  • The 2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE is part of the 1.6% of cars sold with a manual transmission this year. If you can find one, you're part of an exclusive group of passionate enthusiasts who prefer to row their own.
    In this full review we look at how easy it is to drive, interior cargo capacity, engine, handling, ride comfort, infotainment and if the manual is worth considering over the CVT transmission.
    This 2021 Corolla hatchback in the XSE trim with manual transmission came out to $25,285 including options and destination fee.

    I bought a 2020 hatchback this year. In fact, I bought it without even knowing how to drive a manual. Taught myself to drive stick by watching UA-cam instructional videos, and then going out and practicing on the car. Can confirm, this car is super easy for beginners. The iMT was already mentioned in this video, which makes downshifting a breeze. But a couple additional things worth noting are the brake hold feature and the electronic parking brake. These take the fear out of rolling backwards. Brake hold is great for smaller inclines. You use the electronic parking brake on steeper hills. Either one of these automatically release once you start moving forward. So, if you're learning to drive the Corolla hatchback, all you need to worry about is the learning how to use the clutch, and which gear to be in. You don't need to worry about rev matching or hill starts.

      40 years ago, the very first car I bought myself was a manual and I also taught myself. Watched others drive them and it just looked like fun. Been driving manuals ever since. Good for you taking the plunge. Too bad they're phasing out manuals just when you're starting, but you can always look for used in the future. And hopefully the Toyota will last you a long time.

    • @hamsterama
      @hamsterama 2 роки тому +3

      @@MrTrashcan1 Yes, it's really too bad there are fewer and fewer manuals available! No matter the manufacturer, the choices are extremely limited. For example, Toyota only has two models with a manual available, the Corolla and the Tacoma. Well, I suppose there's the 86, but I view that more as a Subaru with a Toyota badge. If the Camry were available in a manual, I would have gotten that. I'm 36 years old, so I'm proof that it's never too late to learn to drive a manual. I really hope manuals never disappear entirely! They're really so much fun, I'm glad I took a risk by buying a car I had no clue how to drive.

      @@wheresjerz8021 Congratulations on your new car! I got my Corolla in March 2020, and I still love it as much as the day I bought it! You don't need to worry about the car rolling backwards. I've done a ton of hill starts, without ever learning how to do a "real" hill start. In most cases, brake hold is all you need. You only need to do parking brake starts if it's extremely angle, such as a parking garage, or if you live in the mountains. I live in very flat Ohio. The only time I encounter hills is at highway exits. And brake hold is all I've needed to use, I've never have to do a parking brake start.

      And they're mechanically simple, reliable and durable. And a clutch (diy labor) is dirt cheap - I've never replaced one before 200k mi. Even if you paid for the labor it's still way cheaper than replacing an AT. And yes, I'm always looking for something else to do when driving an AT - it just feels boring.
      I could care less what others choose or why, I just don't like my preferred transmission taken away. Being a Toyota die-hard, I'm relieved they've stuck with the MT.

    Yes, save the manuals indeed. I just purchased a 2021 Corolla XSE, 6 speed manual in silver metallic w/a black metallic roof. It looks very cool. Mini Cooperesque. More than adequate power and fabulous milage, on 87 octane. I hope it is more than 2 percent, however. Traded a “hotrod” for the Corolla. A 2012. VW Jetta SportWagen TDI w/a 6 speed TDI double clutch transmission and 80k miles on the odometer. It was an awesome car. But it was starting to cost me. It is German. Not comparable cars for sure, but I am very happy with my decision.

    That D4S is what all turbo engines should be running. Until 2 years ago, I was an Audi/VW tech (20 years). We had to do carbon cleanings on the TSI and FSI engines all the time. Good money for the shop, but annoying for the customer. That's why I never bought a Audi/VW of those generations. They also have the timing chain tensioner failures and loss of camshafts due to poor lubrication (cam bridge failures) and HPFP cam followers.
    My friends would ask me "I'm looking at an Audi, what should I get?" I'd respond with "get a Toyota".

    2 percent is small but the new car market is so large in the US that it still works out to be a large number of manual cars sold; approx 340k to 350k cars based on 2019 sales totals. And I have no doubt if more cars were available with a manual or if they were on the lot at the time, they would probably opt for it. But a lot of times ppl just settle for what's on the lot. I would like to see more pickups and (since SUVs are super popular now) these new wave of subcompact and compact Crossover/SUVs be available with a manual. Unfortunately, for me, I have to buy Auto. :'( I live in Australia, therefore we drive on the left. The clutch is on the left and I have started developing Osteoarthritis in my left hip. It won't be long before I will be unable to use the clutch at all. Therefore it's better for my hip that I get an Auto. If it were my right hip, I'd definitely buy a Manual. All my past cars have been Manual.

The High performance K20A engines max torque is at 6100 to 7000RPM, that is a screamer specialty version for Type R cars only, not a standard engine. If you want to compare that type of engine to the Corolla, you need to compare the same purposed engine, and to today's GR Corolla which is a 1.6 220kW engine.
      "Litre" is not your word, it's a French word which other English speaking countries respect in their adoption of the French created international Metric System of measurement, and I'm curious as to why are you not using cubic inches, that's your unit of engine volume, isn't it!
