced than us, have more emotions and have developed feelings throughout their time being alive.
Viveycore Gaming well, the first thing you'd have to think of when it comes to basic intelligence... the first thing you would do in case of system failure is to reboot itself down to its original factory settings. which by the position of the pilot (at the wheel) was in control before the, NOT so retarded AI, had taken over its own destiny. thus #1 objective is to secure the pilot.
what do you totally care about? I didn't say you didn't care. I said artificial intellegencense as you or I.... or just me because you make no fuckin sense.
This is heart-wrenching. At first I wasn't completely sure what was happening, but towards the end it became clear. ;-; I am teary-eyed now. Brilliant short cgi film.
Mans true destiny...To kill. Even in the face of total annihilation, man's thought process was to program AI to continue to wage war. Mutually assured destruction, M.A.D, as true and relevant today as it was during the cold war. Nature is the true winner after we have gone.
Basically humanity destroy itself with war. There are no humans left on the entire planet. Not alive anyway. Nature has taken over. Animals don't have to fear man no longer. There are signs of humanity throughout the planet. Planes, ships, human infrastructures. Vehicles, to toys, electronics, clothing. But due to humans unable to coexist with one another. Humans destroyed their entire existence. Could of been greed, lack of resources, to religion. Doesnt matter anymore. Humans are extinct.
Honestly we would like a sequel or just what happened before the war would be nice to have a sequel or what happened during the war and who are these people this little film would deserve a sequel or a trilogy.
The point of these videos isn't about that. It's about the inevitable end, the destruction of Humanity. While a short about the start might be interesting to see, it would miss the purpose of what's already published.
Kind of like, even in death, he was a part of the war, strapped into the plane, ready for orders to take off and fight, and with his ejection and the fall of the aircraft, the war officially being over, he no longer has to wait on stand-by.
Why is this sad, knowing that this AI still wants one last dying attempt at the war, and seeing that pilot skeleton in the space suit, just hit me right in the feels.
I think the impression of loyalty is created. People like to communicate and think that AI will be the same as us. To feel, to desire, to be afraid, to want something, but it's not so. And he doesn't need it either. He is not afraid, he does not want, he does not feel. He is simply fulfilling his task, and this, in our anthropocentric minds, causes admiration and awe of his devotion. If we think of him as a person, we see before us a person who, realizing the meaninglessness of his work, continues to do it only because he was ordered to do so, and this cannot but admire
At the beginning you can see a group of human remains inside preservation pods connected by some sort of neuron wiring masks and the fact that the status screen refer to them as 'thinking modules', Both are suggested that they were human brains made into organic CPUs for a computer.
0:39 seeing the different helmets, i like to imagine they slowly added exceptional generals to the AI, and as technology advanced, new helmet were invented with each new commander having a more advanced helmet
...And as each successive commander from the differing generations of technology have their life support systems fail on them. It eventually leaves only the last and youngest general to be left alone with his own thoughts who then resorts to inadvertent self-termination (by perhaps intentionally causing his pod to explode) motivated by a combination of existential grief (of the failure of what was the human race, and the loss of their fellow generals who were quite literally the only ones he had left) and mental deterioration. all this accidental (or totally intentional) world-building via environmental storytelling... luv that shit...
I'm gonna say this: We have a lot of mediocre or stupid superheroes movies in halloween costumes, which cost millions and are more or less the same lumps of dirt. This remind me to a story I've read in the school library when i was young ( around early 2000s) Once upon a time, a powerful magical nation from the wizarding world managed to create a portal to earth. They sent a large magic army to conquer the earth which looks like it was in medieval times. They managed to rule over half of the continent before being destroyed by ancient robots and artificial intelligence. Around 3000 years before the story begins, the ancient humans were a very advanced race. They became extinct for unknown reasons, but their robots and Ai's have survived and have continued to renew themselves for thousands of years, while waiting for orders from their long lost masters. Their expedition to ancient ruins that were originally an AI and robotic base has sparked their return to the surface. Ai's regards otherworldly magical powers as unidentified entities and threats that must be destroyed. Missiles from bunkers, giant armored zeppelins with giant cannons, as well as tens of thousands of automatic planes and tanks continued to pound the magic troops to annihilation. Even the Ai managed to engineer portals and launch a counterattack on the wizarding world. Almost all the countries in the other world were destroyed and even the protective spirits called gods were unable to withstand the continuous barrage of nuclear missiles fired. The Ai of the earth finally decided to destroy the other world because they considered it a threat.
Glorious magic army : We are here to conquer this world. Now lower your head and.. what- R2 : Oh look, uninvited guest *PROCEDS TO LAUNCH 100 WMDs IN LESS THAN 3 SECOND*. Holy sorcerer : ah f*ck... 5 minute later R3 : Hey are you done? R2 : Not yet, let's destroy their world to eliminate the threat and save this planet R3 : Ok. How many WMD you need ? Actually a terrifyingly depressing concept. Long after we've killed each other off, the machines on both sides are still waging war against each other.
This is gold. I want to see a series about this. Maybe one where there's a cryostasis center containing some survivors that due to power failure has to reawaken the survivors, much like how Fallout 4 started.
Very nice! It's rare to see 1 person make all these effects alone... Good sense of physics... the water landing looked natural... also the particle effects were well done... especially the dust flowing on the runway and the smoke from the engine
The machines in this video are level of reliability I strive for whenever I design something. I want my design to keep functioning so long that it outlives the species that created it!
Imagine aliens finding Earth after this occurred. A planet absolutely ravaged by war, utilizing weapons that split atoms on the molecular level. Ships that flew themselves years after their builders died. Imagine reading the history of Humans. They fought among themselves literally until the day their species died, only living so long due to their ability to adapt themselves using tools.
H-Bombs to further and use the initial splitting to fuse material creating even bigger blasts, and from the original it looks more like cluster bombs which is exactly what it sounds like and does more even damage than nukes Both are against international law though Posadists think a nuclear preemptive strike against capitalism is necessary though and after abolishing the system in nuclear hellfire survivors would establish a more advanced system (socialism) and thus the aliens who've been ignoring us for being too primitive will see we have finally reached a decent level of societal development and help us in rebuilding and eventually transitioning to communism Posadas was a crazy Trot though so don't try and test that

Having spent some time, the only thing I can really come up with is this... Sometimes (mostly in movies) you will hear leaders proclaim that "we will fight till the last man!" I don't believe this claim has ever been fulfilled (even in movies). This video shows what the fulfillment of that claim would look like. Fighting till the last man - until all available units are expended. To continue fighting despite the lack of enemies or forward progress. To blindly continue in a strategy that does not require tactical appraisal, leadership or even opposition. We will fight until every resource at our disposal has been expended - with or without you.

Irongear Gaming it's not the same Battlecruiser Complex as of what I've noticed. During the first part, when the wessel declared the report it was a name others than the one declared by the computer voice în the second part. I'd say that each part presents 2 different machines that are of same model. However, the 2nd part shows Battle Complex 431 as the only one remaining, probably first one's faith long sealed (2 different names are stated as of what I remember). still, it's memory lives through the 2nd unit of similar appearance until it fades as well. Or it could be the same unit...
In the begening of the second part. we shortly see the pin-up in front of the bomber. it the exact same one on the first part, but older. Also maybe the bomber swapped station after the first one failed? Or those difference are simply the animatot error. seems the different cockpits are simply a new style. But both are awesome anyway :D
There's no indication of what bases, the last bomber was stationed on. First part it indicate the plane number or amount of bombing run it made. Second part tell us what complex it was on: 431.
Reminds me of the Ray Bradbury short; "There will come soft rains". In it there was also an AI house, carrying out all its duties even though all that was left of the family was stencils made from a nuke. Until even it failed. But nature did not.
The beauty of a machine, lost for so long, still following those pre-programmed orders given by masters dead for lifetimes to the best of its ability. I appreciate this aspect of the film as well.
Found a source that Skynet launched the nukes to save humanity since Skynet realised that humanity would die anyways due to disease and over population. So after the nukes was launched Skynet planned to turn the remaining humans into cyborgs
In the quarantine of 2020 I'm reviewing this animation which, in my opinion, is one of the best I've ever seen. In my pov, the most interesting point is the ending, which shows that some animals apparently survived and adapted. Showing that, despite all the atrocities, catastrophes and everything else that humans have committed, nature find a way to thrive. Just beautiful
I definitely love the contrast between the synthetic/man made and nature by the end. Maybe it also shows that despite us humans are extinct and our machines just repeat our last orders, that nature would truly win in the end. Beautifully well done.

The last day of war would be a sad day, assuming it's not amid an extinction. For the circumstances under which no ward whatsoever would be fought are almost always going to be dystopian, bleak, and perhaps far more horrible a fate than any war can ever wreak. War makes us strong, it calls upon the bravest, smartest, most heroic of the human race to fight for their ideals, regardless of whos side they are on. In order to approach the endless frontier beyond earth, perfection and a practiced hand in war is necessary and vital to human supremacy.

Doubt it. With a few more years of genetic engineering research we could *make* more animals, different species, etc. There are no aliens. No other life forms out there. If we want cool space-deer or aliens in the future, we will have to make them ourselves.
existence without intelligence is pointless. As pointless as these bombers bombing a already dead city. The universe is just a machine running on automatic with no purpose without intelligence.

"Mankind has lost.

This is absolutely spellbinding. It saddens me that storytelling of this caliber is utterly lacking from modern mainstream film and gaming.

It's really a two-edged sword isn't it - on one hand the war is over and machines can stop trying to kill each other for little reason, on the other hand things like the fortress were the last remnant of humanity, and once they're gone, humanity has become truly and completely inconsequential.

that is not a space suit.

I don't know how many times I saw this video. To me it's a classic. That's right this short video is a classic. I hope the people who made this video have a part:2 , a part:3. This is a great video. The computers keep on going. The computers are still programmed to continue (to fight) the war. I just hope there will be a follow up to this great video.
I would say this qualifies as horror, but it's really not. The emotion is closer to that of dread, where I know it'll happen one day, but can't do anything to stop it.
This is a really good animation, man.
I think about this quite a bit as well, not so much this specific scenario, but that one day there will be the last human alive. One day our inventions and minds will fall silent, and the galaxy will be silent upon our death.

Funny how the plane tries to rescue the only thing it never really needed: The Pilot
The AIs seem to be fairly limited: In the first film, the fighter that attacked it drove straight into its defensive fire without input from the pilot, in this one, the plane can't do more than crash on what seems to be half-power and plenty altitude.
If you look at the monitor than you might see that it asks for instructions from the pilot in the first and second film.
Exactly, the ai is limited which probably is a good Thing because they would soon become way samrter than the actual Pilot which would have been a bad Thing.
SKYNET !
It at least makes a decent attempt of controlling the descent.
I would love to see a prequel to this. I want to see how the war was fought, the last moment of the last human, that sort of thing.

he died later by starvation in is plane bevore he had a chance returning to bace (where everyone alrady died to give him the chance to do this final citical mission)

Actually a terrifyingly depressing concept. Long after we've killed each other off, the machines on both sides are still waging war against each other.

H-Bombs to further and use the initial splitting to fuse material creating even bigger blasts, and from the original it looks more like cluster bombs which is exactly what it sounds like and does more even damage than nukes
Both are against international law though
Posadists think a nuclear preemptive strike against capitalism is necessary though and after abolishing the system in nuclear hellfire survivors would establish a more advanced system (socialism) and thus the aliens who've been ignoring us for being too primitive will see we have finally reached a decent level of societal development and help us in rebuilding and eventually transitioning to communism
Posadas was a crazy Trot though so don't try and test that
And thus the gears of war start once more through other species
What happen if they found human weapon?
Not aliens. Peoples only

But of course

I appreciate this aspect of the film as well.
basically what happens to SKYNET when it realizes its killed all the humans. end program.
Found a source that Skynet launched the nukes to save humanity since Skynet realised that humanity would die anyways due to disease and over population. So after the nukes was launched Skynet planned to turn the remaining humans into cyborgs
It then had to wage war against its fellow program and rival The Turk which would not stop until it exacted revenge for the death of human kind.
